Full textThis dissertation contains three essays that estimate the effects of self-confidence on economic agents’ decisions. An experimental approach is used for those contributions. This work is interested in three topics concerning behavioral labor economics: moonlighting, job search and teamwork. The first chapter investigates the existence of optimism biases in the context of irregular work. This essay proposes a measure of optimism biases through a decision process. The results show that the way the monitoring policy is announced deeply affects the perception of the risk at stake: the designation of the number of randomly controlled agents tends to foster the cheats’ optimism. The second chapter studies how the uncertainty on ability and self-esteem of job-seekers affect their search behaviors. The results show that on average the low ability agents’ decisions are not affected by the uncertainty about their ability, whereas the high ability agents tend to decrease their reservation wage and thus to stop their search faster. However, the low ability agents’ decisions are not homogeneous: the higher the worker’s self-esteem is, the higher his reservation wage is. The third chapter aims at estimating how workers’ self-image biases affect effort choices and team production. The results show that the workers who overestimate (underestimate) their ability provide higher (lower) effort levels than the unbiased. The results also reveal that the agents benefit from their partner’s confidence, but not from their own bias. Conversely, the presence of underconfident agents in the team damages the welfare of both teammates

Full textMany types of strategic decisions result in recurring, systematic errors. Extant theories of organizations are insufficient to account for this phenomenon. Behavioral Strategy suggests that an explanation may be found in the psychology of decision makers, and particularly in their cognitive biases. This, however, calls for a link between individual-level cognition and affects, and organization-level choices. We propose “Strategic Choice Routines” as a middle level of analysis to bridge this gap, and identify three broad types of Strategic Choice Routines. This leads us to formulate hypotheses on how Strategic Choice Routines can be modified to minimize strategic errors. We illustrate these hypotheses through case studies; test some of them quantitatively; and analyze preferences that drive their adoption by executives. Finally, we discuss theoretical and managerial implications

Full textEverything we do is guided by value. In brief, the value we assign to something summarizes the impact we thinkitwill have on our lives. The term value can be used to assess virtually anything. Value is goal-dependent: e.g., value for water is different than value for a soft bed. Value is context-dependent: e.g., value for a hammer is different when building versus fishing. Value is subjective: e.g., a work of art might be treasure to some, garbage to others. Even when taking all this into account, however, the values that we express for particular options are not always consistent. We do not always choose according to our preferences, as derived byassessing options individually. Under current theories, such preference reversals are interpretedas errors that arise from unreliable signaling within the brain. We alternatively propose that people can change their mind after reassessing the value of options while pondering the decision. So, why do we carefully ponder some decisions, but not others? We develop a computational model of the metacognitive control of decisions, where we assume that the amount of cognitive resources deployed is controlled by an effort-confidence tradeoff. Importantly, the anticipated benefit of allocating resources varies according to difficulty and importance. The model predicts choices, choice confidence, mental effort, and preference change, in a critically different manner from current models. We compare and test these predictions in a systematic manner, using a dedicated behavioral paradigm. Our results provide a mechanistic link between effort, confidence, and preference reversals, in a way that has not previously been considered

Full textMetacognition and especially metacognitive judgments have been largely studied within separate cognitive fields such as episodic memory (metamemory) or visual perception (metaperception). Despite this historical tradition of evaluating metacognition in a disparate manner, similarities in methodological and theoretical frameworks can be observed and recent work compares metacognitive judgements across a variety of tasks (first-order task), proposing the idea that metacognition could be domain-general. This thesis focuses on the cue-utilization view stemming from the metamemory literature to explore the breadth of metacognition across two correlational and three experimental studies. In particular, we investigated whether people use a common resource in their metacognitive judgements across different types of first-order tasks and whether this resource is also shared across different metacognitive judgements. Moreover, we focused on the metacognitive cue of fluency as a potential domain-general cue in the formation of metacognitive judgements. Overall, our results suggest that whereas prospective judgements are domain-specific, retrospective judgements can be supported by a domain-general resource. The study of the involvement of fluency suggests differing influence of this cue on both the type of first-order task and the type of metacognition judgement. This suggests that fluency effects are less homogeneous than previously thought. In light of these results, we propose a novel approach of metacognitive judgment formation in order to have a more unified view of metacognitive research. Finally, we suggest implications for both research on recognition memory and neuropsychological and psychiatric research

Full textThis thesis introduces the results of experiments testing specific game mechanics to help the players to develop reflective decision making. Our approach is, firstly, to bias the players’ judgment. Then, through the bias awareness, we want to help them to have a better understanding about their judgment processes. To do this, we try to place the player in an overconfident state while playing video games. To measure their behavior, the players must use an integrated tool to the game progression: a bet system through which they assess on their confidence in their chances of success. Two games were developed to measure the influence of the biases on the confidence of the player: one focusing on the effect of anchoring and confirmation biases, another one on the hard / easy effect

Full textSchizophrenia is accompanied by a wide range of cognitive difficulties which highly limit social and professional integration of patients suffering from it. Metamemory can be referred as knowledge about its own knowledge. The aim of this thesis was to explore theories and methods of metamemory which could be relevant in improving patients’ memory performances. In a study devoted to study personal control over memory reporting, our results have shown that patients can achieve comparable memory performances as control subjects while guided through metamemory processes (monitoring and control), where as their performance were spontaneously deficient. Our pilot study exploring the mnemonic potential of metamemory judgment of learning generated promising results. This strategy seems to be more efficient than the most commonly implemented but not very efficient learning strategy, relearning of to be learned items. Our results allow us to presume the utility of metamemory to enhance memory performances in schizophrenia

Despite the fact that trust between agents is a fundamental aspect for the stabilization of the relationship, the uncertainty on the behavior of the other part is frequent, and it may generate a perception of trust violation between them. Given this fact, the understanding of the variables that may influence the effects of a trust violation perception is more and more relevant on the studies about trust. From the many elements researched on the literature to mediate the effects of a trust violation perception, the objective of this study is to investigate the effect that the type of a previous relationship between the agents may exert on the cognitive and behavioral reactions of them, in situations where there is uncertainty about the cooperative behavior of the other part. Specifically, the goal for this study is to compare the effects that different types of relationship between the agents – based on calculative or relational trust – exert on the two dimensions of reaction to a negative event on the relationship. On the cognitive dimension, we compared the effects that different types of previous relationship between them exert on the level of trust attributed to the counterpart, after a negative event between them. On the behavioral dimension, we compared the effects that different types of previous relationship between the agents exert on the risk position taken by them, after an undesirable event. To achieve this goal, we run an experiment to test in a controlled environment the reaction of the agents to a negative result on an interaction, simulating two different contexts of relationship between them. The results of the experiment showed that, compared to relationships of calculative basis, the ones of relational basis are more resistant to external disturbs, given that they generate a more positive causal attribution and higher level of perceived trustworthiness on the other part after a negative event between the agents. Moreover, this trustworthiness perceived positively influences the risk position taken by the agents after a negative event, in a way that higher risks are taken in relationships of relational trust basis. Finally, the results also reinforce that the higher is risk position taken by a agent, the higher is the cooperative level of his or her partner.
