Abstract:
The objective of this research is to advance the field of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis for induction motors. This involves processing the signals produced by induction motors, classifying the types and estimating the severity of induction motors faults. A typical process of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis for induction motors consists of four steps: data acquisition, signal analysis, fault detection and post-processing. A description of various kinds of faults that can occur in induction motors is presented. The features reflecting faults are usually embedded in transient

Wireless sensors are used widely for condition monitoring in electric machines. The metal enclosure of an electric motor restricts the signal from sensors to radiate outside. The signal from the metal cavity needs to be guided to the only opening in the enclosure, through a narrow gap between the stator and the rotating rotor. Gap waveguide technology is proposed as a solution by texturing the stator surface with electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures. Arrays of periodic holey structures are used to realize the metasurface waveguide. Two Bravais lattice structures – square and hexagonal, ar

It is often impractical to measure vibrations directly at /or close to their sources when condition monitoring gearbox systems. It is common to measure the vibration distant from the source due to limited access to the component which is to be monitored. Vibration measured in this way may be significantly distorted by the effect of signal transmission paths and interference from other sources. Two effects of a mechanical fault are considered: load torque oscillations and airgap eccentricity. The analytical modelling using the magnetomotive force and permeance wave approach leads to two stator current models. The fault provokes amplitude or phase modulation of the fundamental current component. Suitable detection methods are spectral analysis and parameter estimation in steady state whereas time-frequency analysis is required during transients.

However, motor failure not only results in physical damage to the motor, but can also hinder the operations of the entire system when the failure severity forces motor shutdown, consequently causing the collapse of production lines, enormous financial losses, and other disastrous outcomes. Thus, a means to monitor the operating

Online condition monitoring is preferred specifically in critical induction machines for timely analysis of their health and to predict any incipient failures. Negative sequence current monitoring is one of the well-known condition monitoring applications that capable of identifying stator faults in induction motor as well as producing fast and reliable results using a simple measurement technique. However, the technique is sensitive to asymmetrical sources of negative sequence, not only due to motor faults but also due to the disturbances such as sensor calibration, inherent non-idealities (s

The squirrel cage induction motor is the most common means of converting electrical energy to mechanical energy. As such they form a very important part of modem industrial plants. Adverse service conditions may cause faults to develop within a motor that eventually result in the motor failing. If warning of an impending failure can be obtained, the motor can be scheduled for repair or replacement before catastrophic failure occurs, thus avoiding costly excess downtime of plant. A fault which occurs in cage induction motors, is where a fracture occurs between the end ring and a rotor b

Abstract:
Air gap eccentricity fault is one of the major faults that afflict the life and performance of rotating machines. Eccentricity fault, in the worst case, causes a stator rotor rub. Thus, a condition monitoring scheme to identify eccentricity fault at its initial stage is necessary. The most widely practised air gap monitoring schemes for synchronous machines are expensive and invasive sensors based. This work has focussed on developing an inexpensive, non-invasive, air gap monitoring technique especially for salient pole synchronous machines. Motor current signature analysis has been mostly pre

Different from most complicated fault diagnosis algorithms, this thesis proposes a compact fault-diagnosis algorithm through the observation of electrical characteristics of the motors. By employing this algorithm, it not only reduces the computation time of fault detection, but also decreases the investment cost of hardware circuits. In this proposed hardware scheme, microprocessor control chip serves as the core of the system, by which the peripheral d

This thesis aims to identify methods for detection of damper winding faults in synchronous machines (SMs) powered by variable frequency drives (VFDs). The problem of failing damper windings has received attention after reports of serious damage which have been discovered during maintenance checks. Since SMs often are used for critical applications, failures can be devastating if they cause total breakdowns. Also, VFDs are believed to cause additional stress in the damper windings of SMs and since the utilisation of VFDs is increasing, the problem is expected to become more common in the future
