Full textThe use and practice of infographic restitutions in the field of built-up material vestiges has always been an important foundation in research and scientific experiments. This thesis questions the role of digital models from the excavation to representation of research results. The main body of this thesis cornes from interviews with and discussions of several groups of experts. Research in the field of archaeological and virtual reconstruction of ancient buildings gathers researchers from a variety of professions and possessing different sets of skills. Among them, professional abilities of three groups (the architect, the archaeologist and the IT expert) have been discussed. For the public, the virtual reconstitution of digital models using computers can guarantee and lead to a suitable representation in exhibitions. This thesis is based on four approaches: a bibliographic approach, interviews with experts, a public survey and the analysis of case studies. Suggestions which may improve the nnultidisciplinary work are: to utilise results from source analysis, conduct interviews and surveys to understand the expectations of each nominated groups, finding the possible ways of interacting between these experts and proposing the potential solutions. We are interested in aligning the expectations of those expert groups through these digital models. These approaches will also involve the use of digital models in the form of representation and museum devices in exhibition spaces. In this context, the concept of digital model can lead to the basis for exchange and communication of ideas

Full textThrough the donation of his entire work collection to the French state, Rodin founded his museum at the end of his life. The foundation of this monographic museum has been received as a model of legacy for posterity. In the past the idea that Rodin has given his full support to all the museums has been overestimated. Meanwhile, the issues of the specificity of the museums and its links with the artist has been disregarded by the historians. More broadly, the links between the artists of the 19th century and their contemporary museums has also been neglected. Yet, the works of the sculptor were found all over the world before the creation of the Rodin museum and even more after his death. We will focus on this dramatic diffusion in France to identify and understand its mechanisms. Which museums acquired Rodin’s works? Why, when and in which circumstances? What has been Rodin’s position regarding those museums? From the creation of a catalogue, the goal of this thesis is to analyze the role played by museums in the career, the knowledge, and the judgment of the artist’s work. To better understand and rebuild the institutional landscape, the social habits, the actors and networks involved in this diffusion, we will focus on the movement of the works from the studio to the exhibitions. Our study is divided in six parts: the visitor experience and the mental representations of the museum, the promotion and the legitimization strategies in the museums and the Parisian exhibitions, the depreciation and reconsideration tendencies towards the museums in the provinces, the creation and the institutionalization of the monographic museum, the organization of the posthumous diffusion by the Rodin museum, the various judgments and the contradictory readings of the famous sculptor’s work

Full textThe Third Republic enabled French museums to become a place of cultural education similar to that of schools. A national, federated network of museums was established for national collections of art in the early 20th Century, during the rise of provincial museums. The French state sought to display a self-legitimizing, civic-mindedness and to teach lessons of history of the Nation and national heritage to its citizens. More than an institutional history of the rise of provincial museums, this study demonstrates the involvement of the curators of provincial museums in the development of that policy and shows how it led to the creation of an organized profession. Utilizing the report of the parliamentary commission for French museums created in 1905, 263 curators in charge of state sponsored long-term loans were identified and studied. Involved in the safeguarding of patrimony, they belonged to numerous provincial academies and local scholarly societies. At the museum, they provided a local history lesson related to French national history. They had to cope with locally specific issues, particularly financial restrictions and local politics, but succeeded in fashioning a new way of working that was agreed to by ail colleagues in provincial institutions as well as French national museums, such as the musée du Louvre, when museology was created

During decade 1840-1850, the administration of the commissioners-experts ends for the benefit of the curators who supplant them within the establishment. Henceforth the field of the expertise to the museum falls in the exclusive hands of the curators. ln England, two art dealers participate, each in their way. in the implementation of the first museum of national art, before this slandered profession is definitively excluded from the management of the public museums

Full textWhat is curating? What kind of practices and representations does it bring up? This PHD propose to answer those questions by imagining curatorial practise under design perspective. Curating actors being hard to name from each others, a definition must be given while observing names used by different discipline and their effects. That is why the first part propose an archeology of curatorial practice analysing the diversity of displays and of caregivers. This transhistorical approach underlines the complexity of what's at stake in exhibition nowadays. As for the second part, a field work in museum public relations helps to analyse the set up ofan exhibition from a project point of view, the curator being the conductor. Busy proposing sets of pieces of art responding to contexts and shaped by constraints of the field in which he works, he finally behave just like a designer able to answer the different questions of an hypermodern world. As a study subject, design here can help in two different ways : From conception to final installment of an exhibition, it helps understand what lies beneath the very beginning of the project and draws portraits of curatorial actors. Finally the third part propose to understand curating through the lens of delphic oracular practices. It aims at widening the perpectives of study to better understand curatorial problematics. This reinterpretation from antic oracle perspective allows a new understanding of contemporary exhibition and creation and questions transformation processes that turns an exhibition into an appealing touristic product, in a time where art seems gone from mute contemplation to a zapping attitude
