Rapid prototyping is a relativity new technology and is based on layered manufacturing which has similarities to the method an ordinary desktop paper printer works. This research is to obtain a better understanding on how to use computer graphics software, in this particular case Autodesk Maya, to create a model. The goal is to understand how to create a suitable mesh of a 3D model for use with a 3D printer and produce a printed model that is equivalent to the CAD software 3D model. This specific topic has not been scientifically documented which has resulted in an actual 3D model.

Abstract:
The results of hydrodynamic analyses of two problems involving offshore structures are displayed graphically. This form of presentation of the results and the liberal use of colour have been found to significantly help the ease in which the results are interpreted. For the transformation of waves around an artificial island, a time history of the evolution of the regular, unidirectional wave field around an artificial island is obtained. Through the use of colour, regions in which wave breaking occurs have been clearly defined. The numerical technique used is based on the finite element method using eight noded isoparametric elements. The determination of the transformed wave field takes wave breaking, wave refraction, diffraction, reflection and shoaling into account. The graphical display is achieved by using a plotting program developed for the output of finite element analyses. The motions of a semi-submersible rig are computed from the RAO curves of the rig, used to obtain its' small response in a random sea. The numerical technique used in the analysis assumes that the vertical members are slender and may be analysed using the Morison equation whereas the hulls are treated as large members which are discretised and analysed using diffraction theory. The discretisation of the cylinders and hulls together with the time history of the rig's motions are displayed graphically. Once again, the graphical display is plotted using a program developed for the output of finite element analyses for four noded elements. In this case, a finite element technique has not been employed but the results were ordered to act as though this is the case. The slender members (cylinders) and large members (hulls) are clearly distinguishable by using different colours. The elements used in the analysis are also clearly shown. The VAX 11/730 system was used to obtain the results shown. A video tape, using the results of a time stepping procedure, was made by successively recording the hardcopies produced by the VAX printer. The time stepping could also be seen, in real time, on the IRIS.

Abstract:
Computer image processing can be costly in terms of computing resources. Two image characteristics that can contribute to this cost, resolution and color depth, are essential when considering such tasks as changing an image's resolution or compressing the image for optimal storage. Even with the introduction of a number of algorithms to address the high cost of image processing, image processing continues to incur a penalty in terms of efficiency. Adaptive color palettes represent one approach that addresses the problem of decreased efficiency in image processing by quantizing an image from one color space to another. Additionally, recent advances have yielded a way to take advantage of the processing capabilities of a computer's graphics processing unit (GPO). These GPU advances provide yet another way to address the cost of image processing by making use of general purpose processing on the GPU. By using quantizing algorithms in conjunction with general-purpose GPU algorithms, it is possible to identify algorithmic approaches that would be applicable to GPGPU processing with the purpose of decreasing the cost of processing color image palettes.

Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um sistema computacional para ser utilizado na diagramação (encaixe) de figuras planas em cartões retangulares na indústria de embalagens de papel. O sistema aparece como o primeiro passo para a automação total da fabricação de embalagens. Consta de quatro subsistemas: a edição de figuras; e edição de cores das arestas destas figuras; a confecção e edição de encaixes,onde se leva em conta a relação entre as cores das arestas das figuras de acordo com diferentes tipos de problema; a saída destes encaixes por plotter. É apresentada uma discussão detalhada sobre os cálculos de distância entre figuras e sua utilização no esquema de encaixe. Uma série de exemplos gráficos e apresentada cobrindo as diversas situações possíveis.
This research work consists of the development of a computer system to be used in the nesting of plane figures on rectangular cardboards in the paper industry. This system is a first step towards the total automation of the manufacture of paper packs. The system consists of four parts: a figure editor; a subsystem for editing the colors of the edges; the nesting subsystem, in which the colors of the edges are taken into account; and a subsystem for outputing the drawings. A detailed discussion on the calculation of the distance between the figures and its influence on the nesting system is presented. Finally, graphical examples which cover the various possible situations are presented.

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a CAD-based integrated model developed to aid the planning of the construction of in-situ concrete structures. The main aim of this model is to automate the planning process of in-situ concrete structures using data generated by CAD systems. In order to achieve this goal, the integration of a CAD system (AutoCAD 10) and a computerised planning system (Artemis 2000) via a database program (dBase IV) has been achieved on an IBM PS2 Model 70 microcomputer. This enables the generation of network plans in the AutoCAD system which are then automatically transferred to the Artemis system for time and cost analyses. Currently, the system can handle concreting, steel fixing and formwork activities associated with in-situ concrete design elements. However, further enhancement of the model is possible in order to automate the generation of most construction activities. In order to develop this CAD-based integrated planning model, it was necessary to undertake a questionnaire survey on the current status of planning techniques and information technology uses amongst the main UK and US contractors. This survey reveals that many of these contractors are now aware of the benefits that a CAD system can offer to the management and planning of in-situ concrete structures. It was also found that many aspects of information technology such as computer aided design and project management are well within the reach of most of the companies surveyed, and that many recent developments could be used to develop integrated systems as an aid to the planning of construction projects. These findings indicate that the application of such systems could soon become a reality. However, the practicality of these techniques has to be assessed on real life projects which could be the subject of a further research. The CAD-based integrated model described in this thesis offers many facilities for: modeling, drafting, materials and quantities scheduling, time and cost analyses and reporting which were all integrated and incorporated within such a single system. These facilities which have been fully customised within the developed package are easy to be run as the software is user friendly with pull-down and pop-up menus, and help facilities provided at almost all levels. This thesis demonstrates that current software and hardware technologies are more than sufficient to establish new approaches to the planning and management of in-situ concrete structures, particularly in the area of computer aided design. Such approaches can rectify many of the deficiencies found in traditional planning systems. For instance, a CAD-based system could eliminate the re-extraction of information from conventional drawings and documents which could be error prone as an access to the original electronic building model is provided within such a system. In addition, accurate quantities associated with sets of design elements and relevant to the planning process are automatically generated within the system.

Abstract:
The construction industry has a reputation for low productivity, waste, low use of new technologies, and poor quality (Egan, 1998; Wakefield & Damrienant, 1999). It is estimated that up to 30% of construction is rework, and recognised that site teams spend too much time and effort making designs work in practice (Egan, 1998). The aim of the research project was to develop a visualisation and communication environment that would assist design teams in communicating design details that may be problematic for construction teams. The investigation was based on the need for a tool that facilitates detail design information communication. The VISCON (computer visualisation support for buildability) environment provides support for general information sharing in the context of a collaborative building project. This prototype is Web based and can be accessed from any location. This will allow for construction information to be readily communicated and shared between head offices and construction sites and any other locations to provide better visualisation of design details. Three scenarios were developed as case studies for demonstration purposes based on real projects. These case studies used a paper factory, a bay barrage building and a swimming pool recently constructed at Loughborough University. In the development of the case studies, 3D models were produced using components from the selected prototype buildings that may inherently be difficult to assemble. The VISCON prototype demonstrates the various functionalities of the system in creating intricate design details that can be animated or interacted with in real time. The main achievements of the research are: The review of buildability problems and their causes during the construction stage of a facility; The development of an architecture for a computer visualisation tool for buildability (VISCON); Implementation and validation of the proposed system (VISCON) through the use of a number of case studies. The system was found to be useful and demonstrated that computer visualisation tools provide considerable potential in improving clarity of information and also a new way of visualising and solving design problems that arise during the construction stage of a project. It also demonstrated the ease of use of the proposed system, and its efficiency and application to the construction industry. The research concludes that the use of computer visualisation can improve the construction project delivery process by providing guidance on how components are assembled together and how buildability problems can be solved during the construction stage. Furthermore, the use of effective communication tools will improve collaboration between construction and design practitioners.

Simulation modeling and visualization can substantially help in designing complex construction operations and in making optimal decisions where traditional methods prove ineffective or are unfeasible. However, there has been limited use of simulation in planning construction operations due to the unavailability of appropriate visual communication tools that can provide users with a more realistic and comprehensible feedback from simulation analyses. Visualizing simulated construction operations in 3D can significantly help in establishing the credibility of simulation models. In addition, 3D visualization can provide valuable insight into the subtleties of construction operations that are otherwise non-quantifiable and presentable. New software development technologies emerge at incredible rates that allow engineers and scientists to create novel, domain-specific applications. This study capitalized on a computer graphics technology based on the concept of the "Scene Graph" to design and implement a general-purpose 3D Visualization System that is Simulation and CAD-software independent. This system, the "Dynamic Construction Visualizer", enables realistic visualization of modeled construction operations and the resulting products in 3D and can be used in conjunction with a wide variety of simulation tools. This thesis describes the "Dynamic Construction Visualizer" as well as the "Scene Graph" architecture and the Frame Updating algorithms used in its design.

The human face is a fascinating, but extremely complex object; the research project described is concerned with the computer generation and animation of faces. However, the age old captivation with the face transforms into a major obstacle when creating synthetic faces. The face and head are the most visible attributes of a person. We master the skills of recognising faces and interpreting facial movement at a very early age. As a result, we are likely to notice the smallest deviation from our concept of how a face should appear and behave. Computer animation in general, is often perceived to be ``wooden' and very ``rigid'; the aim is therefore to provide facilities for the generation of believable faces and convincing facial movement. The major issues addressed within the project concern the modelling of a large variety of faces and their animation. Computer modelling of arbitrary faces is an area that has received relatively little attention in comparison with the animation of faces. Another problem that has been considered is that of providing the user with adequate and effective control over the modelling and animation of the face. The Facial Animation, Construction and Editing System or FACES was conceived as a system for investigating these issues. A promising approach is to look a little deeper than the surface of the skin. A three-layer anatomical model of the head, which incorporates bone, muscle, skin and surface features, has been developed. As well as serving as a foundation which integrates all the facilities available within FACES, the advantage of the model is that it allows differing strategies to be used for modelling and animation. FACES is an interactive system, which helps with both the generation and animation of faces, while hiding the structural complexities of the face from the user. The software consists of four sub-systems; CONSTRUCT and MODIFY cater for modelling functionality, while ANIMATE allows animation sequences to be generated and RENDER provides for shading and motion evaluation.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to improve the efficiency of the construction process through the application of electronic data interchange (EDI). This thesis describes the development and application of EDI messages. The messages described are targeted to provide a means for transferring construction specific information during the construction process. The definition of electronic data interchange and its technical issues are first described. The nature of EDI, replacing paper based communication with electronic messages, impacts on the way in which business is conducted, and also has far reaching legal implications due to the reliance of many legal systems on paper documents and signatures. The business and legal implications are therefore discussed in detail. The application of EDI in the construction industry is investigated by means of a literature review. This work is furthered by a longitudinal study of the construction industry's application of EDI, which consisted of two surveys at a five year interval. A model of the information flows within the traditional construction process is developed to assist in the identification of information flows suitable for EDI. A methodology for message development was produced. The methodology was then applied to develop a description data model that could be utilised in the existing bill of quantity and trading cycle messages. The bill of quantity message set was at a stage ready for trial. To determine the issues related to implementation specifically in the construction industry a trial implementation of this message set was undertaken. The official implementation undertaken by EDICON is described. Software was also developed to undertake the trial. This software was tested and proved the message set developed was suitable for the transfer of bill of quantity related information during a construction project. The factors causing the failure of the implementation of the bill of quantities message set are discussed. A number of these factors are considered valid for all construction project information flows. Finally, the use of shared project models to re-engineer construction information tasks is recommended as a means of achieving significant benefit from electronic data exchange in the construction process.

Construction is one of the most information-dependent industries compared to other sectors. Computers have been used to improve the efficiency of management in most businesses including the construction industry. Treating information efficiently is the key to maintaining an edge over competitors and for success in business. However, in order to succeed, companies must choose a management system that is most suited to their operations. The difficulty about computerization in civil engineering is that the construction industry does not have trained IT experts with Civil engineering or Management background. Although there are many computer applications for project management, almost all the applications required some form of manual modification for updating information. In a construction project, time and accurate information is vitally important in order to accomplish scheduled completion. A small change in plan costs money and time in both the traditional methods as well as current IT applications. The main reason is that there is no direct link between the head office and the regional site office and there is no “quick” link between site office and site engineers who are out in the field for most of the time. This study proposes the design of an information transfer system to improve construction site management. A Web-based Construction Site Management system called “WCSM” will be developed. WCSM incorporates some major features including: Integration of Web technology and mobile computing into construction site management and automatic project schedule updates. The performance of WCSM is evaluated through virtual simulations, and comparisons with other relevant applications are reported. These evaluations showed that WCSM required significantly less time, for initial project set up and modifications during project implementation, when compared to MS Project and Micro Planner.

Construction Planning will increasingly play a more critical role within the realm of the Built Environment. Existing practices used to plan and communicate the construction process to be undertaken are failing to deliver the desired results for construction companies and clients alike. At a time of unprecedented growth in the industry around the world, which is leading to a general skills shortage, especially in management positions, construction planners are increasingly being asked to deal with more responsibility. As with other industries, technological improvement in the tools at their disposal is one way to address the inadequacies of the present situation. Increasingly, three dimensional design packages are being used to generate construction information which can then be used for quantities calculations, automated manufacturing processes and construction simulation. The latter forms the basis for their use in the process of planning, through new technologies being developed as virtual construction tools or 4D planning, the addition of time to the 3D model environment, but using the elements within the model as the basis for the construction programme. The benefit of using the design information to form the basis of the programme is that the interface tasks and logistical activities, as well as location related constraints, can be identified and then communicated to all levels within the construction team through a time based visual image. The purpose of this study is therefore to establish a scientifically analysed alternative method for the creation, review and delivery of construction programmes. In order to achieve the research objectives, three methodologies have been employed. Firstly, the literature review in the fields of planning including existing methodologies and previous research of 4D related techniques has been analysed. An overview of the perceived weaknesses to current practises and proposed solution will be explored and best case scenarios outlined and further investigated. Secondly, the 51 Lime Street project provides an environment in which the proposed 4D planning techniques have been implemented and the benefits of the process can, through observation / participation methodology, be validated. Thirdly, through interview questionnaires, with Lime St contractors and management, and e-mail questionnaires to a broader sample stratum, data on the ability of the tools, the techniques employed on 51 Lime Street and similar projects have been collated and statistically analysed to validate the reliability and relevance for future implementation. The result of the research will provide management teams with a practical alternative to existing planning methodologies. Construction planners will have alternative technique that can further enhance their role within the project team whilst increasing their ability to communicate the team’s vision to a wider audience, making them and the project more efficient and effective in the process. It has been proposed that clients insist on the use of 3D from the commencement of the design process so that this information can be passed downstream through the construction process and onto facilities management. Planners need to be able to communicate their requirements better and the 4D planning models provide both a more inclusive way of planning alongside a better communications medium in the form of moving images. A picture tells a thousand words.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the design, development, and evaluation of an interactive Microsoft HoloLens application that projects landscape models in Augmented Reality. The application was developed using the Unity framework and 3D models created in Sketchup. Using the application, students can not only visualize the models in real space but can also interact with the models using gestures. The students can interact with the models using gaze and air-tap gestures. Application testing was conducted with 21 students from the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning department at Utah State University. To evaluate the application, students completed a usability survey after using the application. Students also participated in a focus group. Results indicate that students were excited to use the application and found it helpful for learning landscape construction concepts. Some of the students found the application and the HoloLens device cumbersome to use, and they offered suggestions for how to improve the application. The thesis concludes with recommendations for future work.

The processes of estimating, planning and control within the building industry are seldom fully integrated. This study considers the integration of the processes based on production data collected from several projects. The aim of the research is to investigate the feasibility of the integrated approach as a means of improving the estimating, planning and control processes within the construction industry. A structured systems analysis of the collaborating body identifies existing processes and production orientated information requirements. A model and working system prototype are developed which illustrate integration of the processes and generation of management information. Application of the model as a basis for estimating and planning at various levels of detail is demonstrated. Forecast-observation diagrams provide the necessary control mechanism for monitoring production outputs. Forecasts on a second independent sample of projects are assessed based on tolerances of performances from first sample projects. Accuracy of average forecasts from the model are compared with other data sources, these being estimators' data used in the preparation of the estimate, and bonus surveyors' targets used during the production process. The research concludes that the production data and model give a worthwhile improvement over existing methods in forecasting average productivity performances when methods of placing can be clearly identified and related to work packages. The production data and model are insufficiently accurate to give a worthwhile improvement when measured items cover work packages of varying degrees of complexity, and when proportioning methods are used to obtain production data for different categories of items which collectively represent work packages. Assessment of the model together with refinements are also discussed.

The rapid growth of the mobile consumer market has influenced companies to make their workplace digital and mobile, with the goal to remove ties to a physical workplace, increase productivity, and trivialize tedious tasks. The construction industry is in need of modernization; it is a competitive market and to get a contract it is vital to provide a reasonable price quote fast.This bachelor thesis was performed together with Byggwalle AB in Västerås with the objective to create a mobile solution for price quotes, based on an earlier experimental prototype. This thesis will look at how the manual price quote creation process can be sped up and made more transparent to build up trust between the companies and the customers. It will also look at the choices made when developing a mobile application for the construction industry, how to make it flexible enough to fit different kinds of businesses, and look at how the data is administrated using a web based administration system. The result of this thesis is a promotional prototype, which sped up the delivery of price quotes from 3 weeks to 3 hours, and will be distributed to selected companies for further testing in the near future. We hope that this product can change the way business is done in construction industry.

Research in team science suggests strategies for addressing difficulties that groups face when working together. This dissertation examines how student teams work in project based learning (PBL) environments, with the goal of creating strategies and technology to improve collaboration. The challenge of working in such a group is that the members frequently come from different backgrounds and thus have different ideas on how to accomplish a project. In these groups, teamwork and production of successful solutions depends on whether members consider each other’s dissimilar perspectives. However, the lack of a shared history means that members may have difficulty in taking the time to share and build knowledge collectively. The ultimate goal of my research is to design strategies and technology to improve the inner workings of PBL groups so that they will learn from each other and produce successful outcomes in collaborative settings. The field of computer supported collaborative learning has made much progress on designing, implementing, and evaluating environments that support project based learning. However, most existing research concerns students rather than instructors. Therefore, in my initial research, I explore the needs of the instructors in conducting student assessments (studies one, two). These studies identify five different group processes that are of importance from the instructors’ perspective. My subsequent research focuses on one of them, namely the process of knowledge co-construction, which is a process that instructors have significant difficulty in assessing. In order to support the assessment of the knowledge co-construction process, my research has progressed along two axes: (a) identifying conditions that support the knowledge co-construction process and its relationship to learning and knowledge transfer (studies three, four, and five), and (b) automatically monitoring the knowledge co-construction process using natural language processing and machine learning (studies six ~ nine). Studies five and eight look at a specific type of knowledge co-construction process called the idea co-construction process (ICC). ICC is the process of taking up, transforming, or otherwise building on an idea expressed earlier in a conversation. I argue that ICC is essential for groups to function well in terms of knowledge sharing and perspective taking.

The construction industry has a great opportunity to streamline its operations even more by making greater use of the digital revolution. The industry today uses a lot of manual data management and analysis to get an overview of the business and to make decisions. This can be a time-consuming process that could be made more efficient through Business Intelligence (BI). BI is a technology that automatically, with the help of selected Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), shows the current status of how a business performs. This can allow managers and executives to make decisions easier and faster.This study examines which KPIs that are of common interest to companies and organizations in the construction industry as well as how these KPIs can be presented to the end users of a BI application. To investigate this, data is collected through literature studies and interviews, which results in a list of common KPIs for the industry. From this common list, a number of KPIs are selected to be visually represented.An analysis of the results, indicates that KPIs are of different importance and relevance depending on which sector of the construction industry the interviewee belongs to. There also appears to be sector-specific KPIs and the common list suggests that the profit margin is of great importance throughout the whole industry. KPIs can be represented in different types of charts and diagrams, depending on the purpose they hold, and should be designed so that they are intuitive and easy to understand.
Bygg- och hantverksbranschen har stor möjlighet att effektivisera sin verksamhet ännu mer genom att i större utsträckning utnyttja den digitaliserade utvecklingen. Branschen använder idag mycket manuell datahantering och manuell dataanalys för att få en överblick över verksamheten och ta beslut. Detta kan vara en tidskrävande process, som skulle kunna effektiviseras ytterligare genom Business Intelligence (BI). BI är en teknologi som automatiskt, med hjälp av valda nyckeltal (KPI:er), visar aktuell status på hur en verksamhet presterar. Detta kan göra att beslutsfattare kan fatta beslut enklare och snabbare.Denna studie undersöker vilka nyckeltal som är av gemensamt intresse för företag och organisationer i byggoch hantverksbranschen samt hur dessa nyckeltal kan presenteras för slutanvändarna av en BI-applikation. För att ta reda på detta samlas data in genom litteraturstudier och intervjuer, vilket resulterar i en lista över gemensamma KPI:er i branchen. Ur denna lista handplockas ett antal nyckeltal ut för att representeras visuellt.En analys av resultaten indikerar att nyckeltal är av olika vikt och relevans, beroende på vilken sektortillhörighet av byggoch hantverksbranschen den intervjuade tillhör. Det verkar även finnas sektorspecifika KPI:er samt att listan med de branchgemensamma nyckeltalen antyder att vinstmarginal är av stor vikt. KPI:er kan representeras i olika typer av diagram beroende på vilket syfte de innehar och bör designas så att de är intuitiva och lättförståeliga.

This thesis presents a solution for integrating document handling technologies within the construction industry using metadata in a novel way and providing a working solution in the form of an application called Columbus. The research analyses in detail the problem of project collaboration. It concentrates on the usage of document management, project hosting and document control systems as important enabling technologies. The creation, exchange and recording of information are addressed as key factors for having a unified document handling solution. Metadata is exploited as a technology providing for effective open information exchange within and between project participants. The technical issues relating to the use of metadata are addressed at length. The Columbus application is presented as a working solution to this problem. Columbus is currently used by over 20000 organisations in 165 countries and has become a standard for information exchange. The main benefit of Columbus has been in getting other project participants to send metadata with their electronic documents and in dealing with project archival. This has worked very well on numerous projects, saving countless man-hours of data input time, document cataloguing and searching. The application is presented in detail from both commercial and technical perspectives and is shown as an open solution, which can be extended by third parties. The commercial success of Columbus is discussed by means of a number of reviews and case studies that cover its usage within the industry. In 2000, it was granted an Institution of Civil Engineers' Special Award in recognition of its contribution to the Latham and Egan initiatives for facilitating information exchange within the construction industry.

This research makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the area of agile project management and augmented reality visualisation technology. It enables an understanding on how the use of the proposed, designed, and developed ARGILE framework (integration of Agile and Augmented Reality) enhances the collaboration, communication, decision-making, and visual understanding within construction projects. ARGILE changes the current process buildings are designed and built, and consequently contributes to the improvement of the construction project outcomes. This research study seeks the best way to accomplish the research aim, and develops a conceptual framework, which implements a mixed convergent parallel approach in order to discover a rich coherence of the current situation in the design and construction industry; bridges the gap among decision-making, collaboration, communication; and finally facilitates the visual understanding. Consequently, to endorse the validation of the conceptual framework, the triangulation of mixed research methods including qualitative and quantitative to collect the data will be used, followed by a rich analysis and description of the data collected, leading to the design of the ARGILE framework, and ending with two focus groups’ workshops to effectively validate the proposed design and developed ARGILE framework. The main findings of this research are: the successful combination of agile and augmented reality achieved through the development of the ARGILE framework, which contributes to improving and augmenting the decision-making, collaboration, communications, and the visual understanding throughout the design and construction stages. Moreover, the most important outcome of this work is that it enabled the practices to obtain an overview of their current state of decision-making, collaboration, and the visual understanding, assisting in fundamentally changing the current way buildings are designed and constructed. As the design and construction are completely different tasks, but normally treated as one, using ARGILE will help breaking the link by allowing the design stage to spend enough time and conduct productive tests it needs before starting the construction stage on site. ARGILE contains all necessary mechanisms built-in to enable sufficient design, collaboration, decision-making, and client integration.

The inadequate infrastructure that exists for seamless project team communications has its roots in the problems arising from fragmentation, and the lack of effective co-ordination between stages of the construction process. The use of disparate computer-aided engineering (CAE) systems by most disciplines is one of the enduring legacies of this problem and makes information exchange between construction team members difficult and, in some cases, impossible. The importance of integrating modelling techniques with a view to creating an integrated product and process model that is applicable to all stages of a construction project's life cycle, is being recognised by the Construction Industry. However, improved methods are still needed to assist the developer in the definition of information model structures, and current modelling methods and standards are only able to provide limited assistance at various stages of the information modelling process. This research investigates the role of system integration by reviewing product and process information models, current modelling practices and modelling standards in the construction industry, and draws conclusions with similar practices from other industries, both in terms of product and process representation, and model content. It further reviews various application development tools and information system requirements to support a suitable integrated information structure, for developing an integrated product and process model for design and construction, based on concurrent engineering principles. The functional and information perspectives of the integrated model, which were represented using IDEFO and the unified modelling language (UML), provided the basis for developing a prototype hyper-integrated product and process information modelling system (HIPPY). Details of the integrated conceptual model's implementation, practical application of the prototype system, using house-building as an example, and evaluation by industry practitioners are also presented. It is concluded that the effective integration of product and process information models is a key component of the implementation of concurrent engineering in construction, and is a vital step towards providing richer information representation, better efficiency, and the flexibility to support life cycle information management during the construction stage of small to medium sized-building projects.

This research seeks to understand the process of technological development in the UK and the specific role of a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’ in that process. The concept of a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’ will be developed throughout the thesis through a study into the computer industry in the UK in the post-war period. Specifically, the thesis discusses the threat of America, or how actors in the network of innovation within the British computer industry perceived it as a threat and the effect that this perception had on actors operating in the networks of construction in the British computer industry. However, the reaction to this threat was not a simple one. Rather this story is marked by sectional interests and technopolitical machination attempting to capture this rhetoric of ‘threat’ and ‘falling behind’. In this thesis the concept of ‘threat’ and ‘falling behind’, or more simply the ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’, will be explored in detail and the effect this had on the development of the British computer industry. What form did the process of capture and modification by sectional interests within government and industry take and what impact did this have on the British computer industry? In answering these questions, the thesis will first develop a concept of a British culture of computing which acts as the surface of emergence for various ideologies of innovation within the social networks that made up the computer industry in the UK. In developing this understanding of a culture of computing, the fundamental distinction between the US and UK culture of computing will be explored. This in turn allows us to develop a concept of how Americanisation emerged as rhetorical construct. With the influence of a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’, the culture of computing in the UK began to change and the process through which government and industry interacted in the development of computing technologies also began to change. In this second half of the thesis a more nuanced and complete view of the nature of innovation in computing in the UK in the sixties will be developed. This will be achieved through an understanding of the networks of interaction between government and industry and how these networks were reconfigured through a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’. As a result of this, the thesis will arrive at a more complete view of change and development within the British computer industry and how interaction with government influences that change.

The purpose of this research was to identify the expertise of CAD graphics operators/managers in the design and marketing phases of textile/apparel product development. Additionally, the purposes were to determine the effect of CAD graphics on product development in the textile/apparel industry, and to identify future needs and uses of CAD graphics in the industry. A questionnaire was sent to 117 CAD graphics operators/managers. The results from the questionnaire were obtained through frequency and percentage distributions. The major findings of this study concluded that textile design and/or colorations and coloration of sketches were the major uses for CAD graphics systems. The shortening of response time of development of idea in design cycle was the major benefit of using a CAD graphics system. Future needs and wants were found to be mainly in the areas of better color control, matching and selection, better resolution in printing, and faster, larger printout capabilities.

This thesis is a proof-of-concept project that aims at modify and reuse existing communication protocols of wireless vehicle to vehicle communication in order to build a prototype of a real time graphical application that runs in an embedded environment. The application is a 2D visualization of the flow of material at a quarry and is built on top of existing communication protocols that enable wireless vehicle to vehicle communication according to the 802.11p standard for intelligent transport solutions. These communication protocols have already been used within the Volvo group in other research rojects, but not in a context of a real-time graphical 2D visualization. The application runs on an ALIX embedded motherboard and combined with the necessary hardware represent one node that makes the communication network. The visualization monitors the position of every active node in the network and the flow of material between material locations and crusher that process the material at the quarry. The visualization is implemented in C/C++ using Qt 4.6.2 Graphics View framework.

However, despite the potential benefits that e-commerce can offer, the adoption of B2C e-commerce in South African construction SMMEs is low and this is due to the challenges associated with e-commerce (Vaithanathan, 2010; Uzoka, Shemi & Seleka, 2007; Love & Irani, 2004; Anumba & Ruikar, 2002). These e-commerce challenges include: high implementation costs, lack or poor infrastructure, inadequate resources, low use of e-commerce by suppliers and consumers, lack of access to e-commerce, computer illiteracy, deficiency in understanding the potential benefits of e-commerce and security concerns (Vaithanathan, 2010; Uzoka, Shemi, & Seleka, 2007; Mensah, Bahta, & Mhlanga, 2005; Cloete, Courtney, & Fintz, 2002). Les travaux en modélisation déclarative sont assez nombreux. Il est désormais nécessaire de mettre en place des méthodes générales basées sur celles déjà étudiées et de proposer des outils pour le développement de modeleurs déclaratifs. Nous proposons un nouveau formalisme basé sur les ensembles flous. Ce formalisme apparaît d'une part comme une synthèse et une unification des travaux existants et d'autre part apporte des éléments nouveaux comme la logique floue, la gestion linguistique de la négation. Nous étudions particulièrement le type de propriété le plus simple : la propriété élémentaire. A partir d'une propriété de base, d'un opérateur flou et d'un modificateur, nous mettons en place une méthode pour déterminer la sémantique d'une propriété élémentaire. Nous proposons aussi un traitement original de sa négation. Plutôt que d'utiliser la négation logique habituelle, nous nous intéressons à une gestion se basant sur des notions linguistiques. Enfin, nous présentons des solutions de traitement pour les autres propriétés. Cependant, ces solutions ne sont pas encore vraiment satisfaisantes. La plupart des projets en modélisation déclarative mettent en oeuvre des techniques similaires. A partir de ces travaux et du formalisme flou, nous développons le projet CordiFormes, une plate-forme de programmation visant à faciliter la mise en oeuvre de futurs modeleurs déclaratifs. Ses caractéristiques sont la simplicité, la souplesse de programmation, l'efficacité, l'extensibilité, la réutilisabilité et le prototypage rapide du modeleur. CordiFormes propose des outils sur trois niveaux : le noyau comportant toutes les structures et algorithmes de base, la couche interface proposant dialogues et composants d'interface et, enfin, la couche application pour produire rapidement un premier modeleur. Trois applications permettent de valider le formalisme et les outils de la plate-forme.
