Se dice que esta danza fue fundada en 1870 por un señor de apellido Macías y que desde entonces ha aparecido año tras año en los Carnavales de Barranquilla, convirtiéndose en la danza más característica de estas fiestas y en la más importante de todas las danzas y comparsas participantes.
