Full textThe main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the potential contribution of certain work conditions of the parents on the family and, ultimately, on the psychological well-being and educational success of young Canadians. Young people refer to the cohort aged 12-15, who typically attend High school. This project is from the large sample of Canadian data from the NLSCY - the national longitudinal survey of children and youth - Statistics Canada. The themes identified in this study are at the heart of current social issues. It is now recognized that educational success represents major social concerns giving rise to large mobilizations. Family remains an anchor point in the development of young people and their success. On the other side, it is clear that the work world has profound impacts, which affect the psychological health of workers and, consequently, the harmonization of work and family. Thus, the difficulty of balancing work and family can have an impact on the psychological well-being of the parents and, incidentally, can negatively affect family dynamics, well-being and educational success of young people. This thesis aims to understand the impacts of the work of parents on the family and on their children in adolescence. Specifically, the purpose of this project is to acquire of a better understanding of the dynamics between work, parental conditions, psychological well-being or educational success, in order to develop an explanatory framework based on a multidimensional model. This study, based on multivariate context, relies on the ecological perspective of human development proposed by Bronfenbrenner (1979). The model used for this study highlights factors in interaction that characterize different environments in which adolescents are living. The scientific writings allowed identifying an empirical model that provides a relational structure of those factors. Few studies to date have attempted to integrate all of these factors in a model. The results of this project can help guide the development of preventive strategies and the promotion of intervention programs, both in the field of education and management. The proposed model assumes an influence of parental work conditions on family environment (family functioning, psychological well-being of the parents or parenting), which, in turn, impacts on the psychological well-being of adolescents or their educational success. The variables included in this model were selected on the basis of empirical support in the scientific literature. The data come from the large sample of NLSCY, which was designed to collect detailed information on the factors that affect the cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the behavior of children and young people. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. The main results of this thesis are presented in the form of articles. Structural equations model analysis allowed validating the adequacy of the postulated model, which suggests a chain of associations in which the parents work appears to contribute indirectly, through family dynamics, to the psychological well-being or educational success of adolescent.

The present study calls upon self-determination theory and the concept of maternal gatekeeping to further the understanding of fathers’ early experience of parenthood. It aims to explain fathers’ parental and marital satisfaction, as well as their participation in child care by considering mothers’ motivations, attitudes and beliefs. Ninety-three couples expecting the birth of their first child completed pre and postnatal questionnaires. A path model suggests that introjected and externally regulated extrinsic maternal motivations, but not their endorsement of maternal gatekeeping attitudes and beliefs, significantly account for fathers’ parental satisfaction. Mothers’ introjected extrinsic motivation indirectly explains fathers’ marital satisfaction, through mothers’ support of the satisfaction of their three fundamental psychological needs (mediator). Finally, fathers’ participation in child care is accounted for by mothers’ identified extrinsic motivation and endorsement of less traditional beliefs.

But if the feminist movement is improved to be the critical moment, exploration needs to know how was generated historically a collective attitude to revolt against female condition, and at the same time a male struggle for the priviledges that the sexual division offers. After this structural history of the "champ", we have explained the feminist movement of the seventies in terms of struggle for the definition of feminism. This struggle generated a processus of automatisation of feminism struggles that tends, with the conflict of different positions and declarations against male domination and the benefits of the movement, to involve himself in a competition for the redistribution of power. This autonomisation implies an investment of the militantes energies in specifics institutions (woman's right governmental office, feminist studies). That has for goals to think or to manage the feminist struggle instead of a more collective movement. At the lead of this movement we show the weight of the intellectual and socially factions of the militantes

The different reasons of abandoning that appear in the brazilian society, and a psychological analysis of the repercussions of this situation in the developpement of those children's personality, are described. A few months' research has been accomplished in a brazilian institution for abondoned children awaiting adoption. This wait is not without consequences for the abandoned. Some aspects of children's behaviour in a adoption process have been observed, especially a massive and permanent distress. Observations aiming children of the institution who were adopted, particularly in france, have also taken place, in order to study the behaviour of children who have left this institution. Last of all, an examination of the adequate solutions concerning the abandoned children's problems in brazil, and the exactly space that the adoption policy must take in this matter, are analysed

The paradigm gives new life to the questions about the giving and taking, classical questions of the anthropology and of the philosophy that the psychological field abandoned. The advanced theoretical and clinical work retakes the crucial question in the specific area of the family where the giving and take are crossed in long relation by the debts of origin. The balance of the exchange with living persons of different generations builds a context with the accountancy of the past relation through the past generations facing the future generation. The relational dynamic grasps the partners in different conflicts of interest particularly with the conflicts of priority of concerns to accept to receive or to authorize oneself to give (conflicts and split of loyalties). .

Full textThis paper aims to understand how the process leading up to the decision to become a parent is played out in the subjective experience of individuals. To this end, 18 autobiographical interviews were conducted with men and women who have recently become parents or are expecting a child. The analysis of the accounts indicates that the desire for a child is, for all the participants in the survey, a central element in the process leading to the decision to become a parent, a state experienced prior to the commitment to parenthood that favours its realization. Moreover, the data collected highlight the importance, for many people, of validating a desire for a child in their love partner at the time of couple formation, a validation that is most often played out through tacit exchanges and that constitutes the starting point for the child's project. The analysis also shows that entry into parenthood always occurs within a continuum between a planned child and an unplanned pregnancy, represented by three scenarios: 1) several births result from the development of a planned child, 2) some relate to an episode of unplanned pregnancy, 3) while others occur following a more or less planned pregnancy. Although some factors considered significant in the process leading to the decision to become a parent overlap with these three scenarios, each one involves exchanges, reflections, feelings, choices or constraints on the part of the parents interviewed that are specific to it.

Full textEating disorders (EDs) have been gaining increasing visibility in the national and international scientific context, configuring a health problem that has worried professionals of the area, parents and educators. Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are the most prevalent types of EDs and have a multifactorial etiology. From the perspective of psychoanalysis, the ED can be understood as a dysfunctional response to latent family conflicts, a failed attempt to mask emotional suffering that cannot be represented symbolically nor elaborated or accepted by the family, revealing a complex trauma that interconnects the individual, relational and group (family) dimensions. Considering this scenario, this study aimed to investigate and analyze, through psychological evaluation, the psychic functioning and family experiences of fathers, mothers and their daughters diagnosed with EDs, based on the psychoanalytic theory. This was a descriptive-exploratory and cross-sectional study, with a qualitative focus and multiple case study design. Participants were four adolescents and young adults diagnosed with EDs (AN or BN), attending a specialized service of a university hospital in the state of São Paulo, and their parents, totaling 12 participants, configuring four cases defined by the father-mother-daughter triads. The instruments used to collect the data were: (1) Sociodemographic Data Form and Economic Classification Criteria Brazil; (2) Raven’s Progressive Matrices Test - General Scale; (3) Questionnaire for Eating Disorder Diagnosis (Q-EDD) (for the patients only); (4) Semi-structured Interview Scripts (5) Rorschach’s Psychodiagnostic Test; (6) Family Drawing Procedure with Stories (FD-S); (7) Fieldnotes; and (8) Medical records. The instruments were applied individually, face-to-face, in up to two data collection sessions with each participant. The material collected was audio-recorded and later transcribed and analyzed according to the guidelines of each instrument. The data of the fathers, mothers and daughters were triangulated and organized according to each family unit and interpreted from the perspective of the psychoanalytic theoretical framework. The results showed weaknesses in the psychic development of the fathers, mothers and daughters, at the individual level and, consequently, at the relational and group levels. The participants presented shortcomings in the constitution of the psychic envelope that enables the formation and functioning of the ego, which made it difficult to establish the self-other differentiation and the limits of the internal/external world, leading to the emergence of primitive separation anxieties that hindered the process of individuation of the daughters. The fathers and mothers showed fragile narcissistic foundations and difficulty in fulfilling the emotional demands of their daughters, which prevented them from being empathic with their suffering. The moments of meals were not experienced as pleasurable or profitable for dialogue among the members of the family, being unconsciously avoided, accentuating the precariousness of intra-family communication. It is hoped that this study may provide knowledge for the clinical practice regarding the articulation between psychic functioning (individual level) and family experiences (relational/group level) and the manifestation of ED symptoms, leading to a broader comprehension of the underlying individual and family psychological aspects. The results highlight advances in the knowledge of the area and can contribute to support the actions and interventions of professionals involved in care, prevention and health promotion

The pathologies of the old age engender very often greater vulnerability both on the plan physical and psychic. However, the resistance of number of elderly can be a surprise and it is true in the only purpose to value the sense of their life. And although our society make state of a double negation to the old age - moved forward in age and death - the old age remains a state of mind

Full textThis research aims to evaluate the risk of complicated grief disorder (CG) and the contribution of psychological support (professional, or personal and group, and online) following a perinatal loss. 29 bereaved French parents were met for a total of five meetings : the first one, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months after the first meeting. A mixed methodology was used, drawing on qualitative interviews (evaluated through the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and the Alceste programm) and two questionnaires (Inventory of Complicated Grief and General Health Questionnaire 28).The parents were 21 women (72%) and 8 men (28%), with a mean age of 31.4 years old. The maximum time between the child’s death and the first meeting is about 10 months, while the minimum is 22 days. 44% of deaths occurred due to medical problems and 35% to a Late Termination of Pregnancy. Only 22% of children lived (up to a maximum of 96 days) and 79% died in utero. Our research confirmed that perinatal loss is a difficult and risky event. Only more than 18 months a half after the loss, the parents reached the uncomplicated grief threshold. Participation in support groups has proved useful while online groups can influence the development of psychopathological disorders. The social role and cultural impositions of gender influence the expression of grief. Regarding the emotional support, the closeness and help of the partner and family are very important. Remembering and commemorating the child despite the passing of time and subsequent pregnancies are fundamental to move forward

Full textThe aim of this thesis was to study the effects of social synchronisers on attention level, and its daily and weekly variations in 5- to 10-year old children at school. Following Bronfenbrenner'smodel, three. Attention and its variations were assessed using cancellation tests. Data relating to group leisure activities and parental work were collected from families using questionnaires. The effects of three types of school-day organisation were compared for 366 children. Frequency indices for participating in group leisure activities were obtained from 614 children. The study of the parental work effects involved measuring the length of the work-day of both parents (199 children), the constraints of work organisation, and the professional stress of the mother and father (460 children and their parents. ). The results confirm the role adjusting weekly school hours plays in a child's attention level and its variations, unrelated to gender. With regard to effects of group leisure activities on school attention , a critical threshold was identified in the youngest children, while beneficial effects were observed in older children. The length of parental time available to children resulting from parental work organisation, organisational constraints and professional stress influenced the child's attention at school. The effects of the mother's or father's work can be differentiated. The child's age would appear to be a moderating variable on all the relationships studied. The value of an ecosystem-based approach that models the environmental effects and their interactions on the child's psychological rhythms will also be discussed

Full textThe recent history of humanity is marked by organized violence in the territory of Rwanda which has reached the extent of genocide in 1994. These events have left deep impacts in the trajectories of individuals, families and society as a whole. In order to approach the experience of violence and its consequences, the concept of trauma is often used in clinical psychology. Several research studies show its intergenerational effects and transmission based on data collected from offspring’s perspective. This qualitative study aims to explore the parental perspective. We explore the representation of genocide experiences and intergenerational transmission in Rwandan parents living in the region of Quebec. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 parents and the verbatim reports were analyzed. The link between individual history and collective history is central to the expression of emotional and relational experiences. The events of the genocide are represented as a source of suffering but also as a source of knowledge. There is a major change in the representation of the "other" that has become a figure capable of extreme violence and indifference. The genocide and its effects are referred to as unspeakable and associated with a feeling of strangeness. Kinyarwanda language is used by the participants in an attempt to name the genocide and its effects. The act of transmission, as well as the act of "non-transmission", are particularly important for "parents-survivors" who search to maintain continuity on three levels (narcissistic, filiation and affiliation) that have been threatened by the genocide. Intergenerational transmission mechanisms are guided by cultural rules, the parent-witness' position and their capacity of mentalization. Silence helps to restore and transmit codes of conduct and prohibition. The objects of transmission are linked to the cultural imaginary, especially through the position of the ancestor, rituals of death and the code of revenge and honor.

Full textWith our ecological approach, we tried to question wether, and how, the socio-emotional development of children in gay and lesbian families is influenced by the social environmental quality (couple adjustment, social support and support relating to the children by the social network, support for the identity of couple by the social network, knowledge and acceptance of the situation by the social network). Questionnaires and interviews were used with couples and children. The twelve families here studied appeared to be homogeneous from the point of view of the quality of their social environment which proves overall satisfactory. The twenty children (aged from 6 to 16 years and born from a former heterosexual union of one of the homosexual parents) obtain, in the whole, satisfactory results (self-esteem, perceived competences, psychopathological problems, quality of the parent-child relationship). We highlighted thin effects of the environmental quality on the regard of self-esteem, perceived competences, psychopathological problems and quality relationship with the biological parent. The relationship quality with the non biological parent is the component the most strongly and positively influenced: for the child, the fact that the non biological parent is sex opposed to the heterosexual parent could assuage and lessen the competition between them and thus contribute to the quality of the relationship between the child and the non biological parent. It also appeared, for example, that if the children experience their situation rather well, the matter of confrontation to their siblings and the disclosure of their family situation raises a few problems to some of them

Full textThe links established according to the rules of kinship and intersubjective links inherent in the family organize, in certain conditions, the child's subjectivation of his/her position and place in the family. They trigger the progressive development and integration of the similar and the dissimilar in the link, et the dual level at which this process of integration can occur : at the mental level, with regard to his position according to the rules of kinship (filiation, alliance, cousins) ; and at the psychic level, in his representation of his role according to the narcissistic and objective organization present in the intersubjective link. The quality of the subjective portrayal of the genogram (kinship schema drawn and commented by the child in a clinical context) might be significant of the organization by the unconscious of the dual difference between the sexes and generations represented by Oedipus. The genogram is analized from two angles, as shown by its construction : that of conceptual meaning and unconcious meaning ; and that of the modes of differentiating the similar from the dissimilar. The first study distinguishes the stages of developing kinship, especially the key age of nine, and demonstrates the influences of gender and family environment on subjectivation. The second analyzes the role of placing the dissimilar under tension with the similar in the child's ability perform subjectivation

Full textThis thesis is an attempt to enlighten the fonctioning of actual gabonise family and to retrace if possible her evolution as a result of the perception of europeans and industrial arrival using two speeches delivered by adults and youths. Surely, like all developing countries societies, gabonise society develops and consecutive evolutions are noticed with arrival of modernisations that affect on the familiar way of life, organisation and children education. These modifications are received and analysed differently by adults and youths, the referency system not being the same to each. Gabonise family has two different ways of life; firsty, the father traditional chief of the family, secondly the most educated member of the family who enjoy high social level subsidize the unfavourable rest of the the family. Two considerations can be drawn; we observe a tendency named traditionalist that favour the familiar custom, the other called modernist that introduce new ways of life which reflected on children education. Finaly certain relase to keep practical foodstuffes and initiatves are seen. We can say that certain practice changes, there are two approaches of the family way of life; children are confused perplexly because they don't know which model is applicable. The child is therfore confronted with two ways; the traditionalists who requiere the tradition and on the other hand the modernists that struggle to be more and more present in the new society

Full textThree meta-analyses were conducted to synthesize results of previous research on the association between adult attachment with parents and the quality of romantic relationships in adulthood. These meta-analyzes address the link between attachment security and three components of romantic relationships, namely the quality of interactions, attachment to the partner and dyadic satisfaction. Results indicate a moderate association between adult attachment and each of these components of romantic relationships. A longitudinal study was subsequently conducted to address specific questions raised by these meta-analyses. The link between attachment and romantic relationships in adulthood was examined in a longitudinal study, starting in adolescence and continuing until participants were 41-years-old (mean). Seventy-five individuals participated at three different time points. The first participation took place in 1992 or 1996 (time 1), the second in 2007 (time 2), and the third in 2019 (time 3). Measures on the quality of their relationships, and the stability of their relationships were obtained at times 2 and 3, where as attachment data (Adult Attachment Interview; AAI) was collected at time 1, when participants were late adolescents or early adults. A double mediation model shows that adolescents who are more preoccupied with attachment are less intimate and less involved in their romantic relationships at the age of 28; that a low level of perceived intimacy and engagement at the age of 28 is associated with low level of stabilityin romantic relationships in the early 40s; that a shorter relationship in the early 40s is associated with a weaker commitment to the partner. The results of these studies suggest that attachment organization in late adolescents and young adults may have a bearing on the mechanisms involved in the dynamics of romantic relationships during adulthood.

Full textFor the child, the first parental function is to place him in a lineage which enables him to web his identity in the frame of a filiation. Under the light of the intra psychological interactions in mother-child groups under study in CMPP, and starting from analysis of projective and thematic test, our objective is to study parenthood in Guadeloupe. In Guadeloupe, family organizes itself around and extremly codified model : the matrifocal system which is prevalent and whose main feature is the mother. This system is characterize by the father, an evanescent person, frequency of children out of wedlock, siblings from, different fathers are the consecutive features of matrifocal family. This family shaken and weakened due to changes society. Increase of split families, weakening in of parents' power, augmentation in suicide amond teenagers, abortion amid adolescent mothers as well as serious pathologies are the trends of those patients we are dealing with in our medical centers. These symptomatic compel us to pay attention as therapist. But during several centuries, breaks in the parent's functions and rights had consequences on the behavior and the psyche of those in their parenting role. According to Dr Houzel, the circle in which the child grows is a mixed combination of conscious and unconscious representations the mother brings to the child. It is a relationnal system between two beings oneself and another, between generations and sexes and in-between the impact of the relationship within the couple and finally the mother-father's child relationship. Our hypothesis is that ability of the mother to convey constructive parental images to her child trough identification depends of the quality of her own parental imago

Full textWith the arrival of prenatal diagnosis the nature of the difficulties encountered by the parents and the practitioners confronted with handicap has changed considerable. They have now the possibility to know about the existence of certain pathologies even before the birth of the child and they are obliged to choose which issue they will give to the pregnancy. Whatever their decision, the discovery of a foetal pathology takes a decisive part in the history of the mothers who are confronted with it. Nevertheless, what can we say about the consequences of such a diagnosis, not only on the maternal psyche but also on the relationship between the mother and the coming-child? What are the incidences on the development of the child? The purpose of this study is to explain the incidence of prenatal diagnosis on the place the child has in the maternal fantasy, via the experience of pregnancy and the bond established between the mother and the child to be. This longitudinal research has been carried on five young women who after a prenatal screening procedure have been faced with the discovery of a urinary pathology for their baby. We had five semi-directive interviews with each of them: two during their pregnancy, three during the post-natal phase. The whole of this study is based on the analysis of the speech of the mothers interviewed. Three different methods have been used: a statistical and data processed analysis, achieved with the help of the "Alceste program", a thematic analysis and an analysis of the enunciation. This work shows that the announcement of the diagnosis is always at the origin of an intense suffering for the women who are faced with it, whatever the gravity (medically speaking) of the pathology. Also, the way the child is idealized by his mother seems to be particularly influenced by this knowledge which highly determines the projects and the hopes the parents have for the child. The announcement of the pathology modifies the image of the child which had been elaborated before and the child, being "dis" - idealized may be rejected by his parents

Full textThe present study addresses the relationship between children athletes’ soccer motivation and their parents’ behaviors, as perceived by the children and by the parents themselves. Data were collected from 207 children aged between 7 and 12 years old who played in an elite soccer team in Quebec, and their parents. Children completed a paper questionnaire measuring their motivation toward their sport and their perception of their parents’ supportive behaviors (autonomy support and involvement) in the context of soccer. Parents were invited to complete an online questionnaire about their autonomy support and involvement toward their child in the context of soccer. A total of 131 fathers and 149 mothers completed the questionnaire. The relationship between children’s soccer motivation and their perceptions of their parents’ behaviors were evaluated while controlling for the contribution of other variables. Results indicate that supportive behaviors from mothers and fathers, as perceived by children, are positively associated with children’s autonomous motivation toward soccer. Perceived supportive behaviors from mothers, but not fathers, are positively linked to athletes’ controlled motivation and negatively to their level of amotivation. Perceived parental behaviors are found to be better predictors of their motivations than parents’ self-reports. Children’s gender moderates the link between children’s level of controlled motivation and their perception of maternal supportive behaviors. Specifically, maternal supportive behaviors predict a higher level of controlled motivation, but only for girls. No other moderation effect was found. Results are discussed in relation to their theoretical and clinical implications. Suggestions for future studies are also discussed. Keywords: motivation, self-determination theory, motivational climate, parents, child athlete, elite soccer

Full textThis work deals with the relationship to school Parents of primary school in Gabon. On the psycho orientation, the study is done through the representations that parents of school. It shows firstly that the representations and the resulting relationships have changed over time, from the colonial era to today, with the image that parents have the role of schools in Gabonese society. Second, it indicates that, far from always conflicting, these reports depend on the experiences of parents of the importance they attach to the School and what it means to them. We distinguish three groups of behavior that reveal practices and parent-teacher communication in connection with their representations of the school. The first group is parents who are building their relationship to school from their personal history with the school. The second group refers to parents for whom school is an autonomous institution and sufficient. The third group consists of parents for whom school is an autonomous institution but insufficient. However, for reasons related to living conditions and availability, few parents are fully involved in the academic success of children. In educational terms, this involvement is manifested by the means of families. This study also relies on a literature review of Gabon's School, on a field survey by interviews with parents and teachers, supported by references in social psychology and interpreted using the recent work on relationships of parents to school in sociology and educational sciences

Full textIn believing they know that Father Christmas exists, the child is said to be experiencing the sacred, which situates this figure as a myth and as an object of belief. This could take the form of an idelized object, a treasured object, a fetishistic object or a relic. When he discovers that Father Christmas does not exist, the child find himself confronted with the loss of an object taken from a support-framework established by the myth. W>hat "destinies" shall he reserve for this object of belief? The parents, confronted with their mystification, set up scenarios of legitimation one of which, the scenario of approach to reality and to castration, explicitly tackles castration and plays a decisive role with regards to the destiny of the object of belief, in the child. Indeed, when it is present in a preponderant fashion, that is to say when a sort of fantastical prescription of castration is witnessed in the parents, the child reorganizes himself by embarking upon the path of symbolization, Whereas, when there is ponderation of the other scenarios which deny, avoid or ignore castration, difficulties in setting up the process of symbolization are observed in the child

Full textPhysical activity is associated with many physical, psychological and social health benefits. However, only 42. 5% of French are engaged in a sufficient level of PA to induce health gains. Consequently, this dissertation focuses on the reasons why people engage or not engage in PA. The literature has mainly based on social cognition models to identify psychological processes underlying the adoption of health behaviors such as PA. However, these models do not integrate, in their original formulation, factors that could influence the variables that they define. Based on the HAPA (Schwarzer, 1992), this doctoral project aims to identify factors that could influence the patterns of PA prediction. It highlights that the patterns of PA prediction vary depending on chronological age and context of retirement (study 1). Subjective age contributes to self-efficacy and intentions to perform PA (study 2). Moreover, the participation in PA is determined by passion toward work and work/family conflict (study 3). More precisely, work/family conflict aIso contributes to PA self-effïcacy and PA intentions (study 4). Finally, Conscientiousness predicts social cognitive variables, described in the motivational phase of the HAPA, i. E. Self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, and risk perception (study 5). Overall, this project contributes to extend the HAPA and, more generally, social cognition models and provides a better comprehension of psychological processes underlying PA participation
