Abstract:
After the religious wars which convulsed the Confederation were ended by the Second Peace of Kappel in 1531 the Swiss became increasingly absorbed by their own affairs. Yet the restoration of Duke Ulrich to Württemberg under the Peace of Kaaden (1534) created new uncertainty for the Confederation’s outlying associated member to the north, the imperial city of Rottweil. A feud between Catholic Rottweil and a local Protestant dynasty, the Landenbergs (backed by Duke Ulrich), saw a joint Swiss military expedition of Catholic and Protestant cantons come to Rottweil’s aid, though it was recalled. Abstract:
The situation of Konstanz was only settled when Emperor Charles V reduced it to an Austrian territorial town in 1548. And while the Swiss common lordships survived, Huldrych Zwingli contemplated their abolition in favour of two Protestant power blocs under Zürich in the east and Bern in the west. Zwingli did understand the Rhine as a frontier, but from a theological perspective: the achievement of the valiant God-fearing Swiss from small beginnings. Modern historians remain sceptical of the notion of the Rhine as frontier; what the preceding century had created (despite the propaganda war of m

Abstract:
Renewed interest in Swiss history has sought to overcome the old stereotypes of peasant liberty and republican exceptionalism. The heroic age of the Confederation in the fifteenth century is now seen as a turning point as the Swiss polity achieved a measure of institutional consolidation and stability, and began to mark out clear frontiers. This book questions both assumptions. It argues that the administration of the common lordships by the cantons collectively gave rise to as much discord as cooperation, and remained a pragmatic device not a political principle. It argues that the Swiss War

Abstract:
The Swiss (or Swabian) War had its origins beyond Swabia itself, in conflicts between Austrian Tirol and the Rhaetian Leagues; Emperor Maximilian’s plans to invade Italy, however, drew in the Swabian League, which in early 1499 mustered troops to defend its own region from attack or plunder. Imperial troops were sent from the Netherlands, with the result that three separate theatres of war developed: in Vorarlberg, on the Hochrhein, and on the Upper Rhine/Alsace. A series of skirmishes quickly brought hostilities to an end in a ‘war’ which was essentially accidental and avoidable. Much of the

Abstract:
The convulsions which seized southern Germany and Switzerland between 1520 and 1540 included the expulsion of Duke Ulrich of Württemberg (an ally of the Swiss) from his duchy of Württemberg; his intrigues to recapture his duchy by raising peasants in the Black Forest already in the throes of popular rebellion; and the beginnings of Reformed Protestant preaching by Huldrych Zwingli in Zürich. Any of these circumstances could easily have led to outright war on both banks of the Rhine. The Swiss were reluctant to give any support to Duke Ulrich, or to the peasants, though Zürich came to the aid o
