Abstract:
LANGSCAPE is a Cambridge University Press project associated with both ‘English Today’ and a new international usage guide for the year 2000 by Pam Peters, author of the ‘Cambridge Australian English Style Guide’ (1995). Like the Australian publication, the international work will be distinctive in its use of empirical evidence from computer corpora as well as data elicited from surveys of users of English round the world. Because English is a world language, any account of usage that is limited to one person's views and resources is inadequate.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTSome observations on what words associated with Islam are in, and what might yet go into, current ELT dictionaries. Muslims constitute a vast number of speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL) and a Foreign Language (EFL). As a consequence, many expressions associated with Islam have been introduced into contemporary English and its dictionaries – both general and ESL/EFL. The present paper focuses on three particular works: the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE, 2003), the Macmillan English Dictionary (MED, 2002) and The New Oxford Dictionary of English (NODE, 1998), in order to discuss how Islamic terms are being used. It was found that few phrases or sentences are provided to illustrate such terms – even those in common use among English-speaking Muslims. The present paper therefore (1) suggests sample sentences for these terms, so that users of such dictionaries can set them in context, and (2) offers a list of common Islamic words for possible inclusion in future editions.

This paper provides a survey of contemporary usage of American English by describing and illustrating linguistic features documented for social and regional groups in the United States. The focus on variation in pronunciation, grammar, and meaning in American English highlights the diversity of dialects and styles in the U.S. as well as the centrality of sociocultural identities to language use. We group examples of variation according to the social and geographical factors that these features have been associated with in the literature: region, age, ethnicity, and gender. We note though that patterns of linguistic usage differ both within and across communities, with particular features used by diff erent social groups for shifting purposes. The examples here provide a snapshot of the kinds of variation observed in contemporary American English as we move into the 21st century.</p>

Dave, Paul. "Representation of class in contemporary English cinema." Thesis, University of East London, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532539.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the representation of class in English film culture which focuses primarily on films and written texts produced between 1978 and 2002. My approach to these representations takes the work of Ellen Meiksins Wood on the theoretical principles of historical materialism as its most general methodological guide. Thus, I seek to place representations of class within a conceptual framework which, like the one found in Wood's work, puts emphasis on approaching class as a relational and conflictual social phenomenon lying at the heart of capitalist society. Such a move involves establishing a dual-focus on both images of class and capitalism. Consequently I seek to embed my examples of the representation of class within a characterisation of the contemporary moment of capitalism as a specifically neo-liberal one. Related to this joining of the perspectives of class and capitalism is my attempt to explore, in the context of contemporary film and film criticism, Wood's historical thesis that Englishness forms the `pristine culture of capitalism'. Her idea that cultures of Englishness exaggerate class understood as an identity, and at the same time conceal its dynamic role as an antagonistic relationship central to capitalism, has determined my focus on an English rather than a wider, British cinema. The material for study has been drawn from diverse areas - examples of mainstream and experimental film are discussed here, as are different forms of criticism and literature. However, the intention is not to provide a systematic overview of national film production or patterns of criticism during this period, but rather to generate distinctive readings of films and critical texts from the particular historical materialist conceptualisation of class, capitalism and English referred to above.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine four teachers’ of English perceptions of the use of CPCE in their teaching. When reading the control documents of the Swedish school, indications pointing towards the use of CPCE texts in teaching were found. Therefore we took an interest in finding out how teachers choose to implement CPCE in their teaching. We have combined the methods of semi structured qualitative interviews and the use of a focus group to gather the data needed. Our main findings consist of how the concept of popular culture is understood by our informants. They find the concept vast as it entails such a broad variety of texts such as TV shows, film, the Internet, magazines and literature. Teachers select appropriate CPCE materials with regards to their pupils’ preferences. However, our findings of how these materials are implemented in their teaching of English vary and are to be considered limited.

Graham-Bertolini, Alison. "Home of the Brave: Vigilante Women in Contemporary American Fiction." LSU, 2009. http://etd.lsu.edu/docs/available/etd-04142009-191748/.

Full text
Abstract:
Vigilante literature tells the stories of individuals who rectify injustice by taking matters into their own hands. Examples of this plot can be found in American literature dating from colonial times, when settlers made an effort to preserve their moral code without the aid of an established justice system. The popularity of this theme finds further currency in tales of the frontier and the Wild West, and more recently, Hollywood has capitalized on its popularity by drawing from the myth of American pioneer culture and the theme of the lone avenger. This project identifies an analogous theme in contemporary fiction by women writers, who in the twentieth century began frequently employing female avatars of vigilante justice to challenge (in an illegal or extralegal fashion) those who violate the economic, social, or political rights of women. This dissertation analyzes a collection of novels and short stories by contemporary American women who employ the avatar of the vigilante woman, and demonstrates how female avengers, warriors, bandits, and killers extend and amend the vigilante tradition in the United States.
