Corsani, Gabriele, and Marco Bini, eds. La Facoltà di Architettura di Firenze fra tradizione e cambiamento. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-8453-416-3.

Full text
Abstract:
The volume comprises the proceedings of the study days in the Faculty of Architecture (29-30 April 2004) broken down into four thematic sections: The original characteristics of the Florentine school, From Higher School to Faculty, the Florentine school and the contributions from outside, Contemporary metamorphoses. The contributions focus the phases of formation and evolution of the Higher School (1926) and later Faculty (1936) of Architecture, underlining the most significant passages, starting from the initial consolidation of the didactic structure and the emergence of a "Florentine school" characterised by the two strands traceable to Raffaello Fanoni and Giovanni Michelucci. A parallel experience is provided by the contribution of the external teachers, in particular of the Roman school, with lively and at times conflicting approaches. The present situation, albeit with the necessary disciplinary dialectic, features a settlement of the divergences around themes of the relations between architecture, environment and landscape.

Kaufmann, Lena. Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729734.

Full text
Abstract:
How do rural Chinese households deal with the conflicting pressures of migrating into cities to work as well as staying at home to preserve their fields? This is particularly challenging for rice farmers, because paddy fields have to be cultivated continuously to retain their soil quality and value. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and written sources, Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China describes farming households' strategic solutions to this predicament. It shows how, in light of rural-urban migration and agro-technological change, they manage to sustain both migration and farming. It innovatively conceives rural households as part of a larger farming community of practice that spans both staying and migrating household members and their material world. Focusing on one exemplary resource - paddy fields - it argues that socio-technical resources are key factors in understanding migration flows and migrant-home relations. Overall, this book provides rare insights into the rural side of migration and farmers' knowledge and agency.

De Boni, Claudio, ed. Lo stato sociale nel pensiero politico contemporaneo. II Novecento. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-8453-370-8.

Full text
Abstract:
Lo stato sociale nel pensiero politico contemporaneo. Il Novecento. Parte seconda: dal dopoguerra a oggi is intended to complete the overview of the presence of the Welfare State concept in contemporary political thought that began in 2007 with the volume dealing with the nineteenth century and then continued in 2009 with the first part of the reconstruction relating to the twentieth century (both published by Firenze University Press). The final period, from the end of the Second World War to the present, is marked by deeply conflicting situations. These range from, on the one hand, the success of the institutions proper to the Welfare State among the artificers of one of the most socially prosperous periods of Western history to, on the other, the surfacing of critical elements with repercussions which are among the most serious political issues of the present time. Uncoiling right through the second half of the twentieth century is the relentless clash between broadly social-democratic theories and those of a neo-liberalist stamp, with the addition of a third source of reflection: the "critical thought" aimed at underscoring the shortcomings of the Welfare State and its substantial dependence on the capitalist cycle. These are the historiographical issues addressed in this book by a number of scholars, engaged in reconstructing the amplitude and the internal breakdown of a debate that involves the political philosophy of the entire contemporary western world.

Abstract:
Shared genes give relatives shared interests in each other’s evolutionary success, yet differences in patterns of relatedness can create conflicts. In a monogamous relationship, parents are equally related to all their children and also equally related to all their grandchildren. However, their children are more closely related to their own children and take greater interest in them than in their nieces and nephews. Various types of parent–offspring conflict can be explained in terms of such patterns of genetic relatedness. The authors extend this principle to mother–daughter conflict over choice of the daughter’s partner and to competition between sisters by considering how parental influence causes increased competition among same-sex siblings. The authors conclude that females wish family members to choose partners with traits that may provide more direct benefits and potentially improve their fitness, that individuals choose sexier partners for themselves, and that parental influence may theoretically drive sister competition.

Dixon, T. Scott. Plural Slot Theory. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198828198.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Slot theory (Gilmore 2013) bears the full brunt of Fine’s (2000) symmetric completions and conflicting adicities problems. This chapter develops an alternative, plural slot theory (or pocket theory), which avoids these problems, key elements of which are first considered by Yi (1999). Like the slot theorist, the pocket theorist posits entities (pockets) in properties and relations that can be occupied. But unlike the slot theorist, the pocket theorist denies that at most one entity can occupy any one of them. As a result, she must also deny that the adicity of a property or relation is equal to the number of occupiable entities in it. By abandoning these theses, however, the pocket theorist is able to avoid Fine’s problems, resulting in a stronger theory about the internal structure of properties and relations.

Flentø, Johnny, and Leonardo Santos Simao. Donor relations and sovereignty. UNU-WIDER, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2020/892-4.

Full text
Abstract:
As a sovereign country, Mozambique initially relied on international solidarity and managed its donor relations well. Donor dependency entailed some loss of agency for the government as it allowed donors to challenge its capacity but never its authority. However, in the last decade, donor countries have expressed disappointment with reforms and challenged the government’s legitimacy. This is not only because of developments in Mozambique. Donor countries have become less enthusiastic about long-term, harmonized development cooperation and less concerned with aid effectiveness for poverty alleviation and inclusive growth. Aid budgets are under pressure and development finance is linked more to other donor countries’ foreign policy concerns, especially security and commerce. Mozambique should expect increasing instrumentalization of aid budgets by donors. It must be able to address its partners’ concerns other than those of poverty alleviation, human rights, and democracy and carefully weigh conflicting interests of its partners against its own long-term interests. The institutions Mozambique developed to deal with donors are not well suited to today’s challenges. They focus on less relevant areas of the relationship with foreign countries, which often serve other agendas. Reforms could start with strengthening Mozambique’s foreign service as a genuine coordinator of foreign relations and the establishment of greater discipline around national plans and strategies. Institutionalizing strong links between the foreign ministry and key economic ministries under the leadership of the prime minister could help.
