Abstract:
This article presents selected geotechnical issues occurring at the foundation of drilling rigs for geological works included in the Operation Plan of a company performing geological works, in the aspect of designing and construction of their foundations and a yard. In the construction of drilling equipment, at least two main zones can be distinguished, often requiring separate foundations for individual machines: the zone near the borehole, including crane components, mast and drill pipe drive, and the so-called machine hall zone, including drive units and elements of mud system. The machine foundation is designed to mount a particular type of machine on it in order to transfer to the ground the static and dynamic loads generated during the movement of the machine. In particular, the current legislation, technical literature and standards were reviewed, especially: API recommended practice 51R and 4G, Working platforms for tracked plant, Eurocode 7 PN-EN 1997-2:2009 Standard. The values of safe bearing capacity of some soils and the magnitude of pressures generated by static and dynamic loads of selected drilling equipment were presented, which can be useful for preliminary assessment of the location of drilling equipment in the field and selection of surface and type of foundations. Typical examples of foundation of drilling rigs in various geotechnical conditions on direct foundations with the use of prefabricated elements such as reinforced concrete road slabs, wooden slabs and composite slabs based on HDPE plastic or on indirect ones with the use of micropiles were described. The following essential elements of the process of geotechnical design of the foundation of drilling rigs and their execution were indicated. According to legal regulations, the form of presentation of geotechnical foundation conditions and the scope of necessary tests should depend on assigning the building structure to a proper geotechnical category, which for practical purposes is tabulated in this article. The design and construction of foundations for drilling rigs should ensure, among other things, that their intrinsic vibrations are sufficiently different from those induced by subassemblies of the rig, that the vibration amplitudes are smaller than permissible, and that the foundations of individual machines are adequately separated from each other and from the rest of the facilities (yard). Conclusions on the safe foundation of drilling rigs on the ground, including, among others, the strengthening of the ground, design of independent building structures such as foundations for drilling rigs and their execution and removal were presented.

Abstract:
With the ever-increasing demand for resources, the task of geological surveys has increased rapidly, and automated geological drilling rigs that can improve the efficiency of geological surveys have become the mainstream research direction. Automated geological drilling rigs can improve construction efficiency, reduce labor intensity, and effectively reduce construction accidents. During the construction of geological survey operations, accidents such as drill breakage, stuck drill, and equipment damage, which are easily caused by drill pipe impact, occur from time to time. Therefore, drill pipe impact dynamics is currently a hot topic in academic research, but there are few studies that combine automated geological drilling rigs with drill pipe impact. This article starts with the research on the hydraulic system of the power head of the automatic drilling rig and studies the dynamics of the damage of the power head of the drilling rig caused by the impact of the drill pipe by means of hydraulic valve torque limit and closed-loop control of the speed. The oil valve group reduces the reverse torsional impact of the drill pipe on the hydraulic motor. At the same time, the requirements for the selection and pressure setting of the relief valve in the buffer filling oil valve group are proposed. The natural frequency of the relief valve is not less than 20 Hz, and the pressure is set to the working pressure 1.25 times. The effects of shock with or without the buffer filling oil valve group and the oil supply line on the power head motor were compared. The research results of this paper can provide theoretical reference and design basis for subsequent development of automated drilling rigs.

Abstract:
Jacket platforms are one of the most important and regularly used types of offshore structures for oil and gas extraction that have a big impact on the economy of the countries. In this paper, all aspects including design, analysis, construction and installing of the jacket type offshore structure, are summarized and classified. This type of structure is one of the specified platforms for shallow water, and for long term service, it also has the ability to carry large deck loads. This paper aims to present general guidance about the planning, design and construction of offshore jacket (template) platforms. Jacket platforms are fixed type platforms which are attached to the seabed using piles which provide stability against the wind, wave and current loads. Also, this type of offshore platform has a high initial and maintenance cost because of its exposure to corrosion, and cannot be reused after the end of its service period. Jacket platforms are most suitable for shallow water having no better alternative while it has the cost disadvantage for deep water.

Abstract:
The broad scale of the plan for the development of the Far North, Siberia, provides for the annual development of hundreds of millions of cubic meters of permafrost soils and rocks, most of which require the use of drilling and blasting operations. The most time consuming process of preparing rocks for excavation is the creation of wells. Drilling of permafrost soils, soils with rock inclusions, monolithic and fractured rocks requires careful analysis and detailed calculations for each type of rock. It should also be borne in mind that the harsh climatic conditions of work in the Far North, open mining fields, also imply a significant distance from any settlements, therefore, based on the above factors, special attention should be paid to investigate the problems of mobility and reliability of tractor drilling rigs. This article discusses the use of modern drilling machines, provides a comparison of a tractor drilling rig with a mechanical drive of a drill string with a machine with a hydraulic drive, lists the factors confirming the feasibility of using a hydraulic drive of a drilling string, examines the results of tests of drilling various rocks, as well as the effect of rock structure on vibrations pressure and increase in the flow rate of hydraulic fluid in the drive system of the machine.

This thesis details the design and construction of a rig for studying surface condensation and a rig for creating anodized metal oxides (AMOs). The condensation rig characterizes condensation for different surfaces; this is done with the use of known heat transfer principles to calculate characteristic heat fluxes and heat transfer coefficient values. Preliminary results have been shown to follow predictions derived from existing heat transfer principles, and have confirmed existing literature's assertion of increased effectiveness of dropwise condensation over filmwise condensation. The AMO rig fabricates anodized metal oxide surface samples by subjecting wafers coated with thin metal layers to voltage in the presence of acidic electrolytes. Initial fabricated anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) samples have shown to display the characteristic hierarchal nanopore structure of known fabricated AAO in literature. Both the condensation rig and the AMO rig will be used in current and future condensation and superhydrophobic surface research by the Varanasi group in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering.

This research has as its theoretical and methodological assumptions (1) the Narrative Inquiry (CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 2011), (2) the Systemic Functional Grammar (HALLIDAY, 1985, 1994; THOMPSON, 2002; EGGINS, 1994; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) and (3) the English for Specific Purposes Approach (ESP - HUTCHINSON; WATERS, 1987; CELANI, 2005; RAMOS, 2005), and its overall objective is to survey the meanings construed by the participants who are ESP practitioners and have not received a specific education to teach this approach at their undergraduation. The field texts and therefore the analises were divided into two distinct groups: the first with data generated from a questionnaire applied to nine professors from a federal university in the northeast of Brazil, which contains open and closed questions about their training and their experiences in teaching ESP; the second group, focusing this time on the experiences of three professors from the first group who were still teaching ESP, with data generated from interviews with these participants in addition to the data generated from their autobiographies and from the researcher?s as well. The computational tool WordSmith Tools 6.0 (SCOTT, 2012) was used to select, organize, and quantify data to be analyzed in the first group of texts, identifying the types of Processes and Participants through the Transitivity System (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004). The Processes which were more used by the professors in the questionnaire were the Material, followed by the Relational and then the Mental ones, indicating that most professors reported their actions related to the teaching of ESP, rated or evaluated the approach, their training to teach it and their experiences, hence, rarely showing their thoughts and emotions about teaching ESP. Most of the nine professors say they carry out needs analysis, but not all do it according to the authors cited by them or the ones that are considered a reference in this area, such as the ones used in this research as reference. Similarly, their definitions and conceptions of ESP, in most cases, differed from these authors. All the professors claim not having had specific education to teach ESP at the undergraduation. When examining the stories of the four teachers, in the second group of the field texts, based on meaning composition according to Ely, Vinz, Downing and Anzul (2001), it was revealed that the kind of knowledge they report using when they teach ESP is related to their Personal Practical Knowledge and their Professional Knowledge (ELBAZ, 1983; CLANDININ, 1988). In their autobiographies, metaphors were also identified and they represent their concepts of teaching and being a teacher. Through this research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of what teaching ESP might mean for professors in the researched context and also to the continuing education of ESP practitioners, as well as to a review of the curricula in the English language undergraduate courses and of the role of ESP in the training of these professionals

Abstract:
The discovery of the novel thermal cyclization of enediyne molecules within the Parsons group during studies directed towards the total synthesis of lactonamycin has stimulated an intense research into the cyclization of the enediynes. In this research different functionalised enediynes were synthesised to investigate:- (i) the scope and limitations of the thermal cyclization reactions, (ii) the proposed biradical mechanism for the cyclization reactions, (iii) the intermolecular trappings of the proposed biradical, and (iv) the effect of sterically demanding groups on the rate of cyclization. In the process of testing these objectives, we have been able to synthesize highly functionalised heterocyclic rings by simple thermal cyclization reactions without using any metal catalyst. We have discovered that the cyclizations may have involved free radical mechanism or an ene reaction, followed by a Diels – Alder cycloaddition reactions. Interestingly the cyclised compound 2.1 shows two stereogenic centres at C2 and C4 with an absolute configuration of R and S respectively. An in-depth exploration of the stereochemistry of these reactions may increase their application in controlling the stereochemistry of ring systems through simple metal free thermal cyclization reactions. Confirmation of the specific mechanism constitutes an ongoing research within the Parsons group. Conclusively cyclization of highly functionalised enediynes had been proved to be a versatile route to the synthesis of diverse heterocyclic compounds. The ease of cyclizations of a majority of the enediynes in this study has shown that functionalisation and diversification of the core enediyne systems could be utilized in the synthesis of pharmaceutically important antitumour drugs.

This thesis represents a didactic research linked to the Post-graduation Programme in Education of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte which aimed to approach the construction of the geometrical concepts of Volume of the Rectangular Parallelepiped, Area and Perimeter of the Rectangle adding a study of the Area of the Circle. The research was developed along with students from the 6th level of the Elementary School, in a public school in Natal/RN. The pedagogical intervention was made up of three moments: application of a diagnostic evaluation, instrument that enabled the creation of the teaching module by showing the level of the geometry knowledge of the students; introduction of a Teaching Module by Activities aiming to propose a reflexive didactic routing directed to the conceptual construction because we believed that such an approach would favor the consolidation of the learning process by becoming significant to the apprentice, and the accomplishment of a Final Evaluation through which we established a comparison of the results obtained before and after the teaching intervention. The data gathered were analyzed qualitatively by means of a study of understanding categories of mathematical concepts, in addition to using descriptive statistics under the quantitative aspect. Based on the theory of Richard Skemp, about categorization of mathematical knowledge, in the levels of Relational and Instrumental Understanding were achieved in contextual situations and varied proportions, thus enabling a contribution in the learning of the geometrical concepts studied along with the students who took part in the research. We believe that this work may contribute with reflections about the learning processes, a concern which remained during all the stages of the research, and also that the technical competence along with the knowledge about the constructivist theory will condition the implementation of a new dynamics to the teaching and learning processes. We hope that the present research work may add some contribution to the teaching practice in the context of the teaching of Mathematics for the intermediate levels of the Elementary School

Abstract:
The cleaning technology for exhaust air is an area under constant development. In collaboration with Ozone Tech Systems the project resulted in a lab scale test rig for air cleaning units. The test rig was designed primarily to investigate the mechanisms of an UV reactor as well as the life times of a hydrogen sulphide absorption bed and an activated carbon bed. The thesis consisted in the design of the system, the acquisition of units and the construction of the system followed by the modelling of the pollutant elimination in the UV reactor. Fluid dynamics of the process flow is neglected, while the light distribution is numerically calculated. Two separate pollutants were considered, one being volatile organic compounds represented by acetaldehyde, and the other being hydrogen sulphide, chosen due to their prevalence in exhausts. An experimental plan is developed to validate the model, find model parameters and finally to investigate process parameters in the UV reactor.

Keppel Fels produces make-to-order oil exploration rigs for the global market. Each rig requires close to 6000 metric tons of steel in the course of its production. Optimal management of this steel is very critical in this line of business. However, in recent years, demand for these rigs has been increasing at a tremendous rate and previous steel management policies are fast becoming unable to cope with this surge of demand. The thesis first looks at characterizing the nature of the demand of steel plates in the company. This led to the identification of key factors of demand, resulting in a classification system of the steel plates according to their demand behavior. This system further led to the crafting of various policies to manage the risks involved in the procurement of the steel plates. We propose to use the newsboy model to minimize the inventory costs, subject to uncertain demand. The conclusion of the thesis presents the optimized steel plate procurement quantities for the company.

Abstract:
Current market trends in the construction of newbuild drilling rigs indicate that the market is driven by demand for ultra-deepwater capacity semi-submersible rigs and drillships. These drilling vessels have capacity to drill in water depths of up to 12,000ft and possibly beyond in the near future. With increase in water depth capacity, more complex and heavier BOP stacks are required. Many modern drilling vessels are now incorporating BOPs with capacities of 20ksi pressure and up to 7 shear/seal rams incorporated. This leads to increased height and weight in the BOP. Whilst newbuild drilling vessels will be required to operate in water depths from 1,500ft to 12,000ft whilst on DP mode, deepwater semi-submersible drilling rigs will also have capability for operation in water depths <1,500ft using conventional mooring. Recent experience with modern deepwater rigs with large BOP stacks in water depth of 1,500ft or less suggests increased risk of fatigue when compared to 3rd generation rigs. If future trends continue with larger BOP stacks being designed then the problem of wellhead fatigue with modern deepwater drilling vessels is likely to become more acute. As noted in previous studies the water depth at drillsite has a major impact on the level of fatigue accumulated in the wellhead system. The main driver for this has been found to be the height and weight of the BOP. With requirements for newbuild drilling rigs for 12,000ft water depth capacity being the industry norm, and with increased requirements for BOP functionality, the gap between wellhead loading from 3rd generation and 6th generation rigs is widening. Given that many 3rd generation rigs will likely be decommissioned in the coming years then the usage of 6th generation rigs for shallow water operations will only become more commonplace due to rig availability. Thus, unless market conditions dictate the construction of smaller and lighter BOP stacks, the design of shallow water wells will be critical to ensure fatigue loading on the wellhead and conductor is kept to a minimum. This paper presents a summary of the results of a series of parameter studies carried out to assess a range of options for optimisation of casing and conductor design for 6th generation rigs in shallow water. Various recommendations are made as part of this study as to the addition of supplemental casing and conductor strings of varying sizes and wall thickness to ensure a robust conductor system design for fatigue performance.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents an innovative concept to run Electrical Submersible Pumps (ESP) and upper completion utilizing dual derrick drillship rigs in deep water wells. The availability of a second deck to assemble, test and rack long assemblies brings the possibility to conduct a safer, efficient and reliable operation. The experience in Brazil running complex completions and high horsepower ESPs shows how important is to implement initiatives to reduce rig time. The main objective of the new process is to have every completion tool readily available in the drilling deck, requiring minimum time to connect it to the completion string. In the standard process, the tool sits in the pipe deck until completion string reaches its set position and only then the equipment is brought into the rig floor to be serviced and made up to the completion string. The methodology to assemble ESP and completion tools offline in the auxiliary derrick was developed in partnership with the operator, the service company, and the drilling rig contractor. The offline preparation concept was considered as part of the completion design phase analyzing every step of the upper completion run, looking for efficiency improvement and reduced total rig time. The modern automated pipe handling system was used to manipulate the long and heavy assemblies from the auxiliary deck to the racking system and from the racking system to the main deck without any safety concern, and with minimal human intervention. Eight deep-water operations were completed in Brazil using the new concept and the results brought important rig time reduction in the upper completion running time. The tools that were part of the completion included DHSV, permanent downhole gauges, chemical injection valves, 1600 HP ESP system and tubing test valves. The new process allows the team to service equipment without the usual operation rush reducing installation related failure therefore increasing equipment reliability. The methodology presented on this paper contributes to oil industry as a field-proven reference for offshore ESP and completion deployment technique reducing HSE exposure and total well construction cost. This is particularly important for deep and ultra-deepwater projects which are associated with high intervention costs. Dual derrick rigs were designed with focus to improve drilling operations and after the new process development, the modern robotized machinery empowers ESP and completion activities with improved efficiencies.

Abstract:
The problem of accurately predicting the performance of a sailing vessel has been researched since the turn of the century. Improvements in sail construction and materials have placed greater importance on optimizing sail aerodynamics. The goal of this research was to devise a testing method which would allow simple, inexpensive testing of sails to be conducted. This effort culminated in the design and construction of an outdoor sailing dynamometer which can measure all of the forces and moments produced by a sail. The apparatus is capable of testing full-size dinghy rigs or scaled-down offshore racers. It may be used both for rig selection and for the evaluation of different sail designs. High quality results may be achieved with a minimum expenditure of time and capital.

Abstract:
This paper summarizes experimental results of an aerodynamic performance study carried out on two full stage turbine test rigs. The stage under investigation was designed as a gas generator turbine for a small jet engine produced by PBS (the TJ100 engine with thrust of 1100 N and turbine tip diameter of 141 mm). The investigation was carried out alternatively on two full-stage test rigs (in-scale and scaled-up) integrated into a cool flow closed-loop wind tunnel located at VZLU. Firstly, the in-scale testing, focusing on an overall stage performance measured by means of a hydraulic dynamometer was arranged. Furthermore, some time-averaged flow field parameters in terms of total pressure, velocity and angles were acquired along the channel height upstream and downstream of the stage. The flow path authenticity and construction simplicity were strictly followed during the rig design phase and therefore original parts of the engine were mostly used. Then, the verification of results was performed with the stage scaled-up by factor 2.27. The overall stage performance was measured and compared with results of the in-scale measurement. Moreover, detail unsteady flow field measurement at the rotor exit was performed. Time-resolved data were analysed in order to study the influences of the stage load on the stage performance.

Abstract:
The University of Connecticut Department of Mechanical Engineering has developed an industry recognized Senior Design Capstone course that provides students the opportunity for a major design experience. This paper will discuss the issues and challenges associated with project demonstrated on the base of the Search for Optimal Friction Resistant Material to Cover Contact Surfaces in an Electric Manual Switch. In order to determine the viability of potential substitute materials, the team produced custom testing rigs to evaluate material wear and corrosion performance. The construction of these rigs, the fabrication of the testing coupons, testing results and the final choice of the covering material were the primary deliverables of this project. The wear rig allowed the team to determine mechanical performance on the basis of mass loss. In the evaluation of mechanical performance, the coated test coupons were revolved on a testing plate while a flat coated column contacted the surface to wear the plating. After a certain number of cycles, the coupons were subjected to environmental testing. The corrosion rig was designed to provide aggressive corrosion on the worn coupons, and was modeled after the industry standard salt fog test. The worn test coupons were immersed in a humid salt fog test chamber and held at temperature until corroded. A series of calibration checks were completed to evaluate the UConn test severity to ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) standard testing. The surfaces before and after the corrosion process were analyzed in a number of ways. Optical microscopy, profilometry, and surface metrology techniques were employed to determine which platings were likely to meet the consumer standards necessary for replacement. The large set of data on volume loss, mass loss, and surface degradation provided good metrics for the evaluation of material suitability. The project described in this paper is based on the contribution of the students’ team as well as is the result of consulting effort of the faculty who were directly involved in the course and also the other department’s faculty who were consulting the detail processes. General Electric (GE) especially its Industrial Solution Division that sponsored the project, is a company that provides a wide variety of services in electrical appliances, power, and home and business solutions. It has tasked the team with identifying a suitable replacement for Hexavalent Chromium Chromate passivation. This material is plated on many components in GE electrical appliances due to its resistance to abrasion and corrosion. However, because of changing regulations and the health risks that come from dealing with HCC, the sponsor has determined that it is necessary to remove the plating from production by 2019. In order to determine the viability of potential substitute materials, the team produced custom testing rigs to evaluate material wear and corrosion performance. The construction of these rigs and the fabrication of the 400+ testing coupons, the environmental and mechanical tests results and the final conclusions were the primary deliverables of this project. The team examined three different plating materials (JS 600, trivalent chrome, and zinc phosphate) and compared their performance to that of the original HCC plating. The resulting comparative analysis drove the final recommendation of the best candidate material for the sponsor on the basis of mechanical and environmental performance.

Abstract:
This paper will discuss how the project team planned, designed and constructed a unique and innovative casing sleeve as one of the key solutions to overcome a major threat to the completion of a horizontal directional drilling (“HDD”) project (“Fraser River South Arm Crossing Upgrade Project” or “Fraser River Crossing”). In 2009 FortisBC Energy Inc. (“FortisBC”) started construction to upgrade its NPS 20 and NPS 24 pipeline crossings of the Fraser River, the largest river in the province of BC, Canada via HDD. Due to the poor surface geology at this location on the Fraser River, temporary surface casings were required on both sides of the crossing to get drilling activities into a formation suitable for conducting an HDD crossing. As a result, the Fraser River Crossing required an HDD rig to drill concurrently from either side of the crossing in order to create a continuous borehole (also known as an intersect crossing). During the pullback of the NPS 24 - 1.35 km crossing section, a major mechanical failure occurred when over 95% of the length had been pulled through. After multiple attempts to resume pullback by the HDD rigs and other onsite equipment were unsuccessful, the project team was left with the major challenge(s) of determining how else the crossing could be completed and the pipeline tied in on both sides of the river without incurring major business interruption in a busy industrial section of Richmond, BC. Moreover, FortisBC was faced with the possibility of having to abandon the project and the millions spent up to that point in time with no value. This paper will focus on how the project team overcame the challenge and mitigated long term operational issues that included maintaining adequate cathodic protection. Learn how the combined efforts of a multi-disciplined project team planned, designed, fabricated and ultimately successfully inserted an innovative casing sleeve, although unproven at the time and with its share of additional risks, after reviewing an extensive assessment of numerous alternatives as the optimum solution in order for FortisBC to finally complete the upgrade of its pipeline system.
