Abstract:
This chapter discusses the cartographic approach to clause structure according to which information structure directly relates to syntactic heads that project within the clausal left periphery. This view is supported by data from languages in which information-structure-sensitive notions (e.g. topic, focus) are encoded by means of discourse markers that trigger various constituent displacement rules. Such empirical facts are compatible with the cartographic view in which lexical choices condition information packaging and clause structure. Put together, the cross-linguistic data presented in t

Abstract:
Philosophers have long agreed that moral responsibility might not only have a freedom condition, but also an epistemic condition. Moral responsibility and knowledge interact, but the question is exactly how. Ignorance might constitute an excuse, but the question is exactly when. Surprisingly enough, the epistemic condition has only recently attracted the attention of scholars, and it is high time for a full volume on the topic. The chapters in this volume address the following central questions. Does the epistemic condition require akrasia? Why does blameless ignorance excuse? Does moral ignor

Abstract:
‘The condition of England’ considers why the upswing in technological progress caused such widespread suffering for so many people for so long. It begins with a broad question: how did the technological revolution change the structure of society? It looks at social tables, dividing the population into six social classes—the landed classes, bourgeoisie, lower middle class, farmers, workers, and cottagers and paupers—and how they changed from 1688 to 1867. It is no surprise that the share of national income going to farmers and land owners declined during the Industrial Revolution, but why did w

Rawls says that there are two sources for the primacy assigned to the basic structure: the profound effects of basic social institutions on persons and their future prospects, and the need to maintain background justice. This chapter discusses the main reasons behind Rawls’s position that the basic structure of society is the primary subject of justice, and that the political constitution, property, and the economic system are the first subject to which principles of justice apply. First, the primacy of the basic structure is necessary for the freedom, equality, and independence of moral perso

Abstract:
This chapter uses the notion of a Moufang structure to show that if Δ‎ is a spherical building satisfying the Moufang condition and Γ‎ is a descent group of Δ‎, then the fixed point building Δ‎Γ‎ also satisfies the Moufang condition. The discussion begins with the notation: Let (W, S) denote the type of Δ‎, let G = Aut(Δ‎) and let G° denote the group of type-preserving elements of G. The chapter then presents the conditions for an element g of G to be unipotent and for a subgroup U of G to be unipotent. It also describes a unipotent group U stabilizing a residue R and a unipotent element fixin

Abstract:
James Tenney reflects on form in twentieth-century music, first by offering an alternative to the conventional definition of form and introducing a number of new terms. He then considers three factors that determine form: shape, structure, and state. In relation to these factors, he describes three aspects of form to consider at each hierarchical level: the structural (internal relations), the morphological (shape), and the statistical (state, condition). These relations between state, shape, and structure at adjacent hierarchical levels are relevant to the old problem of “form versus content.
