Abstract:
This review article addresses current controversies and opportunities in research on the roles, uses, and meanings of “Egypt” in ancient Roman visual and material culture. Accordingly, the article investigates problems of definition and interpretation; provides a critical review of current scholarly approaches; and analyzes the field’s intersections with current intellectual developments in the broader fields of archaeology and art history. It is argued that research on Roman Aegyptiaca can gain much from, and is poised to contribute substantially to, (1) 21st-century archaeology’s “material turn”; (2) the construction of new interpretive frameworks for cross-cultural interactions and “hybridization”; and (3) increased attention to the relationships among artifacts, contexts, and assemblages. Roman visual representations of Egypt provide a rich testing ground for research on intercultural exchange, the lived experience of empire, and the complex entanglement of people, things, and images.

Ellis, Steven J. R. The Third Retail Revolution. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198769934.003.0006.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the causes behind the reshaping of Roman retail landscapes during the third and last of the retail revolutions; while the process began in the Flavian era, its full expression was more often realized during the urban building boom of the early second century BCE. A homogenization of form now characterized the Roman taberna, as evidenced through the more simplified structural layouts of what are now rows and rows of one- and two-room shops. We also see it in the regularization of shop-fronts as identified through their standardized, mass-produced threshold stones. This chapter questions how the increasingly standardized shop-fronts can be found in so many cities across the Roman world, yet not everywhere. It also considers the dichotomous nature of the evidence for tabernae from this period, which represents both economic prosperity (in their architectural construction) and decline (in their artifact assemblages).

Abstract:
Consuming Dance examines dance in television and online advertising as both cultural product and cultural meaning-maker. The text interweaves semiotics, choreographic analysis, cultural studies, media studies, and critical theory to place contemporary dance-in-advertising in dialogue with other dance media. Grounding contemporary advertising within media and cultural history, the work both analyzes examples from early television and performs semiotic readings of historical references within later ads. Analysis of individual commercials and campaigns reveals how commercials act as rhizomatic assemblages of cultural history as traditional advertising positioning strategies engage with content, conventions, and discourses from other disciplines and cultural forms. The text explores the power of dance in advertising, examining how it generates affect and spectacle in service of both brand identity and the construction of the commodity-sign. This analysis of dance’s power, in turn, reveals advertising’s intertextuality and its contributions to social identity and the construction of the neoliberal subject. Ultimately, the text highlights advertising’s contradictions, exposing how its appropriation of dance functions as a response simultaneously to marketing needs, shifting ideologies, and growing cultural diversity all while continuing to serve the needs of neoliberal capitalism.
