Abstract:
Inhomogeneous and changing temperature distributions in machine tools lead to sometimes considerable quality problems in the manufacturing process. In addition, the switching on and off of aggregates, for example, leads to further fluctuations in the temperature field of machine tools. Aduku, Kuku J. "Can web indicators be used to estimate the citation impact of conference papers in engineering?" Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/622102.

Full text
Abstract:
Although citation counts are widely used to support research evaluation, they can only reflect academic impacts, whereas research can also be useful outside academia. There is therefore a need for alternative indicators and empirical studies to evaluate them. Whilst many previous studies have investigated alternative indicators for journal articles and books, this thesis explores the importance and suitability of four web indicators for conference papers. These are readership counts from the online reference manager Mendeley and citation counts from Google Patents, Wikipedia and Google Books. To help evaluate these indicators for conference papers, correlations with Scopus citations were evaluated for each alternative indicator and compared with corresponding correlations between alternative indicators and citation counts for journal articles. Four subject areas that value conferences were chosen for the analysis: Computer Science Applications; Computer Software Engineering; Building & Construction Engineering; and Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering. There were moderate correlations between Mendeley readership counts and Scopus citation counts for both journal articles and conference papers in Computer Science Applications and Computer Software. For conference papers in Building & Construction Engineering and Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, the correlations between Mendeley readers and citation counts are much lower than for journal articles. Thus, in fields where conferences are important, Mendeley readership counts are reasonable impact indicators for conference papers although they are better impact indicators for journal articles. Google Patent citations had low positive correlations with citation counts for both conference papers and journal articles in Software Engineering and Computer Science Applications. There were negative correlations for both conference papers and journal articles in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. However, conference papers in Building and Construction Engineering attracted no Google Patent citations. This suggests that there are disciplinary differences but little overall value for Google Patent citations as impact indicators in engineering fields valuing conferences. Wikipedia citations had correlations with Scopus citations that were statistically significantly positive only in Computer Science Applications, whereas the correlations were not statistically significantly different from zero in Building & Construction Engineering, Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering and Software Engineering. Conference papers were less likely to be cited in Wikipedia than journal articles were in all fields, although the difference was minor in Software Engineering. Thus, Wikipedia citations seem to have little value in engineering fields valuing conferences. Google Books citations had positive significant correlations with Scopus-indexed citations for conference papers in all fields except Building & Construction Engineering, where the correlations were not statistically significantly different from zero. Google Books citations seemed to be most valuable impact indicators in Computer Science Applications and Software Engineering, where the correlations were moderate, than in Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, where the correlations were low. This means that Google Book citations are valuable indicators for conference papers in engineering fields valuing conferences. Although evidence from correlation tests alone is insufficient to judge the value of alternative indicators, the results suggest that Mendeley readers and Google Books citations may be useful for both journal articles and conference papers in engineering fields that value conferences, but not Wikipedia citations or Google Patent citations.

Abstract:
This study seeks to analyse the evolution of the European International Business Academy's Annual Conferences between the years 1999 and 2011. A collection of the 2221 documents presented across the defined period was processed with the use of a computer-aided tool - the Latent Dirichlet Allocation, powered by artificial intelligence systems - to facilitate the content analysis. The study utilized the R software environment as the platform to apply the method, with the support of a group of compatible libraries to support in the pre-processing, topic modelling and result plotting stages of this study. The method was able to identify 30 underlying research topics across all the documents, and a label was manually assigned to each topic according to its overall theme. Results show an overall growth in number of papers presented, as well as new authors throughout the years, indicating an increase in degree of openness in the Association's Annual Conferences. Specific research topics have also shown to be more discussed across the documents than others, and research on the topics of "Dynamic capabilities, resource-based view and firm internationalization" and "Institutional approaches to International Business research and theory" showed to be trending in recent years of the Conferences. With little need for human intervention, this study was able to successfully apply an automated method to identify the Association's research themes and their evolution throughout the years, reducing researcher's bias and allowing for the efficient analysis of large volumes of text content.<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Albrecht, Thomas, Birgit Jaekel, and Martin Lehnert. "Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems 2013." TUDpress, 2019. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A34054.

Full text
Abstract:
Challenges arising from an increasing traffic demand, limited resource availability and growing quality expectations of the customers can only be met successfully, if each transport mode is regarded as an intelligent transportation system itself, but also as part of one intelligent transportation system with “intelligent” intramodal and intermodal interfaces. This topic is well reflected in the Third International Conference on “Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems” which took place in Dresden 2013 (previous editions: Rome 2009, Leuven 2011). With its variety of traffic management problems that can be solved using similar methods and technologies, but with application specific models, objective functions and constraints the conference stands for an intensive exchange between theory and practice and the presentation of case studies for all transport modes and gives a discussion forum for control engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians and other researchers and practitioners. The present book comprises fifty short papers accepted for presentation at the Third Edition of the conference. All submissions have undergone intensive reviews by the organisers of the special sessions, the members of the scientific and technical advisory committees and further external experts in the field. Like the conference itself the proceedings are structured in twelve streams: the more model-oriented streams of Road-Bound Public Transport Management, Modelling and Control of Urban Traffic Flow, Railway Traffic Management in four different sessions, Air Traffic Management, Water Traffic and Traffic and Transit Assignment, as well as the technology-oriented streams of Floating Car Data, Localisation Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems and Image Processing in Transportation. With this broad range of topics this book will be of interest to a number of groups: ITS experts in research and industry, students of transport and control engineering, operations research and computer science. The case studies will also be of interest for transport operators and members of traffic administration.

Hallowes, David, Mark Butler, David Fig, et al. "Greening the RDP: people, environment, development: report of proceedings [of the] Environmental Justice Networking Forum Constitutive Conference, Kempton Park Conference Centre, 25-27 November 1994." Environmental Justice Networking Forum, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/69373.

Full text
Abstract:
The Environmental Justice Networking Forum’s first national conference had three major objectives: to constitute the organisation on a national basis; to make policy recommendations regarding the implementation of the RDP both for submission to government and as a guide to action by EJNFparticipants; to build and disseminate the workof thelDRC/ANC/ COSATU/ SACP/ SANCO International Mission on Environmental Policy (referred to here as the Mission). EJNF was in itiated at the Earthlife Africa International Environment Conference in 1992 at Pietermaritzburg. That conference mandated an interim national steering committee to guide a process of establishing an organised voice within civil society for environmental justice. It stipulated that the organisation should be formed on a regional basis leading up to the national constitution of EJNF at a national conference. The EJNF conference is thus the culmination of a two year process. During that time, meetings were held to establish EJNF in six regions: Gauteng, Northern Transvaal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu- Natal and OFS. Participating organisations include women’s, rural, youth, religious and environmental organisations, unions, civics and service NGOs. Each region sent delegations to the national conference. Two other regions, Eastern Transvaal and Northern Cape, also sent delegations which will form the focus groups for establishing EJNF in those regions. Regional EJNF participant organisations also elected members to the national steering committee. They took office at the constitutive conference. The minutes of the constitutive session of the conference are not included here but are available from the EJNF national office. The EJNF delegates were joined by a number of guest delegates for the conference on Greening the RDP. They included members of national organisations which represent or work with the constitutuencies which EJNF is developing and researchers working in the sectors covered by the conference. Government was represented by Ministers Kader Asmal (Water Affairs) and Derek Hanekom (Land Affairs), by provincial MECs, by members of standing committees in parliament and provincial legislatures andby ministry or department officials.

Flynt, Peggy. "Content Analysis of the Theory Base Used in the Conference Proceedings of the Association of Educational Communications and Technologies." Thesis, NSUWorks, 2017. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/fse_etd/129.

Full text
Abstract:
The Association for Educational and Communications and Technology (AECT) is the leading organization for educational-technology professionals and a leader in the definition of the field. Since the first AECT definition in 1963, definitional changes have represented a shift from using specific learning components and messages to control learning processes, to using these elements to facilitate and support teaching and learning. The changing definition has reflected the trends in the field and an ever-deepening theory base. Previous researchers have identified a gap between what theories project should happen and the actual design and practice—or what does happen—in technology-enhanced learning environments. In other words, there is often a disconnect between theory, design, and practice. This study addressed changes in theories selected in the field of educational technology. Examining the theories used in the past and how these have changed as AECT’s definition of the field has changed may prove useful in strengthening future connections between theory, design, and practice. Content analysis was used to examine the AECT conference proceedings from 1979 to 2013 to track theoretical shifts over the period studied. Observed changes in theory were further examined using the hype cycle. Systems theory informed the study.

Abstract:
This volume brings together twenty-eight papers from an International conference on attitudes towards the past and the creating of identities in Antiquity. The volume addresses many different approaches to these issues, spanning over many centuries, ranging in time from the Prehistoric periods to the Late Antiquity, and covering large areas, from Britain to Greece and Italy and to Asia Minor and Cyprus. The papers deal with several important problems, such as the use of tradition and memory in shaping an individual or a collective identity, continuity and/or change and the efforts to connect the past with the present. Among the topics discussed are the interpretation of literary texts, e.g. a play by Plautus, the Aeneid, a speech by Lykurgos, poems by Claudian and Prudentius, and of historical texts and inscriptions, e.g. funerary epigrams, and the analysis of the iconography of Roman coins, Etruscan reliefs, Pompeian and Etruscan frescoes and Cypriote sculpture, and of architectural remains of houses, tombs and temples. Other topics are religious festivals, such as the Lupercalia, foundation myths, the image of the emperor on coins and in literature, the significance of intra-urban burials, forgeries connected with the Trojan War, Hippocrates and Roman martyrs.

Abstract:
Communities in New Media started in 1998 as a workshop series at TU Dresden, and since then has annually dealt with online communities at the interface between several disciplines such as education and economics, computer science, social and communication sciences, and more. (See Köhler, Kahnwald & Schoop, 2015). The workshop is traditionally a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue between science and business and serves to share experiences and knowledge among participants from different disciplines, organisations, and institutions. In addition to the core themes of knowledge management and communities (in the chapters of the same name), the main focus of the conference is also on the support of knowledge and learning processes in the field of (media-assisted) higher education. This is complemented by an informational perspective when it comes to more functional and methodological approaches - use cases, workflows, and automation in knowledge management. In addition, systems and approaches for feedback, exchange, and ideas are presented. With the focus of knowledge media design and visual research as well as creative processes, this time there is also a highlight on visual aspects of knowledge management and mediation. For IFKAD 2016, three GeNeMe tracks were accepted which focus on the interface of knowledge communities and knowledge management as well as knowledge media design in science, business, or education. In this conference volume you will find detailed information about these three tracks: -- Knowledge Communities I: Knowledge Management -- Knowledge Communities II: Online Education -- Visual Knowledge Management [From the Preface.]:Preface IX Vorwort XIII Knowledge Communities I: Knowledge Management 1 Process Learning Environments 1 Two Steps to IT Transparency: A Practitioner’s Approach for a Knowledge Based Analysis of Existing IT Landscapes in SME 13 Social Media and Sustainable Communication. Abstract:
Formal concept analysis (FCA) is a mathematical formalism based on order and lattice theory for data analysis. It has found applications in a broad range of neighboring fields including Semantic Web, data mining, knowledge representation, data visualization and software engineering. ICFCA is a series of annual international conferences that started in 2003 in Darmstadt and has been held in several continents: Europe, Australia, America and Africa. ICFCA has evolved to be the main forum for researchers working on theoretical or applied aspects of formal concept analysis worldwide. In 2013 the conference returned to Dresden where it was previously held in 2006. This year the selection of contributions was especially competitive. Abstract:
Forests play a crucial role in preserving terrestrial biodiversity, producing renewable raw materials, and in reducing the scale and impact of climate change. Proper forest management is therefore crucial for today's society. For these reasons, forestry education is no less important because its aim is to educate highly qualified professionals capable of meeting current challenges. Forestry education has already had a relatively rich history, in many European countries over 100, even 200 years. A very important role in forestry education has always been played by the forest itself, which has been the place of teaching and the largest research laboratory. However, given the rapid advances in science and technology development, it is necessary to redefine the place and importance of the forest for university forestry education at present.

Humans order their world by assigning names, that is, by means of “designation”. We name children, fellow humans, animals and plants according to our respective language. And we can just as easily extinguish a name if it strikes us as the appropriate thing to do. This is the also the task of philosophy: to grasp the world via the right “concepts”, a reduction of complexity through naming. To “grasp” the world also means to master it. In this respect, the assignment of names and titles as well as the strict connexion of a name with a bodily person (identity) is a characteristic means or instrument of domination tied to the modern state.]

The question “What is a name?” is often answered in different ways and out of extreme positions (from: names are “meaningless marks” unto: names have “the greatest number of attributes”). In this article the formal and semantic aspects of a name are discussed in comparison with those of a word. Name-giving and name-usage are subjects of consideration and ‒ in addition to that ‒ the traditional sentence “nomen est omen” is discussed.

Abstract:
Until the 18th century the name of a natural person was not a legal issue in Germany. The determination of a person’s name – first and family name – was rather a matter of custom. According to Roman tradition which German law adopted generally it was allowed to change the name without any involvement of the State – no person was legally bound to his or her previous name. The article describes the development to a legal regulation of personal names by the State and describes the rules currently in force in Germany. It is shown that the first name of a child is determined by the (relatively) free choice of the parents, while the child himself is bound to the given name normally through all his life. A change of name is allowed only on the basis of an administrative decision of an authority which requires the person to show an important reason for the change of his or her name. The family name is also set by law. Traditionally, the name of the husband was transferred to the wife. This approach violated the principle of equal rights of men and women guaranteed by the German constitution of the 20th century. The article reports on legal reforms which introduced step-by-step a rather surprising freedom of choice for married couples in the determining their marital name.

Abstract:
The name of the small town Merseburg, some 15 km south of the city of Halle (Saale) has puzzled researchers for decades. Several solutions have been proposed, but all of them were flawed with respect to phonology and / or morphology and / or semantics. Here a new solution, first proposed by Albrecht Greule in 2014 can be corroborated taking also the geological formations of the surroundings of Merseburg into account. Greule connected the first part of the compound name Merse- with names of lakes and islands in Scandinavia. Together with a Swedish dialectal term for ‘heap of stones’ these names point to several terms with the structure Proto-Germ. *mVrs/zV- ‘(having) stone(s)/pebble(s)/rock(s)’ (originally ‘the crushed one’ vel sim.). North of the city of Merseburg we find on the left bank of the river Saale – below thick layers of mud, which might not be older then the Middle-Ages – an area of about 500 × 3000 m characterized exactly by rock and pebbles. Thus Merseburg might have been the ‘castle / town at the area with rocks / stones / pebbles’ – or, more pointedly: the ‘castle on the rocks’.

Abstract:
The term distinctive signs refers to trademarks, geographical Indications and appellations of Origin, Domain and other Names. EU law only provides rules on trademarks and geographical indications. All other characteristics and distinctive signs are subject to the national legislation. European trademark law and harmonized national trademark law in principle permit the registration of any sign as a trademark. In particular, all kinds of words, including personal names have the general capacity to constitute a trademark. The protection afforded by registration is however dependent on whether the concrete sign shows distinctiveness to which products or services it relates and alludes to its business origins. General terms or descriptive terms do not always provide sufficient distinctiveness to a sign. The combined use however of those general terms with descriptive terms can indeed be registered because they constitute a distinguishable identity. Artistic terms contrarily are mostly advantageous. Upon registration of a certain sign the owner obtains an exclusive right and as proprietor is the only one permitted to use said sign for labelling his / her products or services with the terms provided at registration. Trademark law stipulates use of a sign not only in relation to its respective product / services but also in relation to similar products / services where there is a likelihood of confusion to the consumer. Famous trademarks are in addition protected from measures of image transfers. The owner of the trademark can take actions against both the actual usage of identical signs or signs which induse confusion, and / or to achieve removal of a violating sign which is itself registered as a trademark. It is still possible to use one’s own name in business operations although a third party has previously registered it as a trademark or as a part of a trademark, as long as it is only used within reasonable habits of trade so that the identity or similarity will not be misused to gain the reputation of said third party’s trademark. It is possible to use third party trademarks to for the purpose of identifying or referring to goods or services as those of the proprietor of that trade mark, in particular, where the use of that trade mark is necessary to indicate the intended purpose of a product or service, in particular as accessories or spare parts.

Because this river was a borderline between Germanic and Slavonic tribes the possibilities of Slavic origin are discussed and finally negated. The historical forms documented since more than thousand years allow the reconstruction of an already Germanic or Old Low German name *Marsiburg and later Mersiburg with the meaning ‘high and secure place’. Starting from the analysis of numerous similar place names, on the one hand, and, on the other, of a large volume of documentation on archaeological sites and local traditions, this study explains the name of the most important megalithic monument on the Iberian Peninsula, [Cueva de] Menga (Antequera, province of Malaga). The name is based on an anthroponym which denoted a mythical female creature, to whom the Castilian settlers that had arrived in the late Middle Ages attributed the construction of dolmens. This constitutes an onomastic mechanism based on popular traditions spread over large parts of the Iberian Peninsula, and even over large parts of Europe.

In the last years two millennia were celebrated in Merseburg: In 1013 the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Henry II, met there with the King of Poland, Bolesław Chrobry, and in 1015 the Merseburg cathedral was consecrated. Thus it is not surprising that linguists, too, took again some interest in the town and the still unclear etymology of its name. The first was Christian Zschieschang, showing in two papers the potential relevance of the medieval etymology ‘city/castle of (the war-god) Mars’, the second was Karlheinz Hengst, proposing the name might mean ‘city / castle with a good overview (over the surroundings)’ and the last one to join was Harald Bichlmeier arguing (based on an idea by Albrecht Greule) for a ‘castle/town at the area with rocks / stones / pebbles’.

Surnames can be analyzed from three perspectives: as a linguistic sign (M+o+z+a+r+t), as a feature related to an individual (Leopold Mozart), or as a feature of a group (Leopold, Wolfgang, Konstanze Mozart). In this article, juridical regulations concerning these three aspects are discussed with special focus on the linguistic perspective. It is shown in which way juridical regulations influence the identification function of names and how they can lead to the impoverishment or the extension of a language’s surname inventory. From a linguist’s viewpoint, it is advisable to relax the strict juridical regulations relating to the use of personal names. Introducing personal numbers would facilitate this process.

In the legal systems of the Romanic legal family four major types of attribution of the child’s name may be distinguished: 1) obligatory transmission of father’s name; 2) choice between father’s or mother’s name; 3) obligatory transmission of father’s and mother’s name; 4) choice between father’s name, mother’s name or father’s and mother’s name. There is a strong tendency towards a more liberal approach. Therefore, the fourth type is gaining importance. In the Romanic legal systems marriage has no influence on the legal name of the spouses. They keep their own name during the marriage. But most legal systems accept that the spouses have the right to use each other’s name.

This article deals with problems related to the tradition of name evidences in written documents. Those written sources functioning as mediating medium for the variant types of the names, have a specific context of origin and tradition, which makes its use for the etymological derivation problematic. Taking the example of the written evidences cited in the German Book of Water Names edited by Albrecht Greule for the rivers Milde, Biese and Aland, the importance of a source-critical analysis for every single document used there shall be shown. British personal names from a linguistic perspective. ‒ On the Continent, names have been heavily regulated since the 19th century. In Great Britain, on the other hand, acquiring and changing a name are governed by custom rather than law, although some legal rules exist for the names of legal entities. In its first part, this article considers how natural persons acquire (1.1.) and change (1.2.) their name in Great Britain. It also discusses three – potentially conflicting – interests that might be affected by a change of name, i.e. the interests of the public and in particular the state; the interests of other persons bearing the same name; and the interests of parents in the case of a minor child’s change of name (1.3.). In its second part, the article deals with the names of legal entities (2.). It concludes with a short resumé.

I present the essentials of my thinking about names over the last 20 years, stimulated mainly from a historical linguistic point of view to think about the question of how expressions which are not names etymologically come to be used as names. The resultant theoretical approach, The Pragmatic Theory of Properhood (TPTP), is intended to be valid for names in all categories: place-names, personal names, business names, and so on. As regards the law, personal names and business names form the most interesting categories, but I draw most of my examples from the categories of names applying to persons. I set out what seem from the perspective of TPTP to be the most important linguistic questions about the nature of names that may have legal implications, and the answers to which may vary in different jurisdictions. These questions are framed with personal names in mind, but some may apply also in the case of businesses.

The article discusses the linguistic and pragmatic features of personal names in the Russian language that cause name-bearers to have problems with documents (name identity) and create conflict situation in the legal field. The main reason is the fact that a personal name in Russian has a large number of morphological and orthographic variants. Variant forms can occur with declension of Russian and foreign surnames, as well as through transliteration from Cyrillic to Latin. The article gives examples of unusual personal names that have emerged in the last decade and discusses their conformity / non-conformity with the norm. A conclusion is made regarding the expansion of boundaries of onomastic norm in the modern Russian language and the fruitfulness of interdisciplinary contacts between linguists and lawyers in dealing with conflict situations related to proper names.

The investigation of the Russian name law shows that it has a marked continental European approach. Acquisition and name changes of a natural person are governed by strict regulations, nevertheless, the legislation grants a limited freedom of choice. Names for natural persons in Russia continue to fullfill important identification and individualization functions. A name gives linguistic recognition to a person, through which they are distinguished from other people. It makes the name-bearer clearly responsible, and socially and legally tangible. The identification function serves both the interests of the state and the general public. The legal name is entered into the register of births, upon the birth certificate and subsequent personal papers. Furthermore, the name is personally legally valid, so that it serves the individualization function for the name-bearer, who has an interest in being able to be so distinguished by name from others.

The article aims to give an overview over the author’s work on the oldest layers of toponyms and hydronyms in Central Europe (including a short detour to Italy). In the course of almost one decade some three dozen names were treated. More often than not, the scientific standards of modern Indo-European linguistics were applied for the first time in etymologizing these names. In some cases arguments for new etymologies could be brought forward, in many cases more precise etymologies could be offered – but in some cases it also had to be stated that the formerly given ‘one and only’ etymological solution had to be discarded of in favour of an array of (sometimes four, five or even more) viable solutions. But in spite of such (to some readers maybe discouraging) results, it should become clear that only this modern way of Indo-European linguistics will lead to results so reliable that further research can be based on them. In the second part of the paper several tables will give a compact overview comparing old solutions and new findings concerning a number of river-names.

Ein Beitrag zur Theorie und Praxis der literarischen Onomastik“ (Nicolaisen 2000). Vier Aufsätze hat Wilhelm F.H. Nicolaisen in unserer Zeitschrift veröffentlicht: „Über Namen in der Literatur“ (Nicolaisen 1980a), „Zur Namenforschung in den USA“ (Nicolaisen 1980b), „Die Welt der Namen“ (Nicolaisen 1998) und „Ortsnamen als Zeugnisse der Siedlungsgeschichte Nord-Ost-Schottlands“ (Nicolaisen 2002). Wilhelm F.H. Nicolaisen war einer der allerersten, der Mitglied der 1991 gegründeten Gesellschaft für Namenforschung wurde und sich immer für sie interessiert und engagiert hat. Der Arbeitsstelle an der Universität Leipzig schenkte er alle seine Veröffentlichungen. Wir haben viele Gründe, Bill Nicolaisen in dankbarer Erinnerung zu behalten!

Abstract:
Using examples taken from historical name inventories, focusing on Portugal and France, this paper delineates mechanisms of name-giving (or better naming) as a result of administrative practice without any legal basis. An analysis by social classes (middle and under classes, aristocracy, foundlings, among others) demonstrate significant differences.
