The aim of the study was to compare the heavy metal contamination and study the mineral content of Polish and Romanian honeys. We used Polish varietal honeys (n=18) produced in the year 2013-2014 in ecologically clean Podkarpackie region, and Romanian honeys (n=36) from Bihor district produced in 2013. The heavy metals concentration as well as mineral composition of honey was assayed by ICP-OES method with prior microwave mineralization. The cadmium and lead level in tested Polish honeys ranged from 0.007 to 0.021mg/kg and 0.02 to 0.098 mg/kg, respectively. Cadmium was not detected in Romanian

Honey is derived from plant nectar and pollen collected by bees. Honey contains natural sugars and nutrients but is prone to contamination by heavy metals such as mercury, copper, and cadmium from the environment. Honey quality standards stipulate maximum limits of contamination according to SNI 8664:2018. This study examined copper, mercury, and cadmium levels in native, cultivated, and branded honey using ICP-AES. Non-European food products often have many safety gaps. Among the various foods imported into Europe, honey, a natural product with important nutritional properties, is easily susceptible to contamination by inorganic elements. For this reason, the mineral profile of monofloral and multifloral honeys from different regions of North (provinces of Tiaret and Laghouat) and South Algeria (province of Tindouf) was monitored. In general, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cd, and Pb levels were found in almost all the samples, exceeding the limits set for honey by the Codex Alimentarius and European Regulation 915/2023. I

Agricultural contamination with pesticides and antibiotics is a challenging problem that needs to be fully addressed. Bee products, such as honey, are widely consumed as food and medicine and their contamination may carry serious health hazards. Honey and other bee products are polluted by pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria and radioactive materials. Pesticide residues cause genetic mutations and cellular degradation and presence of antibiotics might increase resistant human or animal's pathogens.
