Cholak, Ozlem. "Revisiting the union of marriage : beyond consummation?" Thesis, Keele University, 2014. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/1333/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis utilises radical feminism to assess whether it could be argued that marriage in the UK context has moved beyond a sexual definition: beyond consummation. The research looks at alternative relationship forms that have emerged to challenge sexual requirements in relationship law, including civil partnerships, same sex marriage and the marriages and civil partnerships of transsexuals. The thesis argues that through incorporating a nullity clause in matrimonial law on the basis of non-consummation, the law effectively requires sex from its heterosexual married citizens. A review of published research in strategic management journals reveals that this topic has yet to undergo rigorous academic examination. Putting the M&A non-consummation phenomenon under a strategic management lens, this study asks the following research questions about the acquiring firm: 1) How does an M&A NCD affect the market value of firms? 2) Under what conditions does an M&A non-consummation enhance firms' value? 3) How can an NCD be executed so

The 1950s was perhaps the ‘golden age’ of marriage with a low marriage age, a high marriage rate and the seemingly ubiquitous ‘white wedding’. The ‘big day’ was not just the bride’s day: what did the process of getting married mean to the man and for masculinity? Starting after the Great War, this thesis charts the rise of the ritualistic engagement, the modern white wedding and the more widely available honeymoon holiday, to show changes and continuities in English masculinity by considering power relations between men and women, and between men. Consummation was the one term about which Kenneth Burke wasn't particularly long-winded - odd considering his claim that it was the apex of his theory of form. Perhaps Burke never explained exactly what consummation was because he himself was never clear on the subject, as he told John Woodcock in an interview toward the end of his career. Burke began conceptualizing his theory of form early on - in his 20s - and published it in his first critical book, Counter-Statement, in 1931. At that time, Burke's theory of form had already taken one evolutionary step - from self-expression, with the focu

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the notion of the Kingdom of God in Jürgen Moltmann’s eschatology. The notion of the Kingdom of God is understood in many different ways, most of which bears very little relevance to secular life. The problem is therefore created of people either denying the existence of such a Kingdom (because of its deemed irrelevance) or emphasising the Kingdom to such an extent that the problems confronting life are ignored. It is the hypothesis that Moltmann puts forward an understanding of the Kingdom of God that is relevant to our daily existence. The notion of the Kingdom o

In contemporary society, book readers are increasingly being valued as consumers. Literacy and reading are often subjected to an economic logic and seen as constituting economic operations in themselves. The overall research objective is to explore whether and to what extent book reading as consumption practice belongs with traditional understandings of economy and culture, consumption and value. This entails studies on different levels: theoretical, methodological and meta-theoretical.
