Full textThe subject of this thesis is the study of minimal and constant mean curvature submanifolds and of the influence of the geometry of the ambient manifold on the solutions of this problem. In the first chapter, following the ideas of F. Almgren, we propose a generalization of the notion of hypersurface with constant mean curvature to all codimensions. In codimension n-k we define constant mean curvature submanifolds as the critical points of the functional of the k - dimensional volume of the boundaries of k+1 - dimensional minimal submanifolds. We prove the existence in compact n-dimensional manifolds of n-k codimensional submanifolds with constant mean curvature for all k

This thesis details the design and construction of a rig for studying surface condensation and a rig for creating anodized metal oxides (AMOs). The condensation rig characterizes condensation for different surfaces; this is done with the use of known heat transfer principles to calculate characteristic heat fluxes and heat transfer coefficient values. Preliminary results have been shown to follow predictions derived from existing heat transfer principles, and have confirmed existing literature's assertion of increased effectiveness of dropwise condensation over filmwise condensation. The AMO rig fabricates anodized metal oxide surface samples by subjecting wafers coated with thin metal layers to voltage in the presence of acidic electrolytes. Initial fabricated anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) samples have shown to display the characteristic hierarchal nanopore structure of known fabricated AAO in literature. Both the condensation rig and the AMO rig will be used in current and future condensation and superhydrophobic surface research by the Varanasi group in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Full textThe goal of the work is the design of topological based geometrical tools, which allow the construction of 3D geological models. The construction of such models needs the use of tools which allow to compute the intersections between geological surfaces and to assemble them in order to obtain a model composed of several volumes. However, most of the existing intersection algorithms only deal with isolated volumes. In order to solve this problem, we first propose co-refinement algorithms in dimensions 2 and 3. These algorithms allow to build the space subdivision corresponding to the composition of several subdivisions. Thus, they offer the possibility to compute intersections between objects whose topological dimension is equal to the dimension of their geometrical embeddings. We also explain how such algorithms can be used for obtaining the results currently provided in CAD by boolean operations. We then present the geological modeling domain as well as the current related issues and we propose solutions to solve them. We explain how the co-refinement algorithms can be used for assembling surfaces corresponding to 3D geological objects, and for thus obtaining a 3D consistent structural model in correspondence to the geologist’s interpretation

Our input data, obtained by physical measures, are typically inhomogeneous, sparse, noisy and voluminous. Therefore, we are interested in treatments permitting to improve the surface quality, also to detect and then rebuild missing elements : surfaces representing the break of horizons and the relative moving of the two separated broken parts (called the faults)

Full textThe objective of this work is to study the interaction between cement and different types of formwork surfaces by analysing the surface condition of the raw cement paste 24 hours old and that of formwork surfaces at different scales as well as their demoulding performance. Surface characterisation procedures combining interferometry, SEM + EDS, Raman spectroscopy and AFM Peak Force are developed. These multiscale characterisations allow the demonstration of the impact of the physico-chemical properties of formwork surfaces on cementitious surfaces at different scales and the analysis of their influence on adhesion to formwork. The effect of surface geometry and surface energy of formwork surfaces on the morphological, chemical and mechanical characteristics of cement surfaces is analysed, from millimetre to nanometre, with a discussion on the possible characterisation of cement phases more or less hydrated

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to get a solution of the construction and the GC1,2 geometric joint problem of the regular developable surfaces limited by two parallel plans and aided by Bézier patches. The first chapter introduces the definition problem of a plates series supported by two parametric curves as a data. The second chapter presents the bibliographical study about the developable surfaces. This study emphasizes firstly on the theoretical aspect and then, on the evaluation to the existing methods for solving this problem. The third chapter talks about the sufficient condition of the regularity and the classification of the developable surface. The objective of this research is to get a general expression of the developable surface which it can be applied in CAD-CAM and, particularly, for the treatment in this problem. The fourth chapter proposes the construction method of the regular developable Bézier patches defined by two boundary curves lied respectively on two different parallel plans. The discussion is focused essentially on the choice of the real scalar function for controlling the velocity vector of these boundary curves. That method is very applicable for the treatment of the approximation problem of the regular ruled surface limited by two parallel plans. The fifth chapter presents some equations of the GCU geometric continuity condition between two regular developable Bézier patches. The sixth chapter assures some advantages of this method by comparing with the existing methods in the naval designing

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is the development of design tool to improve energy and environmental buildings efficiency and to improve civil engineering structure durability. During this thesis, we have developed a coupled heat and moisture transfer model in building porous materials. Its mathematical development admits an analytical solution in particular cases. It is possible then to consider numerical resolution validation. The developed mathematical model was implemented in "COMSOL Multiphysics". Numerical and analytical resolution was compared, it shows a good agreement. The main input parameters of the developed model include: water vapour sorption-desorption isotherm, moisture diffusion coefficient and thermogradient coefficient. In this work, we have developed laboratory devices and mathematical procedures to assess these parameters. We have made more specific studies on the variability of water vapour adsorption isotherm on samples taken in-situ. Later, we realized simulations to demonstrate the importance of taking into account the different input parameters variability that we have quantified. We have also undertaken simulations to validate the developed approach. It consists in comparison between our results and results of laboratory tests and those produced by the simulation code "CHAMPS". The comparison helped strengthen the prediction of the developed approach. Finally, we have studied the effect of temperature gradient on the assessment of the "MBV" (Moisture Buffer Value) coefficient. This coefficient is of particular interest because it allows comparing the potentialities of buffering capacities of materials

Full textSolar fuels generated from the light-induced splitting of water into H2 and O2 is an appealing strategy for securing future energy. The use of platinum for catalyzing hydrogen evolution may be bypassed with earth-abundant catalysts. In a previous study, our lab realized the immobilization of a proton reduction catalyst, the cobalt diimine-dioxime molecular complex, within a cathode material steadily evolving H2 from fully aqueous media. In this work, we report on the implementation of this catalyst into light-driven devices. Operating conditions in the solvent of interest, water, were screened. The molecular catalyst degrades when free in solution, but retains activity when supported on an electrode, even in the presence of O2, and could thus be integrated into a tandem cell. Further on, new derivatives of the catalyst were developed for the attachment onto transparent conducting oxides. Co-grafted photocathodes were constructed by anchoring a functionalized catalyst along with photosensitizers onto p-type NiO. These architectures were checked by a whole set of analytical techniques and light-driven catalytic hydrogen evolution was achieved by photocathodes assessed under device-related photoelectrochemical conditions. Immobilizable dye-catalyst dyads were also successfully synthetized as alternative derivatives and open up new possibilities to develop molecular photocathodes

Full textIn this thesis we propose some methods for generating pairing-friendly elliptic curves and abelian varieties based on the Brezing-Weng method. We fixe embedding degree and CM discriminant and generate complete famillies parametrized by polynomials. The thesis consists in two parts. In the first part (chapter 1, chapter 2) , we propose a method of choosing primitive elements for the Brezing-Weng method, and give some examples breaking the records of rho-value of some existing families when the imbedding degrees are 16, 22, 28 and 46. In the second part (chapter 3, chapter 4), we generalize the Brezing-Weng method to the case of abelian surfaces and also the method of choosing primitive elements to generate complete families of abelian surfaces suitable for pairing-based cryptography

Full textConceptual and preliminary aircraft design codes have different geometry requirements. Conceptual design codes use component based models, while preliminary design codes require a more complete and integrated geometry. An automatic procedure to convert between the two types of models would prevent geometry inconsistencies and speed up the design process. This thesis describes some of the concepts and algorithms necessary to develop such a procedure. Specifically, the theory and development of C2 continuous fillets between aircraft components is discussed. B-spline surface generation from conceptual geometry data and the relimiting of e surfaces is also presented. Master of Science

Full textThe main topic of this manuscript is surface statistic analysis. We define a new formalism that extends to a random framework the surface representation introduced by Glaunès and Vaillant (2005). This formalism is based on a notion of random linear form, which is inspired from the theory of generalized random process, developped by Itô (1954) and Gelfand and Vilenkin (1964). On this representation, we set a probabilistic model that describes the variability of surfaces ; by a transition from continuous to discrete, we extend it to an observation model that describes experimental data. We build estimators for the mean representant of a surface sample and for the autocovariance of the noise. We demonstrate that these estimators are consistent. We report some experiments in which we test our estimation method on simulated data. We apply our statistical framework to classification of brain surfaces from MRI, using a Bayesian classification procedure

Full textCold plasma polymer surface modification is widely used in the biomedical field to tailor the surface properties of materials to improve their biocompatibility. Cold plasma is a gaseous environment near ambient temperature containing excited species that can react with the surface of materials. This technology is well known and efficient but usually requires low pressure plasma systems which render the process costly and less interesting for industrial scale-up. But recently, filamentary dielectric barrier discharge (FDBD) and atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) working at atmospheric pressure have appeared as interesting alternatives for polymer surface modification. This idea aims to eliminate the need of vacuum system thus developing a technique as efficient but at a low cost to come closer to an industrial process. During this master, an atmospheric pressure plasma reactor has been designed and realized. The reactor was built in a way to be able to optimize and control the experimental conditions (power, frequency, gases choices and flow) and allow the surface treatment of various polymers. To compare with the existing low pressure plasma technology, surface modifications of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) has been performed in different atmospheres (NH3, N2 + H2, and N2 + NH3 mixtures) with a low pressure radio-frequency glow discharge (RFGD), an FDBD and an APGD. The modified surfaces has been studied and compared with various surface analysis techniques. Surface functionalization obtained with the atmospheric pressure plasma reactor seems to be an effective, low cost method for the production of uniform surface modification with amino-groups that can subsequently be used to graft various chemical functionalities used for biomaterial compatibility.

Full textFolded structures are attractive to architects and engineers for their structural qualities as well as spatial and plastic qualities. Taking as a starting point a linear folded stripe, this research does not address the design of pleated surfaces but that of reticular structures. The design of structures with "holes" from folded stripes is an original angle of approach. From a conceptual point of view, the continuity caused by folds transforms the usual conception by separated nodes and bars of reticular structures. The use of continuous linear stripes is one possible approach to make more efficient the design of complex shapes by minimizing the produced offcuts. This research investigates new methods of designing curved shapes. The aims of this research are:- A classification of different possible approaches encountered when conceiving from folded stripes.- The study a modular folded elements which assembly allows the generation of various curved surfaces : the geometry of different configurations of folded stripes and the assemblies allowed will be described

Full textThis dissertation addresses the development and the testing of a simulation tool to be used to predict the behaviour of smart material/structures. Along with the development of the simulation tool, a new form of the model describing the behaviour of shape-memory alloy was developed and implemented. The proposed model was developed based on the existing cosine model, conventionally used in literature, but it uses hyperbolic tangent functions. The hyperbolic tangent function was chosen so as to allow the simulation of any range of temperatures. Experiments were performed to obtain the parameters to be used in the simulation and to validate the numerical results. Two different simulations were performed: a one dimensional FEA analysis with a two dimensional orientation (NiTi SMA wire simulation) and a three dimensional FEA analysis (NiTi SMA plate) [Msomi and Oliver, 2015]. Alongside the FEA analysis, two experiments were performed with the purpose of obtaining the material parameters to be used in FEA analysis and to compare the FEA results to the experimental results.
