Abstract:
Knowledge builds on data and/or information that is organized and processed to convey understanding, experience, accumulated learning and expertise. At the moment, the volumes of data and information are quickly growing uncontrollably. The sheer amount of data, that lacks the structure, connectivity and intent, cannot be utilized efficiently later on. There is ever the greater need to transfer this unstructured mass of bits and bytes to meaningful information and to human understandable knowledge, as it is understood in the industry. However, there are major challenges in understanding the essence of information flow that should connect the different design departments and activities to be part of the life-time information of a product, including its processes and services. The paper introduces a vision where the semantically rich product-process information flows through the life-cycle phases – design, manufacturing, services – of a product or a system, and thus increases the content knowledge.

Abstract:
We connect the urgency of the article with the preservation of the integrity of Ukraine in the conditions of military conflict. The article describes the research on transformation of the current state of social wellbeing and life attitudes in students from the occupied territories of Ukraine under conditions of relocated higher education institutions. The goal: to study the transformation in social wellbeing and life attitudes in the mentioned strata of students under conditions of operation of a relocated state higher education institution. The methods: analysis, synthesis, generalization, specification, systematizing, comparison, documentation study, interviewing, mathematics statistics methods. Scientific novelty: theoretical foundations and the essence of reintegration of such students, as well as the measures are determined that facilitate it: information and explanatory work, socio-educational, psychological, pedagogical, socio-economic, and legal ones. It is proved that national-oriented upbringing is the priority in successful reintegration on condition of solving students' problems. The results: the efficiency in the use of the mentioned measures is proved by transformational changes related to overcoming the imbalance between the social wellbeing indicators (the level of life satisfaction, interest in life, general mood) and life attitudes (focus on process, result, freedom) of such students.

Abstract:
Situating psychoanalysis in the context of Jewish history, this paper takes up Freud's famous 1930 question: what is left in Judaism after one has abandoned faith in God, the Hebrew language and nationalism, and his answer: a great deal, perhaps the very essence, but an essence that we do not know. On the one hand, it argues that ‘not knowing’ connects psychoanalysis to Judaism's ancestral preoccupation with God, a preoccupation different from that of the more philosophical Greek, Latin and Christian traditions of theology. On the other hand, ‘not knowing‘ connects psychoanalysis to a post-Enlightenment conception of the person (i.e. of personal life), as opposed to the more abstract notion of the subject associated with Kant.

Abstract:
Is the ingenuous inquiry What is the film about? so simple, for the response to that thing which sometimes causes confusion not only for a common audience, but for an experienced critic. The issue for unveiling film essence through its artistic time analysis has been declared. Lars von Triers Nymphomaniac has been considered as an example for temporal analysis, algorithm of motion towards cinema products essence core being given. Through analysis of time forms constituting film parts, genuine essence has been brought to light what the author has really had in mind - probably even contrary to his aims and against his statements. The conclusion reads that causal relationship has been found as temporal relationship. Hence, film story and artistic time within cinema product is declared to be substantially valid. Looking into horizontal time of Nymphomaniac made the author's idea of logics deployment and its general outline clear. For this purpose temporal forms that include plot-making essence, first of all cyclic and non-linear time, have been taken into consideration. Film temporal construction reveals itself at once through the heroines realized procedure of remembrance of her own life circumstances that led to a catastrophe occured at that very evening when Seligman found her covered with sewage and in an extremely bad state. The above mentioned procedure supposes convergence towards the truth that a hero confirms in relation to himself. So that does happen in Lars von Triers film. The inner film cycle ends with that. The question still remains why Joe for whom a persons life is the highest value that nobody can make an attempt on, pulls the trigger and kills the man who provides her with a lodge and became her speaker during that long tormented night. What does these two heroes conflict content consist of? For the purpose of answering the question it has been studied how time for both heroes is constructed. It has been shown that characters conflict is an unsolvable conflict of two different value systems connected with different types of culture.

Abstract:
In this article, I offer a somatic process to non-movers at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. These participants also offer reflections on their individual experience post-moving. As a facilitator, I invite you to take part in this process, whether you are a dancer or non-mover (whatever your age or ability). The process focuses on self-regulation and interoceptive awareness, allowing the time and space to connect with Self. Self-regulation and interoceptive awareness are two of the most important aspects of somatic movement in supporting free-flowing movement and balancing the nervous system. Self-regulation in turn can produce a sense of agency – meaning a sense of autonomy and release within the body can occur. In line with cultural pressures experienced within society, somatic processes can ease the anxieties of everyday life. Inviting Self into a practical, felt process is sometimes what we need in order to re-evaluate our positioning and perceptions within the world. As human beings we often find ourselves in stressful and challenging situations that ultimately affect the body’s nervous state and our relationship with Self. We currently find ourselves in the middle of a global pandemic, and opportunities to connect with Self in creative, communal ways are hindered. I am offering this article as a way of communicating my appreciation and passion for somatic work during this pandemic. As a Ph.D. student studying somatic movement dance education and therapy, I deeply recognize it is important to be connected with community and others, as well as my own inner sphere. Connection produces a sense of optimism during this time. This article offers a simplistically detailed, yet effective process that locates and contacts Self within our feeling, sensing organism. As we begin to re-connect with our energy and interoceptive awareness, a physiological shift can be experienced. When we drop our awareness within the vitality of the moving body, a change in consciousness can occur. Using breath awareness as an inroad to sensing internal processes, I offer this practical process to you, inviting you to cultivate an inner essence of gravity, breath, ground and body.

Abstract:
This paper describes the evolving role of robotics in healthcare and allied areas with special concerns relating to the management and control of the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The prime utilization of such robots is to minimize person-to-person contact and to ensure cleaning, sterilization and support in hospitals and similar facilities such as quarantine. This will result in minimizing the life threat to medical staff and doctors taking an active role in the management of theCOVID-19 pandemic. The intention of the present research is to highlight the importance of medical robotics in general and then to connect its utilization with the perspective of COVID-19 management so that the hospital management can direct themselves to maximize the use of medical robots for various medical procedures. This is despite the popularity of telemedicine, which is also effective in similar situations. In essence, the recent achievement of the Korean and Chinese health sectors in obtaining active control of the COVID-19 pandemic was not possible without the use of state of the art medical technology.

Abstract:
The article presents key competencies as a complex of important qualities of a modern specialist, which are required for successful professional performance, self-realization and full-fledged life of an individual. The relevance of the topic is caused by the rapid growth of requirements for a skilled worker, the interest of modern entrepreneurs in the specialists, who are able to work with information, be creative and think critically, discover optimal solutions, express and defend their own opinion, cooperate and collaborate. Such concepts as “competency” and “key competencies” are specified. The views on key competencies are presented in the context of European and Ukrainian legislation. The article highlights the need to develop those competencies in future skilled workers, which contribute to developing personal potential, promote self-realization, expand employment opportunities and ensure success in a rapidly changing society. Key competencies of future sewing workers are presented as a system of competencies, which, when combined with professional knowledge, skills and abilities, will allow such workers to achieve positive results in personal and professional life and will ensure an effective interpersonal interaction in the production environment. It is proved that the key and professional competencies of sewing workers are interrelated and should be formed and developed simultaneously. The article justifies the need to develop these qualities in the process of educating future tailors and cutters, whose professional activity is connected with communication with the customer, the choice of a model and material, fittings, detection and elimination of defects, ability to work on several orders simultaneously.

ABSTRACT: Consuming goods for the necessities of life is a natural thing. However, consuming that exceeds the limit until wasting should be avoided. The dilemma of human needs today presents a new phenomenon in terms of fulfilling the necessities of life. This phenomenon is none other than-widely known by society- consumerism. The process is to use goods of production in excess or inappropriate manner consciously and sustainably. So, this phenomenon (consumerism) continues to be one of the central themes in this era of globalization. Unfortunately, the ferocity of this ideological influence ostracizes the fundamental values that exist within each individual. Consumerism eliminates the significance of the basic essence that exists in man. Humans who should remember the nature of themselves as social beings who are always connected to one another in this cosmos are now slowly losing that meaning. With the mindset and lifestyle of consumptive, human as if imprisoned and alienated. Quality of life is no longer measured based on the value of meaningfulness for others and the environment but measured by materials. This consequence becomes a fundamental crisis which is humans essence degradation. Abstract:
This dissertation presents research in the development and use of a multi-modal visual and haptic virtual model in higher education. The model, named Chemical Force Feedback (CFF), represents molecular recognition through the example of protein-ligand docking, and enables students to simultaneously see and feel representations of the protein and ligand molecules and their force interactions. The research efforts have been divided between educational research aspects and development of haptic feedback techniques. The CFF model was evaluated in situ through multiple data-collections in a university course on molecular interactions. To isolate possible influences of haptics on learning, half of the students ran CFF with haptics, and the others used the equipment with force feedback disabled. Pre- and post-tests showed a significant learning gain for all students. A particular influence of haptics was found on students reasoning, discovered through an open-ended written probe where students' responses contained elaborate descriptions of the molecular recognition process. Students' interactions with the system were analyzed using customized information visualization tools. Analysis revealed differences between the groups, for example, in their use of visual representations on offer, and in how they moved the ligand molecule. Differences in representational and interactive behaviours showed relationships with aspects of the learning outcomes. The CFF model was improved in an iterative evaluation and development process. A focus was placed on force model design, where one significant challenge was in conveying information from data with large force differences, ranging from very weak interactions to extreme forces generated when atoms collide. Therefore, a History Dependent Transfer Function (HDTF) was designed which adapts the translation of forces derived from the data to output forces according to the properties of the recently derived forces. Evaluation revealed that the HDTF improves the ability to haptically detect features in volumetric data with large force ranges. To further enable force models with high fidelity, an investigation was conducted to determine the perceptual Just Noticeable Difference (JND) in force for detection of interfaces between features in volumetric data. Results showed that JNDs vary depending on the magnitude of the forces in the volume and depending on where in the workspace the data is presented.

Abstract:
As computing technology has become a vital part of everyday life, studies have increasingly scrutinized the underlying meaning of computational things. As different devices become interwoven with daily practices and routines, there is a growing interest in understanding not only their functional meaning in computational terms but also their meaning in relation to other non-computation artefacts. This thesis investigates how people relate to artefacts and how their individual values and attitudes affect this relationship.  The analysis is based on four ethnographic studies, which look at the richness of ordinary interactions with technology to understand the impact of technology upon practice and experience. The process through which humans develop a relationship to artefacts is framed as a continuous series of encounters, through which the individual constantly reshapes their relationship to things.  Artefacts are seen as lines in the mesh of everyday life, and the encounters are the intersections between lines. This approach–grounded in phenomenology and paired with an anthropological understanding of everyday life–reconceptualises understanding of the processes of adaption, meaning-making, disposing and recycling. The work reveals how human relations to all kinds of things–in the form of meaning–is continually transforming. Core to this understanding is the cultural relative essence that becomes perceived of the artefacts themselves. This essence deeply affects the way we encounter and thus interact with technology, as well as objects more broadly. In the daily interaction with computing devices we can observe that computing technology alters the mesh on a different level than non-computational artefacts: digital interfaces pull our lines together, bundle experiences an affect how we encounter the material and the social world. This enables computing devices to have meanings distinct from non-computing technology. To go further, computing is itself a mode of existence – a crucial difference in things that helps us understand the complexity of the material world.

Abstract:
The Tibetan practice of bcud len, or 'extracting the essence', has been for long a neglected aspect of Tibetan medical and spiritual knowledge with scattered evidence and little certainty regarding its origins or the extent of its effective presence, either in the past or at currently. In this study, seventy-three texts have been identified and tabulated. Of these, sixty-seven have been summarised and commented on, and five of these, each representative of one type of the practice, have been translated in full. All but a handful of these texts have not been translated previously. The research findings suggest that, whatever its influences from Indian, Chinese or other medical cultures, bcud len soon evolved into a distinctively Tibetan method of life enhancement, with teachings that emphasise both spiritual and medical aims and the use of indigenous Tibetan remedies, accompanied in some cases by particular rituals. The content of the texts indicates that the term bcud len can be applied legitimately to practices involving ritually empowered pills and elixirs which are ingested, respiratory and yogic exercises, dietary restrictions and rituals involving mantra recitation, visualisation and yab yum union with a consort, in that all these are considered to be means of obtaining 'the essence'. The teachings offer extensive material for those interested in the evolution and contemporary practice of Tibetan medicine, especially its botanical aspects, and for historians of ritual. In particular, the texts provide ample evidence of the lineage tradition in Tibetan religious culture, citing examples of transmissions through gter ma, whereby teachings are preserved in secret to be recovered at a future date by a gter ton or treasure revealer. The final section contains conversations with Tibetan doctors, lamas and contemporary practitioners of bcud len in Asia and the West that complement recent ethnographic studies in the field testifying to the continuing vitality of the tradition.

Remali, Adel Muhammad. "Capturing the essence of the capital city : urban form and urban life in the city centre of Tripoli, Libya." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 2014. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=25567.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this research is to build a body of knowledge, which would lead to understand the relationship between socio-cultural practices and urban form within the city centre of Tripoli. The research analyses the urban form of Tripoli by comparing three areas of the city centre, which have different origin, history and layout, at the scale of the neighbourhood and urban block. The research firstly applies a quantitative approach to urban morphology through the use of two sets of indices that identify and calculate the patterns of street network and urban blocks. Secondly, the thesis investigates how the quality of street front affects social interaction in different urban patterns, based on street centrality. Finally, the research defines constitutedness, including building permeability and typological depth as well as street intervisibility, which define the relationship between public and private spaces. Aspects of the investigation includes: the historical development of the city centre of Tripoli as well as the role of Islamic principles in shaping the social life and the built environment in the traditional urban form. The research proposes a methodology for the representation of Tripoli urban fabric. This method mirrors a structural approach to urban morphology, in that it selectively only represents those aspects of the urban form (spatial factors) that may result being connected by permanent spatial relationships. “Permanent”, in this context, means recurrent in space (geography) and time (history) within relatively large and defined geographical and historical domains. Supposed permanent relationships are therefore both extrapolated and tested by means of an evidence-based approach grounded on real case analysis. The case analysis is conducted at the street neighbourhood and block scale. The research seeks to identify the process of transformation that has occurred in the evolution of the urban form through comparing three samples that typically represent different periods in the history of the city’s formation. These samples are; the traditional neighbourhood represented by the Old Town, and the colonial urban fabric including Italian and British neighbourhoods. The findings will show how the morphology of the traditional and colonial fabrics differ, how the differences modify recurrent spatial relationships and how such modification took place in history, leading to the transformation of two important urban elements; the urban block and street structures. This research argues that rather than extensive transplantation of foreign urban models, it is essential to understand local structural principles and implement them into the design of future developments in order to maintain a sense of continuity and cultural identity while responding to contemporary life requirements.

Abstract:
Arising from the discussion about a sustainable development of the energy sector, more and more interest of different industrial branches (e.g. in the automotive field or by the energy supply companies) is actually directed to the use of fuel cells. They show high degrees of ef-ficiency, little pollution and the ability of combined heat and power generation, and moreover they are modularly built. As a fuel they need hydrogen, but the infrastructure of its supply is much worse than necessary. So, at least for a time of transition, hydrogen must be produced from hydrocarbon fuels. A new idea is the hydrogen production from liquid higher hydrocar-bon compositions, as diesel fuel, in a catalytic cracker. This diesel processor is based on a technology developed by the University of Essen-Duisburg at Duisburg. Liquid higher hydrocarbons, as diesel, also contain different sulfur compounds. The aim of this work was to gain knowledge about the influence of sulfur to a complete catalytic cracker system. The study consists of two parts, the first dealing with the influence of sulfur com-pounds to the catalytic cracker itself, and the second with the influence of the products of the reaction of sulfur compounds flowing with the resultant gas into the low-temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell, PEMFC. In the catalytic cracker the influence of sulfur on the activity and the hydrogen selectivity of catalysts of two different precious metals used separately as well as in mixture is investi-gated. Furthermore, the catalysts stability under the cracking temperature of nearly 1,200 K is tested. As an example, the effect of sulfur-containing fuel to a PEMFC is shown and analysed. Moreover, a mathematical-physical model is developed, describing the effects of the degra-dation of a PEMFC by sulfur contamination. Finally, the efficiency of a desulfurizing unit, pre-connected to the fuel cell to extend its lifetime, is investigated.

Bringmann, Martin. "Identification of novel components that connect cellulose synthases to the cytoskeleton." Phd thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2012. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2012/6147/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on earth and the main load-bearing structure in plant cell walls. Cellulose microfibrils are laid down in a tight parallel array, surrounding plant cells like a corset. Orientation of microfibrils determines the direction of growth by directing turgor pressure to points of expansion (Somerville et al., 2004). Hence, cellulose deficient mutants usually show cell and organ swelling due to disturbed anisotropic cell expansion (reviewed in Endler and Persson, 2011). How do cellulose microfibrils gain their parallel orientation? First experiments in the 1960s suggested, that cortical microtubules aid the cellulose synthases on their way around the cell (Green, 1962; Ledbetter and Porter, 1963). This was proofed in 2006 through life cell imaging (Paredez et al., 2006). However, how this guidance was facilitated, remained unknown. Through a combinatory approach, including forward and reverse genetics together with advanced co-expression analysis, we identified pom2 as a cellulose deficient mutant. Map- based cloning revealed that the gene locus of POM2 corresponded to CELLULOSE SYNTHASE INTERACTING 1 (CSI1). Intriguingly, we previously found the CSI1 protein to interact with the putative cytosolic part of the primary cellulose synthases in a yeast-two-hybrid screen (Gu et al., 2010). Exhaustive cell biological analysis of the POM2/CSI1 protein allowed to determine its cellular function. Using spinning disc confocal microscopy, we could show that in the absence of POM2/CSI1, cellulose synthase complexes lose their microtubule-dependent trajectories in the plasma membrane. The loss of POM2/CSI1, however does not influence microtubule- dependent delivery of cellulose synthases (Bringmann et al., 2012). Consequently, POM2/CSI1 acts as a bridging protein between active cellulose synthases and cortical microtubules. This thesis summarizes three publications of the author, regarding the identification of proteins that connect cellulose synthases to the cytoskeleton. This involves the development of bioinformatics tools allowing candidate gene prediction through co-expression studies (Mutwil et al., 2009), identification of candidate genes through interaction studies (Gu et al., 2010), and determination of the cellular function of the candidate gene (Bringmann et al., 2012).

Abstract:
Aim - The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding in which users of activitytrackers and the connected netforum together construate a learning environment and if and inwhat ways this can be perceived as health promoting.Theoretical framework - The theoretical framework presents the pedagogical perspectiveswhich appeared in the empiric material. The study adresses the following theories andperspectives: the sociocutural perspective, Zone of proximal development, health literacy,Communitites of practice and healthism.Method - The study has a lifeworld phenomenological method. The data collection wascompleted in two different methods. The writers used the activity tracker and net forum togain access to the users life world. A virtual discussion group was created where particapantsand the writers discussed the activity tracker and net forum. Selection: 8 participants fromSweden, Great Britain, Brazil and USA.Result - Health literacy proved to be significant when interpreting the data from the activitytracker. Learning processes occured in the net forum through interaction. Health promotingfactors like increased physical activity level, motivation, inspiration and joy were found bothregarding activity tracker and netforum. Potentially harmful effects on health were found, hyperactivity and an over-reliance to the actvity tracker. Conclusion - Todays selftracking tools are often technically advanced but pedagogicallyinsufficient. Bridges should be built between selftracking tools and the pedagogical processeswhich occur within the individuals using these tools.

Abstract:
Network Creation Games(NCGs) model the creation of decentralized communication networks like the Internet. In such games strategic agents corresponding to network nodes selfishly decide with whom to connect to optimize some objective function. Past research intensively analyzed models where the agents strive for a central position in the network. This models agents optimizing the network for low-latency applications like VoIP. However, with today's abundance of streaming services it is important to ensure that the created network can satisfy the increased bandwidth demand. To the best of our knowledge, this natural problem of the decentralized strategic creation of networks with sufficient bandwidth has not yet been studied. We introduce Flow-Based NCGs where the selfish agents focus on bandwidth instead of latency. In essence, budget-constrained agents create network links to maximize their minimum or average network flow value to all other network nodes. Equivalently, this can also be understood as agents who create links to increase their connectivity and thus also the robustness of the network. For this novel type of NCG we prove that pure Nash equilibria exist, we give a simple algorithm for computing optimal networks, we show that the Price of Stability is 1 and we prove an (almost) tight bound of 2 on the Price of Anarchy. Last but not least, we show that our models do not admit a potential function.

Abstract:
Giving attention to the legal relations in special international public law branch which its existence connects to the biggest part of the Planet, unresearched completely, it is absolutely important for modern way of living. In a period of questioning of boundaries and possibilities of future existence of ancient principles of legitimate rule, we need to pay attention to, at least for a glance, issues which tangle the subjects of legal relations regulated by rules under law of the sea. Lot of people use sea routes, a certain part of population of continental states uses the benefits of the sea although they do not ask themselves about order and way of functioning that huge system which demands obeying rules defined on international level. Struggle to reach an agreement was long and difficult, results are visible and used, and agreed terms and established rules, could be changed. It is important to know certain circumstances, some demands and the essence of the agreement reached. The sea as a road, the source of life, and this time, the source of international rules governing legal order on sea’s surface and endless depths. We will get acquainted with the basics of the law of the sea and some sorts of sea related services. We will consider some problems and ways of solving these problems with the provision of proposed guidelines for future action within the framework of the international law of the sea.

Abstract:
For most construction projects in the water/wastewater field, the first time the design can be validated and shown to actually work is after construction and start-up. It’s not too often that there is an opportunity to prove modeling with real-world results BEFORE improvements are constructed. What better way to see design translate from paper to real-life performance than to build a scale model and run multiple flow trials? This paper presents a case study for the design of primary settling tanks (PST) influent baffles at the Nashville Central WWTP (CWWTP by utilizing hydraulic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and validating results with physical modeling. Physical model results helped gain the plant operations and maintenance (O&M) trust in validating the design and provide the best solution for improvements.

Abstract:
Abstract Recently an autonomous system that meets the growing demand for solving a problem in adiversifying environment has been desired, in order to secure more robustness and flexibility. As a first step towards establishing such an autonomous system, we developed Life Algorithm (LA). Life Algorithm is fundamentally an extension of Genetic Algorithm (GA). While the conventional GA approach is based on genes and is homogeneous in its essence, LA is something more like a genome and realizes more diversity. A group of genes with different evaluation function is considered and these constitute agents. Thus, more individuality and more interaction between these agents can be taken into account and more robustness to cope with the widely and quickly changing environment can be realized. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of an LA approach by illustrating the example of power plant operation through simulation and an experiment of a solar cell system.

Abstract:
The author characterized the Ukrainian national values, national interests and national goals. It is emphasized that national values are conceptual, ideological bases, consolidating factors, important life guidelines on the way to effective protection of Ukraine from Russian aggression and building a democratic, united Ukrainian state. Author analyzes the functioning of the mass media in the context of educational propaganda of individual, social and state values, the dominant core of which are patriotism, human rights and freedoms, social justice, material and spiritual wealth of Ukrainians, natural resources, morality, peace, religiosity, benevolence, national security, constitutional order. These key national values are a strong moral and civic core, a life-giving element, a self-affirming synergy, which on the basis of homogeneity binds the current Ukrainian society with the ancestors and their centuries-old material and spiritual heritage. Attention is focused on the fact that the current problem of building the Ukrainian state and protecting it from the brutal Moscow invaders is directly dependent on the awareness of all citizens of the essence of national values, national interests, national goals and filling them with the meaning of life, charitable socio-political life. It is emphasized that the missionary vocation of journalists to orient readers and listeners to the meaningful choice of basic national values, on the basis of which Ukrainian citizens, regardless of nationality together they will overcome the external Moscow and internal aggression of the pro-Russian fifth column, achieve peace, return the Ukrainian territories seized by the Kremlin imperialists and, in agreement will build Ukrainian Ukraine.

Dalglish, Chris, and Sarah Tarlow, eds. Modern Scotland: Archaeology, the Modern past and the Modern present. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.163.

Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  HUMANITY The Panel recommends recognition that research in this field should be geared towards the development of critical understandings of self and society in the modern world. Archaeological research into the modern past should be ambitious in seeking to contribute to understanding of the major social, economic and environmental developments through which the modern world came into being. Modern-world archaeology can add significantly to knowledge of Scotland’s historical relationships with the rest of the British Isles, Europe and the wider world. Archaeology offers a new perspective on what it has meant to be a modern person and a member of modern society, inhabiting a modern world.  MATERIALITY The Panel recommends approaches to research which focus on the materiality of the recent past (i.e. the character of relationships between people and their material world). Archaeology’s contribution to understandings of the modern world lies in its ability to situate, humanise and contextualise broader historical developments. Archaeological research can provide new insights into the modern past by investigating historical trends not as abstract phenomena but as changes to real lives, affecting different localities in different ways. Archaeology can take a long-term perspective on major modern developments, researching their ‘prehistory’ (which often extends back into the Middle Ages) and their material legacy in the present. Archaeology can humanise and contextualise long-term processes and global connections by working outwards from individual life stories, developing biographies of individual artefacts and buildings and evidencing the reciprocity of people, things, places and landscapes. The modern person and modern social relationships were formed in and through material environments and, to understand modern humanity, it is crucial that we understand humanity’s material relationships in the modern world.  PERSPECTIVE The Panel recommends the development, realisation and promotion of work which takes a critical perspective on the present from a deeper understanding of the recent past. Research into the modern past provides a critical perspective on the present, uncovering the origins of our current ways of life and of relating to each other and to the world around us. It is important that this relevance is acknowledged, understood, developed and mobilised to connect past, present and future. The material approach of archaeology can enhance understanding, challenge assumptions and develop new and alternative histories. Modern Scotland: Archaeology, the Modern past and the Modern present vi Archaeology can evidence varied experience of social, environmental and economic change in the past. It can consider questions of local distinctiveness and global homogeneity in complex and nuanced ways. It can reveal the hidden histories of those whose ways of life diverged from the historical mainstream. Archaeology can challenge simplistic, essentialist understandings of the recent Scottish past, providing insights into the historical character and interaction of Scottish, British and other identities and ideologies.  COLLABORATION The Panel recommends the development of integrated and collaborative research practices. Perhaps above all other periods of the past, the modern past is a field of enquiry where there is great potential benefit in collaboration between different specialist sectors within archaeology, between different disciplines, between Scottish-based researchers and researchers elsewhere in the world and between professionals and the public. The Panel advocates the development of new ways of working involving integrated and collaborative investigation of the modern past. Extending beyond previous modes of inter-disciplinary practice, these new approaches should involve active engagement between different interests developing collaborative responses to common questions and problems.  REFLECTION The Panel recommends that a reflexive approach is taken to the archaeology of the modern past, requiring research into the nature of academic, professional and public engagements with the modern past and the development of new reflexive modes of practice. Archaeology investigates the past but it does so from its position in the present. Research should develop a greater understanding of modern-period archaeology as a scholarly pursuit and social practice in the present. Research should provide insights into the ways in which the modern past is presented and represented in particular contexts. Work is required to better evidence popular understandings of and engagements with the modern past and to understand the politics of the recent past, particularly its material aspect. Research should seek to advance knowledge and understanding of the moral and ethical viewpoints held by professionals and members of the public in relation to the archaeology of the recent past. There is a need to critically review public engagement practices in modern-world archaeology and develop new modes of public-professional collaboration and to generate practices through which archaeology can make positive interventions in the world. And there is a need to embed processes of ethical reflection and beneficial action into archaeological practice relating to the modern past.
