Abstract:
Ubiquitous mobile devices have become a necessity in today’s society, opening new opportunities for interaction and collaboration between geographically distributed people. With the increased use of mobile phones, people can collaborate while on the move. Collaborators expect technologies that would enhance their teamwork and respond to their individual needs. Workflow is a widely used technology that supports collaboration and can be adapted for a variety of collaborative scenarios. Although the originally computer-based workflow technology has expanded also on mobile devices, there are still research challenges in the development of user-focused device-oriented collaborative workflows. As opposed to desktop computers, mobile devices provide a different, more personalised user experience and are carried by their owners everywhere. Mobile devices can capture user context and behave as digitalised user complements. By integrating context awareness into the workflow technology, workflow decisions can be based on local, context information and therefore, be more adapted to individual collaborators’ circumstances and expectations. Knowing the current context of collaborators and their mobile devices is useful, especially in mobile peer-topeer collaboration where the workflow process execution can be driven by devices according to the situation. In mobile collaboration, team workers share pictures, videos, or other content. Monitoring and exchanging the information on the current state of the content processed on devices can enhance the overall workflow execution. As mobile devices in peer-to-peer collaboration are not aware of a global workflow state, the content state information can be used to communicate progress among collaborators. However, there is still a lack of integrating content lifecycles in process-oriented workflows. The aim of this research was therefore to investigate how workflow technology can be adapted for mobile peer-to-peer collaboration, in particular, how the level of context awareness in mobile collaborative workflows can be increased and how the extra content lifecycle management support can be integrated. The collaborative workflow technology has been adapted for mobile peerto- peer collaboration by integrating context and content awareness. In the first place, a workflow-specific context management approach has been developed that allows defining workflow-specific context models and supports the integration of context models with collaborative workflows. Workflow process has been adapted to make decisions based on context information. Secondly, extra content management support has been added to the workflow technology. A representation for content lifecycles has been designed, and content lifecycles have been integrated with the workflow process. In this thesis, the MobWEL workflow approach is introduced. The Mob- WEL workflow approach allows defining, managing and executing mobile context-aware content-centric workflows. MobWEL is a workflow execution language that extends BPEL, using constructs from existing workflow approaches, Context4BPEL and BPELlight, and adopting elements from the BALSA workflow model. The MobWEL workflow management approach is a technology-based solution that has been designed to provide workflow management support to a specific class of mobile applications.

Abstract:

A major component of the highly lucrative sports business is the content delivery value chain consisting of a number of players including the content creators - sports leagues; content aggregators - TV networks; content distributors - pay TV providers; advertisers - one of the main financiers in the value chain; and consumers. The relationships between the value chain players have been both cooperative and competitive, especially when the borders separating them became less defined due to backward and forward integration efforts of players. With the advancements in Internet content delivery and electronic devices, a new form of sports content consumption has emerged that has the potential to re-define the borders between the value chain players and to disrupt the industry. This new form of sports content consumption is Sports over IP (SpoIP, sports content consumption over the Internet). This thesis lays out four different scenarios about how the SpoIP disruption could play out in the value chain. It uses information from similar disruption in other industries and system dynamics modeling to present the ramification and likelihood of each scenario. This work predicts that the consumers will be the winner of SpoIP disruption because they will have access to good quality and cheaper sports content going forward.

Abstract:
As the web continues to evolve, so does our need for achieving an accessible web for people with disabilities. Content management systems (CMSs) have well observed accessibility problems with generated content, and in recent years, several features have been proposed in order to minimize or eliminate these problems. This study investigated CMSs in current use to find common accessibility problems and evaluated a set of features proposed by Acosta, T. et al. in 2018, targeting these problems. The study initially found a general lack of information, guidance and technical support provided by CMSs to editors promoting the generation of accessible content. The results indicate that even editors highly aware of accessibility may not be able to create accessible content due to the limitations of their systems. The study also received positive feedback towards the evaluated features from professionals, indicating that the features are of practical value and may help the editor by minimizing or eliminating common accessibility problems in content generated through CMSs.

Abstract:
Content Management Systems (CMS) generally store data in a way that the content is distributed among several relational database tables or stored in files as a whole without any distinctive characteristics. These storage mechanisms cannot provide the management of semantic information about the data. They lack semantic retrieval, search and browsing of the stored content. To enhance non-semantic CMSes with advanced semantic features, the semantics within the CMS itself and additional semantic information related with the actual managed content should also be taken into account. However, extracting implicit knowledge from the legacy CMSes, lifting to a semantic content management system environment and providing semantic operations on the content is a challenging task which includes adoption of several latest advancements in information extraction (IE), information retrieval (IR) and Semantic Web areas. In this study, we propose an integrative approach including automatic lifting of content from legacy systems, automatic annotation of data with the information retrieved from the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud and several semantic operations on the content in terms of storage and search. We use a simple RDF path language to create custom, semantic indexes and filter annotations obtained from LOD cloud in a way that is eligible for specific use cases. Filtered annotations are materialized along with the actual content of document in dedicated indexes. This semantix indexing infrastructure allows semantically meaningful search facilities on top of it. We realize our approach in the scope of Apache Stanbol project, which is a subproject developed in the scope of IKS project, by focusing on document storage and retrival parts of it. We evaluate our approach in healthcare domain with different domain ontologies (SNOMED/CT, ART, RXNORM) in addition to DBpedia as parts of LOD cloud which are used annotate documents and content obtained from different health portals.

Crk, Igor. "Context-Aware Resource Management." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195573.

Full text
Abstract:
The demand for performance and resources that is placed on the system is dictated by the application alone in non-interactive environments, and by a combination of application and user interactions in interactive environments. Understanding user interaction can provide valuable information about which resources will be needed ahead of time. This leads to performance optimizations such as better resource allocations for applications that can utilize a given resource more productively, and transitioning devices to a more appropriate energy performance state before the demand arrives. The challenge is to provide a performance/energy schedule that best matches the task at hand, since keeping the device in one performance level is not energy efficient due to the continually changing demand placed on the device. This dissertation addresses the challenge of designing energy efficient systems by examining the role of user interaction in energy consumption and in providing an energy-performance schedule that adequately accommodates user demand. It is shown that system performance can be tailored to a user's pattern of interaction and it's energy-performance schedule optimized.First, a detailed design of context capture systems in Linux's X-Window System is presented with an evaluation of the associated storage and computation overheads. Due to the overall low complexity of the application window representations, the overheads of computing interaction identifiers and storing a secondary representation of the application interface within the context capture system are likewise low. Additionally, a Microsoft Windows-based context capture system leveraging the Active Accessibility framework is discussed and applied to improving the navigation of cascading pull-down menus.Secondly, this dissertation addresses the application of interaction capture in energy and delay management of Wireless Network Interface Controllers/Cards (WNICs) and hard drives. The Interaction Aware Prediction (IAP) system for WNICs is evaluated showing that the available power modes can be effectively managed to provide energy efficiency while maintaining performance. Similarly, the Interaction Aware Spin-up Prediction (IASP) uses interaction awareness to reduce or eliminate the interactive delays associated with aggressive hard disk energy management.

Abstract:

Today, most companies and organizations have some kind of intranet solution. These system solutions vary and tend to be either more or less sophisticated, but the overall purpose remains the same; distributing the organizations information to its members.

This essay is about intranet-development, and mainly devoted to explore a concept which has grown rapidly in recent years; Content Management System (CMS). I’m particular focusing on how to choose a suitable Open Source CMS, for implementation in a small organizations intranet.

The essay is the result of vast literature studies, mainly based on scientific articles from leading experts within their field. In addition I have also carried out a survey in a company intranet, in order to investigate the users’ attitude towards their CMS-intranet.

One of the most important results of the essay is my model of a modularized CMS-intranet, partially based on Knowledge Management-theory and the importance of appropriate references in order to interpret our surroundings, and logical categorization of information.

The emergence of the BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China as a formidable economic powerhouse is turning into a reality. The center of the world's economic gravity is slowly shifting towards these emerging economies. As per research performed by Goldman Sacs' the BRIC economies could become the four most dominant economies by 2050. As per their study China and India would become the dominant supplier of manufactured goods and services while Brazil and Russia would dominate in supply of raw materials. The BRIC economy today makes up about 25% of the land mass and has 40% of the world's population. As multinationals scramble to tap into these growing emerging markets, they have begun to acknowledge that supply chain management is an essential ingredient of a successful business strategy. Success stories of Wal-Mart, Dell and Toyota have brought in the realization that to compete and win in the market place a winning supply chain strategy is a must. This has resulted in corporations trying to benchmark their supply chain strategies against this best in class strategies. However, this kind of comparison does not always work since there are a multitude of differences between companies, industries and countries. The existing practice of developing products and services for the developed economy and then tailoring these products for other economies around the world will not suffice anymore. Companies must now learn how to develop products for countries like India, sometimes from scratch and then tailor them for other geographies. To compete in this space of rapid economic growth firms need to analyze, design and optimize their product portfolio for emerging markets. To develop these "no frills" products for emerging economies, the supply chain designed for developed countries isn't adequate to meet the unique challenges of an emerging economy with its underdeveloped infrastructure, technology and human capital resources. To be competitive corporations should re-evaluate their supply chain strategies to customize it for emerging market conditions and in many cases build it from scratch. This thesis examines the unique characteristics of supply chain by studying successful supply chain strategies employed by Indian firms and proposes frameworks and strategies to help companies innovate in their supply chain design. This thesis develops a generic framework to design effective supply chains for emerging economies by looking at five key elements or "Five Pillars" of supply chain. The five key elements were thoroughly evaluated to understand the key challenges in each pillar and develop effective "Customized Practices" in the context of an emerging economy. The five pillars which were evaluated were Demand and Supply Planning, Sourcing and Procurement, Operations, Transportation, Warehousing and distribution. The framework takes a holistic approach by aligning business strategies with operating principles to develop the customized practices. The framework was then validated by performing a deep dive analysis of the successful supply chain case of the Tata Nano small car. Analyzing the Tata Nano supply chain through the lens of this framework provided key insights into the supply chain challenges faced by firms operating in an emerging economy and the unique customized practices used by these firms to operate efficiently. Use of this framework will bring awareness of the supply chain challenges in emerging economies and the customized practices firms use to help guide organizations in designing and operating their supply chains.

Johal, Muhammad. "Content-aware radio resource management for IMT-advanced systems." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/90149/.

Full text
Abstract:
Radio Resource Management (RRM) is crucial to efficiently and correctly manage the delivery of quality-of-service (QoS) in IMT-Advanced systems. Various methods on radio resource management for LTE/LTE-Advanced traffic have been studied by researchers especially regarding QoS handling of video packet transmissions. Usually, cross-layer optimisation (CLO) involving the PHY and MAC layers, has been used to provide proper resource allocation and distribution to the entire system. Further initiatives to include the APP layer as part of CLO techniques have gained considerable attention by researchers. However, some of these methods did not adequately consider the level of compatibility with legacy systems and standards. Furthermore, the methods did not wholly address User Equipment (UE) mobility or performance metrics for a specific data type or a specified period. Consequently, in this thesis, a content-aware radio RRM model employing a cross-layer optimiser focusing on a video conferencing/streaming application for a single cell long-term evolution (LTE) system has been proposed. Based on two constructed look-up tables, the cross-layer optimiser was found to dynamically adjust the transmitted video data rates depending on the UE or eNodeB SINR performance. The proposed look-up tables were derived from the performance study of the LTE classical (baseline) simulation model for various distances at a certain UE velocity. Two performance parameters, namely the average throughput and measured SINR were matched together to find the most suitable data rates for video delivery in both the uplink and downlink transmissions. The developed content-aware RRM model was then tested against the LTE baseline simulation model, to benchmark its capability to be used as an alternative to existing RRM methods in the present LTE system. Based on the detailed simulations, the output performance demonstrated that for video packet delivery in both uplink and downlink transmissions, the content-aware RRM model vastly outperformed the legacy LTE baseline simulation model with regard to the packet loss ratio and average end-to-end delay for the same amount of throughput. The baseline simulation model and the newly developed cross-layer approach were investigated and compared with practical measurement results in which PodNode technology, besides other components and supporting simulation software, were used to emulate the LTE communication system. The first emulation experiment involving the baseline model was generally in sync with the uplink throughput simulation performance. The second test which implemented the cross-layer approach employing the look-up table derived from the previous emulated results, confirmed the viability of the proposed content-aware RRM model to be used in current LTE or LTE-Advanced systems for improving the performance in the packet loss ratio and average packet delay.

Abstract:
Content Management Systems (CMS) can support the creation and maintenance of an e-commerce website and its content. Together with the advance of mobile technology and Internet, it is now possible for business owners to manage their online store using their mobile touchscreen devices. This thesis aims to define the usability problems of the existing CMSs when they are used on mobile touchscreen devices. Heuristic evaluation was performed in three CMSs in order to gain a better understanding of how CMS on touchscreen works and what are the major issues that could downgrade usability. Based on the results of the evaluation, a prototype was implemented and evaluated in order to find out if the design characteristics of the prototype can enhance usability. The impact of the prototype is discussed in terms of efficiency and heuristics violations. Moreover, design guidelines are suggested and uncovered usability problems for further research are provided.

Abstract:
The inspirations for this study were a call for research into the evolution of management accounting in the context of knowledge management (Bhimani and Roberts, 2004) and the increasing interest of Thai public and private organisations in implementing knowledge management initiatives, which were encouraged by the Thai government in order to move Thailand towards becoming a knowledge economy. The aim of this research is to extend the current knowledge and understanding of the adoption and evolution of management control systems (MCS) in the context of knowledge management. The study provides insights into whether and to what extent an MCS can be used to promote knowledge management. This includes an investigation of the mechanisms ofMCS that can be used to encourage knowledge management in organisations. It also involves defining what is meant by the terms knowledge and knowledge management, as these terms are broadly and differently defined in the literature of the various relevant disciplines. Two case studies of Thai organisations were used to explore the implications of MCS for knowledge management The cases provided contextual insights into the practicalities of knowledge management and MCS in the context of knowledge management The cases are in different businesses (one financially-oriented and the other non-financially-oriented) and different organisational contexts (one a bureaucratic organisation and the other a professionally dominated organisation). The differences in business purposes and organisational settings provide detailed data on how MCS can be devdoped to support knowledge management in different contexts. The findings suggest that the two organisations used the behaviouml mechanisms of MCS to promote their knowledge management initiatives in order to accomplish two aims: developing human capital and structural capital Several people-based knowledge management methods (e.g. education and training, communities of practice- (CoPs), etc.) were developed to achieve these aims. Three behvioural mechanisms of MCS (ie. individual performance measures, incentive systems and organisational rules) were used to encourage employees to participate in knowledge management work. MCS for knowledge management in the bank (a bureaucmtic and financially-oriented organisation) is more problematic than in the university partly because the bank's MCS is financially-oriented and more hierarchical than the university's, which is knowledge-oriented and more horizontal. The study also illustrates the use of personnel and cultural controls for promoting knowledge management in the two organisations. Finally, a conceptual framework, for explaining the synergy of MCS and knowledge management, is proposed for further development The framework suggests that the role of MCS in the context of knowledge has two dimensions: promoting horizontal co-ordination (by connecting economic activities horizontally) and encouraging HRM practices.

Abstract:
The demand for Internet-based visual content delivery has increased significantly in recent years, triggered mainly by the widespread use of Internet enabled smartphones and portable devices, and by the availability of super HD content. As a consequence, live and on-demand video content has become the most important source of network traffic in mobile and fixed networks alike. In order to be able to efficiently deliver the increasing amount of video traffic, network operators have started to deploy caches and operator-owned CDNs. These solutions do not only reduce the amount of transit traffic of the operators but they may also improve the customers' quality of experience, through bringing the video content closer to customers. Nevertheless, their efficiency is determined by the algorithms and protocols used to allocate resources, both in terms of storage and bandwidth. The work in this thesis addresses the allocation of these two resources for operator-owned content management systems. In the first part of the thesis we consider a cache maintained by a single network operator. We investigate how caching at a network operator affects the content distribution system as a whole, and consequently, the efficiency of content delivery. We propose a model of the decision process undertaken by a network operator that aims at optimizing the efficiency of a cache by actively managing its bandwidth. We design different algorithms that aim at approximating the optimal cache bandwidth allocation and we evaluate them through extensive simulations and experiments. We show that active cache bandwidth allocation can significantly increase traffic savings. We then consider the potential interaction among caches maintained by different network operators. We consider the problem of selfish replication on a graph as a modelof network operators that individually deploy replication systems, and try to leverage their peering agreements so as to minimize the traffic through their transit providers. We use game-theoretical tools to investigate the existence of stable and efficient allocations of content at the network operators. We show that selfish myopic updates of content allocations at different network operators lead the system to a stable state, and that the convergence speed depends on the underlying network topology. In addition, we show that interacting operator-owned caches can reach a stable content allocation without coordination, but coordination leads to more cost efficient content allocations.

Abstract:
Although cloud computing is the major hype nowadays, it is actually a relatively “old” concept which can be dated back to the 1950s. Then, AT&T was developing a centralized infrastructure and storage space, where their customers could connect to using advanced telephones. Cloud computing works in a similar fashion, where customers subscribe to centralized service models. The models are separated in three main categories; Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). The cloud is a multi-tenant environment, i.e., several customers are able to use the same service simultaneously. More- over, the cloud is highly scalable, which means that resources can be allocated on demand. Cloud computing follows a pay-per-use payment model. Customers could reduce their operational and maintenance costs significantly, because they subscribe to a Cloud Service Provider (CSP) which is responsible for these tasks. Moreover, an organization is no longer dependent on costly upfront investments. Most of the industry-leading technology organizations (e.g., Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft) have their own cloud services. Thus, the barrier to adopt the cloud for customers has lowered. Organizations have hasted to move their services to the cloud, without questioning the cloud’s maturity. Even though cloud security has been a priority from the beginning, numerous attacks have been reported. The CSP’s data-centers provide both physical and infrastructure security. However, traditional security threats to IT systems, is still applicable to cloud applications. Furthermore, new cloud-specific security risks emerge. Confidentiality, integrity and availability of data are always of importance, however, becomes challenging in the cloud due to its dynamic environment. Ensuring integrity of data, with- out knowing the whole data set, is one of several challenges. Moreover, due to the increasing incidents of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, availability of data has become problematic. Although the cloud is able to scale well with such attacks, disruptions of services still occur. The scalability of clouds could also potentially be a threat, if malicious users are able to create bot-nets of multiple clouds. The Internet is a hostile environment, likewise is the cloud. However, this does not stop people from rapidly adopting it. Organizations have hasted to offer their services on the cloud, to benefit from its advantages. Content Management Sys- tems (CMSs) are examples of such services. They are widely popular, and used to create professional websites without requiring technical skills. CMSs provides a user-friendly platform to manage the contents (e.g., text, pictures, music), then customize it with templates and extensions. Open source CMSs benefit from their communities of developers, which contribute to keep their systems up to date and safe, with the current technologies. Since many CMS have non-technical users, they tend to be attractive targets for adversaries. Especially, third-party exten- sions have been considered a major threat. The “core” of the systems are often secure. However, web application vulnerabilities apply to these systems.Joomla! is a widely popular open source CMS, due to its simplicity and remark- able community. The latest version (Joomla! 1.6) has made it suitable for both new unexperienced users, as well as professional users. Joomla! can be used as a PaaS, to benefit from the cloud’s advantages. Anyhow, Joomla! is an attractive target, due to its non-technical audience. It is considered secure by default. How- ever, with simple open source tools, it is possible to obtain valuable information about the system, e.g., server spesifications, OS, CMS version. Moreover, the se- curity of the back-end have potential for improvements. Since many customers use weak passwords, and the back-end is always located in the same folder, adversaries could brute-force their way through. Many CMSs have static files and resources, which finger-printers utilize to determine the system specifications. Furthermore, poorly coded extensions are gateways for attackers. If an exploit is found in a com- ponent, adversaries could automate attacks against websites with this vulnerable component installed. Hence, it is critical for users to always keep up to date. The emerging future would introduce numerous new ways of cloud usage. Many companies invest in enormous data-centers, which is the size of small villages. More and more services would move to the cloud, and software licenses would start to be excess. The threats to the cloud are not significantly increased in numbers, compared to traditional IT systems. However, the multi-tenancy could be exploited by malicious users. Moreover, distributed attacks originating from several clouds, could force CSPs to evolve cloud security.

Abstract:
Web site usability is an important factor when creating and managing web sites, since it essentially determines whether or not the site is usable by its intended audience. As an attempt to simplify the process of achieving high usability for web sites, this thesis has explored the possibility of integrating usability guidelines with web content management systems. The overall aim was to determine if, and how, usability guidelines can be implemented in a web content management system to make it promote and deliver web site usability, and to find solutions that aid web site users in carrying out the basic tasks of finding, reading and understanding information on the web. To estimate the effectiveness of such solutions, the level of human dependency was considered when evaluating the solutions. This thesis has shown that it is possible to construct such solutions, and has found several for each of the basic user tasks of finding, reading and understanding information. Although some of the found solutions automatically improve a site's usability or actively promote site usability, the majority are still dependent on human efforts in order to promote usability. It was concluded that it is possible to integrate usability guidelines with a web content management system, but that web site usability still largely depends on human effort in order to be effective.

In an online community of any size, every user garners reputations for different contexts through interactions with other users. When any user in the online community is interested in a certain context, the user would value the opinions of those users of high repute with respect to that context. However, if the online community is of any significant size, a user might not know every other user in the community. Therefore, a reputation brokering mechanism needs to be incorporated so that an interested user would be able to trace paths through other users to the reputable users. From social network theories, there exist centrality measures that can be used to determine the reputation of users in a network based on the number of in-degrees and out-degrees. However, different users in the network can have varying tastes and opinions with respect to a given context. Since centrality measures determine the reputation of users based on aggregate opinion, a user who has different tastes from the majority of the other users might not agree with the reputable users selected by the centrality measures. This justifies the need for developing personalized rating systems that are able to personalize for any user a selection of other users that he would regard as highly reputable. In this thesis, two such rating systems are developed and compared against the existing centrality measures. When tested over various dimensions such as network size and network connectivity, there is evidence that the personalized rating systems perform better than the traditional measures of reputation in the selection of reputable individuals.

The Hospital to Home architecture aims to provide a successful transition for patients leaving the hospital in order to improve health outcomes and minimize hospital readmission. This thesis analyzes the current hospital to home system, explores its flows and proposes a better architecture to improve the patient transition from the hospital to home. It makes a significant contribution by proposing a new architecture based on a patient-centric approach within the framework of the Hospital to Home (H2H) initiative called Caregiver Coordination. In this architecture, we propose the creation of a web and mobile based application that allows patients and caregivers to interact easily with each other to help manage the patient's wellbeing. We include a short summary illustrating how this new architecture can address the two main problems: (1) the decentralization of the discharge plan and (2) the dependency on the interactions among diverse stakeholders. We propose to: 1. Analyze and critique the existing hospital to home architecture 2. Follow an existing architecture pattern/framework 3. Recommend a new architecture 4. Create a Caregiver Coordination application using an open source framework to enable a successful transition of patients from hospital to home

Abstract:
Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is a relatively new research area, which still lacks research (Alalwan & Weistroffer, 2012). There is an expressed need to know how ECM systems can be implemented effectively in organisations, and this has formulated the research question: “Which success factors can be found when implementing Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems?”. By analysing previously published literature, to identify and compile the success factors that can be found in connection with implementation of ECM systems within organisations, a qualitative research method is used. In the analysis section two tables of identified success factors are presented. These have been divided in two categories, organizational and technological success factors, which can result in a successful implementation of an ECM system. Lastly, a discussion reflects upon the findings, on the implications this study brings into light and where future research is still needed.

Bera, Palash. "Using ontologies in the context of knowledge management systems." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31256.

Full text
Abstract:
Knowledge management systems (KMS) are information systems that combine and integrate functions for managing knowledge in organizations. Although substantial interest exists in KMS, a theoretically-based view of knowledge in the KMS context is not yet available. To clarify the notion of knowledge as managed by KMS, a conceptual framework is developed. The key concepts of this framework are derived by combining an action-based perspective with an artificial intelligence (AI) view of knowledge. The relationships among these concepts are identified, anchored to current literature, and represented graphically as conceptual models. Conceptual models are used to support the understanding of and communicating about application domains. The models contribute in proposing several theoretical and practical implications regarding KMS. To use KMS effectively, knowledge seekers need to be able to identify the knowledge required to perform their tasks. It is suggested that providing knowledge seekers with a visual representation of a formal ontology can facilitate performing knowledge identification. Formal sets of statements defining the relevant concepts and their relationships are called formal ontologies. Formal ontologies are often specified in ontological languages such as Web Ontology Language (OWL). The main requirements from such languages are that they have well-formalized syntax and that they will be computer-readable. However, not much attention has been paid to how they can be used to convey domain semantics. It is suggested that the use of philosophically-based ontological principles can help generate guidelines for developing conceptual models using OWL. Accordingly, a set of guidelines is proposed and it is demonstrated that application of such guidelines can provide clearer representation of domain phenomena such as interaction. Ontologies developed with these guidelines for modeling interaction are termed informed ontologies. From the developed conceptual models for KMS, it is identified that knowledge is intimately tied to the change of state of an entity. This change of state is facilitated by entities participating in interactions. Thus, it is proposed that the use of informed ontologies will lead to better knowledge identification than the use of uninformed ontologies. In a laboratory study, using business students as subjects, it was found that the use of informed ontologies for knowledge identification was advantageous.

Abstract:

Content Management Systemer (CMS) tas i bruk i stadig flere bedrifter. Bred funksjonalitet støtter opp under stadig flere prosesser.

Abstract:
In order to manage the content of multimedia data, the content must be annotated. Although any user-defined annotation is acceptable, it is preferable if systems agree on the same annotation format. MPEG-7 is a widely accepted standard for multimedia content annotation. However, in MPEG-7, semantically identical metadata can be represented in multiple ways due to lack of precise semantics in its XML-based syntax. Unfortunately this prevents metadata interoperability. To overcome this problem, MPEG-7 standard is translated into an ontology. In this thesis, MPEG-7 ontology is used on top and the given user-defined ontologies are attached to the MPEG-7 ontology via a user friendly interface, thus building MPEG-7 based ontologies automatically. Our proposed system is an ontology-based multimedia information management framework due to its modular architecture, ease of integrating with domain specific ontologies naturally and automatic harmonization of MPEG-7 ontology and domain-specific ontologies. Integration with domain specific ontologies is carried out by enabling import of domain ontologies via a user-friendly interface which makes the system independent of application domains.

Abstract:

In this master thesis possible usability problems in the user interface and the work process of a Web Content Management System are identified and analyzed. The problem identification has been done with both analytical usability evaluation methods and observations of real users. Although most of the participants had little or no previous experience with the system and the identified problems were especially hard for inexperienced users, it is likely that many of these have a negative impact also on the work of experienced, trained users. Based on the findings, resolutions to problems are suggested and an improved prototype is sketched. The resolutions arel argely of a generalizable character while the improved prototype is targeted at a group of users who wish to create web pages but do not have a need to use the more advanced functionality of the system. This thesis will help define a role in the system to fill the gap between single page editing and full administration possibilities.

Abstract:
Effectiveness and usefullness among the important factors that affect success of online learning environments. During this study, a course-content management system developed regarding effectivity and usability related concerns. One major aim of this study is to develop effective and usable system. In this study, a course-content management system designed and developed under the light of previous researches. In the design phase, effective design strategies and characteristics of effective and usable learning systems were explored, and system was designed considering these strategies. Then, development phase applied. After system developed, usability techniques was explored, and heuristic evaluation method was choosed as a usability method to measure usability of the system. During the study, modified version of a checklist that was prepared considering usability heuristics. Applied checklist contains total 108 questions under 13 heuristics (major usability problem). Heuristic evaluation is an expert review method. Therefore, this study should have been evaluated by experts. 8 experts enrolled in this study. All experts are either Phd or graduate students at instructional technology departments and they have enrolled in web-based studies. They investigated the usability of the course-content management system according to the usability related criterias on the checklist. When test results were considered, a course-contentmanagement system developed during this study was found usable. Results of this study may enlighten the way of future studies.

Dogan, Ebru. "Content-based Audio Management And Retrieval System For News Broadcasts." Master's thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12611018/index.pdf.

Abstract:
The audio signals can provide rich semantic cues for analyzing multimedia content, so audio information has been recently used for content-based multimedia indexing and retrieval. Due to growing amount of audio data, demand for efficient retrieval techniques is increasing. In this thesis work, we propose a complete, scalable and extensible audio based content management and retrieval system for news broadcasts. The proposed system considers classification, segmentation, analysis and retrieval of an audio stream. In the sound classification and segmentation stage, a sound stream is segmented by classifying each sub segment into silence, pure speech, music, environmental sound, speech over music, and speech over environmental sound in multiple steps. Support Vector Machines and Hidden Markov Models are employed for classification and these models are trained by using different sets of MPEG-7 features. In the analysis and retrieval stage, two alternatives exist for users to query audio data. The first of these isolates user from main acoustic classes by providing semantic domain based fuzzy classes. The latter offers users to query audio by giving an audio sample in order to find out the similar segments or by requesting expressive summary of the content directly. Additionally, a series of tests was conducted on audio tracks of TRECVID news broadcasts to evaluate the performance of the proposed solution.
