Girão, Viviana Inês Murta. "Glasses' makeup: the simple and the combined effect of color and shape on perceived volume and beverage intake." Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/9662.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
In order to understand the context of beverages’ intake, it is crucial to bear in mind that there are a wide number of environmental cues which affect both the frequency and the volume ingested by consumers (Wansink, 2004). The horizontal-vertical illusion and the size-contrast illusion are the main causes to the biases regarding the amount of beverage consumed, inasmuch it is known that consumers use heuristics to make area and volume assessments (Krider, Raghubir and Krishna, 2001; Raghubir and Krishna, 1999). Hence, it is relevant to consider cues such as the shape and the size of packages, containers, (Folkes and Matta, 2004; Krider, Raghubir and Krishna, 2001; Raghubir and Krishna, 1999; Wansink and Park, 2001; Wansink and Ittersum, 2003; Wansink, 1996; Wansink, Van Ittersum and Painter, 2006) in what regards to their impact on both perceived and actual consumption. However, the simple and combined effect of color and shape on perceived consumption and intake via the effect of the vertical-horizontal illusion on the perceived amount of beverage has been disregarded in the past. The results of the experiment conducted showed that glasses’ elongation positively influences the perceived volume, while indirectly and inversely affects perceived consumption, the amount of sparkling water being constant on the experiment. Nevertheless, the experiment failed to show the simple and the combined effects of color and shape on volume perceptions and volume ingested by subjects.

Abstract:
The Brazilian retail has been experiencing a professionalization process that gradually is getting in line with its market importance. Several years after the initial adjustments post Real Plan, the period between 2000 and 2007 offered more appropriate information to conduct a thorough analysis on the Brazilian retail sales dynamics. The purpose of this study is to contribute with an additional empirical analysis about the consumption relationships, especially those related to retail sales and its connection with wage income revenues, seasonal variables, interest and the conditions of access to consumer credit in the Brazilian economy. This study is based on the consumption theory which derives from the intersection of micro and macro economy. Starting with a set of driving questions about the aggregate behavior of retail sales, the study presents five hypothesis about the relationships between the consumer income and retail sales; the association between sales trends and the innovations in the consumer credit market, interest , seasonality and payment terms and a leverage index that associates credit volume and consumer income. The study developed and tested econometric models of time series in single and multiple equation systems, simultaneous equations, that used the inclusion of self-regressive terms and retarded variables. The time series of retail sales indexes, wage income revenues and credit conditions have been pulled out of the time series available from IPEADATA. The result analysis indicates a long term relationship between retail sales and the wage income revenue, confirming a strong fourth quarter seasonality and Christmas season over the whole year period. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that the consumer is sensitive primarily to interest and payment terms and secondly to credit leverage. An evaluation of the feedback function to impulse indicates a sales reaction trend period of approximately five months in regard to interest and leverage and a stabilization trend towards a lower position after the interest impact.

Abstract:
The essay contains an assessment of water reservoirs, where an examination and analysis of storage volumes and construction solutions are carried out. Today there are no clear guidelines for how reservoirs in smaller communities should be designed and dimensioned to ensure water quality and guarantee a safe water supply. The goal and purpose of the essay is to calculate a storage volume, identify important aspects to consider in designing a reservoir, and present advantages with and the need of a water reservoir based on consumption variations. The assessment is limited to Lammhults’s conditions where interviews, observations, literature studies, analyses and calculations serve as a foundation for the theory and the result. The result demonstrates, among other things, difficulties, difficulties in analyzing consumption variations, the importance of local correct statistics and questioning of existing methods of dimensioning a storage volume. The essay partially some problem areas, but further studies are required to find solutions in the sector and straight guidelines regarding dimensions and design of reservoirs.

Abstract:
It is available in the market several types of foods for dogs, that the determination of which food to supply and the amount of this that should be supplied to the animals is not a simple task. Based on this, the aim of the present study was to determine the effects of two dry commercial foods and two supply types in the food consumption, in live and metabolic weights, fecal and corporal score and fecal volume. For so much four animals were used of the race Border Collie to which two foods were supplied, food A ("super premium") and food B (popular), distributed in two ways "ad libitum" (AV) and controlled (C). These animals received the two foods supplied of the two manners during 4 experimental periods with 10 days of duration each (6 days of adaptation and 4 of data collection). The animals were weighted and its corporal score was observed in data collection days of the 4 periods. These dogs were submitted to the daily activity during the all 40 days of the experiment. The foods were supplied in two schedules 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, and the discard amount of the previous meal were picked up and weighed before the supply of the next. So it was possible the determination of the daily food consumption of the animals. In the days of collection, total collection of the feces was accomplished in order to determine its volume and score. The results were analyzed being used the SAS program. With the statistical analysis it could be determined that the food A is really of better quality than the food B, based mainly in the fecal volume and score, and that the amount of supplied food was enough to satisfy the daily demands of the active animals, even having been specified for animals in maintenance.

Sajjad, Sajjad Hussain. "Observational and modelling approaches to study urban climate : application on Pakistan." Phd thesis, Université de Strasbourg, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01044727.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to study the urban climate, mainly by focusing on urban temperature trends. The specific focus is to understand the reasons of increase in minimum temperature through observational and modelling techniques. For this purpose, the temperatures data from 1950 to 2004 measured on several meteorological stations of Pakistan is studied and analyzed. Daily averaged annual and seasonal minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperature data of 37 meteorological observatories of Pakistan (17 urban, 7 town and 13 rural) from 1950 to 2004 is first homogenized and then analyzed. The results show that after 1980s Tmin and Tmax increase faster than the period before 1980s at urban areas. During 1980-2004, the increase in Tmin at major urban stations is observed higher than the smaller towns and rural stations. To understand, the effect of the size of the city, changing land use and the building height on the evolution of minimum and maximum temperatures in urban areas has been studied by using the FVM (Finite Volume Model) model and the simulations are run for three days starting at 00:00 (GMT) on 19th day of each month and ending at 00:00 (GMT) on 22nd day of each month. For each month, 48 possible combinations of simulation scenarios are run (4*4*3) and in total, 576 simulations (48*12) are run for a year. The main results show that Tmin and Tmax increase when urban fraction u, city size r and building height h increase. But it is noticed that Tmax increases more than the Tmin when u increases, Tmin increases more than the Tmax when r increases and Tmin increases more than the Tmax when h increases. Among all urban factors (urban fraction u, city size r and building's height h), city size is the major factor that mainly contributes to increase the minimum temperature more than the maximum temperature in urban areas.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Despite the good results and good reproducibility of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GBP), discussions about technical aspects still remain. Postoperative anatomy can influence the result in weight loss, as the postoperative (PO) quality-of-life. Surgical results are nowadays attributed to restriction, promoted by the small neo-stomach volume and its emptying, as well as metabolic factors. These anatomical and functional influences on surgical results are often poorly evaluated, and yet not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the gastric pouch volume and its emptying rate on weight loss, and food tolerance, in the late PO of GBP. METHOD: Patients followed-up at HC-FMUSP in late PO of GBP; percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL), weight regained (%EWLregain), food tolerance with specific questionnaire (Suter Score, SS), gastric pouch volumetry (V) by three-dimensional computed tomography (CT3D), and pouch emptying rate by scintigraphy, evaluated by retention percentage (%Ret) in 1, 2, 4 hours, were assessed. Cutoffs were identified for %Ret at 1 hour (%Ret1) and V. From these parameters the sample was categorized by V and %Ret1, looking for associations between V and %Ret and results in weight loss and food tolerance. RESULTS: Eighty patients were enrolled and 67 completed the study. The median age was 51 years, 91.04% were female, with initial median BMI of 51.44 kg/m2. The PO median follow-up time was 47 months. The sample showed median of 60.27% as EWLnadir as PO better weight loss, with 16.13% of EWLregain. The median V was 28mL; %Ret at 1, 2, 4 hours were 8%, 2%, 1%, respectively. The median score of SS was 21. The cutoff points considered were V=40mL, and %Ret1=12% and 25%. Subgroups were compared by V (V <= 40mL, V > 40mL) and Ret1% (%Ret1 <= 12%, 12% < %Ret1 < 25%, and %Ret1 >= 25%). The categorized analysis by V found associations between V<=40mL and higher emptying speeds up to 2 hours (V <= 40mL: %Ret1=6, %Ret2=2, p=0.009; V > 40mL: %Ret1=44, %Ret2=13.5, p=0.045). In the categorized analysis by %Ret1, it was found association between higher emptying speed in 1 hour and higher late PO weight loss, represented by lower %EWLregain (p=0.036), and higher late %EWL (p=0.033) in the group with %Ret1<=12%, compared to the group %Ret1 >= 25%. Better food tolerance, assessed by Suter questionnaire (SS > 24), was associated with lower %Ret1 (p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: There was an association between gastric pouch volume and emptying rate. Smaller gastric pouch have shown faster gastric emptying. The fastest gastric emptying was correlated with higher late %EWL, less weight regain and better PO food tolerance. These data suggest that the construction of small gastric pouch, with less than 40 mL, and with rapid emptying rate, are important parameters for good outcomes in late postoperative in GBP. The use of CT3D and scintigraphy for morphological and functional assessment of GBP can contribute in the evaluation of possible causes of late postoperative weight regain and food intolerance

Novas, Anabela M. P. C. "Tennis training, upper respiratory tract infections and salivary immunoglobulin A." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2003. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36789/1/36789_Digitised%20Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) are one of the most common illnesses affecting the general population and particularly athletes, often reducing the individual capacity of physical performance. Epidemiological data suggest that intensive exercise, training and competition may increase susceptibility to respiratory infections. On the other hand, some studies defend that less active subjects may reduce their risk of URTI by engaging in moderate exercise training. Nevertheless, reports are not unanimous and frequently contained various limitations. The higher incidence of infections in elite athletes has been widely attributed to immune suppression induced by exhaustive exercise, however this has not been clearly demonstrated. The present series of studies aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity and the incidence of URTI in young healthy females with a range of physical activity levels, from sedentary to elite athletes (tennis players). Additionally, it was intended to explore the temporal association between specific characteristics of tennis training and competition, the incidence of URTI, and salivary lgA levels (μg.mr1 ; μg.min-1 ) and changes, in elite female tennis players over a 12-week period. To accomplish the objectives described, a practical method for quantifying tennis play was validated and applied. Major findings of this research include the greater incidence of URTI symptomatology in girls with low or extremely high levels of physical activity as compared to those with moderate levels. Moreover, the incidence of URTI in elite tennis players was directly correlated with the training load and competition level, on a weekly basis. In the subsequent study, one hour of intense tennis play produced a significant drop in salivary lgA secretion rate (S-lgA), and the magnitude of the immune suppression was directly associated with the amount of training undertaken during the previous day and week (P<0.05). Nevertheless, tennis training did not seem to suppress chronically salivary lgA as positive correlations were found between resting salivary lgA levels of concentration and secretion rate, and the amount of training undertaken previously. Finally, it was noted a sharper post-exercise drop in S-lgA in occasions preceding an URTI episode compared to occasions when the infection did not develop subsequently (within 7 days). However, this parameter was not a specific predictor of URTI, in this cohort of athletes.

Abstract:
99
In recent years, maritime transport is developing rapidly, economic recovery, Taiwan high speed ships not much air traffic congestion, the Government encouraged the development of maritime traffic to drive the tourism boom. Benefits of high speed ship is fast, controls the flexibility, mobility, often use smaller for coastal and sea areas, in recent years are positive research and development in all countries, therefore very quickly for the development of high speed craft. High speed craft in military purposes is also very broad. Taiwan is surrounded by sea should develop high speed craft to be used as the transport, tourism, military and coastguard use along the coast. Optimized fuel speed refers to the use of the linear relationship between fuel consumption and speed to determine the best speed of the ship. Reasonable speed can reduce fuel consumption. Ship speed is directly related to fuel consumption, to be a comprehensive reflection of the economic and technical. Best ideal and frugal fuel oil optimized speed is related to wave-making resistance, the ship's voyage is most frugal fuel oil at a certain speed. It is mainly reason when sail at a certain speed wave-making resistance to a minimum. Ship shape with fouling of ship hulls related experiences associated are attached to ship resistance , so it must do maintenance of the hull when the dry docking. Speed optimization ( economical speed ) fuel consumption reduction, hull resistance is reduced, efficiency increase of the purpose, the main engine will not cause the overload, it is our desired purposes. Humans using a great quantity energy and therefore the energy are gradually depleted, so Ocean La La ship experiment to find out optimal fuel speeds to save fuel. International soaring raw materials costs increase, one litre of diesel oil will reach 30 nt, saving energy and carbon reduction is the responsibility of each of us. Therefore to Ocean LaLa carryed out the main engine computer controlled fuel injection and related perception ( such as oxygen sensor, intake air mass flow sensor ) study, as well as the actual test fuel optimization of navigation speed and Excel drawing to explore research and analysis.
