Abstract This chapter describes how the colonies struggled to bring recalcitrant sachems to submit to English dominion while pressuring Indians to sell additional land. Massachusetts repeatedly prevented the colonies from going to war without just grounds, undermining the unity of the United Colonies. When the Pocumtuck War broke out among various Indian communities, it exacerbated the division among the colonies, with Connecticut sympathizing with Uncas and Massachusetts sympathizing with the Narragansetts.
