A data warehouse is essential for an organization to process and analyze data coming from the organization. Hence, a data warehouse together with a dashboard to visualize the processed data are built to accommodate the need of the church administrator to analyze a large set of church congregation data. The data warehouse is built using the Kimball principle. This Kimball principle emphasizes the implementation of a dimensional model in the data warehouse, not a relational model used in a regular transactional database. Abstract:
In four case studies of congregations in Guatemala, this chapter introduces and discusses the concept of building energy: the emotional energy that groups experience when undertaking a building project. In a country with an increasing number of congregations, it discusses: a Seventh-day Adventist congregation pooling their resources to purchase land and construct a cement-block church; a Pentecostal congregation that constructed a corrugated steel building on rented land but outfitted it with white ceramic tile floor, original artwork, and an impressive PA system; a Catholic church in an indigenous town that worked through conflict to construct a new sanctuary with the help of the community; and a non-denominational church that chose to design and build a structure themselves, using the project as a means of providing work and architectural apprenticeship for its young adults. Across the cases, the building projects brought church and/or community members together, even though the projects often revealed tensions over congregational identity.

Religious congregations regularly take buildings not originally intended for religious use and convert them to spaces for worship and fellowship. This chapter includes five case studies: a Guatemalan evangelical megachurch that worships in a parking garage; a suburban Anglican congregation that transformed a former manufacturing plant; a group in Vermont that turned a former US Army horse barn into a mosque; a suburban non-denominational church that meets each week in a high school auditorium; and an Orthodox Christian congregation that altered a Missouri Synod Lutheran building for their use. The authors argue that a number of religious groups can make spaces work for them, particularly if they have constrained resources and are willing to be creative in changing the interior of structures.

Abstract:
Religious buildings start by hosting a religious congregation who built or modified the structure. This chapter considers the later fate of these buildings: What happens to religious buildings over the decades, and how do the congregations that worship in those older structures view the building? Across four Protestant denominations in the Chicago region, the authors examine how many churches present in 1936 are still standing and how the buildings are used. For the congregations still worshipping in the same structure over eight decades later, they look at how the building appears on their website. A good number of the church buildings are still standing, though who uses them can vary across denominations. The website images show how some congregations make use of their historic structure. Together, these findings suggest that religious buildings have ongoing building energy even if they were constructed long ago.

This chapter introduces a method for identifying and analyzing ethical questions by exploring the meanings and uses of a synagogue food garden. A midwestern American synagogue community experienced tensions regarding the demolition and renovation of its historic building. Utilitarian considerations clashed with other community values. To help repair tensions, some congregation members turned to Jewish ethical concerns with the environment and community and created a food garden on synagogue property. The food garden created a new context in which members could come together and live out Jewish values of feeding the hungry, beautifying mitzvot (commandments), and making good use of natural resources.

Abstract:
How did the church building become sacred space? Early Christians understood two models of sacred presence. In the first, sanctity was invoked by the congregation coming together in common prayer, an experience that was formalized into the liturgy. In the second, sanctity was represented by the presence of relics or the tombs of martyrs and saints. In Rome, the early churches inside the walls of the city were primarily liturgical; those outside the walls were commemorative, set in relationship to the tombs of martyrs and the surrounding catacombs and cemeteries. Subsequent centuries witnessed a collapsing of the two categories. At the same time, the building vocabulary expanded, with baptisteries serving as symbolic settings for the initiation rite and mausolea offering special settings for privileged burials. By the fifth century, monasticism became a regular part of the Christian landscape.

Abstract:
This chapter refers to Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo, a significant example of mid-twentieth-century modern architecture that was designed by prominent New York architect Max Abramovitz. It describes the Temple Beth Zion as a four-part complex that consists of the synagogue, a two-story religious school building, a multipurpose auditorium, and a chapel. It also talks about how Abramovitz turned to the aesthetic of neo-expressionism and brutalism for Temple Beth Zion, which is termed the antirational trends that appeared in postwar modernism. The chapter recounts the deep roots of Temple Beth Zion in the Buffalo community, tracing its origin to the late 1840s and referencing it as the fourth reform congregation in America.

This chapter shows Isaac Mayer Wise’s activities in the post-bellum era. His first thought was for matters of immediate congregational interest and prestige. As early as 1860, Wise’s own congregation had found the Lodge Street synagogue inadequate. The war postponed efforts to build a new house of worship, but in 1863 a site was bought at the corner of Plum and Eighth Streets, and building started two years later. In 1866, the Plum Street temple was dedicated. Wise used the occasion of his dedication sermon to expound ‘the leading points of American Judaism, the new school in Judaism’. The consecration of a new temple was one of the extraordinary occasions of a rabbi’s career. The chapter considers how Wise acquitted himself under workaday conditions and what impression he gave.

Abstract:
Bautista’s life provides a Mormon chapter to the history of conflict over leadership between Euro-American missionary movements and their indigenous converts. Insistence on indigenous ecclesiastical authority and the practice of polygamy cost Bautista his membership in the Mormon Church and nearly every personal relationship. Nevertheless, Bautista never bowed to the pressure of Euro-American religious authority. His contributions include: congregation building in Central Mexico, the Mormon Colonies, Arizona, and Salt Lake City; teaching genealogical research methods to Mexicans from 1922 to 1924; his leadership role in the schismatic movement known as the Third Convention (1936); his authorship of the largest indigenous Mormon theological work to date; his decades of diaries; and the nearly seventy-year survival of his utopian community. His continuing relevance is underscored by the fact that increasing conversions among Latin Americans points to an indigenous majority in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the near future.
