Abstract:
Abstractthis paper, an energy consumption model is developed and exploited to evaluate the electrical energy consumption of ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) systems. We develop the energy consumption models and our comparative study, on the one hand, for a system based single-input singleoutput (SISO) configuration and a multiple-input single-output (MISO) and, on the other hand, for a time reversal TR-MISO configuration and for MISO alone configuration. We consider an indoor propagation environment based on the 802.15.4a channel model. The results show very different behaviors depending on the propagation conditions, the number of antennas used, or on the number of transmitted symbols. Using such a model, a radiofrequency designer can obtain significant inputs to optimally select an adequate configuration to design an adaptive energyaware UWB-IR system.

Abstract:
Abstract. Typical specular meteor radars (SMRs) use one transmitting antenna and at least a five-antenna interferometric configuration on reception to study the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. The interferometric configuration allows the measurement of the angle-of-arrival (AOA) of the detected meteor echoes, which in turn is needed to derive atmospheric parameters (e.g., mean winds, momentum fluxes, temperatures, and neutral densities). Recently, we have shown that coherent MIMO configurations in atmospheric radars, i.e., multiple input (transmitters) and multiple output (receivers), with proper diversity in transmission can be used to enhance interferometric atmospheric and ionospheric observations. In this study we present novel SMR systems using multiple transmitters in interferometric configuration, each of them employing orthogonal pseudorandom coded transmitted sequences. After proper decoding, the angle of departure (AOD) of the detected meteor echoes with respect to the transmitter site are obtained at each receiving antenna. We present successful bistatic implementations of (1) five transmitters and one receiver using coded continuous wave (CW) (MISO-CW), and (2) five transmitters and five receivers using coded CW (MIMO-CW). The latter system allows simultaneous independent observations of the specular meteor trails with respect to the transmitter (AOD) and with respect to the receiver (AOA). The quality of the obtained results is evaluated in terms of the resulting mean winds, the number of detections and the daily diffusion trail vs. altitude behavior. We show that the proposed configurations are good alternatives to explore the MLT region. When combined with multi-static approaches, they can increase the number of meteor detections, thereby improving the quality of atmospheric estimates and allowing the measurement of new atmospheric parameters (e.g., horizontal divergence, vorticity), The use of multiple collocated transmitters for interferometric AOD determination makes building a multi-static radar network easier logistically, as only one receiver per receiving site antenna is sufficient.

Abstract:
Abstract. Precise cable drive is an elegant transmission mode and has many advantages of high efficiency, flexible layout, besides being lightweight. Since the common layout, Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) spur gear configuration, suffers from low torque-to-weight ratio and loose structure, this paper proposes a novel transmission configuration with large torque-to-weight and compact size. It combines the advantages of Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) configuration and bevel gear configuration. The design methods and transmission kinematics of the novel configuration are studied. An analytical model is developed for characterizing the transmission backlash of the proposed configuration, which is derived by simultaneous satisfying system's constitutive relation, equilibrium, and geometric constraints. Parametric sensitivities are carried out to investigate the influence of the major design parameter on the transmission characteristics. At last, a prototype of MISO with bevel gear configuration cable drive mechanism (MBCDM) is built, with which a series of experiments are carried out. This mechanism could achieve maximum output torque of 3.3 Nm with considerable toque-to-weight ratio of 9.649 Nm kg−1. The experimental results show that the transmission backlash and ripple torque are dominant nonlinear effects in the MBCDM system. It shows that the ripple torque is connected with the rotational displacement, with the highest peak at 694.3 cycle rad−1 and the amplitude of 24.67 µrad. The transmission backlash experimental results are in good agreement with simulation ones, with the error level of 4.14 %.

This paper presents a comparative experimental-analytical study on the performance of Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) and Single-Input Multi-Output (SIMO) techniques to identify the modal properties of a cantilever beam. A 2-D laser interferometry was employed to perform the SIMO modal test, while for the MISO test configuration, a conventional accelerometer was used to measure the response of the structure. Comparing the experimentally-measured natural frequencies with those calculated by the FEM model, a maximum difference of 4% between natural frequencies was observed. The repeatability of both techniques is also investigated in this paper and it is shown that the difference between modal properties identified under different operators is less than 0.5% for both the MISO and SIMO techniques.

Abstract:
A new multiple-input single-output-(MISO-)-type multifunction voltage-mode universal biquadratic filter employing single voltage differencing differential input buffered amplifier (VD-DIBA), two capacitors, and one resistor are proposed. The proposed structure can realize second-order low pass, high pass, band pass, band stop, and all pass filter responses without altering the circuit topology. The proposed new filter configuration also provides the following advantageous features, not available simultaneously in any of the single active device /element-based universal biquad in realizing all the five filter functions known earlier so far: (i) no requirement of any passive component(s) matching condition or inversion of input signal(s), (ii) independent electronic control of angular frequency () and bandwidth (BW), and (iii) low active and passive sensitivities. SPICE simulation results have been included using 0.35 µm TSMC technology to confirm the validity of the proposed new universal biquadratic filter configuration.

In today’s modern telecommunications systems, makes the number of studies and development of multiple antennas and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve high reliability and low complexity. One attractive approach to improve that performance is using technique transmit diversity which is spacetime block coding and receiver diversity i.e. zero forcing EVCM (ZF EVCM). Although some earlier MIMO standards were develop some space-time codes like (O-STBC)and (Q-OSTBC) to provide high reliability but they are limited able to achieve orthogonality. In this research will be proposed a MIMO system scheme which is an improvement of QOSTBC that used a transmission diversity technique. This improvement from QOSTBC is Twice QOSTBC uses a provision in two codeword matrices to be sent are arranged diagonally so as to have higher levels of orthogonality. In this case Twice QOSTBC highly structured (4x1) can be replaced as an equivalent EVCM channel H. The proposed Twice-QOSTBC’s results outperform other QOSTBC techniques with a difference around 3 dB for single-input multi-input (MISO) input configuration at 10-6 BER and receiver ZF EVCM has a very similar structure as the code matrix S of the underlying Twice QSTBC which can eliminates the system complexity.

Abstract:
In this paper, we describe an experimental testbed designed to evaluate indoor visible light communications (VLC) in realistic scenarios. The system is based on a mockup where the location and orientation of the optical receiver can be modified with precision for a static configuration of walls and ceiling lamp arrangements. The system utilizes a timing synchronization method, which is based on evaluating the training sequence periods used for channel response estimation, which enables robust frame synchronization. In addition, an adaptive rate orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme is used to assess the VLC performance throughout the receiver plane emulating a real communication. The preliminary results obtained with this prototype, considering a multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, demonstrate that reflection on walls yields a significant increase in data rates, which can be additionally improved if appropriate orientation of the receiver is implemented. However, vertical orientation upward of the optical receiver still constitutes a simple solution but efficient enough. Moreover, a good agreement between simulation and experimental results is observed, which confirms the suitability of the mockup as an experimental testbed for practical evaluation of indoor VLC systems, where system performance for different lamp arrangements and receiver designs, including multi-user communications, can be studied.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The broad topic of the presented Ph.D. thesis consists in the contribution to the study of Radar imaging systems at millimeter-wave and more specifically to the antennas and signal processing. These works have been carried out during a partnership between Canon Research Center France and IETR. A first study on focusing antennas, particularly on Fresnel lens antennas, thanks to a technological process to manufacture inhomogeneous materials, has allowed to improve the efficiency and the frequency bandwidth. The antenna has been mounted on a rotary system to image a real outdoor scene. Then, the study has been focused on the realization of a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) configuration notably using a 4 × 1 passive compressive device allowing to reduce, by compression, the number of radiofrequency (RF) chains. The chains are decompressed by post-processing. The device, used at the transmitting part, is associated with a scanner that synthetizes a receiving array of antennas. This configuration allows to generate a large virtual array, to improve the azimutal resolution of the system while maintaining acceptable the number of RF chains. This configuration has been used to image a scene in an anechoid chamber to validate the concept. To further improve the spatial resolution of the system for a given number of RF chains, the study of high resolution algorithms, or spectral estimation methods, are used to image scenes in near field and wide-band configurations. The combination of MIMO configurations, the passive compressive device and the spectral estimation methods have allowed to drastically improve the spatial resolution of the radar imaging system while limiting the number of RF chains

This work investigates new gate drive power supply configurations and a novel multi-steppackaging concept in order to improve the performance of series-connected SiC-MOSFETs. The new gate drive configurations are proposed in order to reduce noise currents that circulate in the control part of the electrical system. Furthermore, a new gate drive power supply is proposed to increase the dv/dt of the switching cell. These improvements, i.e., noise current reduction and dv/dt boosting, are achieved by modifying the impedance of the gate drive circuitry. The novel multi-step packaging concept is proposed in order to improve the voltage sharing performance. The proposed package geometry considers optimal dielectric isolation for each device leading to a multi-step geometry. It has a significant impact on the parasitic capacitances introduced by the packaging structure that are responsible for voltageunbalances. The new gate driver configurations and the proposed multi-step packaging concepts are introduced and analysed thanks to equivalent models and time domain simulations. Then, experimental set-ups are performed to confirm that the proposed concepts are better than traditional ones in terms of voltage balancing, switching speed and conducted EMI reduction

Abstract:
In this thesis, we are interested on the performances optimization of multimedia transmissions systems with an original contribution combining RF circuits' imperfections presented by the power amplifier (PA) nonlinearities and the transmission channel distortions. The studied system uses the OFDM technique which is the most widespread multicarrier modulation in recent radio communications systems. However, its major drawback is the high PAPR value, which degrades the transmission quality due to the PA nonlinearities. To reduce the PAPR, we first propose to improve the TR method in terms of convergence speed and PAPR reduction, by studying several optimization algorithms. We show that the conjugate gradient algorithm provides the best performance while respecting the frequency specifica-tions of the IEEE 802.11a standard. Thereafter, TR method has been evaluated experimentally in the presence of a commercial PA (SZP-2026Z) and using a measurement bench. It is shown that the TR method improves the quality of service (QoS), with 18% reduction in PA power consumption. The experimental study has resulted to choosing a realistic PA model consider-ing memory effects. This PA model has been integrated into a SISO simulation chain includ-ing also a realistic channel model. This chain is used to evaluate the TR method performances under realistic transmission conditions. Finally, we propose to apply the TR method in a closed-loop MIMO-OFDM chain dedicated to the transmission of scalable multimedia con-tent in a realistic context with the IEEE 802.1n standard. This study presents a new contribu-tion of the TR method evaluation to improve the visual quality of the JPWL transmitted imag-es, considering in the same time the multimedia content, the PA nonlinearity and the channel transmission distortions

Abstract:
The simulation has become an indispensable phase for conception of parallel processing systems, and enables to avoid construction of expensive prototypes. In this paper, a parallel process-oriented simulator written in OCCAM language has been developed. Our objective is to conceive a simulator adapted to a network of transputers for prototyping parallel processing systems by connecting directly the serial transputer channels. As a simulation example, a parallel processor system (coprocessor) based on hierarchical structure : master-slave has been realized at the processor-memory-switch level. The performance analysis is obtained via two queuing models : the former as independent M/M/1 systems and the latter as a M/M/s system. The experimental performance is measured respectively based on the independent tasks and the sequential tasks. The comparison of analytic and experimental results enables us to constate the advantage and limit of the coprocessor and to encourage us to its implementation

Abstract:
From the hygienic and medical point of view, this thesis analyses the transformation of the urban space that took place in the city of Fortaleza - Capital of Ceará State (Brazil) - since mid XIX Century. The occurred urban transformation is comprised in an international context of the hegemony of the medical discourse that preached city's hygiene and sanitation. These ideas played a fundamental role in the process of formation and organisation of the urban space; in order to understand and explain the constellation of ideas and practices, it was necessary to study the role of the doctor in the design of a new way of thinking the city from the hygiene and health perspective, in addition to its application and adaptation to the European hygienic and urbanisation patterns - notably the French ones -, listing the State reactive and preventive actions during droughts and epidemics; the preventive policies against illness and campaign against epidemics. Geography contributed to the understanding of the role of ideas and of the impact of changes in the mentality for the creation of new territorial layouts and geographical landscapes. The dissemination of medical theories amongst the population and public authorities had significant impact in the organisation of Brazilian cities

Venkata Satya Siva Srikanth, Vadali. "Unique Surface Modifications on Diamond Thin Films." In Engineering Applications of Diamond. IntechOpen, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.98186.

Full text
Abstract:
Diamond thin films are touted to be excellent in surface-sensitive sensing, electro-mechanical systems, and electrochemical applications. However, these applications often entail patterned active surfaces and subtle chemical surface modifications. But due to diamond’s intrinsic hardness and chemical inertness, surface patterning (using micro-machining and ion etching) and chemical surface modifications, respectively, are very difficult. In the case of surface patterning, it is even more challenging to obtain patterns during synthesis. In this chapter, the direct patterning of sub-wavelength features on diamond thin film surface using a femtosecond laser, rapid thermal annealing as a means to prepare the diamond thin film surface as an efficient direct charge transfer SERS substrate (in metal/insulator/semiconductor (MIS) configuration), and implantation of 14N+ ions into the surface and sub-surface regions for enhancing the electrical conductivity of diamond thin film to a certain depth (in MIS configuration) will be discussed encompassing the processing strategies and different post-processing characteristics.

This chapter analyzes the signifying potential of gambling and casino culture as a seminal feature of James Bond-ness and the 007-universe. It argues that gambling and casinos, both of which are updated with every new outing of James Bond, have important cultural, political and economic ramifications. In particular, the chapter asks how and what casino gambling signifies as it is updated in Skyfall (2012), in terms of the film’s mise-en-scène as well as its geopolitical configuration as a colonizing industry in a global economy that is increasingly dependent on various forms of gambling. Finally, the chapter connects various aspects of what has been referred to as “cinematic revisionism” to the politics and economics of neoliberalization, 007, and global casino culture.

Abstract:
This chapter examines chronic pain. Pain starts as a symptom—associated, for example, with arthritis or neuropathy—and, for one in five Americans, this symptom becomes “chronic,” that is, it lasts for weeks, or months, or even years. Chronic pain has its own reliable neurobiology and its own brain activation signature—although it cannot be localized in any specific “pain area” like other sensory perceptions, such as smell or sight. Still, pain changes the brain’s structure, its neuronal configurations. Moreover, pain’s significance in a person’s life is highly individualized. The experience of chronic pain can be altered by mood, sleep quality, distraction, suggestion, or even anticipation of new pain. This implies that pain may be exacerbated by social conditions—by violence, by anxiety. Living in poverty, for example, increases the odds of living with chronic pain. Although pain is real, it is still doubted and disputed. In the legal system, it is the subject of arguments over payment for disability claims and personal injury suits. The lack of an objective measure of pain means that some who might deserve compensation miss out because they cannot “prove” their discomfort. Assessing and treating pain, recognizing the pain of others, coping with its presence, and limiting its ruinous effects without misusing opioids or taking one’s own life remain central tests of people’s empathy and their efforts to promote health.

Abstract:
Organizations are increasingly turning to enterprise portals to support knowledge work. Portal deployment can be intradepartmental across several business units in one organization or even inter-organizational. Currently in the industry, most of these portals are purchased solutions (e.g., collaboration and smart enterprise suites) and many of these purchasing and selection decisions are primarily driven by the interest of a small group of stakeholders with strong influence from IT vendors. The true requirements for the portal as well as the strategy for its medium- to long-term phased deployment are, in general, poorly addressed. This, together with other reasons, has lead to many failures or to a low adoption rate of the enterprise portal by staff at various levels of an organization. Common problems that hinder portal adoption include lack of an overall governance model, mis-alignment with business processes, poor or non-existent content management (process, tools, and governance), and technical problems associated with the development and configuration of portlets. This article focuses on one critical issue that directly influences the success of an enterprise portal deployment, namely the correct elicitation of user requirements (which in turn lead to the chosen portal’s features and to the style of the portal interface). Taking into consideration the advancement and landscape of commercial portal vendors in the market, this article discusses a bottom-up approach to the identification of high-level drivers for portal usages for its users.

Abstract:
The achievements of modern computational chemistry are astounding. It is reasonable today to handle billions of configurations, and to achieve chemical accuracy, kilocalories say, in calculating binding energies and geometries, in ground and transition states of reasonably complex molecules. There is no question that the enterprise of computational theoretical chemistry is successful. Now Lionel Salem and I grew up and developed scientifically in the climate of the very same computer which made all this possible. Russ Pitzer taught me to punch cards; I still miss the sound of the key punch. The extended Hückel method, which several of us developed in the Lipscomb group, would have been impossible without modern computers. But I took a different turn, moving from being a calculator in the framework of semiempirical theory, to being an explainer, the builder of simple molecular orbital models. I was and am still doing calculations, but my abiding interest is in the construction of explanations. And also in thinking up moderately unreasonable things for experimentalists to try. In existing as a scientist, meaning that my work was of continuing interest to other chemists, I was helped in that I moved into whatever part of chemistry I did, just a little ahead of the heavy guns of computational chemistry. So I switched from organic to inorganic molecules just when organic molecules became reasonably calculable. Recently I’ve been less fortunate, for when I moved to solids and surfaces I came back into heavy fire—physicists had been doing calculations on these materials for a long time. And they were (are) hardly likely to believe that one-electron calculations and a chemical viewpoint are of value. I want to make some observations on computational quantum chemistry, perforce influenced by my prejudices. Given the advances in the field, any molecule I can calculate (without geometrical optimization), with the simplest extended Hückel approximation, can be done so much better by most computational chemists. So why don’t I feel threatened; why is there a role for people of my ilk? Or for Lionel. Actually, I do feel threatened and bypassed! But that’s just an emotional reaction, and my aging figures in it.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas turbine is a complex system operating in non-stationary operation conditions for which traditional model-based modelling approaches have poor generalization capabilities. To address this, an investigation of a novel data driven neural networks based model approach for a three-spool aero-derivative gas turbine engine (ADGTE) for power generation during its loading and unloading conditions is reported in this paper. For this purpose, a non-linear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX) is used to develop this model in MATLAB environment using operational closed-loop data collected from Siemens (SGT-A65) ADGTE. Inspired by the way biological neural networks process information and by their structure which changes depending on their function, multiple-input single-output (MISO) NARX models with different configurations were used to represent each of the ADGTE output parameters with the same input parameters. First, data preprocessing and estimation of the order of these MISO models were performed. Next, a computer program code was developed to perform a comparative study and to select the best NARX model configuration, which can represent the system dynamics. Usage of a single neural network to represent each of the system output parameters may not be able to provide an accurate prediction for unseen data and as a consequence, provides poor generalization. To overcome this problem, an ensemble of MISO NARX models is used to represent each output parameter. The major challenge of the ensemble generation is to decide how to combine results produced by the ensemble’s components. In this paper, a novel hybrid dynamic weighting method (HDWM) is proposed. The verification of this method was performed by comparing its performance with three of the most popular basic methods for ensemble integration: basic ensemble method (BEM), median rule and dynamic weighting method (DWM). Finally, the generated ensembles of MISO NARX models for each output parameter were evaluated using unseen data (testing data). The simulation results based on datasets consisting for experimental data as well as data provided by Siemens high fidelity thermodynamic transient simulation program show improvement in accuracy and robustness by using the proposed modelling approach.

Abstract:
To improve transient torque response of an aggressively downsized turbocharged SI engine a series sequential boosting configuration that utilizes an electrically driven supercharger to assist the main turbocharger compressor is controlled in this paper. A frequency separation controller is designed to decouple the dynamics of the multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system. The controller separates the electric supercharger and turbocharger control actions into different frequency bands that are well suited for the characteristics of each device. The controller can be easily implemented with traditional decentralized single input single output (SISO) control loops. Significant improvements to the baseline turbocharger only system in transient boost pressure response are observed both in simulation and in vehicle test results. Transitions between the electric supercharger and turbocharger are smooth, without noticeable disturbances, with good coordination between electric supercharger and wastegate control actions.

Abstract:
This article demonstrates that many general forms of pre-compensators can be included in a Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) plant with a very general state-space description and the augmented plant can be reduced to static output feedback (SOF) form that is required for optimal design. The main contribution lies in solving very cumbersome algebraic matrix equations, for each configuration, to separate the unknown parameters after the optimal static output feedback gain matrix is achieved. Once the designers see that such configurations with chosen pre-compensators can be dealt with, they would be motivated to consider a suitable configuration for the specific application and finally achieve low cost controllers that are simple to implement and require low computational power.
