Depuis la fin des années 1980, la province de Québec est le théâtre d’une véritable prolifération de statuts de protection écologique sur terres privées. Réserves naturelles en milieu privé, dons écologiques, servitudes de conservation et « fiducies foncières » se multiplient maintenant dans certaines régions du Québec méridional. Vu la nature privée des transactions foncières qui composent ce mouvement, ce dernier demeure largement méconnu. Il a pourtant eu un impact substantiel sur le façonnement de certaines politiques contemporaines concernant la conservation du patrimoine naturel au Québec. À travers une recherche détaillée de fonds d’archives ministériels et une série d’entrevues avec des acteurs clefs, cet article retrace la genèse de ce mouvement de conservation volontaire au Québec. Il souligne comment les États canadien et québécois, de même que certaines corporations à but non lucratif, ont facilité la mise en place d’un réseau d’aires protégées privées largement financées par le trésor public, par l’entremise d’avantages fiscaux. La reconstruction de cette institutionnalisation de la conservation volontaire au Québec révèle comment l’État fut un agent actif dans la décentralisation, la privatisation et la fiscalisation progressive de la conservation du patrimoine écologique au Québec.

This essay on electoral geography, the first, perhaps, to be published in Canada, is divided into four distinct parts. The first one deals with the themes of the twenty five provincial electoral campaigns. It includes maps showing the results of the votation in every county of the Province, as divided between the two main political parties, the Liberal and the Conservative. The second part, almost exclusively graphic, examines the political attitude of every provincial county. To circumvent the various problems, graphic curves have been established, indicating the percentage of the liberal and conservative voters and of the nonvoters. In a third part, some aspects of a very particular electoral phenomenon, abstention, are studied. After all possible causes of error had been discarded, a nonvoter curve was obtained, which is used, in particular, to study the fluctuations of the parties. Finally, the influence of the rural vote, a basic element in a long life ministerial party, the geographical distribution of the parties and its evolution within the regions according to certain causes v.g. economic crises, and the Québec electoral System, in relation to the vote and to the parties, are analyzed in a last part about the conditions of political life in the Province of Québec.

Created in 1967, the Bibliothèque nationale de Québec exists to collect, conserve and disseminate the published documentary output of the province, foreign documents about Quebec and works written by authors from Quebec. All forms of document - including maps, music, posters, art reproductions, software and microforms - are collected, by legal deposit, purchase or exchange. As well as the national bibliography, the BnQ publishes a wide range of bibliographic lists and indexes, and various works on the conservation of collections. It allocates ISBNs to Canadian francophone authors, participates in the Canadian CIP programme, and maintains numerous links with other national libraries and international francophone libraries. Recent developments include an integrated bibliographic computer system based on the UTLAS server in Toronto and the software suite Best Seller; the creation of a Web site for promoting and allowing access to its services; and the expansion of the library's physical resources through major building and refurbishment work, allowing significant increases in both conservation and dissemination activities.

L’Acte de l’Amérique du Nord britannique confère au Parlement du Canada une compétence législative exclusive en matière de gestion et de conservation des pêcheries côtières et intérieures : cette compétence s’entend principalement de la gestion des ressources halieutiques et elle n’apparaît pas être absolue. En effet, il s’agit d’un pouvoir du Parlement dont l’exercice fut souvent contesté sur le plan judiciaire par les provinces; simplement parce qu’il met en cause le pouvoir fédéral exclusif de réglementer ce secteur, d’une part, et, d’autre part, les droits de propriété des provinces. C’est à la suite de décisions judiciaires sur le sujet que des ententes administratives ont été conclues entre les autorités fédérales et celles de quelques provinces. Règle générale, la conclusion de ces ententes a permis aux provinces qui en sont bénéficiaires d’appliquer certaines politiques en matière de gestion des pêcheries. Après un rappel des décisions judiciaires concernant l’étendue de la compétence fédérale en la matière et des droits provinciaux, l’auteur aborde l’étude du contenu de ces ententes ainsi que leur mécanisme d’application; l’étendue des pouvoirs délégués peut en effet varier d’une province à l’autre et l’auteur insiste particulièrement sur la spécificité de l’entente liant le Québec. Finalement, il s’interroge sur la validité des ententes actuelles sur un plan juridique.

Résumé Pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, les fleuves et les rivières canadiennes furent mobilisés pour fournir de l’énergie pour la production militaire. Au Québec plus que dans toute autre province, on assista à l’intégration de réseaux hydroélectriques, à la construction de barrages, et à l’introduction de nouvelles méthodes de planification de la conservation énergétique. Ces actions eurent pour effet d’augmenter substantiellement l’énergie électrique disponible pour la production des matériaux de guerre nécessaires à l’effort militaire des Alliés. Peu d’attention fut portée aux effets environnementaux de la production énergétique, mais comme les réseaux connurent une forte croissance d’échelle, leurs effets se ressentirent sur de grandes distances, et des programmes de production et de conservation énergétique contribuèrent à coordonner les pratiques des rivières et des fleuves éloignées. Les grands réseaux techniques devinrent ainsi des éco-réseaux.

Procédant à une analyse critique de la récente réforme de l'aide sociale au Québec, l'auteur est amené à faire un lien entre problèmes sociaux et politiques sociales. Après avoir rappelé le contexte socio-économique (crise économique au début des années 1980, crise de l'État-Providence, etc.), il estime que cette réforme s'inscrit dans un « virage social », marqué au coin d'un « néo-conservatisme », ou d'un « Reaganisme social », d'où son caractère punitif vis-à-vis les assistés sociaux définis comme « une bande de paresseux et de fraudeurs ». Mais après avoir décrit et commenté les principaux éléments de cette réforme, l'auteur estime que cette réforme risque de produire, par la fameuse alchimie des effets pervers, des résultats contraires à ceux escomptés, soit « l'amplification de l'appauvrissement des bénéficiaires et de l'oppression sociale dont ils sont déjà victimes ». Finalement, D. Fortin montre comment cette réforme s'inscrit au coeur d'un nouveau projet de société.

Malgré l’importance confirmée des listes rouges en tant que source d’information pour la conservation adéquate de la biodiversité et alors que de telles listes détaillées existent déjà pour de nombreux groupes tels que les mammifères ou les oiseaux, aucune liste de macromycètes (champignons supérieurs) en situation précaire n’est encore disponible dans la plupart des régions du monde, y compris au Québec. Les écosystèmes forestiers matures semblent abriter de nombreuses espèces rares et devraient par conséquent être inventoriés avec une attention particulière pour fournir des renseignements de base sur la flore macrofongique québécoise. Notre étude avait donc pour objectif de documenter la diversité des macromycètes présents dans une forêt ancienne. Vingt-deux excursions hebdomadaires ont été effectuées entre juin et octobre 2012 dans un écosystème forestier mature exceptionnel, le Boisé-des-Muir. Un total de 333 espèces de macromycètes y ont été identifiées, dont 7 qui étaient inconnues pour la province de Québec. Les genres Lepiota, Cystolepiota et Leucoagaricus étaient exceptionnellement bien représentés. La grande majorité de ces 333 espèces étaient saprotrophiques, confirmant ainsi l’importance des débris ligneux dans de tels écosystèmes. La sous-représentation des espèces mycorhiziennes, malgré une bonne proportion d’espèces rares, est probablement attribuable aux conditions météorologiques propres à l’année d’échantillonnage. En gardant à l’esprit la prudence avec laquelle de tels inventaires doivent être comparés, la présente étude laisse croire que les forêts feuillues matures du sud du Québec présentent une diversité macrofongique élevée.

The Quebec Department of Natural Resources (Ministère des ressources naturelles du Québec) is working to identify and protect old-growth forests in the deciduous forest zone of the province. A total of 88 sites was visited and a multivariate analysis of the main attributes of old growth allowed the development of quantitative definitions and criteria for identifying old-growth sugar maple (Acer saccharum), eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), eastern white-cedar (Thuja occidentalis), and red spruce (Picea rubens) stands. Life expectancy of various species according to environment was determined through a statistical analysis of 21 500 study trees taken from the province's forest inventory. Four different identification criteria for old-growth forests were developed that include a number of indicators for old growth. Along with advanced age of forest cover, the criteria that best reflected the nature of old-growth forests were the presence of large dead trees, low cutting intensity, and the importance of shade-tolerant species. Old-growth forests identified during this validation work occupy roughly 60 km2 in Quebec's deciduous forest zone. Among other things, old-growth sugar maple stands of over 400 years old were discovered, containing stems with a diameter at breast height of 140 cm and a height of over 38 m. The very great potential of many of these exceptional forests for scientific research and biodiversity conservation is illustrated by the work carried out in the Boisé des Muir. Despite its small size, this sugar maple stand, which is over 300 years old, has advanced knowledge in fields as varied as forest dynamics, biodiversity, and climate studies, and has also served as a control site for various scientific studies. Among vertebrates, herpetofauna has the highest proportion of declining species. Detection of environmental DNA (eDNA) is a promising method towards significantly increasing large-scale herpetological conservation efforts. However, the integration of eDNA results within a management framework requires an evaluation of the efficiency of the method in large natural environments and the calibration of eDNA surveys with the quantitative monitoring tools currently used by conservation biologists. Towards this end, we first developed species-specific primers to detect the wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) a species at risk in Canada, by quantitative PCR (qPCR). The rate of eDNA detection obtained by qPCR was also compared to the relative abundance of this species in nine rivers obtained by standardized visual surveys in the Province of Québec (Canada). Second, we developed multi-species primers to detect North American amphibian and reptile species using eDNA metabarcoding analysis. An occurrence index based on the distribution range and habitat type was compared with the eDNA metabarcoding dataset from samples collected in seven lakes and five rivers. Our results empirically support the effectiveness of eDNA metabarcoding to characterize herpetological species distributions. Moreover, detection rates provided similar results to standardized visual surveys currently used to develop conservation strategies for the wood turtle. We conclude that eDNA detection rates may provide an effective semiquantitative survey tool, provided that assay calibration and standardization is performed.

RÉSUMÉ Durant les années 1940 et au début des années 1950, la Ligue ouvrière catholique (LOC) est un mouvement profondément partagé entre sa mission apostolique, qui est d'assurer le relèvement moral des familles ouvrières afin de contrer le spectre de la déchristianisation, et son engagement social, qui l'amène à vouloir contribuer à l'humanisation des conditions de vie et à freiner la prolétarisation de la classe ouvrière. Néanmoins, l'étude des modes d'organisation et des méthodes d'intervention, des réalisations et des stratégies d'engagement social de la Ligue (qui se dit à la fois mouvement ouvrier et mouvement familial) permet d'apprécier en quoi elle pose les jalons d'un modèle d'intervention et de développement de type communautaire. Ce modèle, dans son refus d'intégration à l'État providence, est facilement assimilé au conservatisme; il n'en constitue pas moins, nous semble-t-il, un héritage favorable à l'émergence, dans les années 1960, d'une animation sociale qui, bien que séculière et professionnelle, ne s'est jamais affranchie d'une certaine « déontologie catholique ».

The impact of agricultural practices on wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) movements and survivorship was investigated in a fragmented agri-forest landscape over two years. Agricultural activities and machinery contributed to the death of 20% of radio-tracked turtles. Annual survivorship of adults was 0.904 and 0.868 and for juveniles it was 0.815 and 0.831 for 1998 and 1999, respectively. Mutilation rates in adults were 90% +/- 3% in both years; in contrast, the maximum rate in juveniles was 57%. Setting the cutting height of disc mowers to 100 mm would increase harvest yields, reduce wear on machinery, decrease soil erosion, and reduce turtle mortality and mutilation rates. The concepts of integral, statistical, and linear range are introduced as distinct estimators of turtle movements. Since integral ranges include all habitats critical to survival, they provide an important contribution to our knowledge of imperiled species. Statistical ranges are stable and easily promote within and between study comparisons. Linear ranges quantify migratory and ranging movements. Thread-trailing techniques were used to record the fine-scale movements of six adult male G. insculpta translocated to an experimental hayfield patch-matrix. Although patch size had no effect on move length or path sinuosity, habitat structure did. Paths were generally straighter and move length longer in the harvested portion of a hayfield. Apparent habitat boundaries were shown to be permeable. Subjects exhibit three movement phases: agitation dispersal, local search, and ranging. Thus, G. insculpta exhibit predetermined movement patterns and move to maximize the likelihood of locating resources, while minimizing the probability of revisiting previously searched areas. Recent changes in agricultural practices and machinery are having a decidedly negative impact on G. insculpta. This study provides new insights into the movements of G. insculpta. A two year study was initiated in 2001 on a 2.4 ha site of mostly St. Amable loamy sand and shallow loamy sand at the Macdonald Campus Research Farm. This study sought to assess the effects of long term tillage and residue practices on soil physical properties and to relate these properties to their influence on total carbon, total nitrogen and soil microbial biomass-carbon. The site was set up as a factorial experiment with three tillage practices (no till---NT; reduced till---RT; and conventional till---CT) and two residue practices (with residue (grain corn), +R; without residue (silage corn), -R). Soil physical properties measured were bulk density, macroporosity at -6 kPa, saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat ), dry aggregate distribution, soil moisture and soil temperature. Wheel versus non-wheel track bulk density was also determined in the NT plots. Total porosity, soil water characteristic curves and pore volume distribution were derived from field samples. Crop yield was also assessed. Tillage alone had an effect on total porosity, bulk density, pore diameter and macroporosity. No individual physical property was significantly affected by the residue treatments; however, the tillage and residue interaction was significant for Ksat, soil moisture and soil temperature. Dry aggregate distribution was not affected by either tillage, residue or the combination of the two. Tillage affected total carbon and total nitrogen in the 0--0.10 m depth. Soil microbial biomass-carbon was affected by residue inputs. Total carbon and nitrogen were influenced by the bulk density, but none of the other soil physical properties. Soil microbial biomass-carbon was not influenced by any of the physical properties. Tillage and residue practices had no significant effect on crop yield for either year.

Au-delà des coupes totales qui ont façonné le paysage de la forêt québécoise, les traitements sylvicoles ont également contribué à modifier la structure des forêts exploitées tant au niveau de la densité que de la composition des peuplements. Plus particulièrement, l’éclaircie précommerciale, un traitement qui a pour objectif de stimuler la croissance en diamètre des arbres conservés et à réduire la vulnérabilité des peuplements de sapins baumiers aux dommages générés par la tordeuse des bourgeons de l’épinette provoque des changements dans la densité, la structure et la composition des peuplements pouvant affecter plusieurs espèces fauniques. La Grive de Bicknell représente une priorité de la conservation de la biodiversité en Amérique du Nord. Cette grive est endémique à la partie nord-est du continent nord-américain et son aire de nidification, discontinue, en fait l’une des espèces de passereau dont la répartition est la plus restreinte au nord du Mexique. L’effectif de cette espèce est relativement faible; on estime que le Québec abrite la majorité de la population canadienne de Grives de Bicknell. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’identifier les paramètres écologiques reliés à la présence de la Grive de Bicknell dans des environnements forestiers dominés par l’exploitation de la matière ligneuse. Les domaines vitaux de la Grives de Bicknell contenaient une proportion significativement plus importante de forêts denses que de secteurs soumis à des éclaircies précommerciales. À l’intérieur de leurs domaines vitaux, les grives se retrouvaient aussi davantage dans les peuplements denses que dans les peuplements éclaircis, et n’évitaient pas les lisières de peuplements. La Grive de Bicknell fréquentait davantage les sites localisés à hautes altitudes, particulièrement les peuplements qui n’ont pas fait l’objet d’éclaircies, sinon très peu. L’espèce a surtout été signalée dans des jeunes peuplements de 15-30 ans bien que plusieurs individus l’ont également été dans des peuplements plus vieux au sommet de montagnes où la foresterie est moins répandue. Dans les secteurs où l’habitat favorable est abondant et répandu, la Grive de Bicknell est absente de nombreux sites, indiquant qu’il n’y a pas de pénurie d’habitat favorable. Par ailleurs, la Grive à dos olive était présente à presque toutes les stations où la Grive de Bicknell était présente, ce qui ne semble pas corresponde à une possibilité de compétition interspécifique.Beyond clearcuts which shaped the Quebec forested landscape, silvicultural activities contributed to modify stand density and composition. More specifically, precommercial thinning, aiming at the enhancement of the radial growth of preserved stems and at reducing balsam fir vulnerability to spruce budworm infestation generate changes in stem density, stand structure and composition detrimental to various wildlife species. Bicknell’s Thrush is a top biodiversity conservation priority in North America. This thrush, endemic to northeastern North America and with a discontinuous breeding distribution, is one of the most restricted forest bird occurring north of Mexico. Its population estimate is quite low and Quebec would host most of the Canadian species population. The objective of this thesis is to identify the ecological parameters related to Bicknell’s Thrush presence in forests managed for wood harvesting. Bicknell’s Thrush home range comprised more dense balsam fir stands and fewer thinned stands than available. Within home ranges, thrushes were found more frequently in unthinned balsam fir stands than in thinned stands, and they did not avoid edges. Bicknell’s Thrushes were most likely to be reported at high elevations, in forest stands with high tree stem densities that underwent little or no stem reduction from forestry activities. The species was mostly found in young, 15-30 yrs. old, stands, with additional birds in older stands on hilltops where forestry is much less prevalent. In regions where suitable habitat is widespread and abundant, a substantial part of potential habitats were unoccupied by breeding Bicknell’s Thrushes revealing no shortage of suitable habitat. Moreover, Swainson’s Thrush was present at most point count where Bicknell’s Thrush was reported which do not suggest a potential interspecific competition situation.

The impact of tillage and residue management on soil microorganisms was studied over the maize (Zea mays L.) growing season in southwestern Quebec. Tillage and residue treatments were imposed on a sandy loam to loamy sand soil in fall 1991. Treatments consisted of no till, reduced tillage, and conventional tillage with crop residues either removed from (-R) or retained on (+R) experimental plots, laid out in a randomized complete block design. Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMB-C), soil microbial nitrogen (SMB-N) and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) concentrations were measured four times, at two depths (0--10 cm, 10--20 cm), over the 2001 growing season. Sample periods were: May 7th (pre planting), June 25 th, July 16th, and September 29th (prior to corn harvest). The effect of time was of a greater magnitude than those attributed to tillage or residue treatments. While SMB-C showed no seasonal change (160 mug C g-1 soil); SMB-N was responsive to mineral nitrogen fertilizer; and PLFA data showed an increase in fungi and total PLFA throughout the season. PLFA profiles showed better distinction between sampling period, and depth, than treatments. Of the two treatments, the effect of residue was more pronounced than that of tillage, with increased SMB-C and SMB-N (6.1% and 96%) in +R plots compared to -R plots. This study illustrated that measuring soil quality based on soil microbial components must take into account seasonal changes in soil physical, chemical conditions, and nutrient supply.

Decomposition and N dynamics of grain-corn residues were investigated in a field study in southwestern Quebec, with particular reference to the roles of different plant parts (stems, leaves etc.) in determining overall residue mass loss and N content. A litterbag study was conducted, with surface and buried placements in plots under three tillage systems (no-till, reduced tillage, and conventional tillage, established five years before litterbag placement). Residue mass loss and N content were monitored over a two-year period. Separate data were obtained for leaves, stems, husks, and cobs. Net values for all residues combined were calculated taking into account initial proportions of each plant part at harvest. Overall estimates were made based on residue depth-distribution typical of each tillage system. A spreadsheet-based model of surface residue mass loss was developed, incorporating litterbag mass and other surface-residue data, in order to determine how well litterbag results predicted surface residue mass loss in the field, and to test alternative assumptions regarding residue decomposition and/or burial. Buried residues lost mass more quickly than surface residues, as expected. Thus residue breakdown would be fastest in a conventional system, slowest under no-till, and intermediate with reduced tillage. Substantial decreases in mass and residue N content occurred between fall placement and first sampling in spring, despite low temperatures for much of this period. Mass loss in the first period was substantial for stems as we as husks and leaves. Cobs decomposed most slowly throughout. Nitrogen dynamics, including effects of depth on residue N content, differed greatly by residue type. All the lower-N residues (cobs, husks, stems) immobilized N at some point. This dissertation presents a new perspective on the history of conservation in North America. In contrast to historiography that locates conservation-oriented approaches to the North American environment as the product of late-nineteenth-century concerns within Canada and the United States, this study links wildlife conservation in Quebec directly to longstanding European land tenure, estate management, and associational strategies. Through a range of materials including state documents, associational records and personal and family papers, I show how advocates of fish and game protection in the province drew heavily on Old World customs and traditions, particularly those of British landowners, who displayed in their varied social, economic, and political commitments an ongoing engagement with improvement. These 'patrician sensibilities,' I argue, formed the basis of the regulatory system that developed in Quebec during the period 1850-1914, first on the remote salmon rivers of the north shore and Gaspe peninsula, and by the First World War on the bulk of the province's best and most easily accessible hunting and fishing territories. In addition to the regulatory strategies that developed during this period, the dissertation deals with forms and limits of resistance on the part of aboriginal and non-aboriginal subsistence, commercial, and sport hunters and fishers. The dissertation's major contribution lies in its demonstration of the longstanding patterns that underpinned the development of conservation strategies in North America. Class and gender are central to the project, and it also has important implications for our understanding of civil society and state formation.

Au Québec, l’eau trouve une attention particulière depuis la dernière décennie avec la mise en place de la Politique nationale de l’eau mise en œuvre par le gouvernement du Québec, en 2002. Cette politique s’inscrivant selon les principes de nouvelle gouvernance modifia visage de la gestion de l’eau au Québec en instituant graduellement une gestion intégrée par bassin versant sur le territoire québécois. La recherche s’intéresse aux organismes chargés de cette question qui, malgré les problèmes reliés à la Politique nationale de l’eau, réussissent à instituer une table de concertation menant à une gestion intégrée de l’eau.
Le mémoire présente les résultats d’une récente enquête menée auprès des acteurs membres de deux organismes de bassin versant. Au total, 27 entretiens ont été réalisés dans le cadre de cette étude dont l’objectif était de saisir, à l’intérieur d’entretiens semi-dirigés, les particularités institutionnelles de chacun des organismes. Deux types de gouvernance sont apparus ; l’une axée sur la conservation et l’autre sur la réhabilitation.

A two year study was initiated in 1999 at the Macdonald Campus Farm, on a 2.4 ha site consisting mainly of St-Amable sand to shallow loamy sand (Typic Endoaquent; Humic Gleysol). The site was planted to alfalfa ( Medicago sativa) prior to the establishment of the experimental design and has been planted to corn (Zea mays L.) since 1991. The experiment was set up as a randomized complete block design and consisted of three tillage levels (NT, no-till; RT, reduced tillage; and CT, conventional tillage) and two residue levels (-R, no residues; +R, with residues). This study was performed in order to ascertain the effect of these management systems on soil organic carbon (SOC), particulate organic matter carbon (POM-C), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) levels and soil physical properties. Soil physical properties measured included bulk density, saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), dry and wet aggregate stability, total porosity, macroporosity at -1 kPa and -6 kPa of matric potential, and moisture content. Crop yield was also measured. Results indicated that lower rates of mineralization of POM-C under NT+R in the surface 0--10 cm led to significantly higher SOC at the same depth. There were no significant differences between treatments at the 10--20 cm depth. The MBC was not a good indicator of the differences in soil organic matter levels between treatments. No-till treatments had higher bulk densities, reduced total porosity and macroporosity, increased moisture content, and increased constant-head measured Ksat. Differences in Ksat as measured with the Guelph permeameter, were not significant between treatments, most likely due to increased earthworm activity in NT. There were no significant differences in crop yield in 1999, but a significantly wetter year in 2000 caused lower grain yields in NT+R compared to NT-R and CT+R.

Au Québec, la température hivernale atteint -35 °C et les cépages non-rustiques (Vitis vinifera L.) doivent être protégés du gel par l'installation de géotextiles ou par buttage qui consiste en un travail du sol intensif et bisannuel pour recouvrir et découvrir les vignes. Ces conditions restreignent l'implantation de cultures intercalaires : (1) leur établissement et leur croissance sont limités à la saison de production, (2) le buttage détruit la végétation intercalaire à l'automne et (3) l'installation de géotextiles permet la culture d'espèces pérennes, mais elle est plus coûteuse. Au Québec, l'adoption de cultures intercalaires demeure donc marginale, malgré les bienfaits reconnus de ces cultures, dont le contrôle des adventices et l'atténuation de l'érosion hydrique. Leur impact sur la croissance et la production de la vigne sont également méconnus sous le climat continental du Québec. Une expérience en blocs aléatoires complets a été établie (2018-2020) dont l'objectif était de comparer l'effet du désherbage mécanique à deux mélanges de graminées intercalaires (annuelles vs pérennes) sur le contrôle des adventices et leur diversité, la stabilité des agrégats du sol ainsi que la croissance et la productivité de la vigne durant la période d'implantation. L'expérience incluait aussi un témoin enherbé (adventices). Le désherbage mécanique a mieux contrôlé les adventices, et a diminué la richesse et la diversité de la flore comparativement aux couverts végétaux. La densité des adventices annuelles et vivaces n'a pas diminué sous cultures intercalaires et le recouvrement des adventices au sol surpassait les 50 % en fin de saison. Néanmoins, la biomasse aérienne des adventices est demeurée en-dessous de celle du traitement enherbé durant les deux premières années. En fin de saison, la stabilité des agrégats du sol était plus élevée sous couvert végétal comparativement au désherbage mécanique. Ni le rendement, ni la qualité des raisins n'ont été affectés par la régie de culture dans l'entre-rang.Non-hardy grapevine varieties require winter protection in southern Quebec because temperature can drop to –35 °C and cause irreversible frost damage. Winter protection is provided either by geotextiles or hilling, the latter generating intensive soil disturbance twice a year. These constraints limit the adoption of intercrops because 1) their establishment and growth are concurrent with the crop, 2) hilling destroys intercrops every fall, and 3) the use of geotextiles allows the adoption of perennial intercrops but is more expensive. Although it can control weeds and mitigate soil erosion, intercropping in Quebec vineyards is limited. Moreover, grapevine response to intercropping is poorly documented under Quebec's continental climate. A randomized complete block design experiment was conducted (2018-2020) to compare mechanical weeding to two grass mixture intercrops (annual vs perennial), during vineyard establishment. Variables tested included weed control and diversity, soil aggregate stability, vine growth, and grape yield. A weedy control was also included. Cultivation was more efficient at controlling weeds than both intercrops but decreased plant species richness and diversity in comparison to other treatments. Weed density did not decrease over time and weed cover was relatively high (> 50% at the end of the growing season) under intercrops. Nevertheless, weed shoot biomass was lower under intercrops than in the weedy control during the first two years. Cultivation was also detrimental to soil structure, it showed lower aggregate stability compared to vegetated treatments by the end of the season. None of the interrow management methods had an impact on vine yield fruit quality.

The biodiversity of Mediterranean-climate ecosystems is of particular interest and concern, not only because all five of these regions (the Mediterranean basin, California, central Chile, Cape Province of South Africa, western and southern parts of Australia) are among the thirty-four hotspots of species diversity in the world (Mittermeier et al. 2004), but they are also hotspots of human population density and growth (Cincotta and Engelman 2000). This relationship is not surprising because there is often a correlation between the biodiversity of natural systems and the abundance of people (Araùjo 2003; Médail and Diadema 2006) and this, inevitably, raises conservation problems. Within the larger hotspot of the Mediterranean basin as a whole, ten regional hotspots have been identified. They cover about 22 per cent of the basin’s total area and harbour about 44 per cent of Mediterranean endemic plant species (Médail and Quézel 1997, 1999), as well as a large number of rare and endemic animals (Blondel and Aronson 1999). A key feature of these Mediterranean hotspots as a whole is their extraordinarily high topographic diversity with many mountainous and insular areas. Not surprisingly this results in high endemism rates and they contain more than 10 per cent of the total plant richness (see the recent synthesis of Thompson 2005). However, of all the mediterranean-type regions in the world, the Mediterranean basin harbours the lowest percentage (c.5%) of natural vegetation considered to be in ‘pristine condition’ (Médail and Myers 2004; Chapter 7). With an average of as many as 111 people per km2, one may expect a significant decline in biological diversity in the Mediterranean basin—a region that has been managed, modified, and, in places, heavily degraded by humans for millennia (Thirgood 1981; Braudel 1986; McNeill 1992; Blondel and Aronson 1999; Chapter 9). There are two contrasting theories that consider the relationships between humans and ecosystems in the Mediterranean (Blondel 2006, 2008). The first one is the ‘Ruined Landscape or Lost Eden’ theory, first advocated by painters, poets, and historians in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and later by a large number of ecologists.
