The organization of the renal medulla of the Gambel's quail, Callipepla gambelii, kidney was examined to determine the number of loops of Henle and collecting ducts and the surface area occupied by the different nephron segments as a function of distance down the medullary cones. Eleven medullary cones were dissected from the kidneys of four birds, and the tissue was processed and sectioned for light microscopy. In addition, individual nephrons were isolated on which total loop thin descending segment and thick prebend segment lengths were measured. The results show no correlation between the

In order to explore the effects of microstructures of membranes on superhydrophobic properties, it is critical, though, challenging, to study microstructures with different morphologies. Two superhydrophobic morphologies could be successfully prepared for oil-water separation: a parabolic morphology and a truncated cone morphology. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and wettability were characterized. The results indicated that the water contact angle and the adv

Infant visual performance is much worse than that of adults. According to one account,1 the striking morphological immaturity of infant foveal cones contributes directly to the poor vision of infants. This explanation depends on the assumption that infants use their immature foveal cones to control visual performance. In another account,2 immaturity of the foveal cones contributes indirectly to poor visual performance by forcing the infant to use the (relatively mature) extrafoveal retina to do tasks the adult does foveally. Abstract:
The effects of increased eye size on retinal cell topography and morphology were examined using experimental animal models of myopia (chick and marmoset). Retinas from experimentally enlarged eyes have significantly larger areas than control eyes. Changes in the topography of cell density and the morphological structure of dendritic arbors of cells in the inner retina are consistent with the hypothesis that the retina stretches as the eye grows. In the marmoset, experimentally enlarged eyes had higher foveal cone densities than controls suggesting that stretch is an important factor in the inc

A short but productive cruise aboard RV William Kennedy tested various new field equipment near Halifax (port of departure and return) but also in areas that could also benefit science understanding. The GSC-A Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle equipped with bathymetric, sidescan and sub-bottom profiler was successfully deployed for the first time on Scotian Shelf science targets. It surveyed three small areas: two across known benthic sponge, Vazella (Russian Hat) within a DFO-directed trawling closure area on the SE flank of Sambro Bank, bordering Emerald Basin, and one across known pockmar

Flow and pressure applied during polymer transformation processes of semi-crystalline polymers can significantly affect the kinetics of crystallization, final morphology, and properties of the part. In commonly used polymer transformation processes, the molten polymer is subjected to high pressure and thermal stress, as well as intense shear and elongational flow fields. The effect of pressure on crystallization kinetics is significant from both scientific and technological perspectives since the polymer solidifies under high pressure in important industrial processing techniques. Thin silica film formation from adsolubilization of inorganic silica precursors, letra-n-butoxysilane (TBOS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TBOS) in admicellar polymerization were studies. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at 700 uM and octyl phenol ethoxylate or Triton X-100 at 200 uM were used as surfactant templates for adsolubilizates TBOS and TBOS respectively. For the TBOS/CTAB system, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) topographic images showed fibers, hemispheres and flat layers existing along with increase of surface coverge on the mica surface as the TBOS feed concentration was inc

We present a systematic investigation of computational approaches to the modeling of granular materials. Granular materials are ubiquitous in everyday life and in a variety of engineering and industrial applications. Despite the apparent simplicity of the laws governing particle-scale interactions, predicting the continuum mechanical response of granular materials still poses extraordinary challenges. This is largely due to the complex history dependence resulting from continuous rearrangement of the microstructure of granular material, as well as the mechanical interlocking due to grain morph

The environmental fate and transport of energetic compounds on military training ranges are largely controlled by the particle characteristics of low-order detonations. This study demonstrated a method of command detonation, field sampling, laboratory processing, and analysis techniques for characterizing low-order detonation particles from 60 mm and 81 mm mortar rounds containing the insensitive munition formulation IMX-104. Particles deposited from three rounds of each caliber were comprehensively sampled and characterized for particle size, energetic purity, and morphology. The 60 mm rounds
