Rosa Yasin Hasan's novel Guardians of the Air (2009) offers a glimpse into Syrian society prior to the revolution and civil war that devastated the country for over a decade. The novel's central character, Anat, works as a translator at the Canadian embassy in Damascus, allowing her to navigate the interfaith divisions among different religious communities. Acknowledging literature's distinctive ability to mirror reality (Orlando 2007), this article employs a social psychology lens to analyse the novel. Through this perspective, the social and psychological dynamics among the characters are explored. The story revolves around characters who confront the challenges of a tightly compartmentalised society, resembling that of Syria under the Asad regime, where crossing the borders between religious and ethnic communities can be perilous.

This study was performed to investigate the family life of women forced to migrate from Syria to Turkey. The data of the research was collected as a result of face-to-face interviews with 200 women living in Ankara, forced migrating from Syria in 2011 and after, under temporary protection, aged 18 and over, currently married or with marriage experience. In the study, it was determined that women had conflicts with their spouses mostly on '' financial situation or unemployment '' (42.9%), with their children on '' the boy not being docile and obedient” (38.7%), with their spouse's family and/or their own family on “preventing participation in decisions” (21.3%). As a result of the findings of the study, required recommendations were made to the immigrants and the related institutions and organizations.

Fire is a major disturbance affecting Mediterranean ecosystems. Due to a lack of exhaustive fire registration, fire drivers in the Middle East have been hardly investigated. We propose here the analysis of a newly produced fire patch reconstruction from remote sensing over the 1984 – 2020 period in Lebanon and Syria. First, we will provide a description of the particular bimodal and late season fire regimes in the two neighboring countries. Then, taking into account their different socio-political conditions since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, we will disentangle climate and social drivers by analyzing the ICEWS conflict events data-base.

Abstract How do civilians protect themselves against organized and spontaneous violence during a civil war? How do they access food, livelihoods, water, and health support when the conflict precludes access to such necessities? And what facilitates adaptation to these harsh conditions? This chapter addresses these questions by examining the case of the Syrian civil war, a protracted conflict characterized by extreme violence against civilians, unprecedented humanitarian need, and limited involvement by the international community. Drawing on original and varied quantitative and qualitative data collected in dozens of communities between 2013 and 2020, this chapter identifies and analyses diverse expressions of civilian agency and the forms of familial, community, and individual self-protection that have arisen in this context. The chapter demonstrates theoretically and empirically the centrality of knowledge, learning, and anticipation, and relatedly, the importance of social connectedness for adaptation as a form of civilian protective agency during the civil war in Syria.
