These stages consist of the literal sacrifice of human beings to a god, the sacrifice of one’s own instincts to a god, and the sacrifice of God Himself. It is argued that in The Wicker Man and Breaking the Waves, the first two stages appear in conjunction with a view of sacrifice that is economical in nature. Abstract:
This concluding chapter addresses the mortality and vulnerability that humans and animals share. The destruction of harvests, the scorched fields, the forest fires, and the devastation of the countryside make no distinctions. They affect animals and humans alike. If people are willing to include animals in their thought of living-with, then they must divide the relations that compose it into two categories. First, there are the relations that bind animals—notably but not exclusively domestic animals—to the humans on whom they depend. Second, there are the relations that “attach” animals to all other animals, whether of the same or of different species. The relationship in the first case is unequal and the violence of potential mistreatment is devoid of reciprocity: the animal is unilaterally exposed to the irruption of such violence. In the second case, the relationship is inscribed in a different order, which people should not describe too hastily. When these relations are destroyed, the destruction occurs not by itself and from within the relationship, but as the result of an external force. This is to say that if people wish to qualify the relations between humans and animals as “moral and political,” they must not understand this characterization in the same way they encountered it in murderous consent. The two ways in which humans interject violence into the world of animals mark the distinction.

This chapter addresses market equilibria for competitive firms, firms that act as price takers. It develops a theory which is based on the hypothesis that firms and consumers act as if they have no effect on prices; consumers choose what to consume and firms choose their production plans in the belief that the prices they see are unaffected by their decisions. There are two ways to proceed in the theory. One could continue analysis of general equilibrium in the style of Chapter 6, but with firms added to the story. Or one can undertake partial equilibrium analysis. The chapter begins with the classic partial equilibrium analysis of perfect competition. It then develops an example that shows how a partial equilibrium perspective can be misleading, before discussing general equilibrium with firms.

Abstract:
In recent years, firms that rely on fintech to develop and deliver financial products and services have become increasingly important in the banking and financial sector. Nevertheless, fintech products raise various ethical and legal issues, particularly relating to consumer rights. These issues can be analyzed in the light of behavioral law and economics which suggest that prevalent cognitive biases systematically affect the judgment of individuals. To mitigate this bounded rationality, it is possible to guide the decision-making processes through the use of nudges and configured sets of choices. A good example is fintech gamification, defined as the use of game-related mechanisms in other areas, particularly websites or social networks. However, the use of nudges for commercial purposes is often associated with some form of manipulative tactics explicitly aimed at exploiting individuals' biases without their consent. In this context, recourse to the law is useful as it provides for the minimum requirements needed to regulate the relationship between a firm and its customers.

Abstract:
In recent years, Korean firms have struggled with slowdowns of both these world-first developments and their export to overseas markets. Despite technological development process, however, important questions remain with respect to how non-technological capabilities such as organizational, regulatory, and financial innovation affect accumulation and failure. To address these concerns, the key components of a conceptual framework for investigating non-technological capabilities for transition consist of the existing government, R&D organizations, and inter-firm relations. We analyze the performance and limitations of non-technological capabilities in the process of transition from the catch-up system to the innovation-based system in Korea. Using the case study of system rather than mass products, we hope that this research can contribute to the understating of non-technological features of energy-sector transitional dynamics in Korea. Finally this research would provide a new approach to the challenges from a non-technological aspect and can also provide differentiated science and technology policy strategies for the catch-up economies.

Abstract:
Fire is ubiquitous throughout the global boreal forest (Wein 1983, Payette 1992, Goldammer and Furyaev 1996, Kasischke and Stocks 2000). The inter- and intra-annual patterns of fire in this biome depend on several interrelated factors, including the quantity and quality of fuel, fuel moisture, and sources of ignition. Fire cycles in different boreal forest types vary between 25 and >200 years (Heinselman 1981, Yarie 1981, Payette 1992, Conard and Ivanova 1998). Although the increased presence of humans in some regions of boreal forest has undoubtedly changed the fire regime (DeWilde 2003), natural fire is still a dominant factor in ecosystem processes throughout this biome. Boreal forest fires are similar to those of other forests in that they vary between surface and crown fires, depending on forest type and climatic factors. Surface fires kill and consume most of the understory vegetation, as well as portions of the litter or duff lying on the forest floor, resulting in varying degrees of mortality of canopy and subcanopy trees. Crown fires consume large amounts of the smaller plant parts (or fuels) present as leaves, needles, twigs, and small branches and kill all trees. These fires are important in initiating secondary succession (Lutz 1956, Heinselman 1981, Van Cleve and Viereck 1981, Van Cleve et al. 1986, Viereck 1983, Viereck et al. 1986). Unlike fires in other forest types, smoldering ground fires in the boreal forest can combust a significant fraction of the deep organic (fibric and humic) soils in forests overlying permafrost (Dyrness and Norum 1983, Landhauesser and Wein 1993, Kasischke et al. 2000a, Miyanishi and Johnson 2003). During periods of drought, when water tables are low, or prior to spring thaw, organic soils in peatlands can become dry enough to burn, as well (Zoltai et al. 1998, Turetsky and Wieder 2001, Turetsky et al. 2002).

Abstract:
Transnational teaching collaborations have many advantages, but also create challenges. Many challenges relate to distances between partner countries. The CAGE (cultural, administrative, geographic, economic) framework helps to assess and classify the impact of various distances. The framework was initially developed for a business context. We test the usability of the CAGE model in a higher education institution (HEI) context by relying on insights from an EU-teaching collaboration project. Within the project, students and lecturers from different HEIs consult real-life firms in going abroad.

To begin this investigation, one asks, ‘What is an Engineer’s Design Studio?’ This paper examines the work and statements of three groups in an attempt to answer this question and define their significance. It must be acknowledged that the term ‘Design Studio’ is not a label chosen by all of these firms, but one suggested here to encapsulate their work. An Engineer’s Design Studio is a group of engineers engaging in building design. In fact, they are small specialist groups that seek to contribute to the design by challenging the existing assumptions in the design process. By asking bigger que

Abstract:
The frictional behavior of the C60 intercalated graphite films with a large size of 2.3×2.3mm2 is reported. The C60 intercalated graphite films consist of alternating close-packed C60 monolayers and graphite layers (graphenes), and thus many sliding planes are formed between each C60 monolayer and graphene. The intercalation of C60 molecules into graphite films results in superlubricity where frictional forces are observed to be stationarily zero.

Electroplated copper thin films have been used for interconnection of semiconductor devices. Both the mechanical and electrical properties of the films were found to be quite different from those of bulk material, and thus, the reliability of the devices is not so high as to be expected. The main reason for the difference was found to be their micro texture. When the films consist of fine columnar grains with weak grain boundaries, their mechanical properties show strong anisotropy and complicated fracture mode. Thus, the fatigue strength of the electroplated copper thin films was measured und

This paper presents the possibility of piezoelectric RF-MEMS switches for low voltage operation. The switches we fabricated consist of micro-cantilevers using PZT thin films with the length of 490 μm and the width of 87 μm. The cantilevers are actuated as unimorph actuators that can be deflected by applying voltage between upper and lower electrodes. We could obtain large tip deflection of 3 μm even at the low voltage of 5.0V, which is well compatible with conventional IC drivers. This result indicates that the RF-MEMS switches using piezoelectric PZT thin films is advantageous to the low volt

A chemical depth profile in lubricant films, carbon films, and their interfaces is an informative parameter for hard disk media because molecular features of lubricants bonded to a surface of carbon overcoats (COCs), which usually consist of a nitrogen doped layer, are important to achieve high tribological performance. However, it was difficult to analyze their interfaces with high depth resolution because thickness of lubricant films and COC films are so thin, i.e. 1.5nm and 2nm, respectively.
