Abstract:
The behaviour of concrete masonry under in-plane compression combined with out-of-plane bending was examined both experimentally and analytically. Ungrouted and grouted masonry, both fully bedded or face-shell bedded, were included in the study. It was found that the masonry under the above stated loading conditions may suffer loss of capacity either due to splitting or shear type of material failure, or by instability. Different loading conditions yield different failure mechanisms, which in turn correspond to different apparent strengths. Theoretical developments are presented leading to es

This research was a step forward to developing data sets for thin layer mortared concrete masonry through systematic experimental and numerical studies. The most commonly observed problems are faulty system configuration, insufficient lateral stiffness, improper detailing, poor material quality and mistakes during construction. Abstract:

Abstract:
This research project is part of a program reviewing the current masonry code NZS 4229: 1986. It involved testing two full-size partially grouted reinforced concrete masonry walls with openings subjected to simulated out-of-plane seismic loading. Theoretical studies were also carried out. The first specimen was C shaped in plan, 904m long, 204m high, with 1.8m long return walls at each end, and there were two doorway openings, one at each end of the main wall. The second specimen plan was the same as the first one, except that there was one door, one middle window and one comer window.. The wa

Abstract:
Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are often used as load-bearing or infill walls in buildings in many countries. Such walls are also commonly found in existing and heritage buildings in Canada. URM walls are strong structural elements when subjected to axial loading, but are very vulnerable under out-of-plane loads. This type of loading may come from different sources , including seismic or blast events. When subjected to blast, wall elements experience large pressures on one of their faces due to the high pressure produced in the air when an explosion takes place. This wave of compressed air t
