Full textIn my PHD thesis I analysed the role of consumers with regard to environmental protection in the European Union and in other national contexts, China and Russia. At first, I took into consideration European environmental legislation, and particularly the transition from a command and control approach (that refers to environmental policy that relies on regulation, permission, prohibition, standard setting and enforcement) to a voluntary approach (that includes agreements on environmental performance negotiated with industrial and public programmes in which firms can volunteer to participate). In particular I have studied the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (E.M.A.S), a voluntary environmental management instrument, which was developed in 1993 by the European Commission. It enables organizations to assess, manage and continuously improve their environmental performance. Moreover I have studied the UE ECOLABEL, that deals with consumer products and that specifies their ecological criteria. I have also examined the reasons for the spread of environmental labels, with a view to creating a European single market for green products, the issue of environmental information as a fundamental consumer’s right and deciding factor for purchasing options and market influence, and lastly the theme of greenwashing. The thesis continues with the analysis of Russian and Chinese legal system on the issue of environmental information to consumers and eco-labels, verifying the presence of similar voluntary instruments. Similarly to the European Union, in the Russian context, the traditional environmental protection instruments, based on a command and control approach, have proved to be ineffective. However, differently from the UE, also the voluntary instruments, on a national level, have proved to be useless to provide a sufficiently high standard of environmental safeguard, partly due to a lack of an adequate national regulatory support. However, in the last few years, organizations and associations have started to organize themselves by creating 'local' environmental certification systems (eg Vitality Leaf in St. Petersburg), but they have been shown to be very limited. Lastly, regarding the Chinese context, I found, during my analysis, that the first China Environmental Label was born for economic reasons, but recently the Government has been taking a more open position about eco-sustainability issues, and now there are several environmental products’ certifications which cover different areas of production and trade (China Energy Label, China Environmental Certification, China Water Conservation Certification).

Full textThis study aims to explore existing paradoxes in the offer of food sustainable products and consequently consumers’ behaviours (coping strategies) (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984) at the time of this perception. For this purpose, the theoretical model of Mick and Fournier (1998), built initially for studying the paradoxes of modern technologies, were adapted to sustainable food consumption. At methodological level, a qualitative survey was conducted among 84 “ordinary” consumers in France and Italy. Later other 18 subjects, usually involved into sustainable purchases (participants of AMAP, GAS), were interviewed. The semi-structured interviews shed light on some differences between “ordinary” consumers of the two countries when they adopted coping strategies to go beyond perceived paradoxes. Thus we proposed three ordinary consumers’ profiles. On the contrary engaged individuals are like a more homogeny group going over national boundaries. They agree with paradoxes and sustainable practices. In addition, the research pointed out some divergent aspects connected with specific context, for instance market of sustainable food products, communication over this offer and social cultural characteristics. Finally, this work had three objectives: theoretical to verify the paradoxes listed and evocated consumers’ strategies by French and Italian consumers; methodological regarding the adaptation of the conceptual model “gears” of Mick et Fournier (1998) to the context of sustainable consumption; and then practical ones such as identification of barriers for developing sustainable consumption and specific possible ways of growth: more attention to environmental aspects in France (“filière nord/nord” of organic, fairly, local French peasants) and ethics products in Italy (products issued from social economies).
