The research aims to investigate how the sporting route of Rio Grande do Sul athletes who participated in the 2016 Paralympic Games, held in Rio de Janeiro. This research is supported by oral sources, newspaper reports and magazines, information from social networks, as well as bibliographical review on the subject. The results evidenced that the insertion in the sports practice of Rio Grande do Sul paralympic athletes happened from the adult life. The athletes were introduced to paralympic sport through their peers and faced difficulties in remaining in high-performance sport due to restricted sports incentives. We conclude that new public policies of incentive to the high-performance sport in the state of Rio Grande do Sul are necessary. Moreover, the increase in financial incentives will probably have an impact on the increase in the number of Paralympic athletes.

Abstract:
Introduction: In recent years, there has been a reduction in cases of malnutrition in Brazil but this has been accompanied with an increase in the overweight and obesity rates. These changes, together with others, such as changes in eating patterns and lifestyle, characterise the process of nutritional transition. Objective: We aimed to compare the prevalence of nutritional status of beneficiary children of the Bolsa Família Program (PBF) in the states of Acre and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and to analyse the changes in the anthropometric profile of these children during 5 years. Methods: This is an ecological study using secondary data from the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SISVAN) and Bolsa Família Department of SUS (DATASUS), which assessed the nutritional status of children over 5 years and under 10 years benefiting from the PBF in the years 2011 to 2015 in the states of Acre and Rio Grande do Sul. The sample consisted of 94,865 children from Acre and 342,462 children from Rio Grande do Sul. The Body Mass Index was used to classify the nutritional status. Results: The mean prevalence of eutrophic children aged 5 to 10 years in Acre was 70.42% and was 61.28% in Rio Grande do Sul. Overweight was 13.06% in Acre and 19.48% in Rio Grande do Sul. Obesity was 5.08% in Acre and 9.36% in Rio Grande do Sul. Severe obesity was 4.02% in Acre and 6.92% in Rio Grande do Sul. Conclusion: Overweight and obesity in children benefiting from the PBF has been growing in the last 5 years, notably in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This is possibly due to the fact that the nutritional transition is at a more advanced stage here than in Acre State.

Abstract:
Diapoma is reviewed and four species are recognized: (1) Diapoma thauma, new species, from streams of the rio Jacuí basin, state of Rio Grande do Sul; (2) D. pyrrhopteryx, new species collected from the rio Canoas and streams flowing into this basin in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, Brazil; (3) Diapoma terofali, from streams flowing into rio Uruguay in Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and streams flowing into rio de la Plata, Argentina; and (4) Diapoma speculiferum, from lowland coastal streams in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and Uruguay. Diapoma pyrrhopteryx possess the posteroventral opercular elongation typical of D. speculiferum, type species of the genus, but which is absent in D. thauma and D. terofali. Nonetheless, all the diapomin species have the caudal pouch organ about equally developed in both sexes and the dorsal portion of the pouch opening bordered by a series of 3 to 8 elongated scales, the two derived features that characterize the group. The two previously described species, D. speculiferum and D. terofali, are redescribed. Previous hypotheses of relationships among the diapomin genera Planaltina, Diapoma and Acrobrycon are discussed on the basis of preliminary morphological information. It is proposed that the Diapomini is a monophyletic group. An identification key, information on sexual dimorphism, gonad anatomy, reproductive mode and distribution of the species of Diapoma are provided.

Abstract:
Earth imaging technologies using orbital platforms have allowed new approaches in the analyses, compartmentalization, and territorial visualization. These cartographic informations have many applications in agricultural, urban and environmental monitoring. In the case of vast geographic regions, such as Brazil, one expects that the many products obtained from imaging technology will be used to reduce costs and to provide a better understanding of the territory. The crossanalysis of the products from various imaging systems of different characteristics (e.g. pixel size, band, and data) allows the improvement of current maps as well as more complex analyses. The macrozoning of the state Rio Grande do Sul was accomplished by integrating orbital data of different characteristics and other cartographic products. The following sources supplied data on Rio Grande do Sul: 1) Landsat TM mosaic; 2) temporal NDVI/NOAA combination; 3) geomorphologic map; and 4) altimetric map. The cross-analysis of the data allow us to gather in a single map information from distinct cartographic sources, which better represent the diversity of the thematic classes in relation to the usage patterns of soil and plant life in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the female homicide rate due to aggression in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, using this as a "proxy" of femicide. This was an ecological study which correlated the female homicide rate due to aggression in Rio Grande do Sul, according to the 35 microregions defined by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), with socioeconomic and demographic variables access and health indicators. Pearson's correlation test was performed with the selected variables. After this, multiple linear regressions were performed with variables with p < 0.20. The standardized average of female homicide rate due to aggression in the period from 2003 to 2007 was 3.1 obits per 100 thousand. After multiple regression analysis, the final model included male mortality due to aggression (p = 0.016), the percentage of hospital admissions for alcohol (p = 0.005) and the proportion of ill-defined deaths (p = 0.015). The model have an explanatory power of 39% (adjusted r2 = 0.391). The results are consistent with other studies and indicate a strong relationship between structural violence in society and violence against women, in addition to a higher incidence of female deaths in places with high alcohol hospitalization.

Abstract:
The knowledge regarding earthworm species richness in subtropical Brazil is limited, particularly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), where only a few sites have been sampled. In this study we assessed earthworm richness in different ecosystems of RS, prioritizing un-sampled regions. Fifteen ecosystems, including native vegetation and other ecosystems with variable levels of disturbance were sampled in 30 counties in RS, totaling 77 sampling points, mainly in the Pampa biome. Qualitative sampling was performed by handsorting soil monoliths and fixing the earthworms in 4% formalin solution. Species identification was based on morphological characters, and species richness and Shannon (H) and McIntosh (U) diversity indices were calculated for each ecosystem. Twenty-one earthworm species were identified, belonging to seven families: Glossoscolecidae (8), Rhinodrilidae (2), Ocnerodrilidae (4), Megascolecidae (4), Acanthodrilidae (1), Lumbricidae (1) and Criodrilidae (1). From these, ten are new species belonging to the genera: Glossoscolex (6), Fimoscolex (1), Kerriona (1), Eukerria (1), and one aquatic species of the Criodrilidae family, belonging to a new genus. Most of the native species (Urobenus brasiliensis, Fimoscolex n.sp.1 and the Glossoscolex spp.) predominated in ecosystems little altered by human activity, while exotic (Amynthas gracilis, Amynthas rodericensis, Metaphire californica, Aporrectodea trapezoides) and peregrine species (Pontoscolex corethrurus) predominated in areas with more human disturbance. Native ecosystems with lower disturbance, particularly forests and native pastures had higher diversity than disturbed sites. This is the first record of A. rodericencis for Brazil and most sites represent new collection records for the known species in RS.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT. First tennis competitions in Rio Grande do Sul (1920-1960): from disputes between clubs to the state championship. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the first tennis competitions organized in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, during the 1920s and 1960s. METHODS: The initial time frame of the investigation is justified by the fact that the first tennis championship took place in the state, in 1921 and, in the following decades, the propagation of competitions between clubs from Rio Grande do Sul followed. The final delimitation of the study is the 1960s, when there was an expressive number of tennis competitions and the highlight of tennis players from the state in the Brazilian scenario. The construction of the historical text mobilized the concept of sports memory. Therefore, historical documents were analyzed, such as newspaper reports published in cities in Rio Grande do Sul. Such research materials were treated using the document analysis technique. These documents were compared with studies located through a bibliographic review. RESULTS: The results of the investigation recorded that the 1920s were marked by the regulation of tennis practice in clubs in Rio Grande do Sul, mainly due to the creation of the Gaúcha Tennis Federation in 1929, with the purpose of promoting the sport, in addition to organizing competitions. CONCLUSION: Decades later, with the foundation of the Brazilian Tennis Confederation, in 1955, tennis started to have a centralized administrative structure and there was an increase in the number of competitions held in Rio Grande do Sul.

Abstract:
Viviania linostigma is restricted to the Brazilian territory, considered a threatened and endemic species of a small region in the Araucaria Forest. This species has been recorded only in southeast Santa Catarina State, and the extreme northeast of Rio Grande do Sul State, in Brazil. Here, we report four new records of V. linostigma for Rio Grande do Sul, expanding its known distribution by 262 km to the south and improving knowledge about the conservation status of the species. These novelties reinforce that species conservation requires more investment in fieldwork, especially in little sampled regions.

Abstract:
Abstract: In general, the archaeological collections formed from random and unsystematic collecting that exist in institutions of safeguarding and research, like museums and universities, are not the object of scientific concern and social interest. This situation has been evidenced by institutional realities marked by processes of isolation and neglect, ending in the obliteration of a referential memory of the indigenous past. Thus the isolation of archaeological sources had been observed at the south end of Rio Grande do Sul, from the relations that were established with the archaeological collections of Museu da Cidade do Rio Grande (MCRG). From the exhibition “Prehistory of the southern region”, it proposed to understand how an archaeological collection was formed and which are the discourses and narratives built by the mentioned institution to the pre-colonial past of the region. Based on this, we support the possibility of retaking the studies of groups of out-of-context objects, promoting the revival of these collections in heritage and museum scenes.

ABSTRACT: Protozoal diseases caused by species of Sarcocystiscan cause serious damage in sheep flocks, inducing decreased growth conversion rates and partial or complete loss of carcasses at the slaughterhouse. This article describes an outbreak of Sarcocystis giganteainfection in sheep slaughtered in a farm in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Between July and September 2013, three sheep showed multiple nodules in the esophagus that were microscopically characterized as encapsulated cysts filled with elongated, basophilic, nucleated structures morphologically consistent with S. giganteabradyzoites. Diagnosis was made based on the epidemiological, macroscopic, and microscopic findings. This is the first report of this infection in sheep in Rio Grande do Sul and should be recognized by veterinarians, especially during meat inspection.

Abstract:
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonotic infection causing chronic and systemic disease in numerous mammals. It is caused by the Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi protozoan and transmitted by bites from the female phlebotomine Lutzomyia longipalpis. Rio Grande do Sul is a Brazilian state that was considered VL-free. However, in 2008, canine VL was detected in Western cities of the state. Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of VL and despite having a wide distribution in Brazil, only in 2009 was identified in São Borja, Rio Grande do Sul, in the urban area of the city. The present study evaluated the prevalence of canine VL in kennels managed by local and non-governmental organizations, unstudied areas of Rio Grande do Sul. The dogs were subjected to general, tegumentary, and lymph node examinations. A complete blood count, parasitological and serological examinations were also performed. The serum-positive dogs showed dermatological lesions, normocytic normochromic anemia, thrombocytopenia and neutrophilic leukocytosis. Our investigation of non-endemic districts confirms the presence of oligosymptomatic dogs in Rio Grande do Sul.

Abstract:
Rio Grande do Sul (RS) is the southernmost state in Brazil and includes areas within the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. The semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha) from RS are poorly known, with only 14 previously recorded species. We carried out two expeditions in this state, in 2002 and 2019, across 19 municipalities. Here, we provide new records for 19 species, of which 13 are recorded for the first time from the state, five have their distributions expanded, and one is recorded again from a same locality previously reported in the literature. Furthermore, 13 species were collected for the first time in the Pampa biome and one in the Atlantic Forest.
