Abstract:
The hippocampus in mammals is a morphologically well-defined structure, and so are its main subdivisions. To define the homologous structure in other vertebrate clades, using these morphological criteria has been difficult, if not impossible, since the typical mammalian morphology is absent. Although there seems to be consensus that the most medial part of the pallium represents the hippocampus in all vertebrates, there is no consensus on whether all mammalian hippocampal subdivisions are present in the derivatives of the medial pallium in all vertebrate groups. The aim of this paper is to explore the potential relevance of connections to define the hippocampus across vertebrates, with a focus on mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our work is divided into two parts composed each one from some studies belonging to the same domain. The first part contains two chapters where we discuss some purely metrical questions. The first one, + the architecture of Victor Hugo's contemplations : stanzas and metres ;, allows to identify the metrical and stanzaic arrangements used more frequently than others by the poet. The second chapter, + rhyme in the quatrains of the contemplations : gender and syllabic structure ;, presents the results of metrical, stanzaic and poetic ends study in terms of the relations between two kinds of alternations: feminine/masculine rhyme and closed/open rhyme. The second part, + ponctuometrie ; and + syntacticometrie ;, proposes several studies of the relations between metrical and linguistic arrangements. In this part, we examine some methods used to include semantic in metrics. Chapter one allows to identify, by a statistical analysis of the punctuation, the relations between metrical and stylistic forms in the dizains of Hugo's contemplations. In chapter II, our research concerns the sixains. It begins by the study of the punctuation and conduces to one kind of syntactic study of poetry for which we give the name of "syntacticometrie". This technique constitutes an essay of integration of generative grammar in poetic studies. It is presented with more details in the last chapter where we analyze the internal metrics of all the 5702 alexandrines obeying to the (aa) rhyme-scheme in victor hugo's contemplations. The explanation of the "syntacticometrie" allows us to present several methods concerning the study of the tension between metre and syntax: global profile, parallelism, divergence, variance, fluctuation, intensity of variation, and force of syntactic limits

Abstract:
Our study consists in defining V. Hugo's technique of the verse, through the examples in his "Contemplations". In order to do this, we should also take into account his theoretic position in that field. As a matter of fact, Hugo, opposing the classic conception of the versification, insists that the verse ought to give proof of a certain order in the variety of the forms, and that on should forego doing the simply regular verses. So as to examine if there was in Hugo a real technical innovation, we have analyzed the rhyme and the structure of the verse. In reality, his practice is at one time traditional, at another time more personal, both in the rhyme and in the structure of the verse. Therefore, he doesn't renounce the classic verse as far as he had pretended. What made original Hugo’s versification is the rhythmic complexity, caused either by the frequent use of trimeters, or by a lot of rhythmic processes of discordances

Abstract:
This thesis presents an edition of Contemplations of the Dread and Love of God, a late Middle English devotional prose text for which no critical edition is currently available. I have transcribed and collated the text from all sixteen extant manuscripts and the 1506 printed edition. An investigation of the errors and variants according to the classical method of textual criticism has yielded little in the way of conclusive results, and it has therefore not proved possible to construct a stemma of manuscripts from the corpus of evidence as it now exists. My edition therefore uses one manuscript (Maidstone MS Museum 6) as a base; I emend the text of Maidstone where necessary, and cite variants from all the other witnesses to show all differences of substance. A full critical apparatus is provided, comprising: the text with variants, textual notes and glossary. The introduction includes a full description of all the manuscripts and the two early printed editions, an outline of the methods of textual criticism applied and their results, and an explanation of the choice of base manuscript; information about the language of the Maidstone manuscript and the date of the text are also provided, as is an outline of my editorial principles. The thesis also contains two appendices. The first of these deals briefly with the twenty-two instances where individual chapters of Contemplations appear in other manuscript compilations; the second discusses the English and Latin prayers which follow the full text in some manuscripts.

Abstract:
Chemin faisant, nous mettons à l'épreuve la théorie sémiotique et sa valeur heuristique<br>With the semiotics theory of the Ecole de Paris as the framework for discussions, we envisage studying Les Contemplations by Victor Hugo. The first two parts of this thesis cover the semiotics of passions and the third part covers what we call the concept of semio-pragmatics. More specifically, the first two parts focus on the establishment of passionate forms - in particular hope and despair. After having considered the definitions given in the dictionary and the thoughts of philosophers on this subject, we shall analyze the personal forms as revealed in Les Contemplations, that is, we shall attempt to describe the passion sememes of hope and despair by going beyond the impersonal dimension which is independent of speech, and also going beyond the analysis of the definitions of lexemes. The third part focuses on the sharing of passion forms with readers of this collection of poems. We shall also look at all the strategies of making one believe and feel both at the macrostructure and microstructure levels. As our discussion goes further, we shall prove the semiotic theory and its historical value

Abstract:
This thesis explores how food communicates. In particular, it considers the historical context from which the gourmet rises and how "good taste" is communicated through the history of the gourmet. This finds particular expression in mass mediated society, specifically print culture, and reaches its apex in Gourmet: The magazine of good living. By disciplining base instincts such as civilizing the appetite, making distinctions from the masses, the everyday and the ordinary, "good taste" is standardized through the palate and acts as an index of the aesthetic quality of bourgeois sensibility. Gastronomic history, notions of restraint and delicacy from the French courts, and the development of the modern restaurant, are food for thought in the examination of contemporary associations between "good taste" and "good living." The discourse surrounding the cultivation of the self through eating, manners, food and lifestyle figures predominantly.

Godfrey, Laura. "Contemplations of connection through the notion of boundaries : installations and ideas of paradox." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1272765.

Full text
Abstract:
We are accustomed to meanings, signs, language, and the constraints, categories, and concepts which make-up what I acknowledge as boundaries. These are integral for interaction with people, with other forms of life, with landscapes, and with ourselves. Without boundaries there would not be progression or understanding with that which is "the other."Boundaries are categorized into four areas within these creative projects. They are environment, language, states of being, and destination. Within the categories various projects explore what create intangible separations which denote the boundary and create a visible representation of each.Within each category projects are organized by content, objective, and outcome. Some results proved to be more successful than others by effectively conveying meaning through the various imagery and objects of the installations. Often, a viewer's preference f one project over another was due to the use of a specific medium, building method, and overall design rather than the concept or idea which inspired it.The paradoxical notion of these explorations is due to the exemplification of the connections surrounding and, perhaps, instigating each boundary. Attempts to visibly explore boundaries through their connections provide glimpses of built separation markers (environment), words and phrases which may separate or connect (language), alterations of physicality (states of being), and the ambiguous quality which denotes a place (destination) such that each becomes discernable but, more importantly, that each may be surpassed. It is through the visibility of the categories and understanding of their connections in which the boundaries go beyond manifesting themselves through the viewers' collective questioning the possibilities.<br>Department of Art

Abstract:
"In psychological science, the concept of contemplation is not included in the most important categories of psychology, such as activity, consciousness, personality. The dictionary meanings of the term “contemplation” are ambiguous. In psychology, in addition to the categorical analysis of contemplation (S.L. Rubinstein) and its attribution to fundamental concepts (A.V. Brushlinsky), there are also interpretations of contemplation, which are synonymous to intuition (A. Bergson) and meditation (V.F. Petrenko, Han F. De Wit), insight (preconceptual thinking - T.K. Rulina), mystical states (W. James, P.S. Gurevich). Contemplation, unlike intuition, meditation and insight, does not have a previous reportable history. In our studies, contemplation is considered as an unconscious mental phenomenon that exists in the forms of a process, state, and also the properties of an individual (contemplative personality). Not coinciding with the processes of attention, memory, perception, thinking, etc., contemplation, however, is activated on their basis. The difference lies in the uncontrollability of this process, since its contents are not presented to consciousness. Therefore, contemplation is also different from dreams, experiences, intentions and other internally substantive mental phenomena. Despite the fact that consciousness does not have access to the content of contemplation (access-consciousness), the process itself is realized by man. In this we see the difference between contemplation as unconscious activity and Freudian understanding of the unconscious. Other differences are: involuntary entry and random exit from the state of contemplation; emotional equipotentiality of contemplation, i.e. the invariability of the emotional background of contemplation from the beginning to the exit from it. In ontogenesis, contemplation is most clearly represented in infancy, in youth, and in old age, as well as during periods of age and other life crises. Reminiscences of students record the age range from 11 to 17 years as the most saturated with contemplation; least at the age of 6-8 years (L.S. Akopian). Contemplation as an unconscious activity periodically replaces purposeful activity, contributing to the maturation, correction, transformation of the person’s life meanings in their micro-, meso- and macro-macro dimensions. Contemplation also fulfills the function of partially liberating oneself from an excess of affairs, concerns, plans, aspirations, and other forms of conscious activity. The development of practice-oriented forms of actualization of contemplation will expand the range of psychotherapeutic methods."
