Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents the most recent developments in shotcrete technology obtained in the last 5 years through the "Industrial Chair on Shotcrete and Concrete Repair" hosted at Laval University. The main goal of this paper is to inform those involved in the construction and repair of civil engineering concrete structures of the various possibilities of "shotcrete." The two first sections present the basic principles in pneumatic application of concrete along with the two processes in shotcrete technology, the dry-mix and wet-mix. The advantages of both processes as well as the general rules to follow in a shotcrete application are also presented and explained. The third and last section, the most important, highlights the latest developments in shotcrete technology. These developments concern the use of set accelerating admixtures in dry process shotcrete and their effects on the durability of materials, the use of liquid and powdered air-entraining admixtures in dry-mix shotcrete as well as the concept of "high initial air content" in wet mix shotcrete.Key words: shotcrete, set accelerator, air-entraining admixture, durability, setting time.

Abstract:
The problem of determining nonlinear neutral inclusions in (electrical or thermal) conductivity is considered. Neutral inclusions, inserted in a matrix containing a uniform applied electric field, do not disturb the field outside the inclusions. The well-known Hashin-coated sphere construction is an example of a neutral inclusion. In this paper, we consider the problem of constructing neutral inclusions from nonlinear materials. In particular, we discuss assemblages of coated ellipsoids. The proposed construction is neutral for a given applied field.

Abstract:
About 90% of the Amazon’s energy potential remains unexploited, with many large hydroelectric dams yet to be built, so it is important to understand how terrestrial vertebrates are affected by reservoir formation and habitat loss. We investigated the influence of the construction of the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric dam on the Madeira River in southwestern Amazonia on the structure of frog assemblages based on samples collected in two years before the dam flooded (pre-stage) and one (post1-stage) and four years (post2-stage) after its construction. We surveyed five 500-ha plot systems three times during each stage; in the pre-stage we sampled 19 plots in low-lying areas that would be flooded by the dam, (from now called flooded pre-stage plots) and 45 plots in terra-firme forest (from now called unflooded pre-stage plots). At the post1-stage we sampled the 45 unflooded plots and in the post2-stage we sampled the remaining 39 unflooded plots. We detected frogs by active visual and acoustic searches standardized by both time and sampling area. Few species recorded in the pre-stage flooded plots were not found in the pre-stage unflooded plots or in stages after flooding. However, the composition of frog assemblages based on relative densities in flooded pre-stage plots did not re-establish in plots on the new river margins. In unflooded areas, frog assemblages were distinct among the flooding stages with no tendency to return to the original assemblage compositions even four years after the dam was filled. For the areas that were not flooded, there was an increase in species richness in 82% of the plots between the surveys before dam construction and the first surveys after dam completion, and 65% between the pre-stage and surveys four years after dam completion. Lack of understanding by the controlling authorities of the long-term effects of landscape changes, such as water-table rises, means that studies covering appropriate periods post construction are not required in legislation, but the data from Santo Antônio indicate that changes due to dam construction are either long-term or difficult to distinguish from natural fluctuations. Future environmental-impact studies should follow strict BACI designs.

Abstract:
The life cycle performance of any infrastructure should be taken into consideration in its design, its construction, its maintenance, its operation, and when needed, its rehabilitation. The protection of infrastructure must be holistic, taking into account long-term socioeconomic and environmental considerations and the impact of the global climate change. Fulfilling the requirements of the ultimate and serviceability limit states over the service life of the facility requires an understanding of the use of the system, the deterioration response of the materials and their components when subjected to aggressive environments, and how this deterioration can be prevented or significantly delayed by preventive, remedial, and routine maintenance. The composition, microstructure, macrostructure, and various modes of deterioration of materials used in construction (steel, wood, concrete) are reviewed, along with possible remedial measures. The development of concrete as a construction material, its durability, and the relevant durability provisions in the various Canadian Standards Association standards are reviewed briefly. Current European practice and the 1990 Comité Euro-International du béton Design Guide for Durable Concrete Structures are evaluated. The engineer's responsibility for durable performance of a facility and the importance of durability audits are also examined.Key words: aggressive environment, construction materials, deterioration, durability, durability audits, life cycle performance, macrostructure, microstructure, socioeconomic and environmental considerations, sustainability.

Abstract:
Flow regulation is one of the most common anthropogenic factors affecting rivers worldwide. In Korea, 16 weirs were constructed along four major rivers from 2009 to 2012. This study aimed to elucidate initial changes in physical, chemical, and biological variables after the construction of consecutive weirs on the Nakdong River, a major large river system. Water quality variables and phytoplankton cell densities were investigated at eight representative sites and compared with the data recorded before the weir construction. There were spatial and temporal changes in the hydraulic retention time (HRT), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll a concentrations among the eight weir sections. HRT increased after the weir construction, while TP and chlorophyll a tended to decrease from the middle to lower section of the Nakdong River. Furthermore, differences were observed in the phytoplankton community composition between 2006–2007 and 2013. There was a marginal decrease in the duration of centric diatom (Stephanodiscus hantzschii) blooms after weir construction. However, Microcystis aeruginosa proliferated more extensively during summer and autumn than it did before the weir construction. Our results suggest that changes in hydrological factors, in response to consecutive weir construction, may contribute to greater physical, chemical, and ecological variability.

Abstract:
Death assemblages found in the Augusta Roadstead harbour (Mediterranean Sea) reflected some modifications in benthic environment that occurred since the 1960s, when the construction of dams closed the commercial harbour. In particular, evidence of a drop in the hydrodynamic levels were found, together with a mud sedimentation increasing. Furthermore, a turbidity phase characterized by a dominant Corbula gibba was identified as due to extensive dredging. Such temporary communities, distributed in accordance to the degree of instability and pollution, preceded the present day, very poor and destructured benthic assemblages.

Abstract:
Interest in the material correlates of economic specialization has led to numerous quantitative studies of standardization (or the lack of it) in craft production, particularly of ceramics. Most of this research has focused on measures of variation and conventional statistical procedures in the treatment of the empirical data, many of which are dependent on unrealistic assumptions (such as normal populations), yielding results that can be questioned. To resolve this crisis more robust statistical methods are investigated including the “jackknife” method (for confidence interval construction) and a multigroup test for homogeneity of variance known as the Brown-Forsythe Test. Computer simulations show that the latter is robust under a variety of distributional forms. These new methods are used to reanalyze ethnoarchaeological ceramic data from the Philippines; it is shown that markedly different conclusions can be reached when compared with the results of more conventional procedures.

Abstract:
A community is an active assemblage of human and non-human elements bound together by interactions. Archaeologies of communities shed light on sets of overlapping and geographically emplaced assemblages of individuals, practices, spaces, buildings, objects, animals and landscapes. This article presents an archaeology of communities based a remarkably well preserved Late Formative (ad 1–500) patio group at Khonkho Wankane, Bolivia. Excavation data provide a high-resolution chronology and document two varieties of assemblages: (1) those that played a greater role in biologically and socially reproducing the community, such as daily food and tool production; and (2) those that played a greater role in its transformation, such as gatherings, work parties and construction projects. In the patio group, intimate meetings took place in small, private spaces where incense was burned. Larger gatherings took place in an outdoor space where painted Kalasasaya small jars and bowls were active elements in interactions between residents and visitors. These events most likely involved work parties that contributed to the physical and social construction of the community. Assemblages at multiple scales built a diverse Late Formative community, which played a principal role in regional interaction networks. Within a few generations of residents leaving their homes in Khonkho, local and regional interactions generated the emergence of a state at Tiwanaku.

Abstract:
As radical geography, inflected by Marx, has transformed into critical geography, influenced by poststructuralism and feminism, dialectical reasoning has come under attack from some poststructural geographers. Their construction of dialectics as inconsistent with poststructural thinking, difference, and assemblages is based, however, on a Hegelian conception of the dialectic. This Hegelian imaginary reflects the intellectual history of radical and/or critical anglophone geography. Yet, dialectics can be read in a non-Hegelian, much less totalizing and ideological, and more geographical way. This broader reading opens up space for considering parallels between dialectics, the assemblages of Deleuze and Guattari, and aspects of complexity theory.

Abstract:
Abstract Spatial and temporal variation of fish assemblages were investigated seasonally from May 2007 to February 2008 across 11 study sites in a subtropical small stream, the Puxi Stream, of the Huangshan Mountain. Along the longitudinal gradient from headwater to downstream, fish species richness and abundance increased gradually, but then decreased significantly at the lower reaches. The highest species richness and abundance were observed in August and the lowest in February. Based on analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), fish assemblages were significantly different in spatial variation but not in temporal variation. Although differences were observed both among sites and among stream orders, the lower R value in order-variation suggested stream order was not the optimal factor explaining the spatial variation of fish assemblages. In addition, dam construction did not significantly alter fish assemblages in the sites adjacent to and immediately downstream to dams. Using cluster analysis and non-metric Multi Dimensional Scaling analysis (NMS), assemblages were separated into three groups at a Bray-Curtis similarity value of 42%: the upper, middle and lower groups. Following analysis of similarity percentages of species contributions (SIMPER), shifts in occurrence or abundance of S. curriculus, Z. platypus, R. bitterling and A. fasciatus contributed most to the differences amongst the three groups. Standard Deviation Redundancy Analysis (RDA) suggested that habitat structure (such as elevation, substrate, and flow velocity) contributed to the spatial and temporal pattern of fish assemblages in the Puxi Stream. In conclusion, the fish assemblages in Puxi Stream presented significant spatial but not temporal variation. Human disturbance has perhaps induced the decrease in species diversity in the lower reaches. However, no significant change was observed for fish assemblages in sites far from and immediately downstream from low-head dams.

Abstract:
In this article, the problem of bolted connections subjected to biaxial bending is considered. Such a problem has not, up to now, been treated theoretically. Indeed, structural steel construction manuals normally propose various checking procedures and generally present design methods for connections subjected to various loadings. However nothing is said about bolted connections subjected to biaxial bending. First, a complete theoretical formulation of the problem is presented. It is based on elastic analysis principles and the assembly is treated classically. The resulting system of three equations is reduced to a system of two equations that can be solved numerically through iterative processes included in an algorithm with calculations done on a microcomputer. Interaction curves for various load combination are supplied. These results are used to validate the derivation and solve typical applications. Key words: bolted connection, biaxial bending, axial force, elastic analysis, computing.

Abstract:
The first offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Italy and the first gravity based structure (GBS) in the world for unloading, storing and re-gasifying liquefied natural gas, was authorized and realized. The Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA, formerly ICRAM) formulated and implemented a multidisciplinary monitoring plan at verifying possible impacts of the project on marine environment. Data from June 2006 to July 2012 on the soft-bottom macrozoobenthic assemblages around the LNG terminal are presented, with the aim of verifying possible disturbances on these assemblages associated with the LNG terminal, by comparing the structure of the benthic communities before and after installation of the terminal, and during its operation. Well-structured assemblages were observed for the entire period investigated, with all taxa normally represented both quantitatively and qualitatively. A temporary disturbance due to the construction of the LNG terminal was detected in the surrounding sediments, while the presence of the concrete structure did not show significant effects at the investigated distances.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Groundwater pumping for agriculture is a major driver causing declines of global freshwater ecosystems, yet the ecological consequences for stream fish assemblages are rarely quantified. We combined retrospective (1950–2010) and prospective (2011–2060) modeling approaches within a multiscale framework to predict change in Great Plains stream fish assemblages associated with groundwater pumping from the United States High Plains Aquifer. We modeled the relationship between the length of stream receiving water from the High Plains Aquifer and the occurrence of fishes characteristic of small and large streams in the western Great Plains at a regional scale and for six subwatersheds nested within the region. Water development at the regional scale was associated with construction of 154 barriers that fragment stream habitats, increased depth to groundwater and loss of 558 km of stream, and transformation of fish assemblage structure from dominance by large-stream to small-stream fishes. Scaling down to subwatersheds revealed consistent transformations in fish assemblage structure among western subwatersheds with increasing depths to groundwater. Although transformations occurred in the absence of barriers, barriers along mainstem rivers isolate depauperate western fish assemblages from relatively intact eastern fish assemblages. Projections to 2060 indicate loss of an additional 286 km of stream across the region, as well as continued replacement of large-stream fishes by small-stream fishes where groundwater pumping has increased depth to groundwater. Our work illustrates the shrinking of streams and homogenization of Great Plains stream fish assemblages related to groundwater pumping, and we predict similar transformations worldwide where local and regional aquifer depletions occur.

Abstract:
In an attempt to apply the concepts developed by Carman and Klinkenberg for the measurement of permeability of a porous media using a gas, a permeameter for the in-situ measurement of intrinsic permeability of skin concrete has been developed. The established technique allows concentration of gas percolation through a well-defined zone in the superficial layer of concrete. The instrument, the measurement method, and the calculation procedure are described in details in this paper. Several series of tests have been performed in laboratory on concrete blocks (300 × 300 × 400 mm) to simulate measurements on the construction site. Three types of concrete, with different porosity, have been tested. The measurement of permeability performed on the concrete blocks have been accomplished both on shaped surfaces, which are representative of skin concrete, and on sawed surfaces, which are representative of mass concrete. Results show that the relationship between the water/cement ratio and the permeability of skin concrete varies distinctively compared with that of mass concrete. The permeameter allows quantification of what has been for a long time qualified as a determining element in terms of the durability of concrete against the corrosion of reinforcement, that is, the distinct permeability of skin concrete from that of mass concrete.Key words: skin concrete, in-situ permeability, intrinsic permeability, apparent permeability, permeameter, Klinkenberg.[Journal translation]
