Mortensen, Tony Paul. "The Concept of Cash: An Empirical Study of Connotative Meaning in Accounting." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Accountancy, Finance and Information Systems, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1940.

Full text
Abstract:
This experimental study investigates the connotative meaning of the concept “cash”, as it relates to the cash flow statement, held by the three key parties to the accounting communication process: preparers, auditors and users. Concerns raised in the accounting profession regarding the susceptibility of the cash flow statement to manipulation, coupled with the recent introduction of NZ IAS 7 (cash flow statement) provide the motivation for investigating the potential for miscommunication (either intentional or unintentional) between the main parties to the financial reporting process. The study investigates inter and intra group differences in measured connotative meaning of the old and new definitions of “cash”, and determines the effect of connotative meaning on decision outcomes. Further, the study considers the overall quality of the two definitions, as perceived by the three financial reporting groups. Three key findings are indicated. The first is that the three financial reporting groups do not share the same cognitive structure in which the meaning of the concept “cash” is held. An important implication is that comparisons between the connotative meanings held by the three financial reporting groups cannot be validly made. Secondly, significant differences in the measured meaning were observed across the two definitions within each of the three subject groups. Thirdly, the decision outcomes for each of the three subject groups were significantly different under the two definitions. Also there was some evidence that the differences in the decision outcomes were linked to the differences in the measured connotative meaning. These results raised several concerns regarding the potential for miscommunication between the three key parties to the accounting communication process and highlighted the importance of standard-setters assessing the effect on connotative meaning of possible changes in wording to key concepts within the cash flow statement.

Marshall, Richard Joseph. "A study of the acquisition of connotative meaning by Japanese speakers of English." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28429.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to discover how well adult Japanese speakers of English had acquired the connotative meanings of 39 selected English animal, bird and colour terms. Seventy subjects from Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan were given three elicitation instruments to complete. On one instrument each subject stated what they believed the connotative meanings of the terms are. On the other two instruments the subjects selected from the choices given the choice which best conveyed the connotative meanings of the terms. Among the more noteworthy findings are: 1. The subjects had acquired very few connotative meanings of the 39 terms. 2. The number of connotative meanings the subjects had acquired varied with semantic field. 3. Older subjects and those who had studied English longer or had resided in an English speaking country had acquired more connotative meanings. 4. Male and female subjects had acquired the same number of connotative meanings. 5. There were inconclusive indications that the subjects transferred connotative meanings from Japanese to English and that context helped the subjects to select the connotative meanings of the selected terms. The major implication of the findings is that unless Japanese speakers of English are explicitly taught connotative meanings there is little likelihood they will acquire many connotative meanings. Therefore it was concluded that efforts must be made to teach Japanese speakers of English connotative meanings.

Williams, Hamish. "The typical and connotative character of Xeinoi situations across the Apologue: Three studies in repetition." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/24448.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation engages in a close reading and analysis of the Apologue of Homer's Odyssey; specifically, I am concerned with characterizing the nature of xeinoi situations or interactions in these books - that is, the relationship between the Ithacan travellers and the various inhabitants whom they encounter in these four books. There is a significant amount of scholarship on the nature of these encounters in the Apologue, and as my first chapter explores, many of these are often hinged upon certain polarities: hospitality versus inhospitality, civilized versus savage, masculine versus feminine. My study is greatly indebted to these; however, this dissertation explores new avenues of interpreting these encounters. I have adopted an approach to the Odyssey, which is based upon the importance of repetitions and their connotations, what has been termed 'traditional referentiality'. The Homeric poems are defined by an aesthetic of repetition: certain 'units' (which may be isolated words, phrases, actions, scenes, etc.) are given prominence in the narrative through their frequency; when these units are examined with respect to their contexts, the particular units gain associative or 'connotative' meaning from their implementation. In my second, third, and fourth chapters, I explore how the xeinoi situations in the Apologue are pervaded by certain typical units - namely, (i) mountains, (ii) acts of eating, and (iii) acts of trickery - and then, importantly, how these units garner connotative senses of, respectively, (i) isolation, (ii) danger, and (iii) success, which characterize the relationships in these four books. While some of these typical units have received scholarly treatment in the Odyssey as a whole, their specific importance to the Apologue has not been studied extensively, nor have the connotative resonances of these repeated units been fully explored. The importance of these connotations is elaborated on in the conclusion, where I examine how the meaning derived from these xeinoi encounters interplays with the surrounding story of the Odyssey.

Abstract:
This essay examines the persuasive side of music and its affect on consumer behavior when utilized in television commercials. It includes an interpretation of twelve study cases, in which three groups of four people is presented the same commercial, with different music being the only item dividing the groups. This is followed by a few questions about the product. The aim is then to see how the answers differ from one group to another, and how they match the music’s presupposed connotations suggested in the theory part of the essay, thus, observing the communicative, and eventually persuasive, power of music in television commercials. The main question is: how might music utilized in a television commercial power people’s opinions about the product in that commercial. The results show how music may alter people’s opinions about the product in the commercial, and that the interviewees’ opinions, in most cases, match the music’s presupposed connotations. The study’s results confirm what was previously found by Adolfsson in 2007. By comparing results from then and now it adds to the understanding of musical meaning in everyday life.

Scallon, Gabrielle. "Cross-sensory correspondences : cross-activation of connotative feature dimensions through the felt heaviness of lifted objects." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2018. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/125613/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cross-sensory correspondences are the systematic associations demonstrated to arise between various feature dimensions such that their relative extremes are aligned. It has been proposed that correspondences arise as a result of cross-talk between abstract, amodal connotations of a core set of feature dimensions (P. Walker, 2016). Although there is some evidence to suggest that a dimension denoting heaviness may be included among a set of aligned feature dimension, the evidence to demonstrate this is limited. The present work explores whether heaviness, as received through the lifting of weighted objects, may enter into this scheme of correspondences. In addition, the separate contributions of the heaviness and size of lifted objects to the cross-activation of other feature dimensions is also considered. The influences of size and heaviness were explored in light of the size-weight illusion; a phenomenon where the size of equally weighted objects alters their felt heaviness such that the smaller object is experienced to be heavier than the larger object. A series of rating scale tasks were conducted, examining whether heaviness can induce predicted correspondences with other feature dimensions. It was demonstrated that heavier objects were consistently aligned with dark and low pitch. Further confirmation for these mappings was sought through a series of speeded classification tasks. The heaviness-brightness mapping was demonstrated to influence response speed in a brightness classification task, where objects varying in heaviness were used as response keys. In both rating scale and speeded classification tasks, the heaviness-brightness correspondence continued to form the basis of cross-sensory interactions despite the potential for a size-brightness correspondence. The present work confirms that cross-activation between dimensions can be accessed through the manipulation of felt objects. What is more, support is provided for a framework of aligned feature dimensions, their conceptual nature and the inclusion of heaviness among this proposed network of dimensions.

Lewis, Kathryn L. "Imaging the Early Cold War: Photographs in Life Magazine, 1945-1954." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3765.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes Life’s early coverage of the Cold War (1945-1954) in order to explicate this publication’s creation and reinforcement of prescriptive attitudes about this ideological engagement through photographically illustrated news. By uncovering Life’s editorial approach this project proposes a new diagnostic for evaluating documentary images by re-configuring Hayden White’s incisive theory of emplotment—the process of engendering historical narratives with meaning— through semiotic models proposed by Louis Hjelmslev and Roland Barthes, thereby offering a useful tool for future scholars to re-examine modern media’s transition towards prizing visual immediacy over critical engagement. Life’s editors’ link narrative devices and rhetoric with photographs to make these images appear as first-hand experience and function as objective conclusions. Life characterizes the Cold War as an epic moral struggle between the US and USSR, and its 1943 special issue on Russia acts as the comedic prologue to this narrative by distinguishing these ideologically disparate wartime allies. After post-war agreements fail, this congenial atmosphere swiftly transitions into another battle between democracy and tyranny, defined through literary conventions. Life employs synecdoche and allegory to encode photographs of individuals as icons of valorous populations (Americans and Eastern Europeans) and to symbolize concepts (democracy and charity). Metonymy and irony transform photographs into direct signs of Communism and visual evidence of its degeneracy. Life’s comic presentation of Marshal Josip Tito contrasts with its satiric coverage of Senator Joseph McCarthy to direct readers’ attention towards the best and worst possible courses of action regarding the Communist menace, at home and abroad.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on style-related challenges that translators may face when translating from German to Swedish. The translated source text stems from the biography Kafka: The Years of Insight. Its literary style and its use of less frequent words make it particularly suitable for a study of the translation of stylistic traits. The essay raises the question whether the style of the source text can be reproduced or not. The analysis is limited to the stylistic aspects of words and includes the area of metaphors and word choice, in particular the translation of foreign words and elevated or archaic style. The study is qualitative and based on Koller's (2011) theory of connotative equivalence and the theories of linguistic and cognitive aspects of metaphors as defined by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Schäffner (2004). The analysis reveals that style-related translation challenges are caused by the limitations of the target language, yet, the translator is expected to reproduce the style of the source text. Thus, this essay argues that translation has more to do with recreating the style of the source text. This goes against the general view that the style of the target text is merely a reproduction of the source text.

Abstract:
The present study was undertaken (1) to compare the connotative meanings criminals attach to a sampling of concepts with those meanings attached by noncriminals, and (2) to examine the possible relationship between moral development and criminal behavior. One hundred thirty four male subjects completed the Wide Range Achievement Test- Revised (Reading Section); a personal data sheet; the Ammons Quick Test-Form I; the Criminal Semantic Inventory; the Test for Criminal Cognitions; and the Sociomoral Reflection Questionnaire. Subjects were divided into four groups (Noncriminals, Against Person Group, Against Property Group, and Against Statute Group) on the basis of history of criminal conviction. A one-way MANOVA was conducted on each of the 16 concepts under investigation. Significant differences were found for five concepts. In addition, criminals were found to differ significantly from noncriminals on level of moral development.

Wecksteen-Quinio, Corinne. "Traduction et connotation." Artois, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005ARTO0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this doctoral dissertation is to study the translation of connotation. It begins with a general survey of connotation as it has been used in fields such as logic, linguistics and semiotics. Emphasis is laid on the importance of connotation for the construction of meaning, itself a multifaceted and multidisciplinary concept. This research is motivated and justified by the lack of a wide ranging and systematic treatment of the notion in translation studies. The approach is based on the examination of an extensive English-French corpus of contemporary literary texts and it takes into account the notions of variability, subjectivity, ambiguity and implicitness. The study of translation strategies proper is duly preceded by an attempt to define the markers of connotation; Stress is placed on the intrinsic variability of connotation and on the importance of the translator as a person, with subjectivity this necessarily entails. Connotation is viewed as a form of variation which paves the way for a stylistic and sociolinguistic study involving not only registers but accents and dialects. This highlights the fact that the translator has to comply with certain writing constraints but that he also has some leeway as co-author of the target text. Ambiguity is then taken as a thematic link for the analysis of the humorous connotations conveyed by wordplay and for the study of the connotative shifts at work when languages come into contact, as exemplified by calques and loanwords. The last section is devoted to the study of implicitness, in connection with the translation of cultural connotations, and especially onomastics, cultural references and allusions

Abstract:
Published Article
Change in the world is reflected in almost every aspect of our lives – how we live, eat, communicate, etc. For reasons of authentication the mass media use real people in real life settings to convince real people to buy or use a product or service. For this reason it can be argued that the mass media (especially advertisements) offer a particular view of society. It is within such a specific system of belief that the mass media sell certain desires. Without a specific system of belief it is not possible to sell certain desires, for example: fitness (not sport shoes), beauty (not lipstick), etc. This view of the world offered by advertisements is unique to this genre and therefore the advertising genre can be identified, with its unique characteristics and conventions, within the bigger media world. Concepts such as morality, values and desire lead to the concept myth which forms the focus of this research. The focus of this research was to identify the meaningful denotative and connotative signs in print advertisements given the expected reaction of the target market; to identify the desires being sold in print advertising messages on the basis of the meaningful denotative and connotative signs and finally to identify the marketing myths forming the basis for selling the abovementioned desires.

Raber, Rebecca Lynn. "Conducting the Coded Message Songs of Slavery: Context, Connotation, and Performance Preparation." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/28976.

Full text
Abstract:
The coded message songs of slavery are a mysterious and fascinating entity. Within the lyrics of these seemingly innocuous plantation songs are coded messages for escape, messages that provided secret information to enslaved workers on Antebellum plantations. Over the course of more than 250 years of slavery on American soil, countless enslaved Africans found freedom through the use of coded message songs and the Underground Railroad. What are these songs? Which lyrics provided this secret information? How can a study of this music provide a better musical experience for conductors, singers, and listeners? This disquisition offers answers to these important questions, as well as a presentation of this body of repertoire from the choral conductor?s perspective. First, I provide a brief historical context for the music of slavery. I analyze and interpret important historical collections of spirituals and examine them through the lens of their text. Period accounts (from newly freed slaves and by song collectors) as well as information from modern conductors and scholars provide insight into and support for my method. A discussion of textual interpretation and musical representation follows, including a valuable list of common themes used in coded message songs. In the main body of the document, I present nine spirituals that contain coded message. I focus on the lyrics of the coded songs, introducing the connotations of the messages within the music. I also offer insight to choral conductors considering this repertoire and some interpretive choices that may be made when performing this music. Finally, this study contributes appendices with concrete pedagogical resources to assist conductors in their teaching and presentation of coded message songs to their singers. Successful choral conductors are dynamic storytellers. As a conductor preparing, rehearsing, and performing this choral music, it is critical to both communicate the context and history of coded message songs during the learning process, and also make appropriate stylistic choices in the music. Revealing the historical context and rich textual interpretation of this body of repertoire allows conductors to tell this story more effectively through their informed pedagogy, ultimately enriching and inspiring both singers and listeners.

Segal, Denise Erica. "The development of the meaning of non-ostensive words in a group of primary school children." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004917.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to investigate word meaning and its development in primary school children (6-12 years) . It was argued that the learning and development of the meanings of words such as pain cannot be primarily explained by means of ostensive definition. Furthermore, existing theories of word meaning which deal predominantly with substantive words fail to account for the learning of non-ostensive words. The pertinent psychological, linguistic and developmental psycholinguistic approaches to word meaning are reviewed briefly. The prototype approaches to word meaning are modified to apply to non-ostensive words . The focus is on conceptual meaning, that is, the way in which the senses of a word alter in different contexts. It is argued that the meaning of the word is its use in a diversity of linguistic contexts. The term "grammar" is applied in a unique way to encompass the meaning of the word (which stems in part from the words with which it co-occurs) as well as its selective use with other words in the language. Ninety-five metalinguistically-phrased tasks comprising short questions and picture-story sequences were analyzed in depth. The tasks were administered individually. A flexible interview afforded additional probing for each question. The analysis comprised percentage scores of responses at different age levels together with verbatim transcripts and qualitative descriptions: Uniformity, variation and developmental trends were found on different tasks for any particular word. Developmental trends were noted in children's understanding of particular words (for example, same), thereby extending the findings of previous researchers. There was evidence for a progression in children's ability to take into consideration that a word alters its sense according to the linguistic context in which it occurs (for example, same as it relates to chair versus dress versus pain). A comprehensive account of the words meaning could be established when a diversity of tasks was applied for each word. Children of different age levels employed different strategies in answering the questions posed. A model is proposed to describe the development of the meaning of non-ostensive words during the primary school years. It is suggested that psycholinguistic studies on word meaning be re-evaluated and that language and reading programmes incorporate the notion of "grammar". Application of this approach to the study of substantive word meaning in preschool children has important implications for theories of word meaning and for therapeutic intervention.

Abstract:
This essay aims to analyse how the exposedness is constructed in the Swedish contemporary artist Nathalie Djurberg’s two stop motion-films Greed and Cave. Five stills from Greed and three stills from Cave will be examined from a feminist perspective with a theoretical viewpoint based on theories from both art history and film studies. The method applied is visual semiotics which focuses on how meaning is created within an artwork rather than what the meaning is. The stills from Djurberg’s films are analysed first on a denotative level and then on a connotative level. Furthermore, visual semiotics theorises that everything is made up of systems of signs which allows this essay to study how the women in Djurberg’s movies functions as signs. The essay demonstrated that the women in Djurberg’s films can be seen as passive objects under the power of the male gaze. However, the analysis also displayed that the woman in Cave can be perceived as someone who defies the patriarchal norms for how a woman should behave and look. Nonetheless, the exposedness of these women seems to be constructed firstly in their bodies and how they are represented, both in looks but also how they are posed to reinforce patriarchal conventions in the female representation, and secondly in their relation to male characters - or the implied male gaze from a spectator - in the films. The women in Djurberg’s films can thus be understood as signs for male sexual desires, as signs for the Woman posing as the Man’s opposite, as the objective for His gaze.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns six Swedish paintings depicting sick or convalescent individuals; Richard Bergh’s Konvalescent (unfinished, 1886), Flickan och Döden (1888), Eva Bonnier’s Magdalena (1887), Gustaf Magnusson’s Konvalescent (1933), Jenny Nyström’s Konvalescenten (1884), and Georg Pauli’s Vid sjukbädden (1885). The purpose of this study is to examine how sickness is portrayed and staged using performative theory and visual semiotics. The thesis takes into account that tuberculosis, being a widespread disease during the 18th and 19th Century, made it a topic of exploration in the contemporary art. With this as the framework the thesis examines whether or not it is possible to diagnose the depicted individuals. The results shows that sickness first and foremost is portrayed and staged in signs regarding the body: the face, the hands, and how the body is posed. Lastly, it is suggested that these artworks can be seen as cultural symbols of TB, since not being viable for a strictly medicinal diagnosis they are more the result of the contemporary need to examine TB and its effects on society and culture. The paintings becomes – such as a body is a vessel for a disease – vessels for the disease culturally speaking.

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 3, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA030023.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a study of various linguistic processes used by the speakers of Lama (a Gur language spoken in Togo) to express their emotions. The data analyzed here come from a first-hand corpus collected during fieldwork in Kantè (Togo). It consists of thirty hours of recorded spontaneous and natural discourse, collected in public places such as markets, places of leisure activities, or cultural events, sometimes through unplanned recordings, sometimes through note-taking. It is found that emotion can be expressed in three modes of expression : denotation, connotation and inference. These modes of expression highlight a diversity of resources and strategies : vocabulary related to emotions, lexical and syntactic markers charged with emotional connotations, metaphors accounting for the conceptualization of emotions, construction of emotion by discursive schematization of a situation or by the establishment of ethos and pathos in discourse, etc. Examination of these processes shows that there is no marking specific to the language of emotion in Lama. It also appears from this study that the manifestation of emotion is not codified by social norms. The comparison of Lama with other languages through numerous examples reveals similarities and differences in the way emotions are expressed, both linguistically and culturally. Emotional expression in Lama is thus at once universal and culture-specific

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate how subjects who have had a right hemisphere stroke process connotative and denotative meanings of words. Nineteen subjects with right hemisphere stroke (RHS) and nineteen normal subjects were given a word-dyad task where they had to decide whether or not there was a semantic relationship between two words. The word-dyad task involved three types of semantic relationships, metaphoric, associate of the primary non-metaphoric meaning and no semantic relationships, which are constructed by adjectives and nouns. We examined the differences between subjects' performance on each semantic relationship task. Results revealed that RHS subjects are comparable with normal subjects on judging all semantic relationships. Furthermore, there is a medium positive correlation between cognitive and the processing of connotative and denotative meaning of words. Besides, the behavior observations of subjects with RHS are discussed. The absense of a double dissociation between the two groups does not support the hypothesis of a specific contribution of the right hemisphere to the processing of the metaphoric meaning of words.

Full text
Abstract:
Typefaces contain explicit and implicit character in their appearance. They are valuable to the designer to convey an appropriate rhetorical voice. Typefaces can be powerful expressions for the persona of user groups and their specialized information. This interpretive exploratory study looked at design as research. Textual data was collected from several sources that revealed typeface trends. As a precedent, Helvetica and Times used on National Park plans forecasted Parks Canada’s preference for Helvetica Neue as the current display font family. The second case study revealed several recurrent typefaces used for titles and headings on Canadian Society of Landscape Architects’ professional journals. Lastly, survey data about landscape architects’ current typeface preferences showed a trend for certain styles and persistent connotations. The personality and physical characteristics of these preferences were synthesized into design guidelines and a typeface concept. This representative landscape architecture typeface is intended to promote professional salience and unity.
The continuity of this thesis will generate a digital design resulting in the release of a typeface taking approximately two years. The author will engage with professionals within landscape architecture and typography to ensure that the typeface development and assessment is holistic and fulfills the recommendations outlined by the key informant and popular literature.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis analyses the occurrence of synonymy in the texts of academic prose and fiction. The topic of synonymy has been in the centre of attention for a long time and it still deserves much attention. The aim of this thesis is to approach to the topic from a different perspective. Theoretical part describes the theoretical background of synonymy from the upper layers of the system of language. These theories are used as analytical tool in analysing the collected samples with the focus on similarities and differences in connotation of pairs of synonyms. The diploma thesis should particularly contribute to study of partial synonymy and the components of associative meaning that vary in dependence on functional style. This thesis should also marginally refer to the topic of absolute synonymy. The frequency of the components of associative meaning and findings are described in the conclusion of the thesis.

Since the idea of separation has been mentioned by Baron de Montesquieu to prevent government power or politica strength violate the neutralization and independence of judicial power, human society also extend this idea to the concept of crininal law. For example, modern criminal law scholars realized through medival period’s situation that, if we allow government carry out penalty with out any limitation, the disadventage was significantly more then the adventage that we possible gain. Moreover, the although the human soceity might keep harmonic or peaceful, but human’s dignity would be set in a instable situation. Therefor, the principle of "nulla poena sine lege"; the principle of legality has benn mentioned.Besides, as the humen rithgs protection has been arisen, it also induce the government power selfrestrain it’s punishment power, especialy thoes official who direcly in charge of sentence to punishment. As a result, the principle of legality and selfrestrain is the fundation stone of the modern criminal. Due to this, if we hope to achieve the best result that might be carrying out by the two principles, we still need go through legal methodology in a conscientious and careful way. Therefore, the objective and analyzable theory of「Die Lehre vom Verbrechen」 will be formed. The sociology and criminology has showed, the definition of crime is a behavior of anti-society and violates other people’s social life benefit. So it clearly point out that criminal law must consider suspect’s illegal mind and responsibility judgment as to build a well structure criminal law to sentence reasonable punishment. This request also make the commentary of criminal law became more subjective and formality. The responsibility of criminal law is very different from illegal mind which is judged objectively, the responsibility of criminal law is always attribution of responsibility for the offense as the perpetrator subjective in nature. Therefore, on the judgement of Tatbestand which is just by the perpetrator's mental state to be refined. But the connotation of responsibility is only to be obtained from the specification of requirements to obtain , or involve other actors behavior patterns to be observed , for example, as members of society should abide by the principle of self-discipline , everyone becomes an element of criminal law responsibility should enrich the connotation . This article departure from the connotation of responsibility principle , the responsibility to review the meaning and norms , social relations , and again back reflection , and the construction of the criminal law liability connotation.

Global economy has been booming since the industrial revolution started. The development of economy within 100 years makes human’s life quality much better. However, it also causes severely global warming and climate change. Taiwan had ever created a remarkable miracle on economy development. However, to avoid improper exploitation and environment destruction, the impetus of sustainable engineering is quite essential. According to the information provided by Ministry of The Interior ABRI, CO2 emissions from Taiwan’s construction industry account for a quarter of the country’s total emissions. Therefore, as a leader of all industries, the workers of construction industry must improve their existing ideas toward engineering, engage in research and implementation, and even take life cycle into consideration when doing engineering. In recent years, many countries have set relevant policies to solve the problems of global warming. After promoting Green Label, Taiwan also released “Eco-city Green Building Program”, “Energy Saving & Carbon Reduction White Paper”, and other programs in 2008. In addition, our government also engaged in promoting “Economy Revitalization and Public Construction Investment Plan”. This plan mentions about the connotation of green. Nevertheless, it only shows us the principles and do not have definite explanation. Moreover, researchers also do not have a common consensus about how to implement and assess “Green Connotation”. As a result, this research is started from road engineering and aim at finding a feasible strategy to solve this problem. In this research, literature review is done, and 41 domestic cases and 42 foreign cases of sustainable road are collected. Based on the information, I find the items conform to “green connotation” and the items have to be considered on designing stage of road engineering. Besides, to gain the agreement from the experts, I do the evaluation by FDM to see if each item is proper enough. Through the opinion shared by the experts who is engaged in road engineering planning and green content verification, the green connotation items are completely set up, including 24 indexes and 57 items. And I hope this completion can help people to assess if the road engineering reach green connotation standard. Furthermore, I hope this research can also be a sample for our government to set up a unanimous standard and help our government to promote sustainable development successfully.

Since the implementation of Administrative Penalty Act, three legislative purposes namely “administrative efficiency”, “protection of human rights” and “completion of administrative legal system” have been reached preliminarily. For the consideration of actual legislation circumstances, the approved Administrative Penalty Act still can be improved, especially for the confirmation of administrative penalty, which is critical involving whether to adopt the said law or not. First of all, there is ambiguity existed while defining “administrative penalty” as “administrative order penalty”, which is different from “penal punishment”, “disciplinary punishment” and “administrative implementation method”. Secondarily, although types of administrative penalties only include “fines”, “forfeiture” and “other types of administrative penalties”, yet the last type comprises of four categories and obviously overlaps with “non-punishment unbeneficial administrative disposition”. Though lawmakers set “adverse actions of a punitive nature” as the judgmental standard, yet “punitive” itself is an uncertain legal definition, which is hard to define. Last, too many administrative penalty measures and types could result in difficulties of comparison on measurement of penalty and further affect enforcement and design fairness of some provisions of Administrative Penalty Act. Titled as “Research on the Concept and Connotation of Administrative Penalty”, this article tries to resolve the above-mentioned issues related to confirmation of administrative penalty. Chapter One “Preface” illustrates the motivation, objective, scope and approach of the research. Chapter Two “The Meaning of Administrative Penalty” classifies and analyzes the meaning of administrative penalty, judgment standard, administrative penalty and other punishments or distinction of unfavorable measures. Chapter Three “The Types and Measures of Administrative Penalty” introduces fines, forfeiture and other types of administrative penalties, and also analyzes individual case disputes. Chapter Four “Judgment Beneficial of Administrative Penalty” discusses about the relative principles of administrative penalty that shall be applied, the principle of explicit authorization. Chapter Five “Advantages and Disadvantages of Administrative Penalty Type in our nation’s Administrative Penalty Act” further reviews stipulations currently in force from the level of legislation form and implementation. It also sheds lights on revising direction of administrative penalty measures and types through the types of administrative penalty legislation in other countries, and proposes legislation suggestion and feasible program in order to clarify the definition and connotation and resolve the foregoing issues. Chapter Six “Conclusion and Suggestions” briefly concludes all contents above in each chapter for reference of administrative penalty revising or further academic research.
