Full textBeyond clearcuts which shaped the Quebec forested landscape, silvicultural activities contributed to modify stand density and composition. More specifically, precommercial thinning, aiming at the enhancement of the radial growth of preserved stems and at reducing balsam fir vulnerability to spruce budworm infestation generate changes in stem density, stand structure and composition detrimental to various wildlife species. Bicknell’s Thrush is a top biodiversity conservation priority in North America. This thrush, endemic to northeastern North America and with a discontinuous breeding distribution, is one of the most restricted forest bird occurring north of Mexico. Its population estimate is quite low and Quebec would host most of the Canadian species population. The objective of this thesis is to identify the ecological parameters related to Bicknell’s Thrush presence in forests managed for wood harvesting. Bicknell’s Thrush home range comprised more dense balsam fir stands and fewer thinned stands than available. Within home ranges, thrushes were found more frequently in unthinned balsam fir stands than in thinned stands, and they did not avoid edges. Bicknell’s Thrushes were most likely to be reported at high elevations, in forest stands with high tree stem densities that underwent little or no stem reduction from forestry activities. The species was mostly found in young, 15-30 yrs. old, stands, with additional birds in older stands on hilltops where forestry is much less prevalent. In regions where suitable habitat is widespread and abundant, a substantial part of potential habitats were unoccupied by breeding Bicknell’s Thrushes revealing no shortage of suitable habitat. Moreover, Swainson’s Thrush was present at most point count where Bicknell’s Thrush was reported which do not suggest a potential interspecific competition situation.

Full textNon-hardy grapevine varieties require winter protection in southern Quebec because temperature can drop to –35 °C and cause irreversible frost damage. Winter protection is provided either by geotextiles or hilling, the latter generating intensive soil disturbance twice a year. These constraints limit the adoption of intercrops because 1) their establishment and growth are concurrent with the crop, 2) hilling destroys intercrops every fall, and 3) the use of geotextiles allows the adoption of perennial intercrops but is more expensive. Although it can control weeds and mitigate soil erosion, intercropping in Quebec vineyards is limited. Moreover, grapevine response to intercropping is poorly documented under Quebec's continental climate. A randomized complete block design experiment was conducted (2018-2020) to compare mechanical weeding to two grass mixture intercrops (annual vs perennial), during vineyard establishment. Variables tested included weed control and diversity, soil aggregate stability, vine growth, and grape yield. A weedy control was also included. Cultivation was more efficient at controlling weeds than both intercrops but decreased plant species richness and diversity in comparison to other treatments. Weed density did not decrease over time and weed cover was relatively high (> 50% at the end of the growing season) under intercrops. Nevertheless, weed shoot biomass was lower under intercrops than in the weedy control during the first two years. Cultivation was also detrimental to soil structure, it showed lower aggregate stability compared to vegetated treatments by the end of the season. None of the interrow management methods had an impact on vine yield fruit quality.

Full textThe focus of this research is to measure the significant factors affecting land values in the study area. The sample farm sales data used were drawn from four of Quebec's twelve agricultural regions. Two of these regions are among Quebec's most productive. These data were used in conjunction with a Hedonic Pricing Model for the analysis.
This research seeks to quantify the implied price paid for land characteristics, soil conservation and capital improvement investments. The research should determine whether the studied land market provides adequate price incentives for private market implementation of soil conservation and capital improvement investments. These investments are necessary to achieve a sustainable agriculture scheme.

Full textThe preservation and restoration project carried out in place royale, quebec city (canada), has resulted in the demolition of almost every building marked by the victorian era, and in the reconstruction of a development inspired by what may have prevailed in the french colony during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The project, which has been guided by nationalist and touristic motivations, started in 1970 and is still going on in 1995. This built heritage preservation policy is not exceptional in quebec. It was standard pratice between 1950 and 1978, and even left traces beyond 1980 in limited projects. This attitude towards heritage is opposite to the one adopted in europe and is closer to what can be seen elsewhere in canada and in the united states. Cultural and ideological principles of the conception of built heritage in quebec are to be found in the history of the double colonisation of this canadian province and in the relationship the quebec society maintains with history and art

Full textThis study assessed the effect of habitat management for the recovery of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus) on the diversity of boreal birds. An index of occupancy was estimated for 29 bird species from surveyed data, and then compared among seven simulated landscapes contrasting in cut-block distribution and harvest rotation. Whereas cut-block distribution had little effect on bird assemblages, bird diversity was better maintained under a 100-year harvest rotation than a 60-year rotation. Bird assemblages for both harvest rotations differed significantly from assemblages expected in an uncut landscape, implying that rotations shorter than natural disturbance cycles could affect regional biodiversity. Our method thus allows the assessment of the long-term impact of various management strategies on biodiversity prior their implementation. On this basis, we showed that the current habitat management guidelines for boreal caribou recovery would not be sufficient to conserve bird diversity in the boreal forest.

Full textNature conservancy is the main goal of wilderness protected areas. Some conservation strategies, focused on concepts such as ecological integrity, ecosystem management, connectivity, buffer zones, or charismatic megafauna protection have been elaborated in the recent years to reach this goal. The American black bear is a good model to evaluate the efficiency of these conservation strategies since many factors can affect the demography of this species, such as hunting and trapping, habitat loss, and forest exploitation. The central question of my thesis is then the following: “Can a protected area such as La Mauricie National Park of Canada be able to maintain ecological integrity of a large mammal such as the American black bear?”. I used data from the long-term (1990-2005) monitoring of the black bear population in La Mauricie National Park of Canada. In the first chapter, I evaluated the influence of hunting and trapping in the periphery of the park, as well as the influence of poaching and nuisance kills on the survival of bears. Main results indicated that human-caused mortalities have a significant effect on this bear population. In the second chapter, I undertook a population viability analysis. The growth rates estimated with survival and reproduction data indicated that the number of females appears stable in the population, but that the number of males would decline if the population became isolated. In the third chapter, I emphasized the importance of accounting for sampling error in population viability analysis. Finally, in the fourth chapter, I determined the size of the greater ecosystem of La Mauricie National Park of Canada, based on the study of the movements of bears. The results of this thesis show the importance of the territory located outside of a protected area. In my opinion, we will not be able to achieve the long-term protection of the integrity of a bear population in a park of the size of La Mauricie National Park of Canada as long as conservation objectives, supported by the establishment of buffer zones around protected areas, are not integrated in a large-scale greater ecosystem management plan.

Full textThis dissertation examines the above issues through the design, implementation, and assessment of the Collaborative Spatial Delphi (CSD) Methodology. The CSD methodology facilitates spatial thinking and discursive strategies to describe the complex social-technical dynamics associated with the knowledge-structuring-consensus nexus of the participation process. The CSD methodology describes this nexus by synthesizing research findings from knowledge management, focus group theory, systems theory, integrated assessment, visualization and exploratory analysis, and transformative learning all represented within a collaborative geographic information system (GIS) framework.
The CSD methodology was implemented in multiple contexts. Its use in two contexts - strategic planning and management of urban green spaces in Montreal (Canada); and priority setting for North American biodiversity conservation - are reported in detail in this dissertation. The summative feedbacks from all the CSD planning workshops help incrementally improve the design of the CSD process. This dissertation also reports on the design and use of questionnaire surveys to incorporate local realities into planning, as well as the development of an evaluation index to assess the face validity and effectiveness of the CSD process from the perspective of workshop participants.
The accumulated evidence from the CSD implementations suggests that many core issues exist across spatial problem solving situations. Thus, the design and specification of a core collaborative process model provides benefits for knowledge exchange. General systems theory was used to classify the core technical components of the collaborative GIS design, and soft systems theory was used to characterize the human activity dynamics. Object oriented principles enabled the generation of a flexible domain model, and the unified modelling language (UML) visually described the collaborative process. The CSD methodology is used as a proof of concept.
This dissertation contributes to knowledge in the general areas of Geography, Geographic information systems and science, and Environmental decision making. The specific contributions are threefold. First, the CSD provides a synthesis of multi-disciplinary theories and a tested tool for environmental problem solving. Second, the CSD facilitates a fusion of local and technical knowledge for more realistic consensus planning outcomes. Third, an empirical-theoretical visual formalism of the CSD allows for process knowledge standardization and sharing across problem solving situations.

Full textAt the beginning of 1990s, to meet objectives of regional development and maximization of the hydroelectric production, the government of Quebec adopted energy policies aiming to retrofit and construct small power stations by independent producers. To ensure their profitability, small power stations must be built close to existent energy transport networks and consumption places. Moreover, they are often located where the rivers are banked or present important falls. These sites are situated near or in the heart of inhabited and attended places, notably for recreotouristic purposes. Furthermore, these falls and landscapes are symbols of identity and have territorial significance for the local communities. This situation inevitably generated river-use conflicts where many perceptions of the management and the development of the rivers are in opposition. To make an in-depth analysis of this problem, we made a case study concerning the Batiscan river (Mauricie), where promoters considered the construction of three small hydroelectric power stations (1987-1990). Using 15 semi-directed talks and through a review of five daily newspapers (1990-2007), we analyzed the speech of the actors, in order to understand the strategic role and the evolution of the territorial representations of those concerned with the projects of small hydroelectric power stations. This study shows that the promoters of the small hydroelectric power stations perceive this type of development of the river as being a type of regional development which would make it possible to generate substantial economic repercussions for host territories. On the other hand, the opponents, gathered within citizen committees to obtain the abandonment of the projects. Their speech conveys the representation that the realization of the hydroelectric power stations on the Batiscan river goes against the concept of common good and would undermine the landscape, the environmental integrity of the river and the recreotouristic development of the area. By a process of collective reappropriation and valorization of the elements of the territory having a strong patrimonial and identity value, those sought to work out and implement alternative projects which would make it possible to counter the projects of small hydroelectric power stations and to guarantee the protection of the inherent characteristics of the river.

Full textThe world is facing worrisome declines in biodiversity. Species extinction rates have increased as a direct consequence of human activities. Protected areas have been implemented around the world in an effort to counter biodiversity loss. Although protected areas are part of the solution, they should be designed systematically in a way to maximize their effectiveness. Enhancing functional connectivity between protected areas is one way to increase their effectiveness. Climate change is disrupting environmental conditions globally. It is a threat to biodiversity that until recently was not often integrated into protected area design. Climate change has been shown to impact species movements, and therefore landscape functional connectivity. Some studies have suggested that enhancing functional connectivity between protected areas can also help species cope with climate change impacts. My thesis presents a methodology to design protected area networks while accounting for climate change and functional connectivity. My study area is located in the natural region of Gaspésie in Québec (Canada). The endangered Atlantic-Gaspésie population of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) was used as the focal species to define functional connectivity. This small population is in long-term decline due to predation and habitat change, but climate change may become an additional threat. First, I built a spatially explicit individual-based model to explain and simulate caribou movement. I used sparse VHF data available at the time of the study to select and parameterize a movement model using a pattern-oriented modeling strategy. My best model reproduced most of the movement patterns defined from the observed data. This model improved the understanding of the movement drivers for the Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou. It also provided spatial estimates of caribou landscape use in the Gaspésie region. I concluded that sparse data were sufficient to fit individual-based models when coupled with a pattern-oriented modeling strategy. Second, I estimated how climate change and conservation activities may impact caribou movement potential. I used the individual-based model to simulate caribou movements in hypothetical landscapes representing the impacts of various climate change scenarios and conservation activities. Conservation activities represented the implementation of new protected areas in Gaspésie, according to the scenario developed by the government of Québec, and the restoration of secondary roads inside protected areas. Climate change impacts on vegetation, as defined in my scenarios, reduced caribou movement potential. Road restoration was able to mitigate these negative effects whereas the implementation of the new protected areas did not improve caribou movement potential. Third, I presented a methodology to design effective protected area networks and proposed new protected areas to implement in Gaspésie to conserve biodiversity in the presence of climate change. I created a large sample of protected area networks expanding the existing network to reach an areal target of 12%. I then calculated an ecological representativeness index and two measures of functional connectivity over time for each network. Functional connectivity measures represented the overall access to the protected areas and the movement potential in them for the Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou. I used movement potential estimates for the current time period and for the future under different climate change scenarios to represent functional connectivity. The protected area network I proposed maximized the trade-off between the three network features I calculated. In this thesis I examined Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou movements under different environmental conditions, including climate change impacted landscapes. These results helped define new protected areas for the Gaspésie region that will protect the caribou population over time. I believe this thesis gives new insights on the Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou movement behavior, as well as on the management actions that could be taken in Gaspésie to improve conservation of caribou and of other species. I believe this methodology could be applied to other ecosystems with similar characteristics and needs.

Full textFor several years, human activities, fuelled by more efficient and effective technologies, create strong pressures on ecosystems. In response to this dynamic, conservation is of primary aspect. It aims to ensure the protection of ecosystems while allowing an access to them, sensitize and educate the public and promote contacts between people and nature. Patrimonialization policies are a key aspect of the processes of conservation of natural environments. They refer to all actions organized in the public domain related to the conservation and enhancement of the natural heritage. To date, researchers did not discuss systematically patrimonialization policies of natural environments. This thesis aims to provide food for thought for conservation under the assumption that the natural heritage in its formation mechanisms, is at the interface of nature and culture. Thus, the nature patrimonialization policies would be guided by the dynamics of the formation of cultural heritage. Indeed, now well documented, the concept of cultural heritage is a construction being done by companies for economic, ideological and disciplinary reasons. Based on a discursive potential, cultural heritage modifies the uses of objects and places by removing their primary function and by mentoring them with policies nourished by the ideology of conservation. The dissertation examines the dynamics of the natural environments patrimonialization policies in Quebec in the context of national parks. It is based on a methodology that borrows to the analysis of discourse and uses the case of the Jacques-Cartier National Park, which, during the 1970s, was at the heart of a controversy from which the first laws were born in Quebec in the conservation of natural heritage field.
