Thesis (MSD) --Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, 2015 (Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics).
Includes bibliographic references: leaves 37-42.
Background: Craniofacial skeletal asymmetry is a common finding in the general population that often goes undetected. Interest in this topic has led to many studies aimed at describing this type of asymmetry, its distribution and etioIogy. The cranial base, being cIosely related to the face and brain, is a key component in craniofacial growth and may also display varying amounts of asymmetry contribut

Abstract:
This thesis has been motivated and developed within a collaboration project between the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bologna and the company Skanray Europe Srl. In detail, this work focuses on Cone Beam CT reconstruction of the human head, with particular interest in detecting small soft tissue elements within white and grey brain matter. This problem is expecially difficult due to the small contrast in the X-ray attenuation coefficient between the two substances to be discriminated. After accurately modelling the data acquisition process (also according to the requireme

Abstract:
This study characterized maxillary sinus mucositis (SIMS) adjacent to teeth with apical periodontitis (AP), and assessed its resolution three months after endodontic treatment. 29 subjects who maxillary posterior teeth with AP were imaged with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Resolution of SIMS was assessed with CBCT three months after treatment, and periapical healing was assessed using the PAI after six months. Four non-compliant subjects were discontinued and SIMS was identified in 14/25 subjects (56%). Three months post-treatment, SIMS was resolved fully in 3/10 subjects (30%), and pa

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to compare skeletal and dental changes assessed by digital volumetric images produced during and after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) between a bone-borne anchored expansion appliance and a conventional tooth-borne RME. Initial steps included the development of a methodology to analyze CBCT images. Reliability of traditional two dimensional (2D) cephalometric landmarks identified in CBCT images was explored, and new landmarks identifiable on the CBCT images were also evaluated. This methodology was later tested through a clinical trial with 62 patients where s
