Abstract:
Patients in intensive care units (ICU) are at increased risk of corneal abrasions and infectious keratitis due to poor eyelid closure, decreased blink reflex, and increased exposure to pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the ocular surface problems in patients who stayed in ICU more than 7 days and were consulted by an ophthalmologist. There were 26 men and 14 women with a mean age of 40.1 ± 18.15 years (range 17–74 years). Conjunctiva hyperemia, mucopurulent or purulent secretion, corneal staining, and corneal filaments were observed in 56.25%, 36.25

It was reported a case of a 9-year-old Brazilian Fila male dog that had been affected by a tissular formation of the nictitant membrane of the right eye with four months of evolution. Conjunctival hyperemia and edema, serosanguinolent secretion, and a conjunctival neoformation at the nictitant membrane were observed. Surgical exeresis of the neoformation was performed. Endothelial cells slightly differentiated and pleomorphic, with an intense vascular neoformation compatible to nictitant membrane hemangiosarcoma, were found at the histological exam.

Evaluation of the role of corneal neovascularization is very important due to a large number of diseases and various effects of exogenous and endogenous factors inducing angiogenesis. Despite the large number of keratopathies accompanied by angiogenesis, ulcerative processes remain the most common cause of vascular growth in stroma. The variety of symptoms accompanying corneal ulcer, as well as the difference in both volume and depth of the corneal lesion dictates the need to assess the value of vascularization in ulcerative lesions of the cornea in small domestic animals.
