Abstract:
The volume of hot dog sausages plays an important role in meat production. Due to their desirable eating properties (softness, juicy, mild taste and smell) they form a group of sausages acceptable for all consumer categories. They are produced according to producer’s specification, which are not the same. Therefore, the differences in quality may be expected. The objective of this paper was to make a comparative analyses of three parameters in five different products present on Novi Sad market: the content of water, fat and protein, and to determine the average content of these parameters in hot dogs produced by different producers. The average content of water ranged from 56.29±3.30% to 61.44±4.08%. The differences between the average content of water in the product of producer A and C were with no statistic significance (p=0.05), and there was no difference between the average water content in other products. The average total fat in hot dogs ranged from 17.60±3.07% to 20.66±4.65%. The average fat content in the products of D and B producer, as well as Cand B, was without statistically significant difference (p=0.05). The average fat content in the products of producer E and D differed p=0.01. In all other comparisons the difference between the average fat content was p=0.001. The average meat protein content ranged from 11.77±1.08% to 15.41±1.82%. Between the products from producer A and C there was no statistical significant difference (p=0.05). The average meat protein content in the products of D and E producers showed statistic difference of p=0.01, but the average content in other producers was p=0.001. The content of meat protein in all hot dogs were within limits of regulations (10%). Statistically significant difference of the average water content in five different producers was discovered in one case (out of ten), the average fat content in two, and the average protein content in one of the examined products.

Abstract:

This paper evaluates a denial-of-service attack in
information-centric networks based on the Content Centric
Networking (CCN) architecture. This attack aims at increasing the
content retrieval time. In this attack, both malicious consumers
and producers collude, by generating, publishing, and changing
content popularity. Malicious contents are stored by intermediate
nodes and occupy the cache space that should be occupied by
legitimate content. Thus, the probability of a legitimate consumer
retrieves content directly from the producer increases as well as
the content retrieval time. We evaluate the impact of the attack by
varying the number of consumers and producers in collusion, the
interest packets rate, and the way malicious contents are
requested. Results show if 20% of consumers are malicious and
send 500 interests/s each, the content retrieval time experienced by
legitimate users increases by 20 times, which shows the
effectiveness of the attack.

Abstract:
Counts of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), total anaerobes and enterococci were determined in the course of ripening in the edge part (E) and the core part (C) of Dutch-type semi-hard cheese produced with different fat content (30 and 45 %) by two different producers (H and R) using two different starter cultures (L and Y). Counts of LAB at the beginning of ripening (day 0) in H producer´s samples were higher (P < 0,01) in comparison with the R producer´s ones. Count of enterococci was the highest (P < 0,05) at the end of the ripening (176th day) in sample R30YE. Higher (P < 0,01) enterococci counts were in R producer´s cheeses (in comparison with the H producer´s ones). Enterococci contamination was higher (P < 0,05) in E-samples than C-samples. Content of the sum of all BA in cheese was negatively correlated (P < 0,05) with counts of lactic acid bacteria (r = –0,24) and counts of total anaerobes (r = –0,23). No correlation between the sum of BA content and enterococci counts was found.

Abstract:
Red-yeasts are pigmented yeast species that could synthesize carotenoids for food supplements and pharmaceutical purposes. However, this group contains a lot of species which need to be explored thoroughly. The objective of this study was to view the β-carotene production of three indigenous red-yeasts by modifying glucose content in the growth medium and verifying their phylogenetic relationship. The glucose content modification in growth media influenced the β-carotene production of each species. Rhodosporidiobolus ruineniae (InaCCY1638/Y15Eg075) and Rhodosporidiobolus poonsokiae (InaCCY1606/Y15Kr068) produced higher β-carotene than Rhodotorula paludigena (InaCCY1527/Y15Eg004). These Rhodosporidiobolus species were able to produce higher β-carotene from 0.5 to 2% glucose content while Rhodotorula was low production in 2% glucose content. The higher producers by Rhodosporidiobolus species were clustered to Ruineniae clade and could be a potential clade for higher β-carotene production. Based on this result, using a high carotenoid producer of red-yeasts from indigenous strains is potential to be developed for β-carotene bioindustry in the future.

Abstract:
Introduction. Yeast is a fast-growing single-celled microorganism and an inexpensive source of various biologically active substances, such as antioxidants, e.g. Glutathione (GSH). Antioxidant properties are determined by the presence of sulfhydryl group. The global demand for glutathione is estimated to exceed 9 billion USD at the expense not only of pure crystalized glutathione, but also of glutathione-enriched yeast extracts. In the food industry, glutathione is used to improve the quality of the dough and enhance the taste of various products. The present research featured domestic and foreign studies on the content of glutathione in yeast, methods of biosynthesis, and antioxidant properties.
Results and discussion. The content of glutathione ranges from 0.1 to 1% per completely dry biomass (CDB) in wild yeast strains. The fermentative method for the accumulation of glutathione is based on the optimization of the nutrient medium and the use of glutathione precursors, i.e. cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. Thus, this method makes it possible to double the content of intracellular glutathione in certain cultivation conditions. The use of non-directed mutagenesis methods can increase glutathione synthesis up to 5% in separate mutant strains, although the mechanism of synthesis is not always clear under such conditions. However, up to 2.27% of glutathione is being formed under directed change of the genome. In addition, the level of glutathione in cells increases under the influence of certain physical factors. For example, glutathione biosynthesis increases by 39% if yeast is exposed to a magnetic field. The enzymatic method requires maintaining the following factors: the presence of precursors (L-glutamic acid, L-cysteine, glycine), ATP, Mg2+ ions to activate GSH1 and GSH2, the pH of the medium, and the introduction of the necessary enzymes into the bioreactor. Hiwever, this method is non-economically profitable in large scale productions due to the needs in use ATP.
Conclusion. The survey research demonstrated the effect of technological characteristics of cultivation and biotechnological properties of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the accumulation of glutathione.

Abstract:
NDN is one of the new emerging future internet architectures which brings up new solutions over today’s internet architecture, facilitating content distribution, in-network caching, mobility support, and multicast forwarding. NDNs ubiquitous in-network caching allows consumers to access data directly from the intermediate router’s cache. However, it opens content privacy problems since data packets replicated in the router are always accessible by every consumer. Sensitive contents in the routers should be protected and accessed only by authorized consumers. Although the content protection problem can be solved by applying an encryption-based access control policy, it still needs an efficient content distribution scheme with lower computational overhead and content retrieval time. We propose an efficient and secure content distribution (ES_CD), by combining symmetric encryption and identity-based proxy re-encryption. The analysis shows that our proposed scheme achieves content retrieval time reduction up to 20% for the cached contents in our network simulation environment and a slight computational overhead of less than 19 ms at the content producer and 9 ms at the consumer for 2 KB content. ES_CD provides content confidentiality and ensures only legitimate consumers can access the contents during a predefined time without requiring a trusted third party and keeping the content producer always online.

Abstract:
Despite early initiatives during the 1960s and 1970s, and continuing efforts ever since, the Baltic Sea remains in poor condition. The Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) is the governing body tasked with protecting the marine environment from further deterioration through intergovernmental collaboration between the Baltic Sea states and the EU. In 2007, HELCOM launched a new tool – the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP), of which the so-called ecosystem approach is a cornerstone. However, how and why the BSAP reform was launched, and also what consequences such management reforms can have for transboundary resource management, is unknown. By using institutional theory, organizational theory and the advocacy coalition framework, in combination with content analysis of official documents derived from HELCOM, this thesis argues that the BSAP is the end result of a gradual process of change within institutional structures and actor beliefs. This thesis also shows that HELCOM's capacity to detect, process, and react in response to changes in its regulatory objective has not changed as a consequence of the BSAP. In contrast to earlier research, it seems HELCOM responds better to slow and opaque changes than to quick and visible ones. Finally, by comparing HELCOM with two other similar cases, the thesis shows that HELCOM's adaptive capacity could be improved in line with the recommendations of the ecosystem approach. This thesis illustrates the importance of studying the emergence of new tools for governing transboundary resources from several theoretical perspectives. The thesis uses an innovative quantitative content analysis and concludes that new methods might be required to enable such studies. The different perspectives used here give various explanations concerning the causes and consequences of the BSAP. In a future Baltic Sea, where environmental changes are likely to be abrupt, a multitude of understandings regarding the governance of the Baltic Sea will be crucial.

At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted. Peery, Stephen Seth. "Producer Network Effects for Rural Economic Development: An Investigation into the Economic Development Potential of Information Production as a Firm-Level Effect of Broadband Telecommunications in Rural Areas." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32854.

Full text
Abstract:
Broadband telecommunications infrastructure is considered to be an economic development necessity by a significant number of policymakers and economic development professionals, particularly in rural areas. Across the United States, a considerable amount of money is being invested in the deployment of broadband networks based, at least in part, on the premise that economic development benefits will obtain. However, there is a general lack of academic theory explaining the mechanism(s) by which broadband telecommunications can produce economic development results. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of broadband at the level of the firm. It adopts as its central working hypothesis the â Producer Networkâ concept originally developed at Virginia Tech, which suggests that economic development benefits may result from Internet users having access to multiple megabits-per-second of symmetrical, affordable bandwidth. It employs a qualitative grounded theory methodology to identify firm-level effects of broadband use. The studyâ s findings revealed that a majority of businesses in the case study communities were using much slower Internet connections than had been hypothesized, were using third-party, off-site web hosting, and did not believe they needed â Big Broadband.â Informants to the study believed that the economic development potential of broadband in the short term depended on the ubiquitous deployment of affordable connectivity, and were more concerned with reliability than bandwidth. The study concludes that the â Producer Networkâ is better understood as a long-term goal than as a model to explain the current firm-level applications of the commodity Internet. It suggests that policymakers should consider broadband not as a panacea for economic development, but as a tool whose potential for impact is influenced by a number of economic, political, social, and cultural forces originating at the community, national, and global levels. Based on the literature review and the field research, it proposes a general model for broadband telecommunications in rural economic development.
Master of Public and International Affairs

Through the analysis of letters written by viewers to producers, it can be found how some viewer outlooks on both society and personal life are being guided by the courses of action and resolutions presented in television drama. Furthermore, the letters can reveal in what ways viewers come to perceive producers as a type of counselor, knowledgeable enough to advise. This thesis, using Family Ties, an NBC situation-comedy program as a case study, examines letters to the producers in the context of the issue described above. The study is supplemented with the relevant scripts of the program, as well as interviews with the program's producers. The thesis outlines the problems and questions surrounding the study, reviews the related literature, provides a rationale, describes the methodology, and proceeds to analyze and interpret the viewer letters.
2031-01-01

Abstract:
In this study, we have examined how male and female content producers of four Swedish true crime podcasts have represented perpetrators, victims and their relatives. The study also examined how producers expressed personal opinions and how they used music. A critical review of these producers is relevant because previous studies have shown they have a great influence on both society and their listeners. The content of the podcasts was studied based on the theories of Sociology of Knowledge, Gender and Representation, using a Semiotic Text Analysis. The results show that male and female content producers represented those involved in the true crime cases in similar ways, but that there are differences in how male and female content producers expressed personal opinions. We have also identified two subcategories in the true crime genre, namely "Talk Show" and "Documentary".

Abstract:
Context. For the product manager, the product context analysis, which aims to align their products to the market needs, is very important. By understanding the market needs, the product manager knows the product context information about the environment the products conceived and the business the products take place. The product context analysis using the product context information helps the product manager find the accurate position of his/her products and support the decision-making of the products. The product context information generally could be found in the user feedbacks. And the traditional techniques of acquiring the user feedbacks can be replaced by collecting the existed online user feedbacks with a cheaper cost. Therefore, researchers did studies on the online user feedbacks and the results showed those user feedbacks contain the product context information. Therefore, in this study, I tried to elicit the product context information from the user feedbacks posted on Twitter. Objectives. Objectives of this study are 1. I investigated what kinds of Apps can be used to collect more related Tweets, and 2. I investigated what kinds of product context information can be elicited from the collected Tweets. Methods. To achieve the first objective, I designed unified criteria for selecting Apps and collecting App-related Tweets, and then conduct the statistical analysis to find out what is/are the factor(s) affect (s) the Tweets collection. To achieve the second objective, I conducted the directed content analysis on the collected Tweets with an indicator for identifying the product context information, and then make a descriptive statistical analysis of the elicited product context information. Results. I found the top-ranked Apps or Apps in few themes like “Health and Fitness” and “Games” have more and fresher App-related Tweets. And from my collected Tweets, I can elicit at least 15 types of product context information, the types include “user experience”, “use case”, “partner”, “competitor”, “platforms” and so on. Conclusions. This is an exploratory study of eliciting product context information from the Tweets. It presented the method of collecting the App-related Tweets and eliciting product context information from the collected Tweets. It showed what kinds of App are suitable to do so and what types of product context information can be elicited from the Tweets. This study let us be aware of that the Tweets can be used for the product context analysis, and let us know the appropriate condition to use the Tweets for the product context analysis.

Abstract:
In todays increased globalized business world and with a firms’ ongoing need for higher quality and lower costs, outsourcing is a popular strategy for companies to use. This thesis intends to study outsourcing in the context of new product development (NPD). The aim of this research is to contribute to the field of operations management. This is achieved by improving the understanding of decision-making during outsourcing NPD by investigating what factors affect the outsourcing decision. This will be fulfilled by addressing the research question What affect the choice between make or buy in outsourcing New Product Development? By conducting an exploratory single case study and performing semi-structured interviews, the factors that influence decision-making in outsourcing of NPD could be generated. The findings show that competence, time, service, costs, strategy, and ability to collaborate with supplier were important factors that influenced the decision. The factors were analyzed and compared with transaction cost economics and resource-based views, which are theoretical perspectives commonly used to understand the firm’s strategical decisions. The factors from the findings were also used to conduct a cost model and a decision model. This can help a firm’s decision-making and increase the understanding of how the decision in outsourcing of NPD is made. The results lend support to the argument that outsourcing decisions are complex. With different factors creating different influences, and all of them need to be considered in order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the decision. The findings also suggest that no theoretical perspective can alone completely explain the decision of outsourcing NPD, they need to be integrated with another demand-oriented perspective. A recommendation for further research should be to investigate how the cost model and decision model could be implemented in practical situations and in different contexts.

Abstract:
AbstractThe content of this chapter is focused on the importance of the warming-up process, the sociometric selection of a group topic and protagonist, and Yalom’s therapeutic factors as they relate to psychodrama groups. The warming-up process, often overlooked, is presented as integral to the success of any experiential structure. The role of the psychodrama director is described while presenting four sub-roles—therapist, analyst, group leader/sociometrist, and producer. The importance of contracting and the initial interview at the start of a psychodrama enactment are emphasized. Each of Yalom’s therapeutic factors is introduced while identifying their significance in psychodrama practice.

Abstract:
Biomass gasification is the devolatilization and incomplete combustion of biomass resulting in the production of a combustible gas mixture including carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2) methane (CH4), and traces of other hydrocarbons (CnHm), and referred to as producer gas. Producer gas can be cleaned and then used in various engines or can be converted to various biofuels. This paper presents an experimental and simulation-based evaluation of producer gas quality resulting from corn kernel gasification in a two-stage downdraft gasifier. Test conditions were selected, based on the results of previous studies, to yield high conversion efficiency and low tar production. Experimental tests were performed with an air flow of 25 Nm3/h and with 80% of the air supplied to the first gasification stage. Simulations based on a chemical and thermal equilibrium model were carried out to examine the effect of equivalence ratio (ER) changes. Both the experimental and modelling results show that using a two-stage air supply leads to a significant reduction in the tar content of the producer gas, while maintaining a high gasification efficiency.

Abstract:
Increasing world demand for energy has resulted in plans to expand the oil and gas transmission pipeline infrastructure in many countries utilizing higher strength steels of API grade X70 and X80. Traditional transmission pipeline steels, up to grade X70, relied on a ferrite/pearlite microstructural design generated through traditional TMCP rolling of a niobium microalloyed C-Mn steel design. Increasing strengths up to X70 and X80 for transmission pipelines has resulted in a shift toward a ferrite/acicular ferrite microstructure designs. Traditionally, to generate the ferrite/acicular ferrite microstructure design for X70 or X80, TMCP rolling is applied to a C-Mn-Si-Mo-Nb alloy system. The Nb content is typically less than 0.070% in this alloy system. With the rising cost of alloys over the past three years, steel and pipe producers have been working with different alloy designs to reduce total costs to produce the ferrite/acicular ferrite microstructure. In recent developments it has been determined that an optimized low-C-Mn-Si-Cr-Nb alloy design (usually referred as NbCr steel), utilizing an Nb content between 0.080 – 0.11% can produce the same ferrite/acicular ferrite microstructure with either no, or minimal, use of molybdenum. This approach has been successfully used in several transmission pipeline projects such as the Cantarell, Cheyenne Plains and Rockies Express. Recognizing the success of previous projects around the world, the large ∼ 4500 Km 2nd West-East Pipeline Project specification in China has been modified to allow for the use of this NbCr design for both plate and coil for conversion to long seam or spiral pipe. The NbCr design allows the steel producer to utilize niobium’s unique ability to retard recrystallization at higher than normal TMCP rolling temperatures, hence the term for the alloy design High Temperature Processing (HTP), producing the desired ferrite/acicular ferrite microstructure with excellent strength, toughness and weldability. This paper will discuss the technical background, rolling strategy, mechanical properties, welding, specific projects, and specification modifications with practical examples.

Abstract:
For the electric power generation by the woody biomass gasification, tar is incidentally formed at the same time. Tar means a compound of many kinds of aromatic hydrocarbons and causes some troubles, for example, clogging pipes when it is cooled and condensed before being supplied to the gas engine for electric power generation. One way for reducing tar is oxidative and thermal cracking by partial combustion of the producer gas in the gas reformer that is a stage subsequent to the biomass gasifier. During the partial combustion process of the producer gas, inverse diffusion flame is formed when oxidizer is supplied to producer gas. Cracking and polymerization of tar occur simultaneously at the proximity of the inverse diffusion flame. This polymerization of tar into soot is, however, a significant problem in the gas reformer. Experimental study was performed to clarify the effect of hydrogen concentration in the combustion region on soot formation and the growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that is precursor of soot. In the present study, hydrogen concentration at the proximity of the inverse diffusion flame was controlled by the small amount of hydrogen addition to the oxidizer. The main results were as follows. Soot formation was suppressed by the small amount of hydrogen addition (approximately 0.5% to the total enthalpy of the producer gas). The suppression of soot formation was caused by higher concentration of hydrogen at the proximity of the combustion region since the aromatic radicals were neutralized before they could combine together or with acetylene. Carbon yield was increased with the increase in the amount of hydrogen added to the oxidizer as carbon content in the undetectable components by the integrated gas chromatograph such as the soot was decreased. In addition, the increase of carbon yield resulted mainly from the increase in carbon monoxide stemmed from reforming of high-boiling components such as soot.

Abstract:
According to the Actor Network Theory, the local food system is a set of interconnected processes and social agents including municipalities as a business environment. In the context of rural studies, support for local food producers is important for local communities. By content analysis of the information available on the websites of Zemgale region’s municipalities and the opinions of municipal specialists on local support measures for entrepreneurs, the aim of the paper was to identify the activities of municipalities in local food systems. Within a context of local food systems, the authors revealed that municipalities in Zemgale region provide support activities in two main directions: food businesses and tourism activities. The analysis of business support measures showed that local food producers in municipalities are promoted and supported in a number of ways through branding, special events and trade facilitation, seminars and annual awards. Activities in the field of tourism revealed cooperation, involving local food producers in the tourism system and ensuring the recognition of local food products to a wider group of consumers. Integrating local food businesses into tourism routes and thematic activities, in other words making locally produced food an integral part of the tourism product, develops small and medium-sized enterprises that contribute to the socio-economic resilience and environmental sustainability of rural communities, local innovations and creativity. In Zemgale, municipal activities for support of local food producers in the context of COVID-19 crisis are strengthening rural communities thus supporting and helping entrepreneurs to adapt to changes.

Abstract:
Imatran Voima (TVO) is the biggest energy producer in Finland. IVO builds, owns and operates several biomass combustion power plants and carries out active R&D work on further development of small-scale biomass and peat-fired power plants. Both conventional power plants based on fluidized bed boilers and future power plants based on gasification are also developed by IVO. Typically, biomass fuels have high moisture content. High moisture content of fuel has, however, a negative effect on power generation cycles because of higher combustion losses. IVO has researched and developed a steam drying system for small-scale gasification power plants for the sole domestic fuels peat and biomass. This is described and the experience gained in testing it is briefly reviewed. The main focus of this paper is the thermal analysis of pressurized steam drying for biomass gasification power plants. Special emphasis is given to the thermal analysis of fuel moisture in alternative power plant processes. Fuel moisture removal is analyzed as a separate process.

Abstract:
This paper describes the system setup and presents results from the ongoing BioSOFC project. The project aims at demonstrating integration of atmospheric biomass steam gasification, high temperature gas cleaning and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). This is done by taking a slipstream from a steam gasification reactor (the Fast Internally Circulating Fluidised Bed (FICFB) gasifier at Biomasse Kraftwerk Gu¨ssing in Gu¨ssing, Austria) as fuel feed for a 5 kWel Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) stack. The system also includes a novel high temperature particle filter (the Panel Bed Filter (PBF)) and a high temperature H2S removal unit. The biomass gasifier, using wood chips as fuel, has a dry producer gas consisting of H2 (up to 45 vol%), CO (up to 30 vol%), CO2 (up to 20 vol%), CH4 (8–12 vol%) and N2 (1–2 vol%). This gas composition makes the producer gas highly suitable as fuel for SOFCs. However, the gas has a relatively high particle loading (up to 60 g/Nm3) and a tar content of up to 2 g/Nm3. In addition, it has been reported that the dry producer gas contains 100–200 ppmv H2S and 500–1000 ppmv NH3. Due to otherwise expected fuel cell performance degradation, the particles have to be removed before entering the SOFC stack. In addition, the sulphur (mainly H2S) concentration must be reduced to minimize the performance degradation in the SOFC. The slipstream is taken from the top of the gasifier freeboard, and is then cooled from about 900°C to 550°C before entering the PBF where the particles are removed. The H2S concentration is reduced in a separate fixed-bed reactor with a Zink-oxide based sorbent. The pressure in the producer gas is increased from the somewhat below atmospheric pressure in the filter to the atmospheric pressure required by the SOFC stack. This pressure increase is achieved by means of two high temperature fans operated at about 525°C. The producer gas is then heated again to up to 900°C before entering the fuel cell stack. This paper presents results from component tests carried out at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) as well as results from the field tests of the system in Gu¨ssing. This ongoing project is scheduled to continue until December 2007. The BioSOFC project is carried out in cooperation with TU-Vienna and Austrian and Norwegian technology companies. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway and six Norwegian companies.

Abstract:
Fly ash is a by-product of coal combustion, made up of particles that are collected through various methods. This by-product has been used successfully as a partial Portland cement replacement in concrete, but the performance predictions of fly ash in concrete have been difficult to predict, especially at high fly ash replacement rates. This study focuses on comparing the performance of concrete with a variety of fly ash mixtures as well as the particle distribution and chemical makeup of fly ash. The slump, unit weight, compressive strength, and isothermal calorimetry tests were used to measure the performance of concrete at 0%, 20%, and 40% fly ash replacement levels. The particle distribution of fly ash was measured with an automated scanning electron microscope. Additionally, the major and minor oxides from the chemical makeup of fly ash were measured for each mixture and inputted into a table. The particle distribution and chemical makeup of fly ash were compared to the performance of slump, unit weight, compressive strength, isothermal calorimetry, and surface electrical resistivity.

Abstract:
This report presents a case study for constructing aggregate subgrade improvement (ASI) layers using quarry by-product aggregates (QBA), a quarry mix of large primary crushed rocks (PCR) and sand-sized quarry fines. The construction took place at Larry Power Road in Bourbonnais Township in Kankakee County, Illinois, where the Illinois Department of Transportation placed two QBA mixes. The first mix (QBA_M1) consisted of 45% quarry by-products and 55% railroad ballast–sized 3×1 PCR. The second mix (QBA_M2) consisted of 31% and 69% quarry by-products and PCR, respectively. Two conventional ASI sections were also constructed conforming to Illinois Department of Transportation’s CS02 gradation. All sections consisted of a 9 in. (229 mm) QBA/PCR layer topped with a 3 in. (76 mm) dense-graded capping layer. Laboratory studies preceded the construction to recommend optimum quarry by-product content in the QBA materials and construction practice. The Illinois Center for Transportation research team monitored the quality and uniformity of the construction using nondestructive testing techniques such as dynamic cone penetrometer, lightweight deflectometer, and falling weight deflectometer. The segregation potential was monitored by visual inspection and imaging-based techniques. Short-term field evaluation of the constructed QBA layers, particularly QBA_M2 with a 31% quarry by-product content, showed no evidence of abnormal segregation and did not jeopardize the structural integrity of the QBA ASI layers, which had slightly lower but comparable strength and stiffness profiles to the conventional ASI sections. The use of QBA materials in ASI was field validated as a sustainable construction practice to provide stable pavement foundation layers.
