Full textDuring Ancient Times and the Middle Ages, knowledge of the human body was premised not only on its linguistic representation but also, by the middle of the XIVth Century, on the production of images: this was the period when practices of dissection came to the fore as the unavoidable means for anatomical research. My thesis deals with the historical evolution which allowed the body to be seen in a scientific light and gave it aesthetic visibility. Relying on the model of meta-language, I study the transmission of anatomical knowledge and how the human body became both a linguistic and a philosophical concept. Indeed, traditional structures of knowledge changed and thereby prepared an important turning point for the development of theory and practice. The first illustrated anatomical treatises, based on dissection, gave birth to a veritable "imagistic methodology" and prepared the "visibility" that Andrea Vesalius and his followers gave to the human body. This visibility underscores not only the body’s scientific meaning but also its metaphorical potential. I then focus on the relationship between artists and anatomists: the thesis closes with the anatomy lesson as a full-fledged artistic genre which not only gives scientific visibility to the human body but also allows it to be "opened up" as an artistic object

Full textPhysical appearance is seen here as the result of a construction in which the logic of social structures (the constraints of appearance control, codes, fashion, and economy) is combined with the logic of social individuals (strategies, choices). This construction operates by the "process of fabrication" of the physical appearance, the various levels of which are analyzed : practices, norms and values. As the result, the various ways of "managing" physical appearance and the different morals which lie behind them are brougt to light. The dynamics of this process are examined through a selection of every day social situations (routine or exceptional) and the definitions given to these by the social individuals. Finally the theory of physical appearance and its investment is put forward. The general methodology used in this study was : document analysis, questionnaires, semi-directive interviews observations (participant or not)

It is the « product » of a social « Construction » throughout the life cycle of individuals. Born in a state of « animality » and « wildness », the newborn child is supposed to be Saqra. This term refers to the sphere of non-social, and wild nightlife and it is opposed to the human, domesticated and diurnal sphere. It is therefore necessary for the newborn to be transformed in a social human being-person, man (qhari) or woman (warmi). This process of humanization is obtained throughout the life cycle rituals

Full textThis text presents an ethnography of the Urarina shamanic system (Peruvian Amazonia). To this end, it describes the elements characterising this system and their mode of distribution at the core of a body of technological and ritual knowledge which is developed from the central function that this people attributes to the manipulation of particular substances; both material - bodily fluids, foods, vegetable dyes - and immaterial - thoughts, memories, chants, etc. In addition, the text will analyse the modalities of access to the shamanic function, characterized by a certain horizontality and the absence of restrictions vis-àvis gender or age, as well as by the freedom to share and spread therapeutical knowledge. If one considers the detailed study of Urarina physiology and the dynamics linked to its fluids, it becomes evident that this knowledge of the body and its functioning permits us to understand the actions of transfer and contamination of substances, as well as the implications of the activities of thought and memory together with the conjunction of processes dedicated to the construction of a human being. In particular, the idea of the potential permeability of the human body will be treated in depth, as this influences the acquisition and correct utilisation of new kowledge by the individual, as well as the exercise of shamanic practice, both during the first phases of the lifecycle and in the framework of therapeutic action. Finally, there will be an examination of the extent to which shamanic intervention on, or through, involved bodies - whether human or otherwise - is the result of a complex action of contamination, by which it is possible not only to act directly upon the component materials of the person, but to induce a transfer of his or her subjectivity

Full textAt Renault, to fulfill upstream studies, teams in charge of crashworthiness use very simple models to pre-size the vehicle. Today, these models are built from the physical behavior of only one or some reference vehicles. They work and allow to size the project. But today, the company wishes to build its upstream models using all its vehicles. In other words, it wishes to get an automatic method to analyze crashtests simulations to capitalize their results in a database of simplified models. To meet this goal, we decide to use the multi-body model theory. We develop a method to analyze crashtests simulations in order to extract the data required to build a surrogate multi-body model : CrashScan. The analysis process implemented in CrashScan can be split into three major steps. The first one allows to identify the low deformed zones on a crashtest simulation. Then, we can build the topological graph of the future surrogate model. The second step is to analyze the relative kinematics between the low deformed zones : major directions and deformation modes (e.g. crushing or bending) are identified analysing relative movements. The last step is to analyze strengths and moments located between the low deformed zones, viewed in the frames associated to the major directions of deformations in function of the deformations. This allows us to identify equivalent Bouc-Wen hysteretic models. These models have three parameters that we can use : a stiffness, a threshold strength before plastification and a strain of hardening. These parameters can directly be used by upstream studies experts. Finally, we build multi-body models for three different use case. We compare them to their reference over the results they produce for the upstream criteria : models generated with CrashScan seems to grant the precision and the fidelity required to be used during automotive development's upstream phases. To continue this research work and get an industrial solution, there are still some locks to lift, the main ones are : synthesis of any movement into six elementary ones and multi-body synthesis on elements other than beams

Full textAn exploratory survey that aimed to identify the role of caregivers' touching enabled to mformulate following questions : What is the impact of caregiver's touching to the construction of their body-psyche link, does it represent a way likely to join body to language ? Is touching a valuable resource in filling a psychological lack or emptiness ? Can touching be a mediator in introducing a differentiation between protagonists ? How does the caregiver combine prohibition and / or permission on touching in his or her inner experience ? The tools used in answering these various questions were of three categories : semi-structured interviews which allowed the subjects to express both their motivations when starting their training and their internship experiences with either patients or hospital hierarchy and/or staff ; a projective test by mean of Stein’s sentences completion to which many other focused sentences, about representations of touching as well as of body and about the link between both items, were added ; a photo-language that enabled the subjects to narrate a story related to the topic of this research. The population consisted of a sample of three nurse students in their final year of training that lasts four years. On a theoretical level, this research is founded by concepts developed by D. Anzieu (Me-skin, prohibition on touching, psychic envelopes), D. W. Winnicott (holding and handling), P. Aulagnier (pictogram) and from works on touching by T. Field from Miami University

Full textHow does the passageway from a corporeity socially allotted to a subjectively suitable corporeity take place? Observation and analysis take into account physical activities, food, dress practices and esthetics which define the privileged stakes of the social construction of the body, as shown through a follow-up within a period of time. To seize the post-modern somatic culture, the examination of 274 press magazines enables to distinguish six body esthetic models. An ethnographic study of Health Centers makes it possible to objectify the types of institutional order which conveys these models. Thanks to 57 interviews, the heterogeneity of the body practices which play with these models (and play about it) takes the contours of a typology where fragile and anachronistic bodies (those of the disease or old age) are confronted with bodies in search of physical excellence (in which the sense breaks up according to the gender), without forgetting the body-symptoms (worked by the bulimia and the anorexia) and the bodies burdens (of which obesity is the typical figure)

Full textTunisia is a meeting point of different, sometimes antagonistic, cultural models -arab-islamic, patriarchal, eastern and western - where there exists a range of norms that pertain to the female body. From the perspective of purity norms, the aim of this socio-anthropological research is to shed light on the modes of construction of feminity through the body and appearance in tunisain teenage girls. These core issues raise several fundamental questions that structure this study. Adolescence being an important time for asserting sexual identity, and the body being the locus for asserting one's presence in the world, how do adolescent girls mark their development as a woman on their skin by taking into account the social categories of "pure" and "impure" ? What are the practical applications of the purity laws in the bodily experiences of adolescents ? How do the various cultural models combine in the everyday lives of adolescent girls ? Are norms of bodily pureness interiorised and incorporated without resistance by the adolescent girls ? The notion of purity is approached in the world. The different forms that relationship to the body and appearance can take in adolescent girls show that they reinterpret and negotiate these behavioural codes. Each in her own way fits them into a long process of identity construction. Their bodily experiences are decoded by a comprehensive approach in order to bring out the repercussions of the purity on their life experiences

Full textBased on an analysis of the biographical traditions compiled and preserved by Diogenes Laertius, this thesis assesses the significance of anecdotes depicting the body of philosophers in the development of the figure of an ideal philosopher and in these philosopher’ building of their own persona. Whilst ancient philosophers are primarly known to us through texts and doctrinal systems, the insights into their bodily pratcices and their reflections on the subject – diet, physical activity, clothing health – which are reported in ancient biographical testimonies are also worth investigating. This study examines the extent to which and the different ways in which the body can be ssen as the field of practice for the theories and for the philosopher’s relationship to their own mortal body (disease, old age and death). The investigation also provides a pragmatic reading of the work of Diogene Laertius, considered as an author and not merely as a compiler

Full textThis study, rooted in physical and sport education, contemplates the body development process of high school students who have started a learning sequence of step practising, within the framework of the CP5 – own competence n° 5. Starting from a holistic approach of the body, which is simultaneously living, experienced and described, the porosity between those three dimensions is deciphered for six high school students. The exploration paths of this thesis are articulated around an epistemological rooting in emersiology, where crossed scientific observations offer an opportunity at tackling the student’s body experience, so as to set up new educational and professional paths for the student to be aware of his/her own body. Several access paths, with self-confronting over a background of audiovisual traces in the first and third persons, and measuring the heart beatings via a cardio frequency-meter, contribute to defining the high school student’s capacity body. The nature of the knowledge built up and updated in the course of the classes speaks in favor of the sensitive perception’s acuity, as a complement to an intense practicing whose aim is to improve the aerobics capabilities. The different results illustrate the way in which the high school student’s esthesiological repertory increases his/her interoceptive cartography, by activation and sensitive awakening, while displaying as a consequence the building up of perceptive know-hows. By questioning two differentiating teaching paths through how his/her effort is felt, the high school students’ esthesiological and sensitive heterogeneity is revealed. While making it possible to singularly assess the living body’s capabilities through the high school student’s aerobics performance in step, these research works incite teachers to co-build an attentive listening attitude towards their bodies by the students, so that their trust in what they experiment is better and favorable to the development of their persons

For some people it will be an educational tool, for others a way to be healthy or happy to everyday life. While it is interesting to corne to question the investment of different people who are physically active, we will limit ourselves to the most popular forms, that is to say, the various investments of children during their evolution and until such they become or not high-level athlete. We will not forget the adolescent period, important point in choosing a career of a sportsman. The investment of high-level sport has corne to mark the start of our research. We will try to show that the concept of sublimation applies perfectly. Sublimate his impulses (aggressive) would be the key to performance. This assumption would need to have a broader look. Sport is not just an individual investment. And if we have to question the notion of sublimation, we have to take into consideration all of the Freudian notion, both its instinctuel facet and its civilizational facet. Thus, from a historical, philosophical and sociological research, we will try to show that physical activities have always been a pleasure to Human but also a powerful tool to join the social body. Sport would create a collective affiliation

Full textThe use of virtual humans has spread in various activities in recent years.Beyond virtual surgery, virtual bodies are increasingly used to design medical devices, vehicles, and daily life hardware more generally. They also turn out to be extraordinary supports to learn anatomy.Recent movies (Avatar, Lord of the Rings, etc) demonstrated that anatomy and biomechanics can be used to design high-quality characters. However, reproducing the behavior of anatomical structures remains a complex task, and a great amount and variety of knowledge is necessary for setting up high quality simulations. This makes the modeling of human body for simulation purposes an open problem, a tedious task, but also a fascinating research subject.Through this PhD, we address the problem of the construction of biomechanical models of the musculoskeletal systems for several domains : animation, biomechanics and teaching. Our goal is to simplify the entire process of model design by making it more intuitive and faster. Our approach is to address each difficulty : the representation and use of anatomical knowledge, the geometrical modeling and the efficient simulation of the musculoskeletal system thanks to three novel contributions introduced during these research works. Our first contribution focuses on the biomechanical construction of a hybrid model of lumbar spine. In this work, we show that hybrid approaches that combine both rigid body systems and finite element models allow interactive simulations, accurate, while respecting the principles of anatomy and mechanics. Our second contribution addresses the problem of the complexity of anatomical, physiological and functional knowledge.Based on a novel ontology of anatomical functions of the human body, we introduce a novel pipeline to automatically build models that simulate physiological functions of our bodies. The ontology allows us to extract detailed knowledge using simple queries. The outputs of these queries are used to set up simulation models of the functional aspects as they were formalized and described by anatomists. Finally our third contribution, the anatomy transfer, allows the mapping of available geometrical and mechanical models to the morphology of any specific individual. This novel registration method enables the automatic construction of the internal anatomy of any character defined by his skin, by transferring organs from a reference character. It allows to overcome the need to re-construct these geometries for each new simulation, and it contributes to accelerate the simulations setup for a range of people with different morph

Full textIn this thesis, we focus on the bilinear complexity of multiplication in any degree $n$ extension of the finite field $ F_{q}$, which is closely related to the tensor rank of multiplication in $ F_{q^n} $. The evaluation-interpolation type algorithm introduced by D.V and G.V Chudnovsky in 1987, is the basis of all algorithmic technique providing for now, the lower asymptotic and uniform bounds for the bilinear complexity. So far, the strategy to obtain these lower bounds was to fix the degree of places while increasing the genus of algebraic function fields. However, the study of the effective construction associated with this kind of strategy was until now neglected because of an obstacle related to the construction of a degree $n$ point, identified par Shparlinski, Tsfasman and Vladut in 1992. We present a new strategy which consists in fixing the genus of algebraic function fields while increasing the degree of places. Applying this strategy to the elliptic function fields, we show on the one hand that the tensor rank of multiplication in $ F_{q^n} $ is quasi-linear in $ n $, and on the other hand we prove that the construction of bilinear multiplication algorithms with this strategy is feasible in polynomial time. We also show how to construct explicitly these algorithms over $ F_{q^n} $ for large $n$ by illustrating the construction with an example. Finally, we establish the first asymmetric construction of the Chudnovsky type algorithm

The ballet dancer represents an unreal figure, a fantasy from ballet and the most stereotypical image of the professional dancer in children socialising during their spare time and mother’s educational strategies ? The socio-anthropological approach supported by a historical contribution aim to bring comprehensive elements on what ballet dancers really do when they enter the « women house » that provide dancing schools. Interviewed mothers seem to sometimes speak with a single voice. Being well aware of gender stereotypes occurring in our society, suggesting this activity to their daughters may be a way for them to offer the most recent form of action. Ballet dancing appears to be a « profitable » activity. The display of femininity associated and learning other transposable knowledges fit within the framework of a much more global project: it’s an investment in the future of schooling, occupation, social issues, health, culture, family, etc… All will be decided in relations between: what will be positive in this practice, gaining femininity strategies, and what will be negative, such as gender stereotypes paroxysm. Rich in assets and excellent knowledge of societies expectations towards them, new generations could re write the social rules

We fixe embedding degree and CM discriminant and generate complete famillies parametrized by polynomials. The thesis consists in two parts. In the first part (chapter 1, chapter 2) , we propose a method of choosing primitive elements for the Brezing-Weng method, and give some examples breaking the records of rho-value of some existing families when the imbedding degrees are 16, 22, 28 and 46. In the second part (chapter 3, chapter 4), we generalize the Brezing-Weng method to the case of abelian surfaces and also the method of choosing primitive elements to generate complete families of abelian surfaces suitable for pairing-based cryptography

Full textThis thesis concerns the complex smooth representation theory of reductive p-adic groups Among them, supercuspidal representations play an eminent part because they are the building blocks for all the classification and convey an important arithmetical content ; nonetheless they are difficult to build and classify. Along the years the method of construction for those representations kept improving, in particular through the work of Bushnell and Kutzko in the nineties, under the name « theory of types ». This theory was later sharpened by Shaun Stevens who produced an exhaustive construction of supercuspidal representations of classical p-adic groups - orthogonal special, symplectic, unitary -- assuming the p-adic field has odd residual characteristic. We work here on p-adic Spin groups they are simply connected covers of special orthogonal groups, actually two-fold covers - in odd residual characteristic. This thesis provides a construction of supercuspidal representations of Spin groups which extends Shaun Stevens's construction for classical groups. The construction, as Stevens's, relies on the notions of semi-simple strata, semi-simple characters and semi-simple types. The thesis turns next to the problem of exhaustion. Shaun Stevens has proven that his construction of supercuspidal representations is exhaustive. So far we do not know whether our construction for Spin groups is such. We show, as did Shaun Stevens, that any supercuspidal representation of a Spin group contains a skew semi-simple stratum and further a skew semi¬simple character. It is more difficult to show that it contains also a cuspidal semi-simple type, we only give some partial results in that direction

Based on freudian texts - and, more specifically, in accordance with contemporary psychoanalytical approaches - and, we shall emphasize the conceptof adolescence as an operation requiring a new configuration in relation to the Other as well as the task of reconstructing the body. Our research shall explore the nature of diary writing as it is praticticed by contemporary girls. .

Full textThis thesis deals with two problems in algebraic geometry. The first one is the comparison of tropical and algebraic geometry. In particular, we study the relationship between incidence configurations, Cramer's rule and the notion of resultant. We introduce the notion of geometric construction and we transfer, under some assumptions, classical incidence theorems to the tropical framework, such as Pappus, Fano of Cayley-Bacharach theorems. The second part relates to hypercircles. These curves where introducedby Andradas, Recio and Sendra, that are used in the problem of computing reparametrizations of rational curves with optimal algebraic coefficients from a given non optimal parametrization. We study the Weil variety in the parametric case (hyperquadric), the geometry of hypercircles and we provide an algorithm to compute an optimal reparametrization using only affine reparametrization of the curve

Full textResulting from an ethnographic survey carried out from 2009 to 2015 with a "Transpédégouine" ("TPG") group, this thesis is interested in the conditions (social, gendered, sexual) and in the socio-biographical effects of the "dyke" engagement within this collective. Firstly, it seeks to recall the biographical trajectories and socializing experiences of "dykes" from childhood until they enter the group "TPG", analyzing their gender socialization as children, their school careers, their sexual socialization and their feminist and homosexual politicization. While studying the social conditions of the construction of female homosexuality, it shows the class, gender and sexuality co-determination process in the politicization and engagement of "dykes." This work explores then the "TPG" socialization by restoring the modes of appropriation differentiated from the logics and the standards of the group taking into consideration historical socialization and current position of the "dykes". Far from being confined to strictly militant activities, the study of this groupal socialization also includes a set of practices generally related to the fields of the private and intimate (housing, food, hygiene, sexuality, friendship and emotional relationships) then revealing modes of politization "from the bottom" and specific forms of protest of the sexual and gender order, remote from legitimate forms of political participation. This research is finally interested in the impacts of this engagement on biographical trajectories. Beyond the possibilities of rehabilitating the gendered body and investing in a specific "dyke" mode of sexuality, engagement in the group limits the effects of economic precarisation. Through groupal practices of "getting by" and community solidarity, the "TPG" group functions indeed as a framework of material preservation and enhancement of its existence. It also allows the "dykes" to ennoble the shifts between downgrading situations (professional and economic) and experiences of ascending cultural mobility (permitted by academic achievement and activism), and thus represents a symbolic reclassification support. Through the restitution of a dense material, the unveiling of daily practices and the account of individual and collective experiences that mark the trajectories, this thesis seeks to understand more broadly the springs of this sexual minority and dissident social grouping, and the possibilities of maintaining oneself in certain margins of the social space

Full textMaxillofacial Prosthetics (MFP) is often defined as the art and science of artificially reconstructing the face after mutilation or dysmorphism. Historical and social anthropology leads us to reconsider this profession in terms of ‟professional culture” focused around a highly symbolic anatomical entity, the face, and another functional organ full of sense, the hand. In this research, rich in bibliographic references drawn from anthropology, sociology, history, arts and medicine, and nourished by an ethnographic enquiry among various French practitioners, most particularly in the MFP department of Toulouse hospital, complemented by open and semi-structured interviews, the author brings to light a broad palette of knowledge, most of which is empirical or not formally expressed, that composes and shapes the profile of an MFP specialist. Beyond this, a study of how such knowledge is transmitted highlights the importance of a selective, filial, master-assistant relationship, close to that frequently found in the trade guilds of old and which guides the young practitioner along the road to professional competence. This research in historical and social anthropology brings together various branches of anthropology : those of learning and knowledge of the body and health, a better understanding of sociocultural considerations of the discipline and an amelioration of the care given to disfigured patients

Full textThe purpose of this work was to study the interactions between emotion, cognition and movement in terms of approach-avoidance emotional dimension integrated on the production of a voluntary whole body movement: the preparation and the selection of gait initiation’s motor programs. An integrative model has been built in order to articulate four theories: those relating to the cognitive control of the movement, to the biphasic organisation of emotion, to the conflict monitoring and to the perceptual load. First, results provide new insights about gait initiation: this movement has an emotional significance in terms of its approach-avoidance direction. This movement production is dependent on the emotional context (pleasant/unpleasant) in which there is provided. Moreover, this dependance is even more important than emotional influence on reaction time and on the magnitude of the motor response of the medio-lateral axis could not be modulated by the implementation of cognitive (high level of cognitive control) and perceptual (high level of perceptual load) processes. In typical button press tasks, these processes are used to modulate the interactions between emotion and movement. In addition, results obtained on the approach-movement direction demonstrated a specificity of the anteroposterior postural control, since the emotional influence on its magnitude has been modulated (attenuated) by these same cognitive and perceptual processes

Full textTraffic barriers in bridge construction are specially designed devices that are carefully selected and connected to the bridge deck to redirect errant vehicles safely into the flow of traffic and prevent them from proceeding down a non-driveable batter. Current North American bridge design standards require that the selected traffic barrier system must be crash-tested at full-scale to ensure a safe design standard. Minimal modifications of already crash-tested and approved traffic barrier system are however allowed if its performance can be demonstrated by an appropriate engineering simulation and analysis. The finite element analysis method is an effective tool to predict the response of traffic barriers under vehicle-induced forces. The present research aims at developing generic connector systems (deck and curb-mounted) that allows the attachment of a standard already-crash-tested post-and-rail barrier to orthotropic steel decks. This research involves both static analysis and dynamic simulation of crash-test using ABAQUS and LS-DYNA. The ability of the attachment system to transfer the impact loads without compromising the structural integrity of the bridge deck or the barrier itself would be examined in detail. Typical assembly were developed with strengthening plates to connect the traffic barriers directly on the orthotropic steel deck and with a module to connect it on a steel curb. Similarities existing between the results of the different analyses show that the static loads specified in Canadian standard CSA S6-06 are appropriate for the modification of the anchorage of traffic barriers to connect them to orthotropic steel decks. Keywords : Traffic barrier, orthotropic steel deck, bridge, connector system, finite element analysis.

Full textIn the french context of nursing care teaching, this thesis aims at conceiving nursing as a process of mediation and communication notably between especially patients and care givers. The identified communication process involving values, self-identification and representation help to build up and express the caring professionalism. The background documents are organized from 5 types of data which are media focuses, caring acts, professional situation reports, life stories and monographs. These data allow the comprehension of the communication items which are used in the health care context, also the effects of the observed practice meanings and finally the care giver way of acting and relating. The carers build medical encounter and distance relationships. This is presented as the “world-body” concept. As part of the new care exercises and the nurse teaching evolution, the health care organizations are faced with strategic questionings. In order to answer those interrogations, the central concept of “communicating-care” is developed. This leads to define the care act as a meaningful and complex interaction system. This concept tries to formalize mediation areas which are specific to the building of a relevant and coherent caring professionalism as regards with looking at the new challenges in nurse care teaching

Full textResearch questions the socialization processes that make up sexual and love tastes, focusing on a homosexual population. At the heart of this question we have placed a principle of variation of social background of origin and sex which allows to highlight different socializing configurations which would contribute to forming sexual and romantic tastes for the same sex. Research leads to dealing with various questions related to socialization, such as that of the instances of socialization which build the relationship to sexuality, sexual practices, or even that of the temporality of socializations and the force of incorporation of practices, representations and Believes. The survey is based mainly on repeated biographical interviews with the same respondents, the aim of which is to retrace the social and sexual trajectories of the respondents, as well as on observations in an associative environment

Full textTheoretical framework. In a Senegalese transitional context, expressing itself by a biocultural interface, it is important to assess the impact of the phenomenon of urbanization on the development of overweight, but also on its social and cultural conceptions and its psychosocial feeling in a changing process. Methodology. To do this, we first conducted a qualitative focus group survey and a second study by qualitative semi-structured interviews (In the city of Dakar and at Gandiaye in the rural community of Thiomby from the Kaolack region) in arepresentative sample of the senegalese adult population living in the wolophone space from the center of the country ; and a third comparative quantitative study between the region of Kaolack and Dakar agglomeration. Results. By the qualitative aspects, we note that the big person is no longer associated to wealth (food/diet), well-being (death-disease/health) and reproductive output (aesthetics/sexuality), but to idleness (food /diet), dysfunction (death-disease/health) and sexual undesirability (aesthetics/sexuality). By the quantitative aspects, we note a significant increase of overweight with a social valorisation of overweight as a risk factor to the development of this syndrome. In addition, the modern standards of body are spreading, thus, the desire to lose weight is associated with a poor esteem of its appearance.Conclusion. The Senegalese leave a model where the body subjected to an animist cult of vital energy was mostly exposed to thin, for a model where the body subjected to a modern cult of reason will be mostly exposed to overweight

Full textWhile the standard treatment for rectal cancer (neoadjuvant treatment with rectal excision) has spared neither the psyche nor the body, few studies have focused on psychosocial adjustment of patients who have received this treatment. Following treatment, the body is often perceived as deviating from the norm, generating feelings of shame. The first objective of this thesis was to adapt, and validate, for the French population, a body image shame scale. The second step consisted in comparing body image shame, quality of life, body image, and psychological distress between rectal cancer patients treated by surgery with temporary stoma or local excision (a new treatment approach proposed for patients with rectal cancer after a good clinical response to neoadjuvant therapy). Since standard treatment leads to more psychosocial problems, in a third study, we examined the effects of standard treatment on psychological distress and body image. The temporary stoma period represents a specific time during which patients seem to temporarily suspend their lives. Thus, the fourth study of this thesis investigated how the role of time perspective might act as a determinant of quality of life for rectal cancer patients. The time perspective construct provides keys in order to improve quality of life of rectal cancer patients. Quality of life alterations persist several months after the end of treatments but, to date, few studies have focused on this topic. The fifth goal was to assess colorectal cancer survivors’ quality of life two years after diagnosis of colorectal cancer according to their stoma status (reversed or never formed). Participants with a reversed stoma score lower on the physical quality of life scale than participants without stoma. Patients with rectal cancer experience psychosocial challenges. To deal with these challenges, psychosocial interventions focused on emotional needs of rectal cancer patients treated by standard treatment should be proposed. There is a lack of this type of intervention for this population. The sixth purpose was to develop and test a psychosocial intervention which seems to be more in line with a preventive approach. Taken together, these works may contribute to improve the support offered to these patients, even though the importance of promoting research to deal with the psychosocial challenges of this treatment must be underlined

Full textThis thesis presents an action creation research project whose main axis analyses the relationship to the identity process at work in the pictorial activity. An internal locus of experimentation becomes a painting “space“which is no longer approached from an aesthetic point of view but more from a subjectivist and constructivist one. My approach is built around a main axis: the parallel between the construction of the painting and the construction of an individual become creative autonomous "subject" as E.Kant understands it. This relationship between artistic practice and the process of individuation (as defined by CG Jung) leads to the paradox of an "ethics of the relationship" based on self study that I have developed more thoroughly to provide both a theoretical framework and a teaching method in accompanying painting. Accessible to all, this method accompanies people with mental disability, mental illness or autism but our thesis undertakes a more comprehensive reflection on painting as embodied in a musical body as a vector of identity. A new architecture of painting as made up of "sludge", "deposits" supports this musical reading with metaphors of renewal. A theory of miss is seen here as an educational vector. It comes in the form of games against major obstacles favoring the “motor imagination” induced by shape and color both in the one that is accompanying and the one accompanied. We offer a mutually constructive painting space as a way out of psychological, sometimes social closure and stress, to open up to the world and transform ourselves

Full textThe study of the number of rational points of a curve defined over a finite field naturally falls into two cases: when the genus is small (typically g<=50), and when it tends to infinity. We devote one part of this thesis to each of these cases. In the first part of our study, we explain how to compute the equation of any abelian covering of a curve defined over a finite field. For this we use explicit class field theory provided by Kummer and Artin-Schreier-Witt extensions. We also detail an algorithm for the search of good curves, whose implementation provides new records of number of points over the finite fields of order 2 and 3. In the second part, we study a trace formula of Hecke operators on quaternionic modular forms, and we show that the associated Shimura curves of the form naturally form recursive sequences of asymptotically optimal curves over a quadratic extension of the base field. Moreover, we then prove that the essential contribution to the rational points is provided by supersingular points

Full textTo analyze the construction of platic surgery, it is necessary to understand what conditions of possibility enabled this "futile" surgery to be practiced and to answer the question of what made operations on healthy bodies socially acceptable. Our work had to widen its object to the sociohistorical analysis of construction of the specialty using the matrix of aesthetic surgery : plastic surgery. Also, it was necessary for us to work on the history of the relation of cosmetic surgery to its matrix and on the fights of competition between plastics surgeons and aesthetics surgeons whose goal is the definition of the legitimate practice, on the basis of its contours, of its teaching and the construction of an esthetics market with its various components. Finally, the "futile" object became an analyzer of the transformations of the surgical space which makes it possible to observe the struggles and competitions between surgeons and doctors

Full textThe aim of thesis is to study the development of the prison between 1791 and 1848. Part One (‘The philosophical and legislative origins of the penal prison') investigates the philosophical underpinning of penal law during the period, and, in particular, considers the first purpose-built places of detention constructed by the French state. Part Two (‘Consequences of the rise of the individual prison cell in France: spaces and responses) presents an analytical approach to studying the prison as an architectural space, especially the evolution of the ideology behind the prison cell and the formal-spatial qualities of the cell itself. The thesis necessarily draws from a variety of disciplines. In order to discern how the penal prison's main exponents shaped its development at the end of the eighteenth century, Part One brings together material from the histories of law, political philosophy and ideas. By contrast, Part Two concerns the theory of architecture and scrutinises how the formal prison space was constructed both in reality and the imagination: in addressing the link between the detainee's physique and this type of constrained space, it draws from the sociology of the body and the psycho-sociology of space

Full textThis PhD deals with menopause as a category and an experience. It aims to understand the mechanisms through which menopause is “made”, as well as their effects. The social construction of menopause, its social treatment and women’s’ lived experiences in the French context are examined from a double perspective: social discourses about menopause and interviews carried out with menopausal women. Firstly, the social construction of menopause in medical discourses reveals the crucial importance of gender in the production of this category, nowadays extremely dramatized in media and advertisement. We then proceed to analyze menopause as a learning process. In order to “denaturalize” menopause, we focus on the socialization which it is a product of, and the interactions which constitute its learning process. Finally, we examine menopause as a process fashioned by social relationships and representations, a trajectory where norms of age and fecundity, representations of the body, and key interactions with physician and significant other are at play

Full textThis research is driven by the following two interrogations: first, how does Lidia Zinovieva-Annibal, a Silver Age female writer, manage to escape the label of ladies’ literature writer as well as relegation to the muse category? Secondly, what form does this embracement of her own freedom take within the theme of the Subject which can be found in her entire works? I derive a first answer by studying the literary field of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and recent research about the author, women writers and the history of ideas. Zinovieva-Annibal’s position as the wife of the symbolist movement figurehead, Viatcheslav Ivanov, was central, albeit subject to influence. Nevertheless, the symbolists’ ambivalent cult of the eternal feminine paves the way for subversion. The representation of the subject is analyzed through exhaustive reading of her works, unfiltered by Ivanov’s thinking, and examined through philosophical writings on identity. For Zinovieva-Annibal, the freedom claimed by solipsism and nihilism is illusory. From her own experience, intensified by Nietzsche’s thinking, she elaborates a vision of the subject that comes close to what psychoanalysis was uncovering at that same time. The life and death drives trump the body and soul division, which cannot account for the subject and his/her freedom, violence and noble aspirations. It is through a return to the beginning of life, by creating the character of a little girl, that Zinovieva-Annibal posits listening to one’s body, sexuality and desires as the foundation of the affirmation of self, echoing contemporary considerations on female writing. My analysis shows that Zinovieva-Annibal doesn’t essentialize a feminine subject, but that, by deconstructing a number of stereotypes and welcoming this freedom within her writing, she renders to the universal subject the dimensions he had been deprived of
