Women’s engagement in warfare has been offered as requisite to the eradication of gender hierarchy. Their presumed non-involvement in combat has been presented as an indication of lower status. Both views are critiqued in this article. In kinship societies, women’s engagement in warfare is discussed. The relationship of warfare to social authority is considered in the context of class formative, and often colonial, pressures. Warfare in precapitalist state societies is considered as one form of labor service or conscript labor. Women’s engagement or non-involvement in state-sponsored warfare i

Economic studies of military manpower systems emphasize the advantages of voluntarism under all but the most total threats, but this explains neither the persistence of institutionalized conscription in many states nor the timing of shifts from such conscription systems to volunteer militaries. Traditional explanations focus on external threat levels, but this has also proven unsatisfying. We theorize that threat variables establish the state’s baseline need for manpower, but structural economic variables determine whether the necessary manpower can be more efficiently obtained by conscription

Analysis of the stature and body mass of men from the Kingdom of Poland who were drafted into the 1913/14 Russian army finds that Christians and Jews born in Warsaw were taller than their counterparts from small towns and villages. However, conscripts from Warsaw had less body mass than did conscripts from rural regions; the body mass index (bmi) of a significant proportion of the Warsaw contingent indicates nutritional deficiency. The difference in stature between inhabitants of Warsaw and those of the provinces is attributable to the dietary advantages of the urban environment. The higher bm

In the decades of transition from conscript to professional armed forces, a number of unforeseen issues arose for the armed forces. One of the unresolved, but the most important and worrisome among them, is how the armed forces can attract and retain motivated personnel from the open labour market to fill the vacancy vacuum. Based on conducted research on the motivation of military personnel, the article examines a model for attracting them in the armed forces, analysing each of the elements that make it up and the interrelationships between them. The degree of development of specialist positions associated with large-scale construction at the Maya site of Copan, Honduras, is evaluated. The methodology used involves the quantification of energy, in human labor, which was expended in the construction of Str. 10L-22, a major palace in the Main Center of Copan. The results suggest that few specialists were required, and that the vast majority of construction personnel were unspecialized conscripts.
