Liu, Tianhan. "Modal concord in Mandarin." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/54769.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyze modal concord in Mandarin Chinese. Modal concord is a semantic phenomenon in which multiple modal words in a sentence are interpreted semantically as if there was only a single modal expression. The thesis provides a description of the Mandarin modal system (especially the necessity modals), following the formal analysis of Kratzer (1991) and von Fintel & Iatridou (2008). The generalization is established that a concord reading is available only when the modals agree in their modal type, ordering sources and quantificational force. This generalization cannot be accounted for by the current modal concord analyses: the modal logic approach and the type-shifting analysis from Huitink (2008). Inspired by global theories of negative concord such as de Swart & Sag (2002), a fusion analysis is proposed to account for modal concord, which treats the multiple modals in a concord reading as equal to each other in the sense that their combination is semantically equivalent to each modal alone, leading to a single modality interpretation.

Abstract In this dissertation, we develop and defend a universal theory of concord (i.e. feature sharing between a head noun and the modifying adjectives). When adjectives in a language show concord with the noun they modify, concord morphology usually involves the full set of features of that noun (e.g. gender, number and case). However, there are also languages in which concord targets only a subset of morphosyntactic features of the head noun. We first observe that feature combinations that enter into concord in such languages are not random. We then show that this observation can be explained with a theory of concord that has the following properties: (i) concord is obligatory whenever phasal domains are inactive (the obligatoriness claim) and (ii) languages that lack concord have a phasal Noun Phrase (the phase claim). We provide evidence supporting these claims. The obligatoriness claim leads to two predications: (1) idiosyncratic gender languages are gender concord languages and (2) languages with pluralia tantum nouns are plural concord languages. We show that these predictions are empirically supported. The phase claim implies that a language lacks overt manifestation of concord only if it has a phasal NP. We show that, due to the phasal status of NP, non-concord languages exhibit the following properties: (1) AP movement out of NP is not possible, (2) the Num head need not be obligatory in the extended projection of a noun (leading to number neutrality) and (3) nominal inflectional elements can be shared between coordinated nouns. We provide evidence supporting these claims.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy, 2013.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.

This thesis focuses on concord structures found in Western Armenian. I label a structure as concord if two morphemes found in the same clause bear the same feature, yet only result in one semantic interpretation of that feature. The main focus of the thesis is that of negative concord in Western Armenian. Other concord phenomena are also examined: complementizer and additive concord. I draw a parallel between all of these structures, demonstrating that they can be analyzed using the same system of Agreement of the relevant features. A striking similarity between all these concord structures is the optionality of the morphemes involved. Negative morphemes, complementizer heads, and additive markers are optional in Western Armenian. These concord structures bring about some issues regarding head directionality. Western Armenian is a generally head-final language. Certain domains exhibit both head-initial and head-final possible structures. These are found in the complementizers and the adpositions of the language. The complementizer phrases (CPs) which contain more than one morpheme bearing the same feature, are comprised of one head final and one head initial morpheme. Either can be uttered without the other being realized, and both are possible in the same clause as well. Variation, in this case with regards to head direction, is usually studied across multiple languages or across phrase types within a single language; however, WA is a language where variation is seen within the same type of phrase. Western Armenian gives us insights into systems that usually only show one setting in any given language. In analyzing these novel patterns of variability I argue that unique stress and prosodic properties help me unlock these puzzles.

Hallengren, Anders. "The code of Concord : Emerson's search for universal laws."

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to detect a pattern: the concordance of Ethics and Aesthetics, Poetics and Politics in the most influential American thinker of the nineteenth century. It is an attempt to trace a basic concept of the Emersonian transcendentalist doctrine, its development, its philosophical meaning and practical implications. Emerson’s thought is analyzed genetically in search of the generating paradigm, or the set of axioms from which his aesthetic ideas as well as his political reasoning are derived. Such a basic structure, or point of convergence, is sought in the emergence of Emerson’s idea of universal laws that repeat themselves on all levels of reality. A general introduction is given in Part One, where the crisis in Emerson’s life is seen as representing and foreshadowing the deeper existential crisis of modern man. In Part 2 we follow the increasingly skeptical theologian’s turn to science, where he tries to secure a safe secular foundation for ethical good and right and to solve the problem of evil. Part 3 shows how Emerson’s conception of the laws of nature and ethics is applied in his political philosophy. In Part 4, Emerson’s ideas of the arts are seen as corresponding to his views of nature, morality, and individuality. Finally, in Part 5, the ancient and classical nature of Concord philosophy is brought into focus. The book concludes with a short summary.

Piñar, Larrubia Pilar. "Negative polarity licensing and negative concord in the Romance languages." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187478.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to contribute to the investigation of the semantics and syntax of Negative Words (N-words) in negative concord languages, with a focus on Spanish. An in-depth look into the syntactic behavior as well as into the meaning of terms such as nadie 'nobody', nada 'nothing', nunca 'never', etc., will provide some insight into the controversial nature of these words in the Romance languages as well as a better understanding of their peculiar pattern of distribution. On a larger picture, a thorough investigation of the semantics and syntax of these items will, in turn, contribute to a better understanding of the nature of negative polarity items in general. Thus, as I just anticipated, my conclusion is that N-words are in fact equivalent to negative polarity items, and that the phenomenon of negative concord, by which, in some languages, various negative items contribute only one semantic negation to a sentence, is a subcase of the crosslinguistic phenomenon of negative polarity licensing. In this respect, my analysis of N-words builds on the analyses of Bosque (1980) and Laka (1990). I base my conclusion that N-words are negative polarity items upon an extensive survey of comparative data coming from different Romance languages as well as from English, and I bring up new data and arguments supporting my view on the issue. In addition to arguing for the negative polarity nature of N-words, I also explore the extent to which syntactic operations are involved in the licensing of N-words, and I provide evidence showing that N-word licensing does not directly involve syntactic movement (contra most standard assumptions). Finally, in my investigation of the nature of N-words, I go beyond simply identifying them as negative polarity items. Specifically, I look deeply into the logicosemantic contribution of N-words, and I present arguments and data showing that N-words do not have either negative or any other kind of quantificational force. Rather, as I argue, they are better characterized as logicosemantic variables (in the sense of Kamp 1981 and Heim 1982.) In this regard, I depart from Bosque's (1980) and Laka's (1990) characterization of N-words. My view is more radical than theirs in that I do not just claim that N-words do not have inherent negative content, but also that they do not have any quantificational force of their own at all.

Chau, Mai-Mai. "The planning and negotiation process : its contribution to Concord Pacific Place." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2281.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the planning and negotiation process engaged in the conceptualization and initial stages of Vancouver's waterfront urban renewal project Concord Pacific Place at the False Creek North waterfront, Vancouver. Numerous articles have devoted attention to the physical form of this urban renewal development. However current discourse on Concord Pacific Place overlooks the planning and negotiation process, which has been integral to its urban renewal success. It is for this reason that my thesis sets out to study the planning and negotiation process in an effort to offer a new perspective on Concord Pacific. To contextualize the development of Concord Pacific Place over the two decades between 1987 and 2007, this thesis surveys the introduction of high-rises in the city of Vancouver, looking at the city's apartment typology prior to the redevelopment of False Creek North, a brief history of Expo 86 and the planning and negotiation process behind B.C. Place, as well as the planning and negotiation process that has transformed the former Expo land into the master-planned urban neighbourhood at Concord Pacific Place. This thesis also identifies the results of the planning and negotiation process that have contributed to the False Creek North development. The material gathered includes a collection of historical and background information on the transformation of the City of Vancouver in general and in particular the False Creek North site found in published accounts, consultation of the archives of Concord Pacific, and interviews with key players involved with the development of Concord Pacific Place. City planning officials were also consulted on issues pertaining to the basic planning principles of the City of Vancouver as well as the decision-making process involving City planners and developers. This research highlights the importance of the relationship between the City planners and the developer as well as participation from the public throughout the planning and development stages of the Concord Pacific Place development. It points out specific initiatives that were established as a result of this megaproject, the main challenges and limitation encountered with the process. It also identifies lessons learned at the end of the journey.

Begg, Rachel. "Banning Bottled Water in Concord, MA: How an Apolitical Commodity Became Political." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30700.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis paper explores how various actors gathered around bottled water when a ban was put into place in Concord, Massachusetts. The objective has been to answer the following questions: How does an apolitical commodity become a political one? Specifically, how does bottled water move from being an apolitical commodity to become a highly political one? What does this mean for environmental politics? I situate my theoretical approach within Martha Kaplan’s research with fountains and coolers. I use Bruno Latour to show in which ways this ban became a matter of concern, as well as how the ban and the plastic bottle are actors. I conducted fieldwork in Concord and I interviewed participants. My findings reveal that the ban brought meanings to the surface and challenged them or supported them in various ways. The discussions turned from the impact of bottled water on our environment to the political impact of bottled water companies and large corporations on local Concord issues.

Full text
Abstract:
Background This thesis explores the relationship between individuals’ subjective experiences and the welfare state setting. The research questions in focus deal with the outcomes of women’s and men’s increasing dual roles in work and family in contemporary welfare states. The studies analyse women’s and men’s subjective experiences of combining work and family, and their perceptions of fairness in the division of household work. Methods The thesis applies a comparative perspective where the unit of analysis is country and/or family policy model. A broad perspective with the aim to capture general patterns across a broad range of welfare states is combined with a narrower case-oriented approach. Multilevel analysis is used to analyse patterns at national as well as individual levels in the same model. Latent Class Analysis is used to capture patterns of latent dimensions with regard to the central concept of subject experiences. Results The results indicate that the introduction of policies aiming to promote dual roles among women and men and the articulation of gender equality can matter for individuals’ subjective experiences of work-family conflict. In dual-earner countries, the probability that a high level of conflict is counterbalanced by feelings of life satisfaction is higher than in other policy models. A class asymmetry is found when it comes to effects of policy on men’s and women’s levels of work-family conflict and work-family satisfaction; women in the working class and the salaried class are more similar when it comes to experiences of work-family conflict and satisfaction in Sweden than in Germany and the UK. The analysis also shows that perceptions of fairness in the division of housework are moderated by the institutional and normative context. The politicisation of gender equality increases the correspondence between actual share of housework performed and the perceptions of fairness in the division of housework. The effect of politicisation is more important for men’s perceptions than for women’s. Conclusion The thesis contributes to a deepened understanding of the relationship between policy and work-family conflict and the integration of the perspectives of role conflict and role expansion; knowledge about the ways in which both class and gender relations are structured concerning the patterns of work-family conflict and satisfaction in different policy contexts; and new knowledge about the relationship between policy and men’s – and not only women’s – perceptions of fairness in the division of household work.

Full text
Abstract:
The theme of governance and development for harmony in the Republic of Benin (1960-2010) allows us to understand that failures to the union or unit in Benin are already sprains to the unification. The Beninese has never managed to be sincere towards each other. The games of betrayal that existed between them since the days when the horrors of royal wars marked negatively all the warring parties have survived to modern times. And is the lack of mutual forgiveness for a sincere reconciliation which causes the tripped governance concerted and consistent in our country. This is a source of political and social instability. She developed behaviors that are tribal and ethnic mutate into excessive individualism among citizens albeit are the types of political regimes that we have achieved. However, no economy can prosper if it is against the true sense of fairness. This causes the underdevelopment of the Republic of Benin. The classical theories of economics ("growth first, then redistribution" of Lewis) fail. These so-Called extremists ("Redistribution first, then growth") fail as well as those covered by the models reformist ("distribution and redistribution or satisfaction of basic human needs ").We must therefore describe the prospects for improving the quality of human resources, economics, form of governance ... for harmony for the presidential term 2011-2016 and possible consequences of governance in the Republic of Benin

Introduction: Ultrasonography (US) has a recent use in Rheumatology, and the reliability of the method in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients has yet to be clarified. Objective: To test, in a RA survey, the reproducibility of musculoskeletal US performed by Rheumatologists with one-year training through re- analysis by a Rheumatologist expert in the method. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study included consecutive RA patients from our tertiary center. US exam was performed in metacarpophalangeal joints, proximal interphalangeal joints, and wrists. Presence of synovitis, power Doppler (PD) signal, bone erosions, and cartilage changes comprised the US parameters evaluated. A kappa value in-between 0.20 and 0.40 was considered fair; in-between 0.41 and 0.60 was moderate; in-between 0.61 and 0.80 was good; and above 0.81 was excellent. Results: We analyzed 1380 joints of 60 RA patients (78% females, 78% caucasoids). Mean age was 58?11.56 years, mean disease duration was 9.98?7.79 years, mean DAS28 was 3.82?1.53, and mean HAQ was 0.91?0.67. Kappa agreement for synovitis ranged from 0.30 to 0.70; for PD signal, from 0.53 to absolute agreement; for erosions, from 0.70 to 0.97; for cartilage changes, from 0.28 to 0.63. Conclusion: While good, moderate and excellent interobserver agreement were obtained for erosions and PD, concordance for synovitis and cartilage changes were less impressive in our patients with active RA. Further studies on standardization of scanning technique is necessary to improve musculoskeletal US reproducibility

The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenology, production, fruit quality and the juice of six clones of the ‘Concord’ grapevine on three rootstocks, as well as the concentrations of total polyphenols, anthocyanins, tannins, antioxidant capacity and color of grape juices obtained from this clones. The ‘Concord’ clones ‘22’, ‘28’, ‘49’, ‘202’, ‘211’ and ‘225’, obtained by Embrapa Grape and Wine, grafted on ‘420-A’, ‘IAC 766’ and ‘IAC 572’ were evaluated. The trial was carried out in a experimental vineyard located at Technology Center of COROL Cooperative, Rolândia, PR. The experiment was arranged in a factorial system (six clones x three rootstocks) in a completely randomized design with five replications. The grapevines were trained in a overhead trellis system spaced at 4.0 x 2.0 m, and the evaluations were performed during the harvest of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. The juice samples were obtained by the Welch process. It was verified that ‘202’ is the earliest ‘Concord’ clone, by showing the lowest cycle duration from pruning to harvest. Among the rootstocks, the ‘420-A’ induces the highest daily rate accumulation of soluble solids, reducing the total cycle and the thermal demand, while the ‘IAC 572’ induces the lowest rate, increasing the cycle and the thermal demand of the clones. Two combinations standed out of the others treatments. The clone ‘22’ on ‘IAC 766’ presented higher means of production, yield, number of clusters per plant and lower acidity. The clone ‘211’ on ‘IAC 572’ presented higher means for number of clusters per plant, soluble solids, highest soluble solids/acidity ratio and lower acidity. The juice of clone ‘202’ presented the highest menas of total polyphenols and tannins, color intensity and yellow and red color at 420 and 520 nm. The juices did not differ as the oxi-redoxf capacity, anthocyanins and the violet color at 620 nm, however the use of the rootstock ‘420-A’ resulted in higher means of total polyphenols, tannins and oxi-redoxf capacity, while the ‘IAC 572’ provided a reduction in the intensity of color of the juices. A significant positive correlation between the oxi-redoxf capacity and total polyphenols, as well as oxi-redoxf capacity and tannins of the juices was verified. The differences between the clones of the ‘Concord’ grapevine, coupled with the influence of rootstocks provide combinations that can serve different purposes of growth.

This paper aims to present a pedagogical intervention proposal for the study of variable rule verbal agreement of the 1st person plural in the 6th grade of Elementary School, based on the diagnosis done in 2014, in a public school of Duque de Caxias. Three aspects were taken into consideration in the composition of this diagnosis: (1) a study based on the Labovian Variationist Sociolinguistic (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 1968) concerning the verbal agreement of the 1st person plural produced by 6th graders, (2) a survey carried out through a questionnaire of the beliefs and attitudes of Portuguese teachers of the school as to the use and study of this linguistic phenomenon and (3) an analysis of the pedagogical approach proposed by the coursebook chosen by the school. The results of the sociolinguistic study showed a considerable variation of the 1st person plural agreement in the student?s speaking and writing. The answers to the beliefs and attitudes test indicated that the pedagogical action around this variable phenomenon has concentrated on correction and reading practices. The analyzed coursebook does not consider the verbal agreement phenomenon explicitly, but presents an extensive grammatical study of verbs from which it can be concluded that it is up to the school teaching the explicit realization of bending 1st person plural. In developing the proposal itself, the theoretical methodological foundation was based on association between the Model of Continuous (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004), with an emphasis on the continuous stylistic monitoring and didactic-pedagogic approach of the collaborative apprenticeship (BEHRENS, 2013).

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how Swedes writing in English construct number concord with collective nouns. This was done by studying three primary corpora: the Swedish English Newspaper Corpus (SWENC) and the press sections of Frown (American English) and F-LOB (British English). The findings were compared with the results in the Blogs in English by Swedes Corpus (BESC), Frown (American English) and F-LOB (British English). The SWENC contains texts from three online newspapers and one corporate newsletter in English, all of which are written by Swedes. The BESC contains texts from Swedes blogging in English. Frown and F-LOB contain texts from fifteen text genres in the 1990s. The results in the SWENC are discussed and compared with the press sections of F-LOB and Frown. The results are also compared with the BESC, Frown and F-LOB in order to see whether there is regional and stylistic variation. The results show that Swedes prefer singular verbal concord with collective nouns even though plural forms occur which seem to be closer to F-LOB Press (BrE) than Frown Press (AmE). In contrast, the SWENC differs from the press sections of Frown and F-LOB in constructing pronominal number. This difference could be influenced by Swedish usage which allows both singular and plural pronominal number with collective nouns. The study also shows that plural forms of political parties that seem to constitute collective units show variation in Sweden whereas such nouns take only plural concord in both American and British English.

Abstract:
Septoria ampelina causes a disease of grapes known as septoria leaf spot. This study was done to determined which of the fungicides currently used to control the various diseases of grapes, plus one experimental fungicide, is the most effective in controlling septoria leaf spot. Both in vitro and in vivo methods were used. In vivo studies examined the systemic and/or protectant activities of the fungicides. The systemic and protectant fungicides included Bayleton, Benlate, Elite (an experimental fungicide), Nova, Rovral and Rubigan. The protectant only fungicides included Captan, Dithane and Kocide. In vitro tests to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for each fungicide (e.g., the concentration of the fungicide that prevents the fungus from forming colonies on the PEA-fungicide medium), indicate that Benlate (MIC = 0.1 ppm) and Elite (MIC = 1.0 ppm) have the greatest potential'to control septoria leaf spot of grape. These are followed by Dithane, Nova and Rubigan (MIC = 2.0), which in turn are followed by Bayleton and Captan (MIC = 50.0 ppm). Kocide and Rovral did not inhibit fungal growth at concentrations up through 100 ppm. Although all the fungicides tested significantly reduced the incidence of septoria leaf spot in vivo, Benlate and Elite were the most effective fungicides (both in systemic and protectant application).

Abstract:
The Concord Sonata by Charles Edward lves (1874-1954) concerns the musical representation of the writers R.W. Emerson, N. Hawthorne, Bronson and Louisa May Alcott, and H. Thoreau, who lived and worked in Concord, Massachusetts, during 1840- 1860. The composer has set out a detailed programme for the sonata in his Essays before a sonata to inform the interpreter as to what his impression of these writers entails. This programme also presents philosophical ideas to be realized musically and two questions are subsequently raised: *How can the Essays assist the pianist to gain a better understanding of the programme? *What musical devices in the score can be associated with the programmatic ideas in the Essays? The aim of this study is to determine how the Essays before a sonata can enhance the performer's insight regarding the interpretation of the Concord Sonata. Ives' aesthetical ideas are linked with both the programme of the composition and the techniques used to realise it. The hypothesis holds that lves has mediated in his Essays before a sonata between an artistic and analytical approach to the Concord Sonata, especially where the abstract ideas of the programme are concerned. A model was developed to investigate lves' unique realization of the sonata form. In the course of the work he combined a cumulative structure and a crystallizing technique to issue in the most important theme. The "human-faith-melody" emerges fully in the third movement and becomes the transcendental tune in the last, played by a flute. Other musical devices incorporated in the model include lves' use of quotation, fragmentation, polistylistic writing, and the cyclic principle. His collage technique demonstrates the characteristics of the transcendental writers (i.e. quotation, reiteration, parody, aphorisms, rhetoric, a deep respect for and interest in nature, and an inherent heterogeneous style). This multi-dimensional writing constitutes a significant ambiguity that enables lves to communicate a philosophical message of the eminent and influential transcendental writers, which he revered.

This work analyses a construction of the feminine plural DP in Central Ladin, which is particularly interesting in order to inquire DP structure and the morphosyntactic dynamics triggering agreement and concord. According to lazy concord, adjectives and modifiers in prenominal position never acquire plural marking, but only gender, whereas nouns in preadjectival position can optionally receive number features.

Abstract:
This work represents a research on the nature of the causal efficiency of law, i.e. on how the political command is communicated by authority and received by those who must obey it. In the words of political philosophy of aristotelic tradition, it is the classical problem of the “government over free and equal men”, i.e., the problem of compatibility between political government and the freedom of human act and political rights. In the words of kantian practical philosophy, the problem consists in the compatibility between individual’s moral autonomy and juridical system’s heteronomy, i.e. it consists in justifying the dominion of one man over another one, so that the citizen obeys the laws without any kind of submission to a will other than his own. The question requires particular attention to the problem of the nature of political bonds, as communication of political command is necessarily founded on what is common to the members of political society. The work is divided in two parts. The first one proposes a model of practical philosophy whose fundamental structure is common to all major political thinkers of modern times. This model consists in a “moral of obligation” founded on the opposition between law (must) and freedom (will), originated on nominalistic scholastic voluntarism. Within this structure, the problem assumes the form of a dilemma: if law comes from our own will (autonomy), then it becomes necessary to explain how it is possible to command over oneself; if law comes from a will other than our own, then it becomes necessary to explain the difference between law and mere force. In this context, the theories of Hobbes and Rousseau are studied as the theoretical matrix of modern political philosophy and as the two dialectical poles of this opposition. The conclusions derived from the study of these two thinkers are then applied to Kelsen and Kant respectively. The second part proposes a reconstruction of classical philosophy’s position about this problem, meaning by “classical” the tradition that begins with Plato, continues with Aristotle and reaches a new summit with Saint Thomas Aquinas. In this part of the work, a “classical” model of practical philosophy, common to these three authors, is presented. This model consists in an “order of loves”. Two fundamental theses are proposed. The first one is that law is a rational communicable order, whose efficacy is founded on participation of the act of “imperium” of authority in individual’s subjective “imperium” over his own acts. The second one is that the principle of this communication consists in “political concord”, i. e. a “useful friendship” about the ends of society, and that the concrete realization of this order in the citizen’s soul is political virtue, which is analogue to man’s virtue with the same platonic analogy that exists between man’s soul and the city or the State.

This dissertation is mainly aimed to do a mapping or not of occurrence of plural reading in the first person of existing verbs in spoken language in the Baiano semiarid region through a sociolinguistic analysis, checking which linguistic and sociocultural factors that contribute or not to this variation. We sought to investigate the hypothesis that there are patterns of variation and quantitative differences among the communities studied, due to: i) the ethnic background; ii) the community isolation and iii) the distance geographic area of the capital city, urbanization center. For this, it was taken as a research topic verbal agreement with the first person plural (P4) in rural communities of the Baiano semi-arid region, this topic has already been investigated by scholars as Silva (2003) and Lucchesi, Baxter and Silva (2009) which focused only in rural communities marked ethnically, Nina (1980), Almeida (2006), Araujo (2012), in addition to the descriptive analysis undertaken by dialectology scholars of the early twentieth century and by Veado (1982). Perceiving that the studies with the theme of the verbal agreement with P4 take, in most cases, as an example urban Brazilian Portuguese and also the study of pronominal switching (we / us), it is believed that this research becomes relevant because it is a work, in a way, unprecedented, once investigates rural speech and search to see specifically how the verb agreement is made with the first person plural in this variety. It drew up a comparative study between the dialects of the Baiano regions: Rio de Contas and Jeremoabo which according to social history are formed by black people (Barra / Bananal community) and white people (Mato Grosso community), located in the municipality communities of Rio de Contas; remaining Indians in Tapera community, Quilombo remnants in Casinhas community; mestizos and whites people in Lagoa do In?cio community, such communities are located in the municipality of Jeremoabo. In conclusion, the characterization of popular Portuguese of the country is marked by the socio-historical influence of each chosen community. Therefore, it can state that the verbal agreement is a variable phenomenon in the Baiano semi-arid region that it has gained trend towards the use of CV. Thus, it is used the theoretical - methodological model of Variationist Sociolinguistics it was found that the contact of ethnic groups, such as the isolation of some of them, resulted in linguistic differences, so that it can?t be ignored that formation of the popular Brazilian Portuguese language has its roots planted in the rural variety.

Abstract:
In grape juice production, the addition of enzyme preparations during the maceration prior to pressing is a prerequisite for obtaining satisfactory juice yield, besides it improves the organoleptic quality, improving color and bioactive compounds extraction. A second enzyme application may be performed after the pressing process in cloudy juice, in order to reduce this turbidity, facilitating clarification and filtration processes. However, there are a great number of commercial enzymes available to the application on the fruit juice industry, so it is important to know the ability of each enzyme preparation for correct use. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the composition of the different enzymatic preparations in the extraction, quality and bioactive compounds of grape juice from Concord variety. Firstly, the effect of eight different enzyme preparations was evaluated for extraction and quality of grape juice. Subsequently, the best enzyme preparations (Pectinex® Ultra Clear and Lallzyme® Beta) were used in an experimental design to find the optimal time, temperature, enzyme concentration and ratio of Pectinex® Ultra Clear/Lallzyme® Beta which could maximize the extraction of grape juice. Finally, cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) were obtained as a way to immobilize the different enzymes found in the enzyme preparations for grape juice clarification. The experiments were performed at the Laboratory of Biocatalysis and Enzyme Technology, ICTA/UFRGS. The grapes (Concord variety) were provided by Vitivinícola Jolimont, Canela, RS. The enzymatic preparations were characterized through of five enzymatic activities, being total pectinase (PE), polygalacturonase (PG), pectinlyase (PL), pectin methyl esterase (PME) and cellulase (CE). In the same way, the combi-CLEAs were characterized regarding their enzymatic activities, thermal, pH and operational stabilities, and optimal pH and temperature. The bioactive compounds were identified and quantified by HPLC-DAD-MS (High Performance Liquid Chromatography - Diode Array Detector – Mass Spectrum) and the antioxidant activity was performed by the method of ABTS and reducing capacity. High juice yield was obtained with the preparations that presented higher concentrations of PG, PME or PL activities. The Pectinex® Ultra Clear, when compared with the control, provided an increase of 8.7 % in the amount of juice extracted. On the other hand, the highest values of bioactive compounds were found for preparations with higher CE activity (Lallzyme® Beta). However, when PUC and LB were added together, higher values for yield and bioactive compounds were found. Already, regarding the combi-CLEAs, it appears to be a potential immobilized enzyme for clarification of grape juice. Among the combi-CLEAs obtained, combi-CLEAs-BSA presented the best enzyme activities, higher thermal stabilities (3 times more than the soluble enzyme) and it can be reused for 6 cycles with a total conversion of substrate to product. Furthermore, the combi-CLEA-BSA improved the juice clarification, obtaining 56.7 % in turbidity reduction in 1 h. Finally, it can be concluded that the work reached productive and qualitative improvements for grape juice through enzymatic technology.

Abstract:

This essay deals with subject-verb concord in written compositions by Swedish students at Uppsala University. The essay investigates the possibility that students who continue studying English beyond the A level at the university make fewer errors than students who do not continue.

In order to minimize the influence of the students’ gender and first language, only essays written by female students were included in the study; in addition, all students included had Swedish as their first language, and so did their parents. 25 essays by students who continued their studies and 25 essays by students who may not have done so were chosen. All 50 essays were examined for both correct and incorrect instances concerning concord between subjects and verbs in the present tense. The primary verbs to be, to do and to have were analysed as well as regular and irregular verbs.

The results show that the 25 students who continued beyond the A level made fewer errors than the 25 students who may not have continued. The results also indicate that subject-verb concord is not a serious problem for Swedish learners.
