This chapter is based on consumer behavior theories and analyses consumers' perspectives about camping as a tourism alternative. It explores motivations and several relevant factors that influence the attitudes and behaviors of tourists regarding camping activities. The methodology was qualitative and used focus groups as a data collection tool. A content and thematic analysis was adopted as data mining technique. Results provide empirical support to the influence of subjective norms, relevant others' preference for camping, and sustainable consumer profile on attitudes toward camping which influence camping intention. Moreover, camping intention, motivations, relevant others' preference for camping, perceived control, and past experience affect camping behavior. Overall, this chapter shows that consumer behavior theories and models provide very interesting cues on campers' decision process, offering alternative and complementing views to the extant literature, namely to the studies using the popular push-pull approach.

Measures of Internet-usage-process gratifications and Internet socialization gratifications were utilized to test for differences between light and heavy Internet users in the consumer market, and it was expected that heavy users would be more socially motivated in their Internet use while light users would be more motivated by gratifications related to usage processes. However, results indicate that both heavy and light users are more motivated by usage factors, although the difference between usage and social motivation was more pronounced for heavy users. Heavy users are more socially motivated than light users, but both heavy and light users show a significant preference for process uses and gratifications as compared to social uses and gratifications for Internet use.

In this paper, the authors demonstrate that language diversity imposes a significant barrier in message communication like Short Messaging Service (SMS). SMS and other messaging services, including Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and e-mail, are widely used for person-to-person and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) communications due to their reach, simplicity and reliability of delivery. Reach and service delivery can be further enhanced if the message is delivered in the recipient’s preferred language. Using language translation software and a database server, the authors show that the messages can be delivered as per language preference of the recipient irrespective of the language of the original message. They demonstrate the proposed mechanism can deliver a large number of services, such as education, health care management, notification in emergency situations, news and weather reports, to those who are currently not able to access them due to language barrier.

Abstract:
A critical task in product design is mapping information from consumer space to design space. Currently, this process is largely dependent on the designer to identify and map how psychological and consumer level factors relate to engineered product attributes. In this way, current methodologies lack provision to test a designer’s cognitive reasoning, which could introduce bias while mapping from consumer to design space. Cyber-Empathic Design is a novel framework where user-product interaction data is acquired using embedded sensors. To understand consumer perceptions about a particular produc

Developing technology causes companies in a market to compete with each other in challenging ways. In addition to a holistic marketing concept which focuses on the needs of target markets and delivering superior value, marketing should be adapted with new technology to fulfill consumer needs. Although many strategies have been introduced for marketing, digital marketing or marketing 4.0 is a new generation of marketing that engages with the audience through digital tools. These days, online shopping is only too popular among consumers. Many factors which affect customer decision during online

This study analyses the possibility of differentiation in the supply of different types of products from the processing of the olive tree fruit in order to make them more appealing to the target audience. Possibilities have been identified to distinguish the business from other market participants and to better position it on the market through cost leadership or differentiation of product quality. An analysis has been conducted of a product differentiation method applying five factors facilitating the positioning of the brand to achieve better satisfaction of consumer preferences and earn the

This paper presents a redesign method supporting sustainable design of products. The method correlates product modularity with various life cycle directions at the conceptual stage of design. In the case of product redesign, the modular design approach allows designers to focus on increasing the sustainability of a product in terms of recyclability, disassembly and reduction of resource usage at the conceptual stage. By stepping back to the conceptual design phase and analyzing the product free from its current embodiment solutions, the scope of redesign and the potential product improvement i

Abstract:
While discrete choice analysis is prevalent in capturing consumers’ preferences and describing their choice behaviors in product design, the traditional choice modeling approach assumes that each individual makes independent decisions, without considering the social impact. However, empirical studies show that choice is social — influenced by many factors beyond engineering performance of a product and consumer attributes. To alleviate this limitation, we propose a new choice modeling framework to capture the dynamic influence from social network on consumer adoption of new products. By introd

Efficient disassembly operation is considered a promising approach toward waste reduction and End-of-Use (EOU) product recovery. However, many kinds of uncertainty exist during the product lifecycle which make disassembly decision a complicated process. The optimum disassembly sequence may vary at different milestones depending on the purpose of disassembly (repair, maintenance, reuse and recovery), product quality conditions and external factors such as consumer preference, and the market value of EOU components. A disassembly sequence which is optimum for one purpose may not be optimum in fu
