Abstract:
The Confirmation Project research clearly identified the impact of the faith-forming culture of a congregation on youth confirmation. When the congregational ecology is intentional about lifelong and life-wide faith formation, intergenerational relationships become a powerful means of faith transmission. This article explores the role and impact of mentoring in confirmation programs, a practice we found in 57 percent of the 3064 congregations surveyed. Drawing from social science research and building on biblical and theological foundations, we argue that Christian mentoring, a practice of modeling faith, provides mutual benefit for young people and their adult mentors, while also contributing to the spiritual health and relational vitality of congregations. Intergenerational mentoring at its best teaches confirmands, mentors, and congregants that they are not independent Christians, but part of an interdependent body of Christ.

Full text
Abstract:
We can often predict the behavior of those closest to us more accurately than that of complete strangers, yet we routinely engage in strategic situations with both: our social network impacts our strategic knowledge. Peer‐confirming equilibrium describes the behavioral consequences of this intuition in a noncooperative game. We augment a game with a network to represent strategic information: if two players are linked in the network, they have correct conjectures about each others' strategies. In peer‐confirming equilibrium, there is common belief that players (i) behave rationally and (ii) correctly anticipate neighbors' play. In simultaneous‐move games, adding links to the network always restricts the set of outcomes. In dynamic games, the outcome set may vary non‐monotonically with the network because the actions of well‐connected players help poorly‐connected players coordinate. This solution concept provides a useful language for studying public good provision, highlights a new channel through which central individuals facilitate coordination, and delineates possible sources of miscoordination in protests and coups.

Andorno, Cecilia, and Fabiana Rosi. "Confirming or asserting?" Discourse Markers in Second Language Acquisition / Les marqueurs discursifs dans l’acquisition d’une langue étrangère 7, no. 1 (August 12, 2016): 17–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/lia.7.1.01and.

Full text
Abstract:
Yes and no allow an easy management of talk-in-interaction and, unlike other classes of discourse markers, occur from early stages of L2 acquisition onwards (Perdue 1993; Bernini 1996, 2000; Andorno 2008a for L2 Italian). However, problems in their use can arise in replies to negative utterances such as “Didn’t you hear the news?”, “You didn’t read the news, did you?”, as in this case speakers have to choose one of the two conflicting values possibly encoded by the particles — either asserting a positive/negative polarity for the proposition at issue or confirming/reversing the negative polarity conveyed by the previous speaker. Since Pope (1973), a distinction has been drawn between languages with polarity-oriented particles, such as English yes/no, and languages with agreement-oriented particles, such as Japanese hai/iie. The study compares the use of Italian sì/no and other routines such as echo-constructions in native speakers and L2 learners with either a polarity-oriented or an agreement-oriented L1. Results show that cross-linguistic influence can affect the use of sì/no in L2, as pointed for other domains of pragmatic competence (Gass & Selinker 1992; Kasper 1992; Jarvis & Pavlenko 2008). Results further show that, even when learners lack pragmalinguistic competence in the use of particles, they treat replies of confirmation or rejection differently, thus revealing sociopragmatic sensitivity similar to that of native speakers in recognising the markedness of disagreement replies.

Full text
Abstract:
A testlet is a cluster of items that share a common passage, scenario, or other context. These items might measure something in common beyond the trait measured by the test as a whole; if so, the model for the item responses should allow for this testlet trait. But modeling testlet effects that are negligible makes the model unnecessarily complicated and risks capitalization on chance, increasing the error in parameter estimates. Checking each testlet to see if the items within the testlet share something beyond the primary trait could therefore be useful. This study included (a) comparison between a model with no testlets and a model with testlet g, (b) comparison between a model with all suspected testlets and a model with all suspected testlets except testlet g, and (c) a test of essential unidimensionality. Overall, Comparison b was most useful for detecting testlet effects. Model comparisons based on information criteria, specifically the sample-size adjusted Bayesian Information Criteria (SSA-BIC) and BIC, resulted in fewer false alarms than statistical significance tests. The test of essential unidimensionality had true hit rates and false alarm rates similar to the SSA-BIC when the testlet effect was zero for all testlets except the studied testlet. But the presence of additional testlet effects in the partitioning test led to higher false alarm rates for the test of essential unidimensionality.

Abstract:
Abstract The learning journey of adult learners of Irish in post-conflict Northern Ireland can contain contentious elements, particularly related to (perceived) politicisation of the language during and following the conflict. Coates and Thornborrow (2005) suggest that stories involve striking a balance between deviation from norms and presenting oneself as “culture confirming”, so an apt way to explore these learners’ experiences is to elicit and analyse their narratives. A majority of the narratives contain one or more “opponents”, in the Greimasian sense, that detrimentally affected the learner’s engagement with the Irish language and would therefore invite negative evaluation. The learners, however, use a unique range of devices to mitigate, background, abstract or make implicit their evaluation. This enables them to simultaneously mark and move on from the challenge, maintain or restore equilibrium, and confirm two cultures: their traditional culture and a new post-conflict cultural formation.

Full text
Abstract:
Amyloidosis is a general term for diseases characterised by the deposition of insoluble amyloid fibrils in organs or tissues, leading to organ dysfunction and, in many cases, death. Amyloid fibrils are derived from soluble precursor proteins, with the number of known amyloidogenic proteins increasing over time. The identity of the precursor protein often predicts the disease phenotype, although many of the amyloidoses have overlapping clinical features. Most patients with amyloidosis will require biopsy of an involved organ or tissue to confirm the diagnosis. Cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis, however, may be diagnosed without a biopsy provided stringent criteria are met. Where amyloid is confirmed histologically, the identity of the amyloidogenic protein must be determined, given several of the amyloidoses have disease-specific therapies. Laser capture microdissection and tandem mass spectrometry, LCM-MS, has revolutionised amyloid subtyping, being able to identify the amyloidogenic protein more reliably than antibody-based methods such as immunohistochemistry. Here we summarise the biopsy approach to amyloidosis, as well as the non-biopsy diagnosis of cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis. Proteomic and antibody-based methods for amyloid subtyping are reviewed. Finally, an algorithm for confirming the diagnosis of amyloidosis is presented.
