Abstract:
Abstract Categorical Monism (that is, the view that all fundamental natural properties are purely categorical) has recently been challenged by a number of philosophers. In this paper, I examine a challenge which can be based on Gabriele Contessa's [10] defence of the view that only powers can confer dispositions. In his paper Contessa argues against what he calls the Nomic Theory of Disposition Conferral (NTDC). According to NTDC, in each world in which they exist, (categorical) properties confer specific dispositions on their bearers; yet, which disposition a (categorical) property confers on its bearers depends on what the (contingent) laws of nature happen to be. Contessa, inter alia, rests his case on an intuitive analogy between cases of mimicking (in which objects do not actually possess the dispositions associated with their displayed behaviour) and cases of disposition conferral through the action of laws. In this paper, I criticize various aspects of Contessa's argumentation and show that the conclusion he arrives at (that is, only powers can confer dispositions) is controversial.

Abstract:
Eleven onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivars were selected to evaluate their yield performance under the arid conditions of the Riyadh area in the Central region of Saudi Arabia during the 1996–97 and 1997–98 growing seasons. The selected cultivars were: Colossal PVP 234, Contessa, Dorado, Red Creole, Ring Master, Rio Sultan, RioTalat, Texas Grano 502, Texas Early Grano 502, Und Grande and Yellow Spanish. Yield (ton/ha) and yield attributes such as bulb diameter, length, weight and dry matter were assessed. Transplants grown in plastic trays for 45 days under greenhouse conditions were transplanted in the field on 7 Jan. 1997 and on 29 Dec. 1997 and harvesting was carried out on 19 May 1997 and on 15 May 1998 for the first and second season, respectively. Significant differences were observed between cultivars and among growing seasons, with significant interaction for yield and bulb weight. The top high yielding cultivars in the first season were Und Grande, Texas Early Grano 502, Colossal PVP 234, Contessa and Dorado. In the second season, Dorado, Red Creole, Contessa, Ring Master and Und Grande outyielded other cultivars. Under the conditions of this study, Contessa, Dorado, Red Creole, Texas Early Grano 502, and Und Grande had the highest yield attributes that made them recommended for growing in the arid regions. The yield and yield attributes of each cultivar will be discussed.

AbstractThe duration of polarity Chron C31r is estimated with a cyclostratigraphic approach. Two sites are investigated: ODP Site 762 (Indian Ocean) and the Contessa Highway section (Gubbio, Italy). Cyclostratigraphic analysis is performed on greyscale variations (Site 762) and magnetic susceptibility variations (Contessa section). Both sites reveal an astronomical control of the sedimentation, highlighted by the identification of all the orbital periodicities. Cyclostratigraphic signals are tuned on 405 ka eccentricity cycles extracted from the La04 astronomical solution. In both sites, cycle counting gives an estimate of the duration of polarity Chron C31r of about 2.09 ± 0.03 Ma.

Abstract:
Representative varieties and genotypes of different colored onions were compared to determine the extent of differences in the distribution of quercetin and quercetin glycosides. The dry skins, outer rings, and inner rings were separated and extracted with ethanol to obtain quercetin glycosides that were then hydrolyzed to free quercetin, or aglycone. Free quercetin was used as the standard for quantification by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Significant difference (P=0.05) in total quercetin content was observed between dry skin and inner rings (edible parts). A decrease in total quercetin content was observed from the dry skin to inner rings. The highest total quercetin content was observed in the dry skins of Red bone variety (30.74 g/kg dry weight) while Contessa variety contain the least amount (0.082 g/kg dry weight). Total quercetin content in outer scales (1-2 scales) in Kadavan variety is the highest (481 mg/kg fresh weight); however, trace amounts are observed in Contessa. Inner rings (5-6 and 7-10 scales) contain less amount of total quercetin in all the varieties. Outer scales of all the varieties except 1015Y and Contessa contain moderate amount (2.5-16 mg/kg fresh weight) of free quercetin. Kadavan contain the highest amount of free quercetin (20.64 g/kg dry weight).

Abstract:
The dramatic and musical climax of 'The Marriage of Figaro', perhaps Mozart’s operatic masterpiece, is famously marked by the unexpected forgiveness of the Count by the Countess, whom the count has infamously refused to forgive earlier in the opera. This article will explore the musical and psychological ramifications of forgiveness and the refusal to forgive within couple relationships, not only in this opera but also in two other great Mozart operas, 'Don Giovanni' and 'Così fan tutte', in which issues around forgiveness are also implicitly central. It will be argued that Mozart’s very differing and contrasting realisations of this core human and couple dynamic through his unique dramatic, verbal, and musical talents may partially account for the reputation of these operas for depth and universality.

Abstract:
There is a great need to reduce the use of fossil-fueled road transport. In order to encourage the use of public transport, opportunities for the application of electrical charging stations for e-bikes aboard railway vehicles were analyzed. A theoretical concept was developed for the introduction of electrical charging stations aboard railway vehicles, with Contessa - Oeresund Train Unit X31 as the subject of study. The design was based on a set of required management characteristics, which included any requirements from the vehicle owner, traveler and society (such as improved environment, public transport and health of the citizens). The study was based on the current standards, requirements and safety regulations for railway vehicles operating within the European Union. Upon completion of the study, one was able to establish that the potential exists for introducing the concept aboard the subject of study, as well as for other railway vehicles. The charging station consisted of a group of three power supplies and a sizing was performed for two such groups, to adapt as needed. The result indicates that fast charging modes have the greatest functionality for users with shorter travel time on board the train, such as commuters. At the present time, it is not possible to implement a fast charging mode as a standard feature for all e-bikes, as no standardized fast charger fits all e-bikes, independent of the manufacturer. Fast charging modes cannot be implemented for normally charged electric bicycles based on functionality, battery wear and fire risk. Furthermore, the study shows that large reductions in greenhousegas emissions can be achieved using electric bicycles in combination with communal trains, by effectively replacing car trips.

Abstract:
This research provides the critical edition of over four hundred letters sent by the countess Margherita Trivulzio to her son, Cardinal Federico Borromeo, between 1586-1601. The study of this nucleus of letters allows one not only to shed new light on the figure of Borromeo, analysing his family relationships, but allows a particular focus on a personality, who has so far remained little known and yet worthy of being discovered: that of the noble Trivulzio. Starting from the study of the examined epistles, the following analysis aims to reconstruct the biographical profile, the religious background and the cultural importance of the countess – the latter being investigated as well in terms of linguistic analysis – while at the same time it offers a possible itinerary of reading the numerous letters addressed to the famous founder of the Ambrosian Library of Milan.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three essays in Contest Theory. The theory of contests studies situations where individuals compete to win a prize. Underperformance in contests naturally arises for several reasons, like lack of information or group conflict. The aim of this thesis is to find solutions to overcome this problem. The first chapter addresses conflicts between two groups when trying to win a public prize and analyzes how these contests are affected when groups are led by an organizer with the capacity to impose transfers to share the costs of individual efforts within the group. We first describe centralized levels of group effort - those that organizers wish to attain - and compare with efforts when individuals act non-cooperatively. In the model a group underperforms when effort exerted by individuals in the non-cooperative setting is smaller than the centralized group effort. Otherwise, the group outperforms. We show that the larger group always underperforms, while the smaller one only does so if its size is sufficiently close to the larger group or otherwise outperforms. Second, we characterize cost sharing schemes that implement group centralized levels of effort. These schemes consist of sharing costs in an egalitarian way. And third, we examine the game where organizers compete strategically in setting the cost-sharing scheme of their group. We show that while the cost-sharing scheme is the same for the larger group that in the implementation case, it is different for the smaller group. The second chapter studies the design of a contest between two possible budget constrained players when the organizer of the contest is not informed about the actual size of budgets and where the objective is to maximize aggregate effort. We define the optimal effort as the maximum levels of effort achievable in a situation of complete information. When the organizer has complete information, effort is maximized when the contest is biased towards the constrained player in case they have different budgets. When the organizer has incomplete information, we show that the previous design fails to maximize aggregate effort, since unconstrained players lie about their budgets in order to ensure a favorable position in the contest. We show that there is a mechanism that implements the optimal effort. This mechanism consists of offering lower prizes to players that claim to be constrained to induce unconstrained players to report their true budget. The third chapter studies situations where individuals compete to avoid a bad, using the reverse lottery contest model introduced by Fu et al. (2014). We study an application in which a government needs to allocate a dump in a region and wants to maximize lobbying. The government decides either to divide this dump in smaller pieces or not, considering that lobbies influence the government to avoid such bads in their region. We show that lobbying is maximized when the government does not divide the dump. We also compare the properties of the reverse lottery contest with the conventional lottery contest. In a framework in which individuals compete to win many prizes and avoid many bads, we show that aggregate effort is higher using the conventional (reverse) lottery contest when there are more (less) prizes than bads.

Abstract:
Im Zentrum des Aufsatzes »Livia als Emma« steht Luchino Viscontis Film »Senso« (1954, dt. »Sehnsucht«).

Abstract:
We study a competition among two contests, where each contest designer aims to attract as much effort as possible. Such a competition exists in reality, e.g., in crowd-sourcing websites. Our results are phrased in terms of the ``relative prize power'' of a contest, which is the ratio of the total prize offered by this contest designer relative to the sum of total prizes of the two contests. When contestants have a quasi-linear utility function that captures both a risk-aversion effect and a cost of effort, we show that a simple contest attracts a total effort which approaches the relative prize power of the contest designer assuming a large number of contestants. This holds regardless of the contest policy of the opponent, hence providing a ``safety level'' which is a robust notion similar in spirit to the max-min solution concept.

Abstract:
Much of the work on multi-agent contests is focused on determining the equilibrium behavior of contestants. This capability is essential for the principal for choosing the optimal parameters for the contest (e.g. prize amount). As it turns out, many contests exhibit not one, but many possible equilibria, hence precluding contest design optimization and contestants behavior prediction. In this paper we examine a variation of the classic contest that alleviates this problem by having contestants make the decisions sequentially rather than in parallel. We study this model in the setting of a simple contest, wherein contestants only choose whether or not to participate, while their performance level is exogenously set. We show that by switching to the revised mechanism the principal can not only force her most desired pure-strategies based equilibrium to emerge, but also, at times, end up with an equilibrium offering a greater expected profit. Further, we show that in the modified contest the optimal prize can be effectively computed. The theoretical analysis is complemented by comprehensive experiments with people over Amazon Mechanical Turk. Here, we find that the modified mechanism offers great benefit for the principal, both in terms of an increased over-participation in the contest (compared to theoretical expectations) and increased average profit.

Abstract:
Educational goals and other requirements to successfully run design contests for university engineering students are discussed. The authors held human powered submarine design contests and races in Escondido, California in the summers of 2000, 2002 and 2004. These events were specifically designed to expose university engineering students to the types of decisions and processes an engineer in industry would face 5–10 years after receiving a bachelor’s degree in engineering. In building a submarine for this contest, students gained technical expertise in conceptual and detail design and manufacturing, experience in teamwork and time management, and exposure to gaining funding and controlling expenditures. At the contest, oral presentations simulate industrial final design reviews, and races simulate functional tests and demonstrations for customers. Lessons and examples drawn from planning and running HPS2000, HPS2002, and HPS2004 are included and may be useful to persons planning similar educational engineering contests, and to contestants in such events.

Abstract:
We study how to incentivize agents in a target subpopulation to produce a higher output by means of rank-order allocation contests, in the context of incomplete information. We describe a symmetric Bayes--Nash equilibrium for contests that have two types of rank-based prizes: (1) prizes that are accessible only to the agents in the target group; (2) prizes that are accessible to everyone. We also specialize this equilibrium characterization to two important sub-cases: (i) contests that do not discriminate while awarding the prizes, i.e., only have prizes that are accessible to everyone; (ii) contests that have prize quotas for the groups, and each group can compete only for prizes in their share. For these models, we also study the properties of the contest that maximizes the expected total output by the agents in the target group.

Abstract:
This paper studies the problem of designing contests for settings where a principal seeks to optimize the quality of the best performance obtained, and potential contestants only strategize about whether to participate in the contest, as participation incurs some cost. This type of contest can be mapped to various real-life settings (e.g., an audition, a beauty pageant, technology crowdsourcing). The paper provides a comparative game-theoretic based solution to two variants of the above underlying model: parallel and sequential contest, enabling a characterization of the equilibrium strategies in each. Special emphasis is placed on the case where the contestants are homogeneous which is often the case in real-life whenever the contestants are basically alike and their ranking in the contest is mostly influenced by some probabilistic factors (e.g., luck). Here, several (somehow counter-intuitive) properties of the equilibrium are proved, in particular for the sequential contest, leading to a comprehensive characterization of the principal preference between the two.

Abstract:
We present a complete information game-theoretic model for crowdsourcing contests. We observe that in design contests, coding contests and other domains, separating low quality submissions from high quality ones is often easy. However, pinning down the best submission is more challenging since there is no objective measure. We model this situation by assuming that each contestant has an ability, which we interpret as its probability of submitting a high-quality submission. After the contestants decide whether or not they want to participate, the organizer of the contest needs to break ties between the high quality submissions. A common assumption in the literature is that the exact tie-breaking rule does not matter as long as ties are broken consistently. However, we show that the choice of the tie-breaking rule may have significant implications on the efficiency of the contest. Our results highlight both qualitative and quantitative differences between various deterministic tie-breaking rules. Perhaps counterintuitively, we show that in many scenarios, the utility of the organizer is maximized when ties are broken in favor of successful players with lower ability. Nevertheless, we show that the natural rule of choosing the submission of the successful player with the highest ability guarantees the organizer at least 1/3 of its utility under any tie-breaking rule. To complement these results, we provide an upper bound of Hn ~ \ln(n) on the price of anarchy (the ratio between the social welfare of the optimal solution and the social welfare of the Nash equilibrium). We show that this ratio is tight when ties are broken in favor of players with higher abilities.
