ABSTRACT It has long been known that Henricus Isaac (ca. 1450––1517) wrote mass-propers for Constance cathedral. These are preserved in his posthumously printed, three-volume collection entitled Choralis Constantinus. Yet the first generation of postwar Isaac researchers showed that the Choralis contains music not only for Constance but for the Imperial court as well. Since then several theories have been advanced regarding the intended recipients of parts of the Choralis repertory. The present paper assesses these conflicting theories. It concludes that with one small possible alteration, the

When discussing ‘How Should One Read a Book?’, Virginia Woolf describes the work of an author as ‘an attempt to make something as formed and controlled as a building‘, using architecture as an analogy for the structure of a literary work. The ‘formed and controlled‘ structures of Woolf‘s books are here explored through her 1927 novel To the Lighthouse, which she was writing around the same time as her essay on ‘How Should One Read a Book?‘ and for which she drew a diagram of its tripartite structure. While Woolf repeatedly uses imagery that juxtaposes transitory life with fixed buildings, her

The connections between the medieval kingdom of Scots and Irish earldom of Ulster have remained elusive. One of the most intriguing points of contact occurred in 1205×10, when the first earl of Ulster, Hugh II de Lacy (d. 1242), granted churches within his Irish lordship to the cathedral priory of St Andrews. Exploring de Lacy's links to the bishop of St Andrews, William Malveisin, and the constable of Scotland, Alan of Galloway, this article suggests that the gift to St Andrews was part of the earl's bid to secure King William the Lion, as an ally in the North Channel region. It is about positioning the tower, one of the first manifestations of the Renaissance on Spanish soil, in its rightful place from its aesthetic reinterpretations in the arts, a living and symbolic legacy that establishes a link with generati

Constant J. Mews's groundbreaking work reveals the wide world of medieval letters. Looking beyond the cathedral and the cloister for his investigations, and taking a broad view of intellectual practice in the Middle Ages, Mews demands that we expand our horizons as we explore the history of ideas. Alongside his cutting-edge work on Abelard, he has been a leader in the study of medieval women writers, paying heed to Hildegard and Heloise in particular. Mews has also expanded our knowledge of medieval music, and its theoretical foundations. In Mews' Middle Ages, the world of ideas always belongs

Abstract London, Jamaica, and Madras provided the first opportunities for the Royal Academy to engage in public artistic projects. In 1773, under the auspices of the Academy, six history painters offered to decorate St Paul’s Cathedral in London with scripture paintings, free of charge. By the mid-eighteenth century, St Paul’s-a city church, not a royal peculiar like Westminster Abbey-was a public space in that it was included in London tours, and charged for the view of specific sights such as the geometrical staircase or the great model. Previously, the only decoration of the Cathedral had b

"Affirmation means that the party seeking relief is aware of the facts which give rise to the right to rescind and that, by words or conduct, he has decided not to exercise that right. Typical examples of affirmation include the situation in which the buyer of goods, after becoming aware of the falsity of a misrepresentation, continues to use them. Similarly lapse of time may be taken as evidence of affirmation as may an agreement to accept a cure of defects in the subject matter of the contract. In Leaf v International Galleries, the plaintiff purchased from the defendant a painting entitled ‘Salisbury Cathedral’ for £85. The defendant had innocently, but falsely, represented that the painting was by John Constable, but, five years after the purchase, it was discovered that this was not the case. The plaintiff sought to return the picture to the defendants and to recover the price he had paid. The Court of Appeal refused to grant rescission of the contract on the ground that the buyer, due to the lapse of time, must be taken to have accepted the goods sold under the contract: Leaf v International Galleries [1950] 2 KB 86, CA, p 89."
