Abstract:
Since consecutive interpreting is usually needed in the settings with real- life communication and has a highly communicative nature, the Communicative approach with its wide range of techniques, activities and exercises can be widely applied for its teaching. This article aims at suggesting practical exercises for teaching consecutive interpreting using elements of the Communicative Approach. Aspects of correlation between the main key features of the Communicative approach and consecutive interpreting are considered and taken into account for such exercises as audio description, paraphrasing and interpretation, prioritizing information, practicing anticipation, imitation of intonation and tone. The suggested exercises can be used during online or real classroom lessons.

Abstract:
This article explores late antique Christian conceptualizations of the authorship and transmission of Proverbs in selected works of biblical interpretation preserved in Syriac. In Prov 25:1, the Judean king Hezekiah and his friends are described as writing or transmitting proverbs by Solomon. The article argues that to late antique interpreters, Hezekiahs involvement did not raise questions about the authenticity or attribution of Proverbs but rather about its textual history. It is shown how they used the figure of Hezekiah to develop different views on the production and transmission of Proverbs. Commentators presented the book of Proverbs as the result of consecutive compositional practices, in which selecting, ordering, salvaging, and restoring played central roles.

Abstract:
In this paper we analyse antecedent and free consecutives. In consecutives with overt antecedents, we adopt the split degree hypothesis of Corver (1993, 1997a, b 2013), which has the advantage of separating determiner-like degree word and quantifier-like words. We also adopt Kennedy’s (1997, 1999) and Corver’s (2013) hypotheses that consecutive CPs are adjuncts that act as modifiers of a DegP, which form a unit with the degree/quantifying word at the level of LF. This analysis is extended to free consecutive clauses. We claim that in free consecutives the gradable expression is an elided constituent included in the sentence that contains the consecutive CP, whose content must be recovered by (an element of) the sentence to which it is paratactically related.

Abstract:
Objective This study was to examine characteristics concerning frequent users of emergency medical services (EMS) transport by comparing patients who used EMS transport frequently for one year and those who used EMS transport for more than two years consecutively. Methods A retrospective review for frequent use of EMS transport was conducted. The patients from the fire stations that transported more than 70% of all EMS transport to the study hospital emergency department (ED) were included. The study subjects were divided into consecutive group (frequent EMS transport for ≥ two years consecutively) and non-consecutive group (frequent EMS transport for only one year). Characteristics of patients who were frequent users of EMS transport and those of all cases with EMS transport were examined. Results Of the total 205 patients and 1204 cases of frequent EMS transport, 85 (42%) patients and 755 (63%) cases were in the consecutive group. Patients in the consecutive group were more likely to have risky alcohol use, unemployed state, and medical aid type of payment for ED treatment than those in the non-consecutive group. More patients had previous experience of EMS transport to the study hospital ED in the consecutive group and the number of cases with alcohol ingestion was higher in the consecutive group. Elapsed time from EMS call to ED arrival was longer for the consecutive group. Conclusion Risky alcohol use, unemployed state, and previous experience of EMS transport were associated with consecutive and frequent use of EMS transport in frequent users of EMS transport.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND: Techniques for achieving hemispheric disconnection in patients with epilepsy continue to evolve. OBJECTIVE: To review the outcomes of the first 50 hemispherectomy surgeries performed by a single surgeon with an emphasis on outcomes, complications, and how these results led to changes in practice. METHODS: The first 50 hemispherectomy cases performed by the lead author were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Patient demographics, surgical details, clinical outcomes, and complications were critically reviewed. RESULTS: From 2004 to 2012, 50 patients underwent hemispherectomy surgery (mean follow-up time, 3.5 years). Modified lateral hemispherotomy became the preferred technique and was performed on 44 patients. Forty patients (80%) achieved complete seizure freedom (Engel I). Presurgical and postsurgical neuropsychological evaluations demonstrated cognitive stability. Two cases were performed for palliation only. Previous hemispherectomy surgery was associated with worsened seizure outcome (2 of 6 seizure free; P .005). The use of Avitene was associated with a higher incidence of postoperative hydrocephalus (56% vs 18%; P = .03). In modified lateral hemispherotomy patients without the use of Avitene, the incidence of hydrocephalus was 13%. Complications included infection (n = 3), incomplete disconnection requiring reoperation (n = 1), reversible ischemic neurological deficit (n = 1), and craniosynostosis (n = 1). There were no (unanticipated) permanent neurological deficits or deaths. Minor technique modifications were made in response to specific complications. CONCLUSION: The modified lateral hemispherotomy is effective and safe for both initial and revision hemispherectomy surgery. Avitene use appears to result in a greater incidence of postoperative hydrocephalus.

Abstract:
In an attempt to meet the undeniable need for an empirical approach to interpretation research, this paper suggests an approach to consecutive interpretation learning, based on the observation of recurrent and persistent errors among learners. Although traditional teaching methods will not be discredited, this paper aims to show that since consecutive interpretation requires a personal effort of creation, both students and teachers can be encouraged to more frequently adopt learning and teaching strategies based on self-management, autonomy and self-directed work. After setting out a general framework based on what has been said and written about interpretation teaching methods, we describe how the experiment was conducted. The data collected is analysed and the concept of autonomy and its possible application to consecutive interpretation learning are discussed. On the basis of the findings, and recognising that learning consecutive interpretation requires a personal approach, alternative learning strategies will be proposed which are based on a more autonomous approach on the part of the student. In spite of the inevitable limits of such a small-scale study, it could be suggested that given the recurrence and persistence of certain errors, learners might hope to reduce them by self-observation and by developing autonomous learning strategies according to their needs and experiences.

Abstract:
Relatively small number of gymnasts participate at the Olympic Games and even smaller number participates at Olympic Games consecutively, due to numerous different reasons. Therefore, this paper aims are: 1) to determine the number of female gymnasts who participated in the C-I competition at Olympic Games held in 2012 and at Olympic Games held in 2016; 2) to determine characteristics and differences in results of consecutive participants at these two Olympic Games; 3) to determine differences between consecutive participants and other competitors at the afore defined competitions. It was found that 25 female gymnasts participated at two consecutive Olympic Games. From one to another Olympic Games, consecutive participants have numerically increase all scores; significantly increased Execution and Final Scores on the uneven bars; significantly decrease Execution and Final Score on the balance beam. Compared to other gymnasts from the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, consecutive participants had numerically higher values in all variables, but only some of them have been determined as significantly different. Consecutive participants confirmed the possibility of continuous quality of skills development in mid 20s.

Abstract:
All aspects of human life rely on the most important cognitive ability that man has been endowed with, namely, memory. Some cognitive tasks such as consecutive interpreting put high demands on this powerful ability to the effect that it needs special training to cope with those demands. The interpreter is required to perform a number of complex cognitive activities in order to transpose the original message from one socio-cultural environment into another. Unless his memory is able to perform well, his task will be adversely affected. In this paper, an attempt is made to suggest a number of steps that provide special training to novice interpreters with the aim of improving the performance of their memory. This is done in a preparatory training course that does not involve consecutive interpreting but working from and into the same language. If the instructor manages to help the trainee overcome memory problems in advance, he can smoothly introduce him to the process and strategies of consecutive interpretation proper. The steps suggested proceed over three phases: (1) attentive listening, meaningful analysis and visualizing, (2) anticipation and note-taking, and (3) rephrasing.

Abstract:
Abstract Given the lack of sensitization to the multi-dimensional concept of quality, and given the versatility of the concept of relevance, the present investigation attempts to examine the premise that Relevance Theory (RT) can function as a standard or a benchmark for maximizing and/or optimizing quality in CI. Whilst the theoretical part relies heavily on Ernst-August Gutt’s seminal work Translation and Relevance: Cognition and Context (2000), the practical part draws on some empirical data obtained from trainee-interpreters’ recorded sessions at the Hashemite University (Jordan) in order to provide a relevance-driven account for some semantic, syntactic, and cultural difficulties and problems in CI. The study arrives at the main conclusion that the degree of quality in CI largely depends on the degree of relevance achieved by the interpreter’s TL version, i.e., quality in CI would rise exponentially with the degree of relevance achieved by the interpreter’s TL version. The study also concludes that the pragmatic RT can be considered a reliable instrument, a reliable frame of reference, or a reliable screening system that can ensure both relevance-building and a correspondingly concomitant quality-building in CI, i.e., RT can possibly fine-tune the interpreters’ performance in the booth.
