We have studied the influence of Δ8-sterols on the activity of glucan synthase I, the protein synthetizing the main polymer in fungal cell walls, its regulation by the Cell Wall Integrity (CWI) pathway, and its transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the plasma membrane. AbstractFor several decades, a debate has been waged over how to interpret the significance of fossils from the Burgess Shale and Cambrian Explosion. Stephen Jay Gould argued that if the “tape of life” was rerun, then the resulting lineages would differ radically from what we find today, implying that humans are a happy accident of evolution. Simon Conway Morris argued that if the “tape of life” was rerun, the resulting lineages would be similar to what we now observe, implying that intelligence would still emerge from an evolutionary process. Recent methodological innovations in paleontological practice call into question both positions and suggest that global claims about the history of life, whether in terms of essential contingency or predictable convergence, are unwarranted.

Abstract:
The subject of the intervention, a curious example of Italian-Spanish translingualism of the late 16th Century, the tragedy La Reyna Matilda, written in Naples in Spanish by an Italian writer, Giovanni Domenico Bevilacqua, secretary of the Prince of Conca, Matteo di Capua, and preserved in a single, very rare Neapolitan edition of 1597. It necessarily precedes a brief overview of the other few previously printed works by the author, all in Italian, including the renown octave-rhyme translation of the De raptu Proserpinae by Claudiano. Set in the city of Tarragona at the time of Reconquista, the fabula ficta is characterized by the contamination of tragic plot and novelistic themes, the representation and exaltation of Spanish values and customs, with some reflections of contemporary Neapolitan reality, the pietistic and edifying motivations. Through detailed findings, both formal and intertextual, the analysis focuses, in particular, on the debts that the tragedy has, even before the contemporary Spanish developments of the genre, towards the 16th Century Italian tragic grammar, along the entire arc of its codification, from Trissino’s Sofonisba to Tasso’s Re Torrismondo.

Abstract:
Abstract The modern university has the potential to turn into a nexus of digital embracement and innovation, thus responding to both strategic planning for higher education and societal demands. Priorities in digitalisation strategies (White Paper ‘Bologna Digital 2020’, Rampelt et al. 2019) for higher education institutions (HEIs) are actively promoted, and their implementation is in progress throughout Europe. However, the embedding of the digitalisation reform at the institutional level is considerably uneven from one country to another, with Eastern European HEIs lagging behind (Conrads et al. 2017). The aim of this position paper is to present and discuss the case of digital humanities (DH) as an incentive for digitalisation strategies at Eastern European universities. We briefly contextualize the configuration of DH initiatives in the region by using the results of the Digital Humanities Survey and propose the case study of Romania, where we investigate the implementation status of such initiatives. We further exemplify the process of developing a DH centre and evaluate the institutional impact of the recently created research centre CODHUS, from the West University of Timişoara, Romania, the second DH centre in the country. The strength of the new centre relies on its capacity to converge cross-disciplinary expertise with digital technologies. The centre intends to develop computational solutions and digital tools for research, course development and assessment. CODHUS is also a digital-competence training centre for teachers and students, with the purpose of bridging the gap between teaching strategies and goals, on one hand, and students’ digital experiences and expectations from HEI, on the other. The study offers a multiple-lens perspective on the integration of digital-intensive research initiatives, such as DH, into the Bologna process. We argue that DH centres can support further HE developments which contribute to building “new learning ecologies” (Galvis 2018) and creating an “education area with digital solutions” (Rampelt 2019).

Abstract:
This chapter considers points of intersection between Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o and Joseph Conrad. By Ngũgĩ’s own account, his rewriting of Conrad’s Under Western Eyes (1911) as A Grain of Wheat (1967) triggered a crisis of audience that ultimately led him to abandon English for his native Gikuyu. To further complicate the question of influence, Wollaeger also examines the relationship between two works of nonfiction: Conrad’s A Personal Record (1912) and Ngũgĩ’s Decolonizing the Mind (1986). At the heart of Ngũgĩ’s attempt to fashion premodern tribalism into a utopian space are two problems that still animate critical discussion. What is the status of the local and the indigenous? Does attention to influence reinstate a center-periphery model in postcolonial criticism? This chapter shows the extent to which Conrad and Ngũgĩ both anticipate and generate theoretical models later used to articulate modernism and postcolonialism as fields of inquiry.

Abstract:
The relationship between Casement and Conrad has long fascinated many, with W.G. Sebald fictionalising their meeting in The Rings of Saturn (1998) as part of the text’s engagement with Conrad’s novella and archival trail. For Sebald, Casement galvanises a set of interlinked preoccupations: the catastrophes of modernity, state-sponsored violence, the fragility of memory and the unavoidable spectre of history. Tracing the dialogue between these two works - embodied by Casement’s ghost - enables us to read the metamodernist aesthetics of Sebald as a form of ghostly intertextual memory, indicative of the post-imperial debris that continues to haunt our contemporary moment. Reading Heart of Darkness through The Rings of Saturn opens up both texts in enabling, fruitful ways; just as reading Casement through Conrad’s archive provides us with novel ways of reading the two men and Conrad’s work.

Abstract:
Chapter One is a study of Joseph Conrad’s first novel, Almayer’s Folly, and it concentrates on the first two words of the novel, neither of which are in English. The chapter approaches the novel through the filters of these words’ racial and colonial sound effects, which become a basis for reappraising canonical tropes of voice in narrative theory, media theory, and the phenomenology of reading. Conrad’s novelistic writing becomes critical when read in relation to emergent sound technologies, the phonograph and ethnography, both of which simultaneously depended on the oral while superseding it through a different mode of technological mediation. But the novel, as a form, only becomes a “modern” technology of voice in its discovery of free indirect discourse, which is premised upon an exclusion of the colonial sonic traces of sexual violence. The chapter concludes with Chantal Akerman’s adaptation of Conrad using lip-sync as a postcolonial strategy.

Abstract:
An Outcast of the Islands and The Rescue share a fictional and historical story world. A fundamental difference emerges against the backdrop of this resemblance. Grounded in a conceptualization of time that originates in antiquity, the first novel is obsessed with measurement and accounting. The Rescue is more neatly squared with modern philosophy and its attempt to conceive a time that preexists numerical evaluation. The two ontologies of time find their narrative expression in two distinct plot designs. The first hinges on action, the second, inaction. Deviating from the conventions of emplotting we find in earlier works, the late novel presents a time of suspension and waiting, a time out of joint. For philosophy and narratology both, such a transition marks an attempt to think outside determinism and court the indeterminate—to think the new.

Abstract:
This two-part chapter initially places Hardy and Conrad within the context of later nineteenth-century scientific conceptions of ‘Nature’. Both writers are shown in their letters and essays as equivalently committed to facing indifferent nature in a manner similar to leading contemporary scientists and cultural thinkers. However, in their search for ‘underlying’ truths both authors exhibit a powerful strain of subjective idealism which is entwined with the materialist and objective writing largely claimed for them in this study. The second half of the chapter explores the similarities and equivalences in how, with a fidelity to mood and sensation, Hardy and Conrad ‘face nature’ in their richly descriptive writing. Their ‘peculiar relation to realism’ is seen to value a sentience that is more comprehensive in scope and less cerebral than the human consciousness depicted by other nineteenth-century realist writers.

Two types of contra-rotating stages are considered; the first uses guide vanes and the second is vaneless. A Counter-Rotating System (CRS) is composed of a front rotor and a rear rotor which rotates in the opposite direction. Compared with traditional rotor-stator system, the rear rotor is used not only to recover the static head but also to supply energy to the fluid. Therefore, to achieve the same performance, the use of a CRS may lead to a reduction of the rotational speed and may generate better homogeneous flow downstream of the stage. On the other hand, the mixing area in between the two rotors induces complicated interacting flow structures. Blade sweep has attracted the turbomachinery blade

Air Turbo Rocket engines, suitable for high-speed propulsion, require compact turbomachinery. This paper presents the design of an innovative multi-stage turbine mounted at the hub of a counter-rotating fan. Hence, the turbine airfoils are required to deliver high torque at low peripheral speeds. The design methodology specifically developed for this fourteen-stage turbine relies on two successive optimization cycles. The first one is based on a through-flow 1D code. This optimization cycle explores a vast set of possible design solutions. In a second step, an optimization using a 3D high fide
