Full textThe purpose of this study is to understand the fundamental theological differences between churches (and "church families") based on an analysis of a number of statements on mission. It is built on the hypothesis that the differences between them appear the moment they try to express their faith to the world. Thus mission statements often reveal the fundamental differences which separate the churches and prevent them from bearing witness in unity. This study is right at the heart of the "mission and unity" debate. .

Full textThis dissertation deals with the evolution of the relationships between Anglicans and Lutherans in Europe in the last decades. It analyses the successive reports of the joint theological commissions (from the middle of the 1960s and the "declarations" officially ratified in Europe, which irrevocably establish a fuller unity between Anglican and Lutheran Churches : the declaration of Meissen signed in 1991 by the Lutheran, Reformed and United Churches in Germany and by the Anglican Church of England : the declaration of Porvoo signed in 1996 by a majority of Scandinavian and Baltic Lutheran Churches and by the Anglican Churches in Great Britain and Ireland ; and finally the declaration of Reuilly signed in 2001 by the French Lutheran and Reformed Churches and by the Anglican Churches in Great Britain and Ireland. .

Full textThe goal of this thesis, in six chapters, is to describe how the Fédération protestante de France was created and to trace its development throughout the twentieth century on historical and thematic modes. This research draws upon all the Acts of the General Meetings during the period ending with the 1991 Assembly in Lille. The Fédération protestante de France plays a major role as a promoter of both Protestant unity and ecumenism. It is an association and not a Church, which means each member retains authority concerning theological matters. Its very often avant-garde statements on ethical issues make it a unique institution. However, the Fédération protestante de France has been confronted by important challenges: managerial constraints, the method of representation of its member Churches and Organizations, the plurality of its components, changes in society, women’s roles, theological issues, and so on… This thesis does a focus on these different points and analyse them

Full textThis thesis aims to cast new light on the rapprochement of the Anglicans and the greek orthodox churches (1903-1930), viewed from a socio-historical perspective, based on different sources of archives of the period. It seeks to record the various stages of the relations between anglicanism and orthodoxy, as well as examine the reactionary strategy of the Vatican vis-à-vis the unification of both churches. A further aim is to study and analyze alliances and antagonisms between these three christian confessions and then to interpret the origins of ecclesiastical and religious purpose – the unity of christendom – and moving towards the sphere of political and diplomatic interests of states. The object, therefore, of “Christian unity” is situated, not only in the field of doctrinal theology, but mainly at the intersection between international relations, diplomatic history and religious sociology. Thus, this research aims to clarify the motivations as well as the difficulties with which the ecumenical movement was confronted during its origins. Whilst trying to explain the significance and the direction of the actions and the discourses of religious agents in order to answer to the new secular challenges, posed since the cataclysm of the first world war up until the advent of totalitarian regimes and the harmful repercussions of the great depression of 1929, this work tries to understand the evolution of the interdenominational relations between ecumenical dynamics and reconfiguration or reformulation of the inherited ecclesiastical competition, in the light of the complex political and ideological transformations of this period

Full textA comparative study across parishes (basic levels of ecclesial life, chosen for their multitudinist character) conducted over two periods in the same places to measure the progress of ecumenical practices and the concept of unity being developed. Its three parts discuss : (1) results by city ; (2) the progression of ecumenism by theme, i.e., common prayer, encounter groups, mixed-faith marriages, and the more recent Alpha Courses ; and (3) related complexcity issues : the form of unity being sought, and the implications on sacraments. Ecumenism continues to expend at local levels. It is marked by the strong emphasis placed on the brotherhood of Christians of all churches, whose ultimate realization is sought through reciprocal Eucharistic hospitality. This ecumenism also manifests the need to preserve faith identity, a concern that is interpreted as not separating, yet leads to mistrust any proposal of institutional unity
Bengard, Beate. "Rezeption und Anerkennung : die ökumenische Hermeneutik von Paul Ricœur im Spiegel aktueller Dialogprozesse in Frankreich." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014STRAK005.
Full textOur dissertation deals with the ecumenical hermeneutics of the French philosopher Paul Ricœur. The interest of his theory for the ecumenical theology lies in the field of the ecumenical reception. What makes the ecumenical reception so specific is the fact, that it requires the acceptation of the otherness – the alterity – of the ecumenical partner. Obviously, this process goes far beyond the ratification of ecumenical documents. In order to clarify the process of reception, we need a hermeneutical model explaining the interrelation of the interpersonal recognition of the otherness, the reception of texts and the change of collective identities. We deduce a complex model of the reception process from the theory of Paul Ricœur and we compare the model of Ricœur with three concrete ecumenical processes in France. As we see, there is a high degree of accordance between these examples and Ricœurs hermeneutics. In chapter 6, we give a summary in French

Full textThe Common Christological Declaration signed in Rome in 1994 between the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church testifies to a genuine desire for a return to the common faith between the two Churches. It puts an end to a separation dating from the 5th century, due to the Christological quarrels between the two patriarchs Nestorius and Cyril of Alexandria. The Church of the East has always had a double isolation: one geographical, political and cultural since it was formerly outside the borders of the Roman Empire, and the other dogmatic and ecclesiological due to its defense of ecumenical masters condemned such as Nestorius and Theodore de Mopsueste. It exploits the anthropological terms kyana (nature), qnoma and parsopa (person), of the Syriac language, at the basis of the controversies and misunderstandings on the one person in Christ. In this debate, the role of Mar Baba the Great in the seventh century is crucial, for in his book Liber de Unione he gives a precise definition of these terms and systematizes Syro-Oriental theology. He is at the origin of the Christological confession: two natures, two qnome in one person. The Christological Declaration of 1994 reveals to the world what unites the two Churches: the person of Christ. It is the result of a concerted effort by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the Unity of Christians and the Church of the East. The desire of Mar Denkha IV to sign achristological agreement with Rome met that of André de Halleux on the Catholic side and Mar Bawai Soro on the Assyrian side. The Assyro-Catholic Joint Committee continued this task with a view to unity, from 1995 to 2004, supported by the "Pro Oriente" Foundation. In 2005, the dialogue was suspended with the refusal of the Assyrians to sign the agreement on the sacraments. The year 2007, aims at resuming the dialogue between the two parties

Full textLaw scolars are traditionnally interested in the implementation of the separation of church and state by the administrative courts during the Third Republic. However, a renewal of the classic understanding was possible. While classic studies focus on the contribution of the Conseil d’Etat to the success of the Séparation and the protection of freedom of thought and religion, it is conceivable to study administrative case law from the angle of interactions between republican institutions and judicial review of administration. This methodological framework allows to underline mutual influences between the judiciary and republican institutions in the history of the administrative jurisdiction. Thus, as the Séparation is concerned, case law has played a strategic part in the implementation and enrichment of the principles established by the 9 december 1905 Act, therefore contributing to provide substance to the legal concept of laïcité de l’Etat. In the same time, and especially concerning the case law relating to the administrative regulation of expressions of religious beliefs in the public space, the political and legal context of the Séparation has had a decisive influence on the construction of the republican recours pour excès de pouvoir. This contribution consisted in a modernization of the judicial review techniques and a more accurate control of discretionary powers of the administrative authority. Through the study of the two main aspects of administrative case law relating to the Séparation, this research would like to enlighten the transformation of the traditional imperial-type administrative jurisdiction into a democratic and republican one
