Abstract:
Abstractthis paper, an energy consumption model is developed and exploited to evaluate the electrical energy consumption of ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) systems. We develop the energy consumption models and our comparative study, on the one hand, for a system based single-input singleoutput (SISO) configuration and a multiple-input single-output (MISO) and, on the other hand, for a time reversal TR-MISO configuration and for MISO alone configuration. We consider an indoor propagation environment based on the 802.15.4a channel model. The results show very different behaviors depending on the propagation conditions, the number of antennas used, or on the number of transmitted symbols. Using such a model, a radiofrequency designer can obtain significant inputs to optimally select an adequate configuration to design an adaptive energyaware UWB-IR system.

Abstract:
Abstract. Typical specular meteor radars (SMRs) use one transmitting antenna and at least a five-antenna interferometric configuration on reception to study the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. The interferometric configuration allows the measurement of the angle-of-arrival (AOA) of the detected meteor echoes, which in turn is needed to derive atmospheric parameters (e.g., mean winds, momentum fluxes, temperatures, and neutral densities). Recently, we have shown that coherent MIMO configurations in atmospheric radars, i.e., multiple input (transmitters) and multiple output (receivers), with proper diversity in transmission can be used to enhance interferometric atmospheric and ionospheric observations. In this study we present novel SMR systems using multiple transmitters in interferometric configuration, each of them employing orthogonal pseudorandom coded transmitted sequences. After proper decoding, the angle of departure (AOD) of the detected meteor echoes with respect to the transmitter site are obtained at each receiving antenna. We present successful bistatic implementations of (1) five transmitters and one receiver using coded continuous wave (CW) (MISO-CW), and (2) five transmitters and five receivers using coded CW (MIMO-CW). The latter system allows simultaneous independent observations of the specular meteor trails with respect to the transmitter (AOD) and with respect to the receiver (AOA). The quality of the obtained results is evaluated in terms of the resulting mean winds, the number of detections and the daily diffusion trail vs. altitude behavior. We show that the proposed configurations are good alternatives to explore the MLT region. When combined with multi-static approaches, they can increase the number of meteor detections, thereby improving the quality of atmospheric estimates and allowing the measurement of new atmospheric parameters (e.g., horizontal divergence, vorticity), The use of multiple collocated transmitters for interferometric AOD determination makes building a multi-static radar network easier logistically, as only one receiver per receiving site antenna is sufficient.

Abstract. Precise cable drive is an elegant transmission mode and has many advantages of high efficiency, flexible layout, besides being lightweight. Since the common layout, Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) spur gear configuration, suffers from low torque-to-weight ratio and loose structure, this paper proposes a novel transmission configuration with large torque-to-weight and compact size. It combines the advantages of Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) configuration and bevel gear configuration. The design methods and transmission kinematics of the novel configuration are studied. An analytical model is developed for characterizing the transmission backlash of the proposed configuration, which is derived by simultaneous satisfying system's constitutive relation, equilibrium, and geometric constraints. Parametric sensitivities are carried out to investigate the influence of the major design parameter on the transmission characteristics. At last, a prototype of MISO with bevel gear configuration cable drive mechanism (MBCDM) is built, with which a series of experiments are carried out. This mechanism could achieve maximum output torque of 3.3 Nm with considerable toque-to-weight ratio of 9.649 Nm kg−1. The experimental results show that the transmission backlash and ripple torque are dominant nonlinear effects in the MBCDM system. It shows that the ripple torque is connected with the rotational displacement, with the highest peak at 694.3 cycle rad−1 and the amplitude of 24.67 µrad. The transmission backlash experimental results are in good agreement with simulation ones, with the error level of 4.14 %.

This paper presents a comparative experimental-analytical study on the performance of Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) and Single-Input Multi-Output (SIMO) techniques to identify the modal properties of a cantilever beam. A 2-D laser interferometry was employed to perform the SIMO modal test, while for the MISO test configuration, a conventional accelerometer was used to measure the response of the structure. Comparing the experimentally-measured natural frequencies with those calculated by the FEM model, a maximum difference of 4% between natural frequencies was observed. The repeatability of both techniques is also investigated in this paper and it is shown that the difference between modal properties identified under different operators is less than 0.5% for both the MISO and SIMO techniques.

Abstract:
A new multiple-input single-output-(MISO-)-type multifunction voltage-mode universal biquadratic filter employing single voltage differencing differential input buffered amplifier (VD-DIBA), two capacitors, and one resistor are proposed. The proposed structure can realize second-order low pass, high pass, band pass, band stop, and all pass filter responses without altering the circuit topology. The proposed new filter configuration also provides the following advantageous features, not available simultaneously in any of the single active device /element-based universal biquad in realizing all the five filter functions known earlier so far: (i) no requirement of any passive component(s) matching condition or inversion of input signal(s), (ii) independent electronic control of angular frequency () and bandwidth (BW), and (iii) low active and passive sensitivities. SPICE simulation results have been included using 0.35 µm TSMC technology to confirm the validity of the proposed new universal biquadratic filter configuration.

In today’s modern telecommunications systems, makes the number of studies and development of multiple antennas and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve high reliability and low complexity. One attractive approach to improve that performance is using technique transmit diversity which is spacetime block coding and receiver diversity i.e. zero forcing EVCM (ZF EVCM). Although some earlier MIMO standards were develop some space-time codes like (O-STBC)and (Q-OSTBC) to provide high reliability but they are limited able to achieve orthogonality. In this research will be proposed a MIMO system scheme which is an improvement of QOSTBC that used a transmission diversity technique. This improvement from QOSTBC is Twice QOSTBC uses a provision in two codeword matrices to be sent are arranged diagonally so as to have higher levels of orthogonality. In this case Twice QOSTBC highly structured (4x1) can be replaced as an equivalent EVCM channel H. The proposed Twice-QOSTBC’s results outperform other QOSTBC techniques with a difference around 3 dB for single-input multi-input (MISO) input configuration at 10-6 BER and receiver ZF EVCM has a very similar structure as the code matrix S of the underlying Twice QSTBC which can eliminates the system complexity.

Abstract:
In this paper, we describe an experimental testbed designed to evaluate indoor visible light communications (VLC) in realistic scenarios. The system is based on a mockup where the location and orientation of the optical receiver can be modified with precision for a static configuration of walls and ceiling lamp arrangements. The system utilizes a timing synchronization method, which is based on evaluating the training sequence periods used for channel response estimation, which enables robust frame synchronization. In addition, an adaptive rate orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme is used to assess the VLC performance throughout the receiver plane emulating a real communication. The preliminary results obtained with this prototype, considering a multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, demonstrate that reflection on walls yields a significant increase in data rates, which can be additionally improved if appropriate orientation of the receiver is implemented. However, vertical orientation upward of the optical receiver still constitutes a simple solution but efficient enough. Moreover, a good agreement between simulation and experimental results is observed, which confirms the suitability of the mockup as an experimental testbed for practical evaluation of indoor VLC systems, where system performance for different lamp arrangements and receiver designs, including multi-user communications, can be studied.

Abstract:
With the development of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology, the over-the-air (OTA) testing of MIMO capable devices with different sizes needs to be conducted for performance evaluation. The device under test (DUT) should be within a tridimensional test volume created by multiprobe configurations. Thus, determining the maximum size of test volume could be vital to test the DUT of different size and larger test volumes should be adopted to evaluate larger DUTs. All types of probe configurations including the fixed and the flexible probe configurations are investigated in this paper to address this issue. The maximum of test volume size (MTVS) is determined within the given error threshold of spatial correlation for a given probe configuration. Simultaneously, the impact of different probe configurations on MTVS is studied in order to obtain larger MTVSs. Simulation results show that larger MTVSs can be obtained by utilizing the optimal probe configuration with any given 3D channel model for 3D MIMO OTA testing.

VLSI implementation of a configurable power-efficient MIMO detector is proposed to support4×4spatial multiplexing and modulation from QPSK to 64-QAM. A novel tree search algorithm is proposed to enable the detector to provide soft outputs and to be implemented in parallel and pipelined hardware architecture. The frame error rate (FER) of the detector approaches the quasi-optimal sphere decoder, with 0.5-dB degradation. Moreover, the proposed detector can operate at the optimal voltage under different configurations and detect/recover timing error at run time by a novel adaptive voltage scaling technique with double sampling circuitry. The proposed detector, using TSMC 0.18 μm single-poly six-metal CMOS process with a core area of1.17×1.17 mm2, provides fixed throughput of 45 Mbps in 64-QAM configuration, 120 Mbps in 16-QAM configuration, and 60 Mbps in QPSK configuration. The normalized power efficiency of the design for 64-QAM and 16-QAM configurations is 1.56 Mbps/mW and 2.53 Mbps/mW, respectively. Compared with the conservative margin-based design, the proposed design achieves a 48.8% power saving.

Abstract:
MIMO-OFDM (Multiple Input Multiple Output-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) uses multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver side to facilitate high throughput performance without needing additional bandwidth or transmission power. But frequency synchronization, Inter Carrier Interference (ICI) minimization and antenna diversity are the main challenges for MIMO-OFDM wireless technology. In this paper, a MIMO-OFDM hybrid model is designed with proper frequency synchronization and antenna diversity that minimizes ICI with improved signal strength. Using the model a comprehensive analysis in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) performance with respect to Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Bit Rate for different M-ary QAM modulation schemes and different MIMO configurations are presented over Rayleigh fading and AWGN channel. After an extensive analysis, it is found that the propose OFDM scheme shows better Bit Error rate (BER) performance for 64-QAM than any other M-ary QAM modulation schemes and the optimum MIMO configuration for this good quality performance is found to be 3×2 configuration.

As a recently proposed concept, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars exhibit much higher spatial resolution than traditional transmitter based radars because of the synthesized virtual array. In this paper, the problem of minimum redundancy (MR)-MIMO array synthesis is addressed, which seeks to maximize the virtual array aperture of MIMO radars for a given number of transmitting and receiving elements. A hybrid method combining autocorrelation property of cyclic difference sets (CDSs) and global search characteristics of ant colony optimization (ACO) is proposed for a rapid and numerically-effective exploration of MR-MIMO array configurations. Numerical experiments validate the proposed method, showing improvements in convergence rate and computational cost with respect to bare ACO-based search as well as improvements in the generality and configuration variety with respect to the CDS-based method.

Abstract:
Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) transmission and reception has been suggested as a key enabling technology of future cellular systems. To understand different CoMP configurations and to facilitate the configuration selection (and thus determine channel state information (CSI) feedback and data sharing requirements), performance benchmarks are needed to show what performance gains are possible. A unified approach is also needed to enable the cluster of cooperating cells to systematically take care of the transceiver design. To address these needs, the generalized iterative approach (GIA) is proposed as a unified approach for the minimum mean square error (MMSE) transceiver design of general multiple-transmitter multiple-receiver multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems subject to general linear power constraints. Moreover, the optimum decoder covariance optimization approach is proposed for downlink systems. Their optimality and relationships are established and shown numerically. Five CoMP configurations (Joint Processing-Equivalent Uplink, Joint Processing-Equivalent Downlink, Joint Processing-Equivalent Single User, Noncoordinated Multipoint, and Coordinated Beamforming) are studied and compared numerically. Physical insights, performance benchmarks, and some guidelines for CoMP configuration selection are presented.

Abstract:
In this paper, we are concerned on the receiver design and the different imaging possibilities for radar multiple input multiple output (MIMO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The transmission of pseudo-orthogonal waveforms gives many opportunities in reception on how to manage these different signals. We proposed to compare different resolutions and robustness for SAR measurements: single input single output (SISO) and MIMO. Moreover, we developed different SAR processings based on MIMO configuration by using the Stolt interpolation on simulations. On real data, these SAR processing will be adapted for the backprojection processing.

Abstract:
This paper presents a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system for millimeter-wave 5G wireless communication services. The proposed MIMO configuration is composed of four antenna elements, where each antenna possesses an HP-shaped configuration that features simple configuration and excellent performance. The proposed MIMO design can operate at a very wideband of 36.83–40.0 GHz (measured). Furthermore, the proposed MIMO antenna attains a peak gain of 6.5 dB with a maximum element-isolation of −45 dB. Apart from this, the MIMO performance metrics such as envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), diversity gain, and channel capacity (CCL) are analyzed, which demonstrate good characteristics across the operating band. The proposed antenna radiates efficiently with a radiation efficiency of above 80% at the desired frequency band which makes it a potential contender for the upcoming communication applications. The proposed design simulations were performed in the computer simulation technology (CST) software, and measured results reveal good agreement with the simulated one.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system is a technology that has the potential to be developed to increase channel capacity. The increase in channel capacity in the MIMO system is not only determined by the number of antennas, but is determined by the characteristics and arrangement of the antenna concept. This study identifies the effect of circular polarization on the MIMO antenna system on channel capacity. Co-polarization consists of a Left Hand Circular Polarization (LHCP) and Right Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP) configuration, while cross-polarization consists of an RHCP-LHCP configuration. The co-polarization of the antenna with the LHCP configuration results in an estimated channel capacity of 11,578 bps / Hz when it is at the lowest Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) is 5 dB

Abstract:
As a special multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar networking mode, missile-borne forward-looking synthetic aperture radar (MFL-SAR) has many potential applications. This paper describes and analyzes properties of this new configuration. Range history and Doppler history are analyzed and derived using the designed geometric configuration. Then the expressions of range and Doppler resolution are determined based on the validity of two-dimensional (2D) resolution imaging capability. To help to design the proper system and motion parameters of this configuration, key parameters affecting the imaging ability are found out. Due to high velocities and accelerations of both transmitter and receiver, high-order terms in the slant range equation should be kept to reduce the approximation error. The range resolution and Doppler resolution of MFL-SAR are both space-variant and time-variant owing to the complexity of this configuration. The tiny changes of 2D resolution during the synthetic aperture time should be considered when designing the imaging algorithm of MFL-SAR.

Abstract:
This review paper reveals the broadband potential of overhead and underground low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) broadband over power lines (BPL) networks associated with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. The contribution of this review paper is fourfold. First, the unified value decomposition (UVD) modal analysis is introduced. UVD modal analysis is a new technique that unifies eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) and singular value decomposition (SVD) modal analyses achieving the common handling of traditional SISO/BPL and upcoming MIMO/BPL systems. The validity of UVD modal analysis is examined by comparing its simulation results with those of other exact analytical models. Second, based on the proposed UVD modal analysis, the MIMO channels of overhead and underground LV and MV BPL networks (distribution BPL networks) are investigated with regard to their inherent characteristics. Towards that direction, an extended collection of well-validated metrics from the communications literature, such as channel attenuation, average channel gain (ACG), root-mean-square delay spread (RMS-DS), coherence bandwidth (CB), cumulative capacity, capacity complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF), and capacity gain (GC), is first applied in overhead and underground MIMO/LV and MIMO/MV BPL channels and systems. It is found that the results of the aforementioned metrics portfolio depend drastically on the frequency, the power grid type (either overhead or underground, either LV or MV), the MIMO scheme configuration properties, the MTL configuration, the physical properties of the cables used, the end-to-end distance, and the number, the electrical length, and the terminations of the branches encountered along the end-to-end BPL signal propagation. Third, three interesting findings concerning the statistical properties of MIMO channels of distribution BPL networks are demonstrated, namely, (i) the ACG, RMS-DS, and cumulative capacity lognormal distributions; (ii) the correlation between RMS-DS and ACG; and (iii) the correlation between RMS-DS and CB. By fitting the numerical results, unified regression distributions appropriate for MIMO/BPL channels and systems are proposed. These three fundamental properties can play significant role in the evaluation of recently proposed statistical channel models for various BPL systems. Fourth, the potential of transformation of overhead and underground LV/BPL and MV/BPL distribution grids to an alternative solution to fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) technology is first revealed. By examining the capacity characteristics of various MIMO scheme configurations and by comparing these capacity results against SISO ones, a new promising urban backbone network seems to be born in a smart grid (SG) environment.

Abstract:
IEEE 802.11ac is the latest WiFi standard that operates in 5GHz frequency band and promises high data rate than IEEE 802.11n. In this paper, the authors carry out experiments using commercial off-the-shelf equipment in a typical home environment and quantify the gain provided by IEEE 802.11ac compared to IEEE 802.11n. Their experimental results obtained in a typical home environment show that in 5GHz frequency band with a 2x2 MIMO configuration, IEEE 802.11ac provides much higher throughput than IEEE 802.11n. IEEE 802.11ac provides an average throughput gain of 94% and 91% at a distance of 3.6m and 8.5m from the wireless router, respectively. The authors further investigate the gain in average throughput that is provided by IEEE 802.11ac when the transmit antenna diversity on the wireless router is increased from two to three. They note that IEEE 802.11ac with a 3x2 MIMO configuration helps to combat multipath fading effect present in residential home environment and provides higher average throughput than 2x2 MIMO e.g. at a distance of 11m from the wireless router, 3x2 MIMO configuration provides a gain of 15.13% than the 2x2 MIMO configuration. The authors conclude based on their results (obtained via experiments in a typical home environment) that although IEEE 802.11ac wireless routers are more expensive than IEEE 802.11n wireless routers however, high throughput provided by IEEE 802.11ac justifies the high cost associated with its routers.

Abstract:
Hybrid architectures are used in the Millimeter wave (mmWave) Massive MIMO systems, which use a smaller number of RF chains and reduces the power and energy consumption of the mmWave Massive MIMO systems. However, the majority of the hybrid architectures employs the conventional circuit configuration by connecting each of the RF chains with all the transmitting antennas at the base station. As a result, the conventional circuit configuration requires a large number of phase shifters, combiners, and low-end amplifiers. In this paper, we modify the RF circuit configuration by connecting each of the RF chains with some of the transmitting antennas of mmWave Massive MIMO. Furthermore, the hybrid analogue/digital precoders and decoders along with the overall circuit power consumptions are modelled for the modified RF circuit configuration. In addition, we propose the alternating optimization algorithm to enhance the optimal energy efficiency and compute the optimal system parameters of the mmWave Massive MIMO system. The proposed framework provides deeper insights of the optimal system parameters in terms of throughput, consumed power and the corresponding energy efficiency. Finally, the simulation results validate the proposed framework, where it can be seen that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the power and energy consumptions, with a little compromise on the system spectral gain.

Abstract:
Abstract Traditional radio communication has gained significantly from using multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) architecture in the system. Many wireless applications, such as wireless LAN and cellular network, have adopted this technology to improve their system performance. However, the effect of MIMO systems has not been investigated in the case of inductive near field short range communications. The purpose of this paper is to explore a new method for increasing the magnetic communication range using MIMO. Three system models includingMISO, SIMO and MIMO are proposed to characterize the number of transmitters and receivers to the link. These models have helped to extend not only the range but also the communication channel in NFMIC.
