An optical-electronic system for Faraday rotation measurement is designed and constructed to evaluate the verdet constant of magnetic -optical glasses. The works include the optical bench setup and development of software. PbO-Bi2O3-B2O3 glasses systems were fabricated and characterized by using the self-constructed optical bench and the obtained Verdet constants @632.8nm for glass PBB1 was verified by using a commercial powermeter (as detector). The developed measurement system showed characteristics of low cost, small size and accurate.

Abstract:
Three kinds of Bi-related materials co-doped silica optical fibers (BRDFs), including Bi/Al, Bi/Pb, and Bi/Er co-doped fibers, were fabricated using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD). Then, the effect of irradiation on the optical properties of BRDFs was investigated. The experimental results showed that the fluorescence intensity, the fluorescence lifetime of BRDFs at the 1150 nm band, increased significantly with low-dose treatment, whereas it decreased with a further increase in the radiation dose. In addition, the merit Mα values of the BRDFs, a ratio of useful pump absorption to total pump absorption, decreased with an increase of the radiation doses. The Verdet constants of different doped fibers increased up to saturation level with increases in the radiation dose. However, for a Bi-doped fiber, its Verdet constant decreased and the direction of Faraday’s rotation changed under low-dose radiation treatment. In addition, the Verdet constant increase of the Bi-doped silica fiber was much faster than that of other single mode fiber (SMF) and Pb-doped silica fibers treated with high-dose radiation. All of these findings are of great significance for the study of the optical properties of BRDFs.

This is the Unchanging Utility Solution and it claims that, contrary to appearances, our values do not change over time; rather, what changes is what obtains for us the things we value. The chapter argues that this will not work. The three texts of this chapter are taken from the posthumous volume Langage, Histoire, une même théorie (Lagrasse: Verdier, 2012). They represent the ambition of Meschonnic’s work from its very beginning, that is, to develop a theory of language that establishes a new basis for all the humanities and social sciences by overthrowing the reign of the sign in our episteme. He focuses here on the connection between language and history through his notion of historicity which is a situatedness that constantly leaves this situation and remains active in the presence. Only poetics, an awareness of what language is and does, he argues, enables to think beyond the sign and to develop a critical theory, that is, a theory aware of its situatedness. Meschonnic connects language to historicity, the political and the ethical.

There was a time, fortunately some years ago now, when to undertake rapid kinetic measurements using a stopped-flow spectrophotometer verged on the heroic. One needed to be armed with knowledge of amplifiers, light sources, oscilloscopes etc. and ideally one’s credibility was greatly enhanced were one to build one’s own instrument. Analysis of the data was similarly difficult. To obtain a single rate constant might involve a wide range of skills in addition to those required for the chemical/biochemical manipulation of the system and could easily include photography, developing prints and considerable mathematical agility. Now all this has changed and, from the point of view of the scientist attempting to solve problems through transient kinetic studies, a good thing too! Very high quality data can readily be obtained by anyone with a few hours training and the ability to use a mouse and ‘point and click’ programs. Excellent stopped -flow spectrophotometers can be bought which are reliable, stable, sensitive and which are controlled by computers able to signal-average and to analyse, in seconds, kinetic progress curves in a number of ways yielding rate constants, amplitudes, residuals and statistics. Because it is now so easy, from the technical point of view, to make measurement and to do so without an apprenticeship in kinetic methods, it becomes important to make sure that one collects data that are meaningful and open to sensible interpretation. There are a number of pitfalls to avoid. The emphasis of this article is, therefore, somewhat different to that written by Eccleston (1) in an earlier volume of this series. Less time will be spent on consideration of the hardware, although the general principles are given, but the focus will be on making sure that the data collected means what one thinks it means and then how to be sure one is extracting kinetic parameters from this in a sensible way. With the advent of powerful, fast computers it has now become possible to process very large data sets quickly and this has paved the way for the application of ‘rapid scan’ devices (usually, but not exclusively, diode arrays), which allow complete spectra to be collected at very short time intervals during a reaction.
