Abstract:
In the last decade, South Africa has frequently experienced electricity shortages. Conserving electricity is a sustainable means by which households can contribute to mitigating the problem. The main electricity supplier, Eskom, partners with the South African government to promote electricity conservation, particularly in households. For effective tailoring of promotional messages, market segmentation is needed. This study uses cluster analysis to segment and identify segment sizes and types of electricity conservation behaviors in South African households. It also profiles the segments according to sociodemographic characteristics and some economic and psychological drivers of conservation behaviors. We surveyed 629 electricity consumers in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Four segments were identified: devoted conservers (18%), unconcerned nonconservers (28.7%), curtailment-oriented conservers (29.3%), and efficiency-oriented consumers (24%). The article proposes germane strategies to be tailored by social marketers and policy makers to reach each of these segments.

Abstract:
The role of children's conceptions of conservation tasks was examined in this study. Specifically, this experiment assessed whether children's failure to conserve could be explained in terms of their inability to understand the experimenter's intentions, i.e. to test their knowledge. The children were tested using either the standard conservation of number task or an alternative version of the task. The tasks were presented in a context that provided the child with a reason to give a description of the task and to explain the experimenter's actions. Following the child's own description, specific questions were asked about their understanding of the task. For the analysis of the results, children were diagnosed as either conservers or nonconservers. Only a third of the conservers showed that they understood the experimenter's intentions. Moreover, the alternative version of the task significantly altered the children's conceptions of the task. The results indicate that understanding the experimenter's intentions is not a necessary prerequisite for successful performance on conservation tasks.

Abstract:
When using the closed, insulated pallet system (CIPS), it is desired to apply the fertilizers once at the beginning of planting and last through harvest. When doing so, the electrical conductivity (EC) of the root environment needs to be at a reasonable level. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of fertilizer conserver placement and increasing rate on the EC of the growth media. When delivering nutrients in such a manner, the fertilizer ions have limited surface area in contact with the root growth media that limits ion diffusion rate. Five fertilization rates, 15, 45, 60, 75, and 105 g per 1.5-L media pouch, were tested in a completely randomized arrangement. In each pouch, two fertilizer conservers were placed in the center of the lower half of media, each containing a different source of fertilizer. Tomato cv. `Pik Red' was used to test the growth response to treatment. At day 100, the ECs of the middle 5 cm stratum of the growth media for the 15–75 g treatments were not significantly different from each other. Their ECs ranged from 2.52 to 4.51 dS/m. However, middle layer in the 105g treatment was 12.97 dS/m, while EC for the layer immediately below it was 1.18 dS/m. Because there were no differences in shoot and fruit weights among all fertilization treatments, compensation nutrient uptake and water uptake specialization may have occurred in the high salinity and lower salinity, respectively. The data illustrate that delivery of nutrients in small conservers is a feasible approach for the CIPS. Only small amounts of fertilizer are required for a 100-day tomato crop grown in CIPS.

Abstract:
Fifty Brazilian children between the ages of 7 and 13, all number conservers, were individually given seven addition and four subtraction exercises. The children were asked to write down and do each exercise and then explain how the answer was reached. The results showed that: (a) counting was the preferred procedure; (b) the use of school-taught algorithms was rather limited; (c) some children decomposed numbers into tens and units and then worked at both levels, combining results subsequently; and (d) children rarely referred to previously obtained results when doing related exercises. Mathematics educators could profit from a knowledge of the procedures used naturally by children and the specific difficulties related to natural and to school-prescribed routines.

Abstract:
Piaget's work on number conservation and one-to-one correspondence has had a valuable impact on teachers' understandings of the development of mathematics concepts in young children. However, a potential misapplication is the tendency to use Piaget's tasks of conservation of number and one-to-one correspondence as a sort of “entrance exam” into classroom number work. Whereas children who can conserve participate fully in classroom number activities, non-conservers may receive no mathematics instruction at all. Or, they may passively observe instruction that is beyond their abilities while teachers wait for conservation to occur. This article proposes that teachers should examine the elements of mathematical understandings that precede conservation and one-to-one correspondence and tailor classroom instruction to benefit both conserving and nonconserving students.

Abstract:
Since the 19th century, a developing awareness of cultural patrimony has been accompanied by advances in conservation, by the growth of a body of literature on conservation, and by the establishment of bodies, including agencies at the international level, dedicated to conservation. But not everything can be preserved: choices have to be made of what most merits preservation. Art librarians are involved, both as conservers of the documentary heritage (which contributes to the ethos in which decisions are made) and, sometimes, as members of teams responsible for the preservation of artefacts and buildings. There is a need for specialists of all kinds who are involved in the preservation of the cultural patrimony to work closely together, to discuss priorities, and to ensure that nothing escapes attention.

Abstract:
Aerial photography is so fundamental an instrument of modern archaeology that we often take it for granted. But its methods are surprisingly specific and its most important experimental theatre was probably the territory of the Levant—and especially the rocky terrain of Jordan. The author, a prominent aerial archaeologist of our own day, takes time off to review the achievements of the pioneers, serving officers who established routes over the desert to deliver mail between Egypt and Iraq. The fabulous ancient landscape they discovered could only be appreciated through the low-level window provided by these slow-moving rickety machines and their intrepid pilots. In these days of jet travel, the precious basalt landscape is in danger of slipping off the agenda again—both for researchers and conservers.

Abstract:
This study investigates language change in the New Town of Livingston in Scotland, comparing the speech of original inhabitants of one of the villages swallowed up by the New Town with that of children brought up in the modern conurbation. The study focuses on three variables, two consonants characteristic of Scottish speech, the voiceless velar fricative and the labiovelar voiceless fricative, plus the innovation of TH-fronting. The situation is shown to be one of rapid and ongoing change in which there is a progressive loss of the Scots and Standard Scottish English pronunciation, with intermediate stages being observed in many of the young speakers. In comparison with girls, boys appear to be both innovators of change and conservers of local informal variants at the expense of standard variants.

Abstract:
AbstractWe studied the conservation scores of 21 schizophrenic and schizotypal children (aged 6;7–12;5 years) and 21 yoked normal mental age matches and their relationship to the Kiddie Formal Thought Disorder Scale measures. Like the normal children, the schizophrenic/schizotypal subjects were able to recognize the invariance of two dimensional space, number, and substance, but not of weight. Unlike the normal children, the schizophrenic/schizotypal children were poor conservers of continuous and discontinuous matter, and this was related to their illogical thinking scores. Age and IQ accounted for the conservation competence of the normal children. The conservation skills of the patients, however, were associated with the severity of their formal thought disorder scores, not with their age or IQ. The developmental approach employed in this study enabled further clarification of the cognitive parameters of formal thought disorder in middle childhood. We discuss the developmental, clinical, and possible information processing implications of these findings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A study to investigate the differences in cognitive development between sighted and visually impaired children in the Republic of China, as measured by Piagetian tasks of conservation, indicated that age and vision were two significant variables contributing to the attainment of conservation with young visually impaired children, who were more apt to be nonconservers; the order of difficulty of eight conservation tasks for the partially sighted children was more similar to that of the sighted children than to that of the blind children, with the blind children differing greatly from both the partially sighted and the sighted children; a one-to-four-year developmental lag in the attainment of conservation was found in blind children compared to the sighted and partially sighted children; blind children made up these development delays at the age of 11; and the explanations given by the conservers among the sighted, partially sighted and blind children were similar; the explanations given by the blind and partially sighted nonconservers, however, demonstrated more variability than those of the sighted nonconservers.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough crop diversity has been identified as essential to enhance global food security and adapt to climate change, high loss of genetic resources is occurring due to agricultural industrialization and market requirements. Value chain development is an emerging market strategy that seeks to simultaneously achieve agrobiodiversity conservation and economic goals, though little empirical evidence exists regarding the extent to which value chains encourage biodiversity maintenance. This study considers the conservation of native potatoes among households in the highlands of Peru where value chain development is being pursued to create market niches for certain native potato varieties. Utilizing a mixed-methods case study approach, the findings of this study indicate that the conservers of native varieties are the households with more endowed resource bases as well as those that sell native varieties in value chains. However, the findings suggest that value chains themselves likely have only a marginal effect on conservation. Native potato conservation and potato production for value chains exist as two separate livelihood activities, and households with more resources are best positioned to engage in both. While value chains allow households to capitalize on the economic value of certain native varieties, the production of other native varieties allows households to fulfill cultural values. Based on these findings, this study concludes that value chain opportunities for native varieties should continue to be identified but they alone are not an adequate strategy to conserve agrobiodiversity. Therefore, in addition to value chain development, a full suite of conservation schemes should be implemented simultaneously.

Abstract:
Purpose – Although social networking sites (SNS) are providing marketers a lot of information, it is also providing consumers with the ability to present their virtual identities, limiting the benefit of such information. The purpose of this paper is to understand how marketers can segment virtual consumers. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the literature is first conducted. Followed by a survey method, data from 258 consumers were analyzed using a combination of scales including best-worst scaling. Classes and other demographics, behavioral and psychographic covariates were determined using latent-class analysis. Findings – Findings show there exist three different segments based on values: self-conservers, social entertainers, and achievers. The results show how SNS consumers differ in their motivation to use social media, even when there is similarity in the uses (virtual behaviors) of SNS. Research limitations/implications – Analyzing behavior of virtual consumers can be limited by the fact that they are presenting their virtual identity. Psychographic metrics should be the focus of future research when dealing with online consumers, values and motivations provide a better way as they are more consistent than the virtual behavior. Practical implications – Practitioners should look for more ways to integrate SNS segments with traditional segments, values-segmentation can aid in this. Additionally, practitioners should maximize the information access benefits of SNS by focussing also on underlying motives to certain behaviors on SNS. Originality/value – This research value is derived from the fact that it is the first to perform values-segmentation on SNS. The results show that it is reliable and necessary when segmenting consumers on SNS.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Anaerobic bacteria ferment carbohydrates and amino acids to obtain energy for growth. Due to the absence of oxygen and other inorganic electron acceptors, the substrate of a fermentation has to serve as electron donor as well as acceptor, which results in low free energies as compared to that of aerobic oxidations. Until about 10 years ago, anaerobes were thought to exclusively use substrate level phosphorylation (SLP), by which only part of the available energy could be conserved. Therefore, anaerobes were regarded as unproductive and inefficient energy conservers. The discovery of electrochemical Na+ gradients generated by biotin-dependent decarboxylations or by reduction of NAD+ with ferredoxin changed this view. Reduced ferredoxin is provided by oxidative decarboxylation of 2-oxoacids and the recently discovered flavin based electron bifurcation (FBEB). In this review, the two different fermentation pathways of glutamate to ammonia, CO2, acetate, butyrate and H2 via 3-methylaspartate or via 2-hydroxyglutarate by members of the Firmicutes are discussed as prototypical examples in which all processes characteristic for fermentations occur. Though the fermentations proceed on two entirely different pathways, the maximum theoretical amount of ATP is conserved in each pathway. The occurrence of the 3-methylaspartate pathway in clostridia from soil and the 2-hydroxyglutarate pathway in the human microbiome of the large intestine is traced back to the oxygen-sensitivity of the radical enzymes. The coenzyme B12-dependent glutamate mutase in the 3-methylaspartate pathway tolerates oxygen, whereas 2-hydroxyglutaryl-CoA dehydratase is extremely oxygen-sensitive and can only survive in the gut, where the combustion of butyrate produced by the microbiome consumes the oxygen and provides a strict anaerobic environment. Examples of coenzyme B12-dependent eliminases are given, which in the gut are replaced by simpler extremely oxygen sensitive glycyl radical enzymes.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT: The region of Asturias, situated in the north east of the Iberian Peninsula, is administratively divided into 78 counties or municipalities, with the most highly populated of these being found on the coast. During the ancien régime, the geography and climatology of Asturias meant the sea was the main connection for the region. Foods such as cereals arrived at the ports in Gijón and Avilés which allowed for the demographic development of both these cities and other «smaller» seasisde towns ahead of the rest of the region. In central Asturias, many counties combined the resources that the sea had to offer with agriculture, turning their towns into satellites for the big ports. This is the case for Candás, the capital of the county Carreño, which was recognised as an important whaling port during the 16th century and was very wellknown in northern Europe. The industry of processing fishing products, which lead to the creation of canning factories in the 19th century, allowed the county a certain autonomous survival in comparison to larger councils, avoiding both demographic and economic decline. In the mid-18th century, the Ensenada cadastre gave a population of 985 which included surgeons, notaries, various landlords, an elementary school teacher, women who kneaded bread, farmworkers and many other professions related to the fishing industry and this study is vital in understanding the sociology of the municipality. In this paper, the aim is to provide a photograph of a specific year in the 18th century, 1752-53. We analysed the county´s family structures and labour patterns in this year and how it related to the economic mechanism in the region, drawing a comparison between the main rural zones and the urban centre.
