Thomas Angus Lyall Paton was born in Jersey on 10 May 1905, a descendant of a family of flaxspinners from Montrose. His father was a journalist and author with a classics degree from Oxford University. His mother was the daughter of a civil engineering contractor named Easton Gibb and his uncle was Alexander Gibb, founder of the firm of consulting engineers bearing his name, with which Angus Paton spent his whole working career.

A 6.6km long elevated expressway has been built along an existing route in a busy part of Tehran. The main requirements of the client, the Municipality of Tehran, were rapid construction and minimum disturbance to the existing traffic below. The main requirements of the design-and-build contractor, SR Special Group, from the design team, Karane Consulting Engineers, were buildability and cost-effectiveness. This paper describes the design and construction of this elevated expressway.
